Closing brings great sadness

Over a month ago the staff and volunteers of the Pregnancy Resource Centerlearned that Youth 2000 was closing, news that brought us great sadness. Weunderstand that Mary David has applied for a new grant in the hopes of beingable to reopen their office.

Youth 2000 had been in the community for over a decade, and they have pro-vided very valuable education to the teenagers of our area in the field of preg-nancy prevention and related subjects. This is something that the PRC is not yetequipped to handle, and while we hope to increase our services over time, wecurrently do not have the materials nor the staff and volunteers to fill the voidthat is left by Youth 2000 closing. We will continue to provide our servic-es - peer counseling, pregnancy tests, materials assistance, and referrals - to allthose who have a need. We will pray that the Youth 2000 proposed grant isawarded, so that our community will continue to benefit from both Youth 2000and the Pregnancy Resource Center. In the meantime, we'd like to hear fromthe community if you want the PRC to add more programs and you are willingto support us with time and funds to do so. It is our desire to help make theKRV the best community in which to live.In the meantime....we are still open, and plan to be here for a very long time. InHis service joyfully,

Myrtle Pierce, Executive DirectorPregnancy Resource Center of the Kern River Valley

Q: Do you know what the statusis on a new "Bridget Jones" movie?Every so often I hear rumors thatone is in the works, but then noth-ing ever happens. Would ReneeZellweg show! -- Emmy R.,via e-mail

A: Since 2009, WorkingTitle Films (which producedthe first two movies) has beenthinking about a sequel, andhints of that have been reach-ing our ears. Renee Zellwegerhad always said there couldn'tbe another movie withoutanother book. Well, the series'author, Helen Fielding, announced earlier this year that she ishard at work on the third "BridgetJones" book. Helen has confirmed: "Iwill be working on both the book andthe film, but I don't know if they are thesame thing yet. It's not been decided."

And Academy Award-winner ColinFirth, who plays Mark Darcy in theseries, told the BBC this summer, "Ithink the idea of Mark and Daniel(played by Hugh Grant) and Bridget inadvanced stages of deterioration couldbe quite fun. We're making a comedy, after all."

Q: Mike Myers is one of myfavorite comedic actors. What'snext for him? -- Faith D., via e-mail

A: Aside from having a baby on theway, the biggest professional news to

come from the Mike Myers camp is thatMike is set to break out his AustinPowers character for a fourth film. There's no word about what the plotwill center on, but you can bet he'll havea sexy and smart new sidekick to followin the wake of Elizabeth Hurley, Heather

Graham and Beyonce. I'd liketo see Emma Stone giveAustin a run for his money.Yeah, baby!

Q: I have a questionabout a show that featureda married couple witheight children, but theysplit up. Did the mom gether own show? -- Ken J.,The Villages, Fla.

A: The mom in question,Kate Gosselin, did get her own show:What was "Jon & Kate Plus 8" became"Kate Plus 8." However, TLC announcedthe final show will air on Sept. 12, withthis statement: "TLC has decided not torenew another season of 'Kate Plus 8.'By the end of this season, 'Kate Plus 8'will have hit the 150-episode mark(including 'Jon & Kate Plus 8'), an excep-tional milestone. TLC hopes to check inwith Kate and the family periodicallywith specials in the future."ing.

California Fish GameSpecial to Courier

The Department of Fish andGame (DFG) invites Californians tokick off their Labor Day weekendcelebration by fishing in our state'sspectacular waters. Saturday,Sept. 3 is the second of California'stwo 2011 Free Fishing Days, whenpeople can try their hand at fishingwithout having to buy a sport fish-ing license.

All fishing regulations, such asbag and size limits, gear restric-tions, report card requirements, fishing hours and stream closuresremain in effect. Every angler musthave an appropriate report card ifthey are fishing for abalone, steel-head, sturgeon or spiny lobsteranywhere in the state, or salmonspecifically in the Smith andKlamath-Trinity River systems.

DFG offers two Free FishingDays each year - usually in con-junction with the Fourth of Julyand Labor Day weekend - whenit's legal to fish without a sportfishing license. This year, the Free

Fishing Days were set for theSaturdays preceding IndependenceDay and Labor Day (July 2 and Sept.3) because they fall on holidayweekends, when a fishing excursionis likely to be most convenient forthe public.

Free Fishing Days provide a low-cost way to give fishing a try. SomeDFG regions offer Fishing in theCity programs where you can gofishing in major metropolitan areas.Fishing in the City and Free FishingDay clinics are designed to educatenovice anglers about fishing ethics, fish habits, effective methods forcatching fish and fishing tackle. Youcan even learn how to clean andprepare your catch so you can enjoyit for dinner that night.

