Have you been wondering whatwill happen after retirement?

If you live in a big city you canget lost in thevastness of ametropolis thatdoesn't evenknow you'rethere. But if youmove to a smalltown, like here inthe Kern RiverValley, you arefresh meat.

With no effortat all and in less than a year, youcan become a member of, or acontributor to, several clubs. Youcan become a deacon or somesuch of one church or another. Youwill be asked to join the Chamberof Commerce and any of a numberof veterans organizations.

The KRV Historical Society hasseveral slots just waiting to befilled, such as a museum guide, nominating committee member ora chairman of something. Rotarywants you. The American Legionis looking for veterans. Pride Day,the valley cleanup campaign, islooking for helpers. The Fish andGame Habitat Club needs helpfeeding fish. Friends of theLibrary need more volunteers andwill sign you up in a heartbeat. Thelocal Radio Controlled AircraftClub needs new members and willteach you to fly. The Lake Patrolvolunteer group is looking forpatrol persons, both men and

women. Help is needed at the fishhatchery. The new BMX trackassociates would like you to be apart of this new venture and willsign you up forthwith. There areseveral RV clubs in the area, alllooking for new blood. You couldteach AARP driver safety to sen-iors. The theatre groups are justmoaning for actors, singers, stage-hands and best boys. The list goeson and on.

Understand, this is only a partiallisting of opportunities for commu-nity involvement. Henceforth, never let it be said that you arebored and there's nothing to do.

However, there are only 24hours in a day. So here is mywarning to those who retire andmove here and who want lots oftime for reflection, fishing, andsolitude. Tell no one where youlive. Build a big fence. Join noth-ing. Hike alone, picnic alone.Never go anywhere more thanonce, sign nothing and be con-stantly on guard for offers to joinanything, no matter how innocent.Never raise your hand in meetings. In fact don't go to meetings.

That said, and in spite of mywarnings, one day you will waver, your defenses will fail, and in thenot too distant future you too willjoin the ranks of the volunteer.

Welcome, it's inevitable!

Wofford Heights resident RodMiddleworth, a retired securitymanager for Pacific Bell, is aninstructor for the local AARPDriver Safety Program.

Our Valley, Our Earth

A philosophical asideRon BolyardKern River Courier Columnist

(Ed. –this week Ron digressesfrom his scholarly study of geolo-gy and puts forth his opinion of avery interestingsubject.)

The main rea-son that I dis-cussed the meth-ods of age dat-ing in the lastthree articleswas that I want-ed the reader tounderstand thatthe dates thatgeologists, archeologists and allscientists place on artifacts, theuniverse and the earth, historicalevents, etc. are not pulled from avacant sky! There is good sci-enceinvolvedwith thedetermi-nation ofthe datesand theyare credi-ble withinthe limitsof themethodand thepresent technology. Each year, the dating techniques areamended by the "fine tuning" ofthe known procedures and withthe advent of new methods ofmeasurement. Science marcheson and they get better as timeflies.

I understand the disparitybetween Geologic time andCreation time. It is importantthat each person on earth weighand weave the available infor-mation into a matrix that is logi-cal and believable to them. As aGeological Christian, I have diffi-culty in ascertaining the use ofshort time vs. long time. But Iwill say that it does not matter tome! Why? Because I live eachday knowing that I am hereNOW and that I must enjoywhat I see before me now with-out contemplating the time ittook to place what I see beforeme! Whew!

I know this is a copout, but itis my way to cope with the timedisparity. Each person must seektheir own understanding andpersonally enjoy what is sur-

roundingthem.

Enoughof my phi-losophy. Itis time toreturn tothe scienceof geologyand howwe relate tothose

things we see before us.Until next time...

Ron Bolyard is a retired geolo-gist and has developed an “acuteinterest” in the geology of thesouthern Sierra Nevada since hemoved here in 1999.

Previews of new DVDs by DNA Smith

Released the week of Aug.23:

PICK OF THE WEEKThere aren't any major movie

releases this week, but BoyHowdy are there some awe-some TV series boxed sets com-ing out!

Lost: TheComplete Sixth &Final Season/Lost:The CompleteCollection(Unrated) -- Twohuuuuge releasesfor Losties thisweek: The finalseason's boxed setand a massive,goodie-laden col-lection of the com-plete series.

