We welcomed a new student into

ESC 4 this Term!

Meet Damien! He’s a big

Collingwood supporter and has an

avid imagination. If you see him

around the school, make sure you

say hi and give him a fist bump.

Our class is getting ready for the

Pop Up Shops in week 7. We have

been busy creating posters for our enterprise and are

very excited to sell our final product. Come down and

see our stall on Monday 27th August at 11.30am.

We will see you there!

As part of our HASS studies this term the students have

learned about Biomes. In week 3 and 4 we focussed on

the Wheatbelt which is in the Mediterranean Biome. It

is a fertile area and good for food production. Everyone

made a map of the area, discussed the main foods

produced, ground wheat with stones and made

damper. We have also started growing wheat in our

grass heads..

Leeming ESC has a new app that can be downloaded from

iTunes or Google Store.

NOTE: Please be aware that at present there are two apps

for Leeming ESC. Please make sure you select the

Skoolbag one NOT Theme Solutions. If you have previously

downloaded the Theme Solutions app we apologise for the

inconvenience but there are more functions available on

Skoolbag. Please download the app and take a moment to

see what is available. There is information about the

school (term dates, school development days, stationery

list), newsletters, uniform shop, canteen menu etc. Check

out the calendar, this will keep you up to date on activities

planned and if the venue is offsite a map will show you the

location.

The school will use the app to send messages to groups of

people e.g. from a particular class, afterschool

bushrangers, school council members or the whole school

community. To set up the group messages you would like

to receive on the bottom right of the home page select

‘More’, then ‘Setup Push Notifications’, then turn on the

notifications you wish to receive. Messages can also be

sent to the whole school. This does not need to be

selected.

eForms is another good function of the App. Change of

Details and Absentee Notifications can be submitted

directly to school via the app and in future permission notes

will also be available. We hope this app will be a

convenient way we can further enhance the communication

process between school and home. Links are below

The year 8 students have been continuing their hard

work. Below are some of the students thoughts about

the lessons they are enjoying so far this term. Dance

and Clubs have been a highlight for most students and

they have all been working hard on their spelling,

reading and writing.

Sian: I work so hard and I like to play with my friends. I

like going to Clubs and I like to work in class and learn

how to read.

Nabillah: I love dancing and doing work in class

because I love learning how to spell and read. I like

hanging out with the girls at lunch.

Adam: I really like going to clubs and dance. I have

been working really hard in class and feel really

responsible and grown up.

YuJia: I like going on the computer and listening to

music.

Charlotte: I like going to sport and music with Mrs

Cullen. I like playing with Jack and Adam on the oval at

lunch.

Poppy: I enjoy doing dance and just hanging out with

my friends at lunch. I am working really hard at my

writing and am very proud of myself.

Jack: I like Mrs Cullen and lunch. I like going to Music

Rocks and playing piano.

Term 3 has seen ESC 6 with our Business and

Enterprise hats on! We started making our product for

the Leeming ESC Pop Up Shops in week 7. The

students in ESC 6 are making hand shaped bowls made

out of clay. So far we have used our hands to mould

the clay, and used a range of objects to create

different shapes and textures in the hands. We dried

them in a bowl to create the shape we wanted, and

used PVA glue to create a glazed effect. Next week we

will be painting them and creating eye catching

posters to advertise our product.

In the school holidays it was NAIDOC Week, at the

beginning of the term we researched famous

Aboriginal people in celebration of the Aboriginal and

Torres Strait Islander culture, history and

achievements. We used our iPads and created an

informative poster each which is displayed in our

classroom. Some of the famous Aboriginal people we

learned about included Adam Goodes, Cathy Freeman,

Archie Roach and David Unaipon.

It is hard to believe that we are half way through term 3

already. The ESC 5 students are working on displaying

responsibility, independence and cooperative skills, at

school and during Community Based Learning.

We have been very busy caring for our plants and

learning how all living things are connected. The

students are drawing and measuring their plants each

week. We are hoping the sun shines and our plants

grow strong ready to sell at the ‘Pop Up Shop’ on the

27th of August.

As part of being a Bush Ranger, we plan to run a

recyclable/upcycled stall to promote the benefits of

sustaining resources to care for our environment. We

are asking families if they would like to donate any

unwanted items for our second hand stall. We hope

you are able to come along on the day and find a

wonderful bargain.

ESC 8 has begun their 5 week Workplace Induction

course at GSI. Each Wednesday the students travel to

GSI in Canning Vale and listen to a facilitator speak

about the expectations of an employee in the

workplace and important aspects of OHS in the work

environment. The students actively participate in open

discussions before completing the required documents

to record their learning. This is a valuable experience

for our students as they transition into senior school.

The Pop Up Shops are fast approaching and we have

been creating some colourful key rings and coasters to

sell, along with a number of jewellery items.

Thank you to all the parents who have made contact

with me regarding their child’s My Plan review. This is a

terrific opportunity to see the progress your child is

making towards their future.