Anglers should check the rulesand regulations atwww.dfg.ca.gov/regulations/ forthe waters they plan to fish.Wardens will be on duty to enforcethem. For more information on FreeFishing Days, please visitwww.dfg.ca.gov/licensing/fishing/freefishdays.html.

Mike, no anoth-er one, didn't havea report this week.So this Mike ispinch writing withsome of the tidbitsfrom around townand the CanyonConnection Fishing Forum.

Seems the main action thisweek is all up river. Good reportsare trickling in from last week-end and we had some happycampers…despite thesmoke.

One suchreport wasfrom Duaneand Sue,owners ofP r i m o ' sDeli. Theywere beam-ing withpride and a couple of photos oftheir daughter who had a fieldday just below JohnsondaleBridge. A full string of beautiesin the 4-5 lb range was preservedwith pixel perfect proof.Unfortunately, the photo trans-fer didn't arrive by press timebut I was duly impressed. Ofcourse, with a father who spendsevery available minute fishingsomewhere or other when he'ssupposed to be working, she'shad the expertise handed downto be successful. If you want toknow what their biting on, stopin at Primo's and ask Duane. Ifwe ever receive the photo we'llrun it to tease your senses.

The Kern River Hatchery hasbeen stocking up a storm andtossing in a good amount of their

"Trophy Trout" from the pro-gram by the same name. Thesefish usually run in the three tofour pound weight class andmany of the regular river rig-gers love to catch, click andrelease just for the joy of thefight. (To those who put 'emback to fight another day, wethank you!)While writing this I was remi-

niscing about my days at Road'sEnd with Al Keegan. While weworked the quaint general storeselling fishing gear and bait, vis-itors would often ask where’s thebest spot to fish. He'd offer his

u s u a lr e s p o n s e ,"We kind oflike the river.We tried theroad but did-n't catcha n y t h i n g . "Al's sense ofhumor was amight drybut endear-

ing. I hope you may have beenone of the thousands that hadthe opportunity to spend a fewminutes with him. Warm memo-ries for many.

To those that visit the FishingForum on a regular basis andpost their experiences (good orbad) to benefit others, we great-ly appreciate your participationand sharing. Don't forget tobring the family for free fish dayon September 3rd. Fishing, athrill they'll remember throughlife.

Wishing you all…tight lines, agood bite, and that Mike, no theregular one, will be back report-ing next week.

Beextra careful at crossroads. ■ Maintain control of your bike. Don't swerve ormake sudden turns. ■ Watch out when riding next to parked cars. They can open doors or pull into the street.■ Listen for cars approaching from the side orbehind you. Never wear headphones.■ Know your road signs and obey them. ■ Always be prepared to stop. ■ No cell phone talking or texting while riding.Watch what's going on around you.

Drivers■ It's especially important to slow down andwatch out for kids at the beginning of the schoolyear. Students are excited and their uncertaintywith the new school schedules may hinder themfrom paying attention to traffic conditions andtheir own safety. Simply put, children may notbe watching for traffic. California's maximumspeed limit in school zones is 25 MPH when chil-

School Buses:■ If your child rides a school bus, make sure thathe or she knows to remain seated at all times, tokeep the aisles clear, not to throw objects, not toshout or distract the driver, and to keep his orher hands and arms inside of the bus. ■ The California school bus is one of the safestmodes of transportation in the world, but every-one must do their part to be safe when travelingnear buses transporting kids, whether in motionor stopped.

Jack Duitsman, pastorFather’s Heart FoursquareChurch,Kernville

"My Father, had the prophettold you to dosome great thing, would you nothave done it?How much morethen, when hesays to you,'Wash and beclean'?"

-2Kings 5:13

There is of course no way toaccurately measure many corol-lary events in a way that helps tounderstand what affect one hadon the other. Does a good night'ssleep really effect the successfulsales presentation the followingday, or was it more the excellentcup of coffee that revved theengines onthe way tothe meet-ing?Honestly, itmight havebeen both, neither, athousandother fac-tors, or that the customer justhappened to need whatever youwere selling.

What is certain is that whilecause and affect is an active partof life, the capacity to know forcertain how this process works isan imperfect science. Two sepa-rate conclusions can therefore bearrived at: 1) Since there is nomeasurable way to know theiraffect on life's outcomes, a patternof good choices is not really veryimportant where lifestyle prefer-ences are concerned; or 2)Though not clearly measurable, adisciplined pattern of responsesbased on eternal principles willhave a powerful impact on life.

