With all of the severestorm damage the Tristatehas endured over the pastyear, many homeownersare still in need of roofattention to get them safe-ly through this winter.

Many homeownersworry about whether ornot they can have a newroof installed in the cold.

The experts at RoofTime have been installingroof systems for the past15 years, and have somespecific tips for getting agood roof in the winter.

Could you? According to Roof

Time staff, you can roof incold weather but the qual-ity of the finished roof canbe affected by wet orsnowy shingles.

Roof Time only allowstheir crews to install ondry days. Many shinglemakers have specific rulesabout temperatures. Ingeneral, the magic num-ber is 26 degrees.

It may be possible toinstall roofs in colder tem-peratures but profession-als won’t attempt it.Shingle roofs can actuallyshatter if nailed in coldertemperatures, allowingwinds to blow them off.

Shingle makers don’trestrict their warranties,

based solely on installa-tion temperatures of 26 to100 degrees.

This means that yournew 30-year dimensionalshingle, installed over thewinter, has the exact war-ranty as a roof installed atany other time of the year.

All shingles need toundergo thermal sealing, which can take longer inthe cold. Shingles mayappear uneven or“lumpy” according toMissy Shoemaker at RoofTime, for a few days afterbeing installed when it’scolder, but the nails andthe sealing strips provideprotection until the shin-gle can “relax.”

According to one ofCincinnati’s most experi-enced (32 years) crewforeman, Greg Lykens atRoof Time, the No. 1 tip isthat no roofing gunsshould be used when tem-peratures are less than 30degrees.

“At Roof Time, wehand nail all the winterinstallations, at no addi-tional charge to home-owners,” said Lykins.

All steep slope roofershave to be careful thatthey don’t damage theunderlayment which canbecome brittle in cold

weather. Only 30-pound felt or

synthetic underlaymentsshould be used and allunderlayments should beinstalled using cap nails, not staples.

On a roof tear-off,insist that only as muchroofing as can be newlyshingled in the same daybe attempted.

Too many homeownershave had their interiorceilings ruined by sur-prise winter storms thattarps and felt alone, couldnot withstand.

Winter in the Tristatetests your roof in waysunlike any other time ofyear. The most commonproblem in cold weatheris ice dams.

An ice dam formswhen snow melts andruns down the roof onlyto hit ice at the gutter line.

The trapped water can-not make it into the gut-ters and leaks into thehouse walls. Roof Timeuses a product called “iceand water shield” togeth-er with aluminum drip-edge flashing, to preventice dams from damagingyour home and causingleaks.

This method provides

added protection for 3 feetalong a roof’s edge. Manyolder roofs do not haveice and water shieldinstalled.

If your roof is leakingbecause of ice dams thiswould be a good time tohave the roof re-doneproperly and insure thatice dams will not affectyour home ever again.

Roof Time has morewinter roofing tips for theDIY homeowner, just calland ask the office staff toemail them over!

Would you? Old roofshate cold winters. Winterweather only makes a badroof worse.

If your roof was badbefore winter, it can onlyget worse before spring. As the temperature fluctu-

ates, your shingles expandand contract causing curl-ing and cracking.

Curled shingles aredamaged by wet heavysnows; the weight of thesnow causes the shinglesto crack. Now you haveroof leaks. When snowfreezes it causes evenmore damage to the roof.

A good roofing con-tractor watches the weath-er and schedules roofinstallations between theworse weather days.

In Cincinnati there aremany days with brightsun and temperatures inthe upper fifties. LastFebruary, there was a fourday stretch where thetemperature reached 65degrees!

Roof Time staff wasready and able to installnew roofs that preventedleak problems for their

customers.Should you? Two reasons to consid-

er a winter roof job; needand price. Some home-owners simply have roofsin such bad shape thatthey cannot wait untilspring.

Looking to save asmuch money as possibleon a new roof?Homeowners who haveroofs installed during thewinter get the best priceof the year.

For the same reasonthat you get faster roofservice in the winter, youalso get a lower price thanduring the warmermonths.

According to JustinShoemaker of Roof Time, their estimators areinstructed to discount awinter installation by asmuch as 20 percent over

the same type of springjob!

Roof Time wants tokeep their crews busy andoffers steep discounts toavoid lay-offs.

By March, roofersbegin to get busy again,so their goal over the win-ter is to hang onto theirskilled labor force.

Professional roofersoffer the same labor war-ranty for a roof installedduring winter, as a roofinstalled any other time ofyear.

For example, RoofTime offers a long termlabor warranty in accor-dance with the MidwestRoofing ContractorsAssociation guidelines, without regard to the timeof the installation.

