To encourage unity against terrorism, the

National Security Coordination Secretariat recently

ran a TV campaign with the tagline, ‘Be as One’.

The campaign visual was simple but powerful. A

stick of straw may be weak but a whole bunch

cannot be easily broken.

Another call for unity was activated at the recent

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum,

which saw member countries come together to

work on solutions for a sustainable recovery in a

post-crisis world. The theme, ‘Sustaining Growth,

Connecting the Region’, builds on APEC’s efforts

to promote economic growth, cooperation, trade

and investment across the Asia-Pacific region.

In the Keppel Group, collective strength is a value

that resonates strongly too. It is only through

leveraging our network, experience and core

competences that the Group will realise its vision

as the provider of choice for solutions to the

Offshore & Marine Industries, Sustainable

Environment and Urban Living.

We have demonstrated that we are stronger

through the sum of parts in many Groupwide

initiatives.

In November, for relief aid to communities affected

by disasters in Indonesia, the Philippines and

Vietnam, the Keppel Group raised a significant sum

of about $600,000 (see story on page 42) through

rallying support amongst employees, customers

and business associates. In thanking all who have

contributed, Keppel Corporation’s CEO Mr Choo

Chiau Beng pointed out that the successful

fundraising was truly a reflection of collective

strength and that together, we can make a

difference.

The same sentiment is echoed in the slogan for

the Group’s Safety Convention (see Special Focus)

this year, ‘Safety Starts with Me, Together We Care’

which drives home the importance of

accountability to one another and working as one

team for a work-safe environment. Keppelites

across the Group can share best practices and

lessons learnt through the electronic information

portal, K’onnect. By making information accessible,

safety efforts can be better co-ordinated and

synergised.

Staying connected and sharing provide cords to

collective strength. Even with our different

backgrounds, experiences and places of operation,

there can be unity in diversity when we share the

same cause and course.

Contrary to the conventional saying that it was

the straw that broke the camel’s back, Keppel

welcomes more straws into our pool. For Keppel,

we need straws to help us break not backs, but

barriers to reach new strengths in innovation and

achievement.

WHAT IS YOUR VIEW ONTHE RECENT RECOVERYIN OIL PRICE? DO YOUTHINK WITH OIL PRICERETURNING TO US$70TO U$80 A BARREL,THERE WILL BE MORERIG ORDERS?The financial crisis whichstarted last year wasunprecedented. Over thepast year, we have not seenan influx of orders as we didbefore the crisis started.

We are fortunate to have abacklog of orders which willsee us through to 2012.

Optimistic about offshoreWith the recovery in oil prices, Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) isconfident of securing a good level of new orders over the next year. Mr TongChong Heong, CEO of Keppel O&M shared this and other insights in an interviewwith Reuters. Keppelite reproduces extracts of the interview:

WHAT ARE YOUREXPECTATIONS OF NEWORDERS FOR 2009 AND2010? DO YOU EXPECTNEW ORDERS TO COMEAT LOWER MARGINS ORPROFITS?For 2009, including theLetter of Intent for ourFloaTEC, LLC joint venture,we will have new orders ofabove US$1 billion. We areworking hard to get morecontracts and if theconditions continue toimprove, I expect 2010 to bebetter than 2009. We aretargeting for $2 billion worthof new orders next year.

Regarding margins, thisdepends on the competitivelandscape as we would bidat market price. We areraising productivity levels andmanaging costs, so we hopeto maintain good margins.

We will not bid at all costas it is not price alonewhich customers take intoconsideration. They alsoevaluate execution capability, reputation and trackrecord. This is where we havean edge.

DO YOU EXPECT TOBENEFIT FROM THEPETROBRAS ORDERS?We expect to get a fair share

In 2008, the price of oil wentup to as high as US$140 perbarrel. As long as the priceof oil remains within a rangeabove US$70 per barrel, most oil companies wouldcontinue to spend on theirprojects. We rather not seeextremely high oil prices.

At current oil price levels, itis more viable for oilcompanies to maintain orincrease their capitalexpenditure and that is goodnews for us. Over the pasttwo months, there havebeen more active enquiries.

of the Petrobras orders, aswe have an established yardin Brazil. We will participatein the bids and we arecurrently studying the tenderdocuments carefully for thefirst batch of seven drillshipsand two semisubmersibles.

However we are mindful ofthe intense competition. There are new yards beingbuilt in Brazil and othersbeing planned.

At our BrasFELS yard, we canbuild a couple or moresemisubmersibles anddrillships. The yard is alsocapable of doing repairs andupgrading work for foreigndrilling contractors. We willaim to maximise the currentcapacity at the BrasFELSyard before consideringexpanding the capacitythere. We are discussingwith our potential partnerson possible expansionopportunities in Brazil.

WHAT EXPANSIONPLANS DO YOU HAVE?We are looking for acquisitionswhich will add value to ourbusiness. Examples wouldbe distressed assets whichwe can turn around. Theregions which we arelooking at are Brazil, Mexico,Caspian and Africa. keppelite

ON OPPORTUNITIESIN ASIAThe growth of Asia, notto be crippled by thefinancial crisis, will createrising opportunities forinfrastructure developersand investors.

With rapid urbanisation asa driver of economicgrowth in many Asiancountries over the next twodecades, and increasingattention given tosustainable development, the need for infrastructureinvestment is trulyimmense.