In 2 Kings 5, Naaman theSyrian objected to a clearly meas-urable cause and affect that waspresented to him. The Word ofthe Lord had promised healing forNaaman from the dreaded diseaseof leprosy if the commanderwould but wash seven times in theRiver Jordan. He becameincensed however over the per-

ceived humiliation that such a dis-ciplined response would bring.Curiously, Naaman was willing tosubject himself to what he per-ceived would be a more noblerequirement, thus satisfying hisown personal pride while receiv-ing healing. It took the level headof his servant to explain the grosserror in judgment, and following atrip to the Jordan, and seven dipsin the muddy river, Naamanreceived his healing.

What to make then of the myri-ad of choices made by us on adaily basis - some conscious, andsome unconscious? If we chooseto live our lives as believing in theprinciple of sewing and reaping(cause and affect whether measur-able or not), then each decisionwe make has a ripple effect, goodor bad, on our lives.

No matter the seeming insignif-icance or perceived damage to ourown pride (ie. - dunking seventimes in the river Jordan), we are

encouragedto lay downpersonalself-impor-tance inexchange forpersonalobedience tothe princi-ples in God's

Word. The larger picture of life isaffected by the smaller picture; thelong run is affected by the shortrun.

Personal accountability andresponsibility come back intofocus, and while we may notalways be pleased with every out-come of our life experience, wecan be encouraged that life isbeing lived in a circumspect way,and according to principlesdeemed fit by the Father of love.Responding on a regular basis inlove, trust, hope, and patience; asopposed to anger, fear, discour-agement, and impatience will bearfruit in ways we will experience inongoing ways.

A reminder to not give in toself-incriminating condemnationand despair, but rather to makethese issues an opportunity to cryout for the Lord's help. As we areall engaged in the long run offaith's journey, may we bestrengthened by the Father of loveto make wise choices in the shortrun of life's tyrannical immediacy.

Over the last few months we haveseen somethingreally rare hap-pening in the RealEstate industry.Interest rates havestayed at or nearhistoric lows. Ifyou look at agraph of interestrate averages overthe last 30 years, getting a mort-gage below 6%interest only hap-pened a few times, and it did not lastlong.

Right nowyou can getone forbelow 4.5%with goodcredit andjob history. That isunheard of long term, usually thingslike that happen for short periodsand then the rates go up to theirmore common higher levels. Takeadvantage of this while you can. With the economic troubles thecountry is having, the FederalReserve is keeping rates incrediblylow for the next 2 years, and the Fedrate has a lot to do with Mortgagerates.

The reason rates are so low andhave stayed that way for a bit isbecause the government has beenartificially keeping the rate low by

buying it's own debt. Although I donot know or understand all of thedetails I guess the Federal Reserve isbuying down government debt andholding on to it for future sale.Whatever they are doing, andregardless of what you think aboutwhat they are doing, the fact is atleast they are keeping rates low!! Sodespite all the recent uncertainty withthe Congress and President fightingover the direction of the economyand how to get us out of what is fore-cast to be a double dip recession it isa great time to buy.

This is a buyers market guys, thisis one of the strongest buyers mar-kets I have seen and as with all goodthings it will not stay this way. Priceswill stabilize, lenders will loosen up

and we willstart to see abottom, insome areassuch as the sil-icon valleyand even

parts of Bakersfield prices are alreadygoing up due to demand. The bigfactor that is gonna weigh in on ifthat trend continues to keep happen-ing is unemployment. Californianeeds jobs, period. We need torebuild this state from the bottom up,especially the government, but alasthat is another article for anotherday! In the meantime, go out andbuy something.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) As tensionsease at home, you can again focus on changes inthe workplace. Early difficulties are soon workedout. Stability returns as adjustments are made.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A new romancetests your patience to the limit. But Venus stillrules the Taurean heart, so expect to find yourselftrying hard to make this relationship work.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It's a good timeto consider home-related purchases. But shoparound carefully for the best price -- whether it'sa new house or a new hose.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A contentiousfamily member seems intent on creating prob-lems. Avoid stepping in until you know moreabout the origins of this domestic disagreement.

LEO (July 23 to Aug.22) A recent job-relatedmove is more successful than you could haveimagined. Look for continued beneficial fallout.Even your critics have something nice to say.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Ease up and stopdriving yourself to finish that project on a dead-line that is no longer realistic. Your superiors willbe open to requests for an extension. Ask for it.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) You should soon

be hearing some positive feedback on that recentbusiness move. An old family problem recurs, but this time you'll know how to handle it better.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Some surpris-ing statements shed light on the problem thatcaused that once-warm relationship to cool off.Use this newly won knowledge to help turnthings around.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Your spir-itual side is especially strong at this time. Let itguide you into deeper contemplation of aspectsabout yourself you'd like to understand better.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Your merri-er aspect continues to dominate and to attractfolks who rarely see this side of you. Some seri-ous new romancing could develop out of all thischeeriness.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) You're alwaysconcerned about the well-being of others. It'stime you put some of that concern into your ownhealth, especially where it involves nutrition.

PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Just when youthought your life had finally stabilized, alongcomes another change that needs to beaddressed. Someone you trust can help you dealwith it successfully.

The Ford brothers were guestsin Jesse James' St. Joseph, Mo.home on the Monday morning ofApri 3,1882. They were planningthe robbery of the Platte CityBank. Seeing that a picture on thewall wasn'tstraight, Jesseunbuckled his twogun belts, andpulled a chair overto the wall. Thenhe stepped up.

The Fordslooked at eachother, numbed bytheir luck. BobFord slipped his

.45 Smith andWesson out of hisholster and pointed it at the backof Jesse's head. Steadying himself,he squeezed the trigger.

James turned, stared wild-eyedfor a split-second, and then fell tothe floor. The brothers ran fromthe death scene, Bob shoutingloudly, "I just killed Jesse James!"

At Jesse's funeral, his motherbecame hysterical, wailing, "Jesse!Jesse!

They have taken you from me,the miserable traitors!" His bodywas taken to the Kearney farmand buried beneath a tree.

Jesse James and his 16-yearreign of terror included the rob-bing of a dozen banks, seventrains, and five stagecoaches in 11

states. The number of times hekilled is anyone's guess. Many stillthink of him as a folk hero, although the reality is a legacywritten in cold blood.

As far as Robert Ford, killingJesse James didn't help the 21-year-old the way he thought itwould. Right after blowing theoutlaw legend's head apart, Fordsurrendered to local authorities. He was tried for murder, convict-ed, and pardoned immediately byMissouri Governor Crittenden.Public sentiment held the Fordsas cowards. As for rewardmoney, they may have receivedas little as $500 apiece, with thegovernor and others keeping thelarger share.

Bob Ford toured the West in ashow called "How I Killed JesseJames" but was almost lynched in

more than one city. Whenever hewas low on funds, he'd sell one ofseveral versions of "the gun thatshot Jesse James."

In Jimtown (present Creede,Colo.), Ford set up a saloon --where he finally met his end. Aglory-seeking ex-lawman fromPueblo, Ed O'Kelley, walked intoFord's establishment on June 8,1892, said, "Hello Bob," and firedtwo barrels of a shotgun at Ford'sthroat.

This past weekwe had the privi-lege of havingtwo of our great-granddaughtersvisit us. Mydaughter thoughtit would be funfor them and saidshe would bringthem up for acouple of days. The two arecousins. One of them is 3 and theother is 5. They call me 'Pa Pa' andmy wife 'Gee Gee' and they visit ushere and we visit them inBakersfield.

This, however, was their firstovernighter without their mom-mies. The adventure started whenthe 3-year-old got sick coming upthe canyon and decorated the backseat of my daughter's SUV withthat morning's breakfast. But itwas soon forgotten when the kidscame boiling out of the car, ranand jumped into Pa Pa's arthriticarms. A big squeeze and munchkinkisses saved the day.

Not long after the hello's, thegirls were into the toy box. In aflash they had taken over the porchtable and had it set up for a teaparty-- I was the guest. I had to sitin a tiny chair and sport a napkin, while the 5-year-old poured tea (7-Up) and the 3-year-old passed the

crumpets (animal crackers). There was a fight about who

was going to sit in Pa Pa's lap dur-ing tea. They both did, one on eachknee. (Try holding an itty bittyteacup while balancing two wigglygirls. It'll work but it ain't easy!)

We did things on both days;took walks, waded in the river, hada picnic at Riverside Park, fed the"fishies" at the hatchery, swung onthe "swangs," had big ice creamcones that dripped, didn't takenaps, and searched for "special"rocks in our rock driveway.

We also fed the ravens, terror-ized the hummingbirds, lookedinto Pa Pa's workshop, and ham-mered a nail. Both did the samethings because the 3-year-oldwanted to do anything the 5-year-old did, and vice versa.

That night things had quieteddown when the 3-year-old realizedher mother wasn't there. After about of "I want my mommy!" andkisses and being held, she finallygave up.

When the visit was over and wewaved goodbye, my wife and Ilooked at each other and under-stood why it's mostly young folkswho have kids. I'm not sure us"oldies" could survive!