For a free rooftopinspection, complete withcolor digital pictures and

a written record of thefindings, contact A NewRoof Time in Cincinnati at513-753-TIME and inNorthern Kentucky at859-341-TIME

sidebarQuick roof tipsShingle Roof Damage:

Water leaks from ice andsnow are caused by interi-or heat from the house.Water from ice melting onthe roof is trapped andcreates an ice dam on theroof, gutters and down-spouts.

The water then takesthe path of least resistanceunder the roof system, orsideways and throughflashings, which were notdesigned to handle thiskind of moisture.

When this happens, interior water damage canoccur.

Skylights: Skylightscovered with ice andsnow may cause leakingbecause of the “weepholes” are covered.Internal condensationcan’t escape, causingwater.

Have the snow and iceremoved from around theskylight.

Make sure anyonewalking on your roof isaware of existing sky-lights, so they don’t dam-age them if they areburied by snow.

Roof Repairs: Whenyou spot leaks or watermarks on the walls or ceil-ing of your home, thedamage is already done.

Some roof repair opera-tions are relatively inex-pensive; nationally, thecost for asphalt shingleroof repair is about $575.

When ice damage islarge enough to warrantroof replacement,Americans pay an averageof around $6,000 to installa new asphalt roof.

The holidays are a greattime for families andfriends to come togetherand celebrate.

However, the holidaysare also a time of risk foruninvited pests – from bedbugs, spiders, mice andothers – invading andbeing brought into one’shome.

“Mice, rodents, spidersand other pests find theirway into homes by hidingin boxes of holiday decora-tions that have been storedin attics, basements andgarages since last season,”said Tim Leatherman, pres-ident of Perfection PestControl.

“Bed bugs can be intro-duced by unwitting travel-ers, furniture, or otherinfested items. Bed bugs

are excellent hitchhikersand hiders,” he said.

Bed bugs have been bignews this year. Fromoffices to schools to homes, they are being foundeverywhere.

Finding them can be aproblem. Perfection K9Services (a part ofPerfection) uses Beddy theBed Bug Dog to use her“scentsability” to find bedbugs.

See the website atwww.perfectionk9servic-es.com for information.

To prevent other pestsfrom coming into thehome, Leatherman recom-mends that homeownerskeep holiday decorations –especially items like driedfoliage, potpourri and

All I want for Christmas is theright gift, from UK to jewelry

Decades ago, when therhythm of life seemed moresedate, gift-givers probablyhad more time to invest inconsidering a gift and shop-ping for it.

Today’s hectic pace, how-ever, can make gift giving achallenge, even for the mostdedicated giver.

You can recapture thegrace and thoughtfulness of abygone era this holiday sea-son with a few tips:

• Food is a classic holiday

Agreat gift, given in away that tells the recipi-ent how much he or sheis valued, respected andwished well, is theessence of the holidayspirit.

gift. It can be personal(such as the recipi-ent’s favorite holidaycookies), or broadenough in appeal tosatisfy a group withvarying tastes (such asa box of chocolates fora family or officemates).

• A gift is a warmand touching way tosay “thank you.” Theholidays are a time for

celebration, but alsoto express gratitude –to those you love andalso to those withwhom you enjoy aprofessional relation-ship, whether it’s thebaby sitter or a client.

Thank-you giftsshould be planned inadvance to allowyourself plenty oftime to find just the

right, thoughtful gift.Tailor your thank-you giftaccording to the relation-ship you share with therecipient.

Something homemademight delight your child’steacher, while a businesscolleague would appreci-ate something light-heart-ed and surefire, likeMelting Snowman cook-ies.

• Play the thoughtfulhost and ensure yourguest room is wellstocked for the holidays. In addition to all thenecessities, don’t overlookthe niceties, which shouldinclude a modest yet cher-ished token that guestscan enjoy while they visit,or take with them whenthey depart.

Decades ago,Grandma might have seta decorative tin, filledwith homemade cookies,in the guest room for visi-tors to enjoy throughouttheir stay. Modern hostsmight present some indul-gent butter toffee forguests to savor.

• Be a helpful guest.Grandma would neverhave thought of arrivingat a party empty handed

during the holidays. You can improve upon

that classic thoughtfulnessby sending food giftsahead of time, rather thanbombarding your hostwith armloads of stuffwhen you walk throughthe door.

A dramatic red velvetcake will be warmly wel-comed as a kind treat foryour hosts and their fami-ly to enjoy while they pre-pare for their party. Andthey’ll anticipate yourvisit all the more as theyenjoy the fruits of yourthoughtfulness.

• Teach children thejoys of giving. Involvechildren in your holidaygift-giving preparations, from writing the shoppinglist to wrapping and pre-senting presents.

Encourage them toremember by name thosewho deserve specialthanks at the holidays, from neighbors and babysitters to grandparentsand teachers.
