How to find a tutor for your child

ByMetro Creative

Tutors provide an invaluable service to stu-dents across the globe. Students at all grade levels utilize tutors, and the results such tutors produce may surprise even the most ardent tutor supporters.

A 2009 study from re-searchers at the Chabot College Office of Insti-tutional Research found that tutored students had higher pass rates on average than non-tutored students in every class examined. Those classes included anatomy, biology, business, and chemistry. In addition, one study published in the American Journal of Physics found that hu-man tutoring can result in classroom test scores that are 35 percent high-er than software-driven tutoring.

Such results have un-derstandably made many parents true believers in the power of tutoring. Parents who want their children to work with tutors but don’t know where to find one can try these strategies.

• Contact your child’s school. Many schools offer free tutoring programs, and such programs can provide the one-on-one atten-tion students need to understand their lessons. After-school tutor-ing programs offered by schools also may provide curriculum-spe-cific tutoring that aligns directly with what stu-dents are being taught in the classroom. Schools also may have informa-

tion about local private tutors and tutoring firms, so parents should not hesitate to contact their children’s school.

• Ask around. Fellow parents can be great resources when looking for tutors. Other parents can share their own experiences working with certain tutors, and may be able to point you in the direction of tutors who specialize in certain areas, such as mathemat-ics or the sciences.

• Contact local com-munity organizations. Local community organizations such as the YMCA also may offer free or low-cost tutoring programs to members or even non-members. Parents are urged to con-sider these programs, as they may be staffed by local college students, including undergradu-ates and post-graduates. When speaking with local organizations, ask how they choose their tutors and inquire about the educational back-grounds of those tutors.

• Consider online tutoring services. Online tutoring services are another option, and one that can be especially valuable for families that live in remote or rural areas where in-person access to tutors may be hard to find. Search the internet for online tu-toring services, making sure to read reviews and even request testimo-nials from past clients before signing up.

Parents have numer-ous resources at their disposal that can help them find tutors for their children.

Home office must-havesByMetro Creative

Remote work has been around for many years, though it cer-tainly picked up steam in 2020. In an effort to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus COVID-19, in March 2020 government offi-cials implemented stay-at-home measures that mandated many working professionals to begin working from home. That transition occurred seemingly overnight, forcing men and women to find somewhere in their homes to work.

As the dust settled and working professionals grew accustomed to working from home, many recognized the need to have an office in their homes. Various factors can make home offices more conducive to getting work done, and the following are some home office must-haves that can help people be more produc-tive while working from home.

Lighting is important in a home office. It’s easy to overlook natu-ral light, especially for workers who previously worked in offices that did not have windows. But natural light can help save on energy costs and boost mood.

In fact, natural light is a valued commodity for people used to work-ing in office settings. A 2018 survey of more than 1,600 workers conducted by the human resources advisory firm Future Workplace found that access to natural light and views of the outdoors were the most sought after attribute of a workplace envi-ronment. In addition, 47 percent of workers surveyed admitted they felt tired or very tired from the absence of nat-ural light or a window at their office. When designing their home offices, homeowners should keep this in mind and choose areas of their homes that get ample natural light during a typical workday. Addi-tional lighting also will be necessary. Recessed lighting can give an office a sleek look, and lights that can dim can allow workers to adjust their lighting based on how much they need at any given point in the workday.

Professionals forced to work at home when social distancing mea-sures were implement-ed may not have had much quiet, especially for those with young children whose schools were closed. But when designing a home office,

homeowners have the chance to make their offices more conducive to concentration. Sound-proofing walls may not be necessary, but look for areas of the home that don’t get much foot traffic. Kitchens are very popular rooms in many homes, so try to locate your home office away from the kitchen. A spare bedroom upstairs may make for the most ideal home office setting if the home does not have a traditional den. Spare bedrooms come with doors, which can instantly create a sense of quiet when closed. A converted garage also can make for a useful home office, but make sure the room already has cooling and heating and, ideally, windows.

Recently built homes tend to be equipped with enough outlets

to accommodate our increasingly connected lifestyles. But older homes may need some electrical updates before they can capably accom-modate home offices. When updating your electrical, replace exist-ing outlets and fixtures with energy-efficient LED fixtures, which save money and benefit the environment. Before updating the electrical, decide on how you want the office to be laid out so you can have outlets installed where your computer, devices and other items, like a print-er and television, will be. This makes it easy to hide cords and give the office a clean, profes-sional look.

Home office capabili-ties became a big prior-ity in 2020. Designing such spaces can be fun and easy.

Patriot’s DayPatriot’s Day

Patriot Day takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks.

ByMetro Creative

September 11, 2001, was a tragic day in American history. On that day, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in rural Pennsylvania, where another plane en route for more destruction crash-landed.

The indelible images

of the World Trade Cen-ter collapsing in flames with crowds running for safety, as well as the en-suing visions of heroes and citizens working together, have created a lasting impression.

While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11

to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks, is one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families.

• Celebrate local heroes by visiting or making donations of food or supplies to local firehouses and police stations.

• Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments

of silence at key times throughout the day: 8:46 a.m, 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m.

• Engage in ser-vice projects that can help your community, including its under-served individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as Patriot Day, asks people to do at least one good deed in honor of those who died on 9-11.

• Make a trip to New York City and visit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

• If you display a flag at your home or busi-ness, be sure to place it at half staff from sunrise to sunset to mourn the lives lost.

• Share stories of the heroism and bravery of first responders with young children who may not have been alive in 2001.

• Unite the country by

promoting acceptance of and kindness to all people, regardless of religious or political beliefs.

• Attend a special service commemorat-ing 9-11 at houses of worship.

• Visit memorials honoring the fallen in various communities in and around your home.

This Patriot Day, there are many ways individu-als can honor those who lost their lives on 9-11.
