Day 8: Amboseli Early this morning we visit anearby Maasai village. Later: more game drivesand time for relaxing at our lodge in the foot-hillsof Kilimanjaro beneath a copse of feathered acaciatrees. B,L,D

Day 9: Amboseli/Ngorongoro ConservationArea Leaving Amboseli this morning, we crossthe border into Tanzania at Namanga. This after-noon we reach spectacular Ngorongoro, aUNESCO Conservation Area, InternationalBiosphere Reserve, and site of NgorongoroCrater, the world's largest intact volcanic caldera.On the crater's floor is Africa in microcosm:grassland, swamps, lakes, forests, mountains, andwildlife, including the rare black rhino, hippos,wildebeest, zebra, eland, Grant's and Thomson'sgazelles, and black-maned male lions. Day 10: Ngorongoro Crater On our morningtour of the 100-square-mile crater we have ouronly chance to see all of Africa's “Big Five”– lion,buffalo, rhinoceros, elephant, and leopard – inone place. We also may see semi-nomadic Maasaitribespeople grazing their cattle alongside the ani-mals. This afternoon is at leisure at our lodge onthe crater's rim. B,L,D

Day 11: Ngorongoro Crater/SerengetiNational Park We're bound this morning forthe Serengeti, the Maasai’s 5,700-square-mile“endless plain” considered Africa's finest park andone of the world's last great wildlife refuges. On

the way we visit 31-mile Olduvai Gorge, where in1959 anthropologist Mary Leakey discovered the1.8 million-year-old skull of Australopithecus boisei– and revolutionized the study of human evolu-tion. We reach our Serengeti lodge then embarkon an afternoon game drive here. B,L,D

Day 12: Serengeti Twice a year (Nov-Dec andMar-May), some 1.3 million wildebeest, 200,000zebra, and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle migrate tonew grazing lands between Masai Mara and theSerengeti, sparking one of nature's most spectac-ular sights. But the Serengeti's vast treeless plainsteem with animal life year-round, and this is thebest place to see lion and cheetah up close. Wetake two game drives today. B,L,D

Bordered by the dramaticWestern Escarpment of the Great Rift Valley,Lake Manyara is notable for its abundant birdlife (some 400 species, including masses of pinkflamingoes), diverse vegetation, tree-climbinglions, and hippos.
