NOTE FROM THE LILY PAD

Susan AlexanderGFWC Kentucky President

Dear Clubwomen,

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your attendance at Summer Workshop! We had over 100 club ladies present! The state officers presented wonderful breakout sessions that provided the clubwomen with knowledge and the vision for this new administration.

The governors and vice governors, state chairmen and club presidents came, they learned, and they left ready and eager to pass along important information regarding the 2014-2016 Administration.

I am looking forward to visiting each district’s fall conference. It will be a busy time but I am excited to hear what each club is doing while they are “Living the Volunteer Spirit.”

As you read this magazine remember we are “Unlocking Doors of Opportunity” and once you unlock a door it is important to share what you find. Send us word of your club events and projects. I know without a doubt each club, big or small, does amazing things that we want to hear about.

All my best wishes to the heart and soul of GFWC Kentucky, you, the club members!

Susan Alexander, President GFWC Kentucky

Woman’s Club of St. Matthews visits and tours local firehouse

The ladies of the Woman’s Club of St. Matthews had the pleasure of being invited to the St. Matthews Firehouse for refreshments. Of course, they went. Nothing like being entertained by the wonderful firemen that protect your area.

The clubwomen were invited in appreciation of their donation of $3,500 for the purchase of a much-needed piece of equipment – an oxygen meter. As first responders, they were in need of an oxygen meter that fits on the finger of a person, to monitor their blood oxygen level.

This is the second piece of equipment the club has been able to purchase for the first responders. Last year, the club bought them a defibrillator.

After the demonstration of the oxygen meter, members were treated to a guided tour of the firehouse (even the sleeping and workout areas) and had the pleasure of seeing the firetrucks and all the equipment that is carried along on the firetrucks. It’s quite impressive to see the “jaws of life” up close. The clubwomen felt like kids again — taking a field trip to the firehouse. What fun!

Above, members of the Woman’s Club of St. Matthews stopped to pose with a firetruck during the tour of their local fire department. Below, Bev Potts presents a $3,500 check to the St. Matthews Fire and Rescue to cover the cost of a much-needed oxygen meter.

Radcliff Woman’s Club hosts Christmas in July The Radcliff Woman’s Club hosted Christmas in July

— a vendor’s village, dinner, and duction — on July 12, 2014. More than 200 people attended the festivities that raised funds for local scholarships and for Alzheimer’s research.

Clockwise from above left, Becky Brecht sat on the knee of Mrs. Claus (Maria Batistoni). Above right, a large crowd attended the event. Clubwomen served dinner to more than 200 attendees. An example of items auctioned. Members assisted the auctioneer by modeling with the auction items.

The clubwomen of Smiths Grove Woman’s Club held a Memorial Day Program on May 24 at a local cemetery. The week before, they had displayed around 200 flags at this same cemetery on Sunday, May 18 – a great project for Public Issues!

The club participated in the town’s Garden Glory Days on June 21 by sponsoring a bake sale, making cherry/limeade drinks, and conducting a raffle. They are raising money for the club’s Arts project. Members are trying to raise money to help purchase a kiln for the new art teacher.

Ann Renfrow, President of the Livermore Woman’s Club, presents a $5,127 check to Muscular Dystrophy Association Director of Business Development Kayla Aydt. Also in attendance were members of the 5K Committee, Jayne Johnson, Connie Baldwin, Mary Atherton, Ann Turner, Dianna Hoover and Michele Clark. Committee member Stella Gross was unavailable at the time of the photo.

The Livermore Woman’s Club presented a $5,127 check to Kayla Aydt, Muscular Dystrophy Association Director of Business Development, on May 13, 2014.

The check represented the proceeds of the club’s very successful 2nd Annual 5K Run/Walk held in Livermore on April 26, in support of the MDA. This contribution has been designated for use within McLean County for those who are affected by muscular dystrophy.

The club solicited and obtained 42 event sponsors who were very instrumental in the success of this venture.

According to Club President Ann Renfrow, “It was a joint effort and we couldn’t have done this without their help and the help of our club membership canvassing the county.”

They were also blessed with the work of Tessa Wilkerson. Tessa is a 17-year-old young lady from Livermore in McLean County, and the granddaughter of one of the club members. She has been dealing with muscular dystrophy since she was 10 months old. Both this year and last year, she designed her own T-shirts

Livermore Woman’s Club donates $5,127 to MDAfor her team, i.e. Tessa’s Team, and sold them at her school for the cause. Last year we were able to raise $3,393 and because of Tessa’s diligence, we topped the $5,000 mark this year with a $5,127 donation.

A lot of local people donated their time, effort and sweat equity. They helped club members clean the 5K course, prepare the pavilion area and stand guard at all of the intersections where the participants passed. They manned the water stations, the finish

line and cheered on the participants throughout the course. There was a lot of hard work and a lot of love that went into this venture.

Bullitt County Woman’s Club donates close to $1000 to CASA!!The Fourth District Bullitt

County Woman’s Club held their annual Bake Sale, which includes a tasting and auction, in May.

Each clubwoman baked two of the same dish — one to be used for the “tasting” dinner and the other item to be auctioned. The community was invited, with attendees paying $5 to eat a dinner consisting of tastes of the various dishes.

Auctioneer-Realtor John Wigginton and Commonwealth Attorney Mike Mann provided pre-auction entertainment. After the tasting, the fun and auction began!

Hams sold for $200, bread for $40 and homemade pickles for $120!! This year the club raised $1800 in about two hours!!

Half of the money was to be donated to CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates for children.

Special guests were Third District Governor Teresa Schmidt and Third District Vice-Governor Beverly Potts.

Bake sale chairman and membership chairman Darlene Mann

has been chairing the bake sale for many years. She and her committee do a great job in raising funds for the club and for CASA!