As part of our Work Right lessons, we have been going

on various industry tours. As a class we brainstormed

some of the places we could visit to learn more about

different jobs, roles, responsibilities, safety equipment,

safety clothing (PPE) and OHS processes and

procedures in each industry. We started by looking into

our immediate school community. We approached the

school canteen ladies and asked if they would be happy

to provide us with a tour of our Leeming SHS school

canteen and explain to us the daily roles and

responsibilities and the importance of PPE and hygiene.

The students loved being part of this tour and were

amazed at the amount of preparation, estimating,

organisation, timetabling and budgeting that is required

to run an efficient canteen service to our school. The

students were so grateful they asked if they could write

a thank you letter to the canteen ladies. This was such a

valuable experience for the students and the staff. We

were also able to visit our school uniform shop and

learn about their procedures and job responsibilities

too. We are very appreciative to have such positive

staff and school community where we all support and

contribute to student learning.

On behalf of ESC 7 we would like to say thank you to

Leeming SHS and Leeming SHS ESC staff and community

for your support and generosity.

Sarah Priestley

Students in ESC 11 have been learning all about the

biomes of the world and the food that we grow and

eat. Students have made grass heads to grow some

wheat, have learnt about how we turn wheat into flour

and bread and have made damper to eat.

Students will also be learning all about how we can

save water in our dry Mediterranean climate and will

be making posters to teach other students these water

saving tricks.

Mid term already and we are so pleased to report that

students are all working hard and are producing great

work in all areas of the curriculum. We have amazing

students who are currently increasing their work

experience days, this is such a positive step in preparing

for the future. Congratulations to William and Sarah

who are taking this exciting step forward. Good luck to

both students!

Last Friday was our first experience at Notre Dame

University with the fantastic students from the PE

faculty who prepared energetic Phys Ed lesson for our

students. This program will continue over 10 weeks and

benefits for our students are enormous. We used public

transport to Fremantle and return which provided a

fabulous opportunity to practise and refine skills we’ve

learnt over the years. Thank you to the Uni students

and their supervisor Sian for this very professional

session for our students.

Johanna Lee

It has been a very busy term with all students working

exceptionally hard to complete their Courses of Study,

Workplace Learning, SBT Traineeships and Community

Based Learning.

Mr David McMahon, Educational Officer from

Transperth visited to discuss safety, problem solving

and journey planning with a hands on tour of

Transperth’s rail and bus system.

Students have engaged in leisure activities including

mini golf at Murdoch Pines Golf and Recreation Park

and ten pin bowling at Super Bowl Melville to meet

ASDAN Money Progression outcomes. Lots and lots of

fun!

Since the beginning of Term 3, we have joined the

Seesaw app and I hope the pictures posted have been

enjoyed by all. Students in the coming weeks will be

very busy making some yummy goodies to sell at

Leeming Pop Up Shops on Monday, 27th August, 2018.

We are selling Teddy Bear Trains, Teddy Bear Cars and

Teacup Biscuits, Second Hand DVDs kindly donated by a

member in the community and running a sausage

sizzle.

All proceeds from our enterprise will go towards Graduation in Term 4. We hope to see lots of parents at the Leeming Pop Up Shops and many thanks to the parents and students for their participation in their My Plan this term. I urge all students at this point of their education to

attend every day, be on time and absorb as much

learning as possible in the last two terms. More

importantly, “

Absorb your schooling life, your friends and the

memories yet to be had.”

Our Year 10 students started their specialised Notre

Dame Program this term, where they are partnered up

with a “buddy” who develops an individualised sports

program for each student. Their “buddies” are 3rd year

physical education teachers in training and this is part

of their program for university. The Leeming students

were very excited to meet their buddies and show them

around the school the first week. This gave the Notre

Dame students a chance to get to know them and start

planning their individualised program. The rest of the

program will take place at Notre Dame gym in

Fremantle. As you can see the first week was a great

success.

Semester two is off to a fantastic start in the Workplace

Learning department!

We have welcomed Troy Tan to our program, as he

continues his placement at Activ Bentley. He has

adjusted to new faces very well and is doing an amazing

job working on the airline headsets.

Some of our year 12 and 13 students have increased

their work experience days at Activ, GSI Retail and Spine

and Limb Foundation. Well done to Angus, Liam, Isaac,

Sarah, William, Christy and Britteny.

Students have been fortunate enough to have new host

employers come on board this semester at Mint

Childcare Centre, Bounce, Cupid’s Delight, Nest

Garden’s and Jaylea’s Patisserie. We are very thankful

for these opportunities.

At our week 5 assembly we announced Angus Reed as

our wonderful “Employee Of The Month”. Angus

received this special award for his fantastic efforts with

persevering with some challenging tasks at the Spine

and Limb Foundation. He was commended for attending

4 days of work experience each week within two

workplaces. Awesome Angus!!

We are busy now preparing for the upcoming Year 10

work experience in term 4. We look forward to getting

to see these students in their workplaces. Exciting times

ahead!