The Season 6set is just aboutwhat you'dexpect: All theepisodes, audiocommentaries, bloopers, delet-ed scenes, a couple of supple-mental featurettes, plus themuch-hyped coda featuring theadventures of Hugo and BenLinus after the events of thefinale as they take on the job ofbeing caretakers of the island.

"The Complete Collection" ismore than just a boxed set of allsix seasons. It's 38 discs (one ofwhich contains all-new never-before-seen content); more than30 hours of bonus material;plus, a replica of the island, episode guide, an ankh, blacklight and a playable Senet gamewith black and white stones.

The packaging of "TheComplete Collection" is simplyawesome. Of course, Awesomecomes at a price, so expect topony up anywhere from $150 to$230.

Pawn Stars: Season Two(Unrated) -- Just about every-one has their reality-show guiltypleasure. Some folks get theirkicks with the guidos on the"Jersey Shore," but for mymoney, I'll take Las Vegas and

the Harrison clan. The History Channel's "Pawn

Stars" is the perfect storm ofkitsch, white-trash drama andHigh Weirdness. It's like"Antiques Roadshow" made ababy with the gang from"American Chopper."

Every Monday night, aparade of desperate individualsenter the Harrisons' pawn shop

in Las Vegas. Somehave odd or inter-esting stuff to sell, like an antique bar-ber chair or a rarecoin or pinballmachine, or vintageArmy flamethrower.Others bring inthings -- like thelegendary TajMahal Treasure --that make you ask,"Why are theseidiots trying to sellthis at a pawn shopinstead of auction-ing it off atChristies?"

It's this bizarremix of the mun-

dane, odd and outright mind-blowingly ridiculous that makes"Pawn Stars" one of the mostentertaining reality shows onTV. The Season Two set con-tains all 32 episodes and somebonus footage.

By Cindy Elavsky

Q: Christopher Walken hasalways been a favorite of mine, and I wonder what is comingup in his future, project-wise? -- Elva P., Fort Worth, Texas

A: The versatile 67-year-old actorhas many big-screen movie projectsin the works, including "TheIrishman," "Life's a Beach," "A Girland a Gun" and "WildOats," the latter of whichjust started filming andis a comedy co-starringChristina Ricci, ShirleyMacLaine and BillPullman. WhileChristopher is an excel-lent dramatic actor, Ilove to see him cut-up ina comedy, so "WildOats" is one I'm especial-ly looking forward to.

***Q: I finally rented

"The Cove" and was disgustedand heartbroken to witness theslaughter of those beautiful dol-phins. Since the movie cameout, have things gotten betterover there in Japan? -- Julia S.,West Palm Beach, Fla.

A: I spoke with Ric O'Barry, long-time dolphin activist and subject ofthe award-winning documentary"The Cove." He is sad to report thatthe slaughter and capture of wilddolphins still occurs, albeit on a"lesser" scale.

"The dolphin slaughter beginsSept. 1 and goes through March,"he said. "During that period lastyear in that the town of Taiji, themayor and the city council imple-mented a no-kill policy. They werebringing dolphins in and capturingthem for the dolphin swim program-- the dolphin-captivity industry. Butthey let about 300 of them go. They

still kill pilot whales, but theystopped killing bottle-nosed dol-phins, probably thinking, 'That willappease them.' But we don't knowwhat's going to happen come thisSept. 1."

You can track Ric and his sonLincoln's progress on this hot-but-ton issue on Animal Planet's "BloodDolphins." The premiere episodeairs Aug. 27 (with an encore Sept.

3), and parts two andthree air Sept. 10 and17, respectively.

***Q: I just saw

NatashaHenstridge in theTV movie you rec-ommended, "TheDevil's Teardrop,"and I really likedit. What are someother things I cansee her in? --Lindsay D., via e-

mailA: Natasha told me that, while

she is mulling over different projectsat the moment, the next thing youcan see her in is the Aug. 29 episodeof Lifetime Television's hit "DropDead Diva." As Natasha explained:"I get to stir up some trouble. I playClaire Harrison, who is the partnerof the law firm with J Parker --Parker & Harrison. So J Parker andClaire Harrison have some history, and I go over there and make sometrouble, both businesswise and per-sonally."