Mr Chua Chee Wui (centre), CEO of KIE, shares his views on the challenges of infrastructure development at the Summit

During the Summit, Mr Chua Chee Wui, CEO of KIE, was invited toshare his views at a panel discussion on ’Asia’s InfrastructureChallenge’. Excerpts of his speech are reproduced here:

ON PRIVATISINGTHE WATER SECTORBasic infrastructure projectssuch as water are oftenseen as public “rights” forwhich the value of theinfrastructure service isfrequently priced belowactual delivery costs.

With proper consultations ininfrastructure reforms andsubsidies given to privatedevelopers to keep the pricingdown, governments cansuccessfully implement thePrivate-Public Partnershipschemes to finance projects inthe water sector.

ON PRIVATE-PUBLICPARTNERSHIPSKey to a successfulpartnership between thepublic and private sectoris a healthy, openrelationship.

Governments also need toshow that they havethe political will andability to assure privateinfrastructure investorsthat their investmentswill be safeguarded.

It is no easy feat breakingthrough ice in the harshArctic environment butVarandey did it. Cuttingthrough solid ice of up to1.7m thick, the secondicebreaker built by KeppelSingmarine surpassed manyrigorous tests in the Arctic.

From 12 to 23 October 2009,Varandey underwent an Arcticice trial programme developedby Finnish Consultant, ILS andendorsed by the RussianMaritime Register of Shippingin the Arctic.

reaching their destination inthe Arctic, they faced morearduous challenges such asworking in conditions ofminimum sunlight, strongbitter winds and temperaturesas low as -15°C.

Tests were conducted on theice sheets by drilling tomeasure its thickness, as icesamples were collected toassess the salinity andhardness. The manoeuvringcharacteristics and speedlevels of the vessel were alsotested with excellent resultsshowing Varandey’s criticalcapabilities.

Recounting the experience,Mr Lek shared, “The successof the ice trial is due to goodteamwork and I am proud ofthe vessel’s ice breakingperformance.

It was lucky number threefor Uniquely Singapore asshe scored her first podiumwin in the Clipper 09-10 withthird position in Race 3. Theteam crossed the finish linein Table Bay, Cape Town,South Africa in pitchdarkness and heavy season Thursday, 12 November2009.

An exhausted but exhilaratedUniquely Singapore skipper,Jim Dobie was over themoon with his team’sperformance. He beamed,“We’ve got the taste for itnow – you don’t want to letgo when you get the podiumplaces. The team feels like aracing team now and we’redefinitely going to keep ourplace up the top.”

It was a sentiment echoed bythe only Singaporean round-the-world crew member onboard, Nicole Ho whoshared, “From when we firststarted in Rio, we knew itwas going to be different –the whole atmosphere’sdifferent, the whole team isdifferent. Everyone was reallydetermined to show we’rebetter than eighth.

“On the first leg we werereally unsure about a lot ofthings and we were tryingvery hard to get into racemode but we had so manychallenges. This time round

This is the first timethe Clipper Race has astopover in Rio. How didyou feel being the firstKeppel Ambassador tobe part of this?I felt proud to be a Keppelite. It must have been atremendous effort to havebrought the Clipper Race toRio. With Rio hosting the2016 Olympics, the arrival ofthe Clipper fleet would havegiven the Brazilians a taste ofwhat they can expect hostingthe Olympic sailing events. Itwas wonderful to have metfellow Keppelites and tofinally visit our operations inBrazil since I had worked onsome Brazilian projects.

What did you miss mostduring the Race?In no particular order,I missed my privacy, freshwater showers, a drybed, walking without gettingthrown around and being upto date on world news.

How do you intendto share your Clipperexperience with others?I had shared my Clipper

adventures with fellowKeppelites in Brazil. Thatwhetted my appetite to sharewith more Keppelites anyopportunity I can whenI return to Singapore. I alsointend to share myexperiences via Facebook toreach out to my network offriends outside of Keppel onthis extraordinary adventure.

Are you able to applyyour sailing experienceat work?Sailing is like business. Youhave to set a goal (same forbusiness), understand theweather and the elements

(market forecast), decide on acourse (strategy), select a sail(use the right tools), continueto trim the sails (refine theexecution) and keep the teambe it in the office or the crew, motivated. I have learnt “notto sweat the small stuff” andappreciate the smaller thingsin life.

Would you join theClipper Race again?I would love to embark onanother leg on this Race if Ican. I definitely recommendothers to apply for Clipper11-12 Race. It’s truly an eyeopening experience!

Amazing RaceKeppel Ambassador Thomas Pang, GM, Corporate Development, Keppel Offshore & Marineconcluded his Clipper journey with bear hugs from his wife and Keppelites when UniquelySingapore sailed into Rio. Thomas shares on his unforgettable journey.

it’s fast sail changes, fastreactions to things – we’vehad some mishaps as wellbut the experience wegathered in Leg 1 is massive. When you reach Leg 2 you’re

beginning to do it so fast it’samazing.”

Nicole added on a message forthe other teams: “I think we’llstill be the friendly lot but

watch out for us – our teamwill get better and better.”

It was a morning of fun andlearning as the participantswere treated to a multi-sensory experience of theBrazilian Amazon throughan interactive exhibition. They were impressed withthe installations of videos, images and rivetinginformation that unveiled thenatural diversity and culturalrichness of the ecosystem.

More importantly, theexhibition showed howsustainable alternativesexist in the region toharmonise development andconservation. Always on thelookout for meaningfulopportunities to nurturecommunities, Keppel playeda major role in this exhibitionby sponsoring $20,000.