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A relaxed moodearly in the week could give way to high-tempera-ture disputes. The Aries Lamb should resist beingpulled into heated quarrels that could really singeyour wool.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Satisfy that practi-cal obligation first, then you can feel free to indulgein your creative endeavors. Also, check for hidden oroverlooked areas where repairs might be overdue.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Home is still theTwins' major focus this week. But outside mattersbegin to take on added importance, especially thoseinvolving possible career moves.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A travel plan mightneed to undergo some considerable adjustmentbecause of unexpected changes. Keep an open mindand let the facts guide you.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Playing cat and mousewith a matter you don't really want to tackle wastestime, energy and, most important, an opportunity.Ask someone with experience to help you.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A shift inpolicy might not please you, but before you put up a"No Go" wall of resistance, examine the circum-stances. You might be quite pleasantly surprised bywhat you find.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Yesterday's

critiques about your methods might have alreadyevolved into today's praise for your achievements.Good for you.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An occa-sional temperamental flare-up might occur as youcontinue to help get things back to normal. Stay withit. You should soon get some idea of where to takethings next.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Anegative reaction to what you believe was a well-deserved request might mean that you need toreconsider your position and make changes.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19)There's always room for someone new at the SeaGoat's table. Someone new this week could bring amessage you've been waiting a long time to hear.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A pile-on of personal matters this week might seem toooverwhelming to deal with. But handling them on aone-by-one basis could have you out from under itby the weekend.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A friend mightneed your good advice regarding a matter. Be sup-portive. But unless you can be absolutely sure youhave all the facts, be careful about any suggestionsyou might be asked to offer.

BORN THIS WEEK: Few things make you hap-pier than bringing people together and helping toforge new friendships.

Oftentimes it is hard in this valleywe live in to see larger prospectiveson things, real estate being one ofthem. We are kinda on our own uphere, which I love! However, beingsomewhat isolat-ed, it is good topay attention totrends in otherparts of the coun-try. I say thisbecause last weekI was in a smalltown calledMustang,Oklahoma (right outside ofOklahoma City) for several days. Iwas there on vacation and torecord a CD with my band-matesfor our band Allasso. After all thatwas done we went around andlooked at Oklahoma real estate justto kill some time. We saw somenewer neighborhoods and someolder neighborhoods and walkedthrough a beautiful brand newhome in a very nice newer neigh-borhood. For one thing, their con-struction methods are differentback there because of weather. Weget the occasional earthquakewhich can wreak havoc, but theyget tornadoes, sleet, freezing rain, fog, snow, on and on in the winterand in the summer they are as hotas us but the humidity is real high.Feels like a sauna when you walkoutside on some days. The part ofOklahoma that we were in has a

very high water table so most ofthe homes are brick, with 2X6 wallson the inside. Very nice homes, very well built and most are big, about 1800-2500 sq feet.

What struck me the most, though, were their real estateprices, and how similar ours are. Ihad always thought and hadalways been told that Californiareal estate is much more priceythan the rest of the country. Well, turns out that is true, in most areasof California. For us, however, it isdifferent. We have some of the low-est prices in the state on averagehere in the Kern River Valley. Backin Oklahoma, homes were goingfor about 85 bucks a square foot, for a new place. Here, Kernvillegoes for that and more, but manyareas of the valley are not, they aregoing for significantly less. I justbought my home for about $52 persq foot and just sold two others inLake Isabella at around $78 or soper square foot. That is good!Oklahoma has historically hadsome of the lower priced real estatein the country, and we are rightthere with them on our values. Thisis a huge buyer’s market, and rightnow interest rates are the lowestthey have ever been. A 30-yearmortgage is sitting at about 4.5%right now. So, as I always say, goout and buy something!

Letter to the CourierDear Kern River Courier,

Dick Blomgren left his home in Squirrel Valley on July29 and headed up Shadow Mountain Road to his newbuilding site. When he got to Big Springs, he saw MikeMollenauer and his friend, Mike Hosking, alongside theroad waving at him and pointing to the rear of a vacantlot. He could see smoke from a fire that appeared to be justgetting started.

Mike and his friend got shovels from their truck andheaded back there to put it out. Mike called the fire depart-ment.

Dick got a shovel and headed back to the fire, and thenremembered that he had a weed eater in his truck andwent back to get it. It was out of gas, so he had to fill thetank, and then headed back to the fire.

The weed eater was very helpful in controlling the firebut the wind was blowing the fire into a lot of heavy weedgrowth and brush so they had their hands full but man-aged to keep it under control until the fire department gotthere and finished the job.

Talk about timing – the two Mikes and Dick driving bythere just as the fire started and having the means to con-trol it!
