Throughout sports at the ama-teur levels, there have been a few father-son tandems in the coaching ranks. They appear to be rarer as one moves closer to the profes-sional level, but even the pros have had a father and a son on the same coaching staff in various sports.

The Christian Life boys junior varsity basketball team has such a bloodline duo. Coach Jim Svehla is a veteran in the program who has also worked as a varsity assistant. He’s also in his second season of heading up the junior varsity boys program. His son, Nick Svehla, who graduated from CLS in 2010 and is not far re-moved from the program as a player, has joined forces with his father. Nick is a ju-nior varsity assistant coach and the head boys fresh-man coach.

“We are able to sepa-rate it,” said Jim when asked if he can keep family and

basketball separate. “But we still talk a lot of basketball at home. I’d say a good 30 to 45 minutes a day.”

Nick was at Trinity International in Deerfield, Ill., for a semester and now studies at Journey College, housed at First Assembly of God church in Kenosha. With Nick still under his roof, conversations at home tend to steer toward CLS now that the basketball season is well under way. Nick played on the Eagle varsity squad for three seasons, all of which saw his dad on the bench as an assistant coach.

“He sees a lot of things I don’t because he has played in the sys-tem recently,” said Jim of Nick. “He loves to teach the boys and spent a

lot of time in the summer working with the players individually.”

Christian Life just happened to need a freshman coach, so Nick was an obvious fit. Once asked, he accepted the position while juggling his college studies. Just like before, he is learning under his father, only this time not as a player, but as a coach.

“I see myself, in the future, becoming a head coach,” said Nick. “I like teaching basketball and good life skills ever since I played. I love the game and this helps keep me into it. It’s just an added blessing having my dad there. We get along great and have similar personali-ties.”

Eagles flock around their coaches.

Father-son coaching tandem preparing CLS junior varsity cagers

The freshman and junior varsity programs at CLS are a training vessel for the varsity team. It is at these levels where players hone their skills in preparation for play-ing at the school’s highest level. It’s also where coaches gain valuable experience on their way to the varsity ranks.

“I ap-preciate his comments about what is going on with the program and I think he appreciates mine,” said Jim.

Nick echoes his father’s state-ment.

“It was an easy transition to coaching, being under him,” said Nick of his dad. “As far as coaching the freshman team, he gives me

pointers here and there. It’s a little different perspective than playing, and now we are both coaches.”

Both Jim and Nick are taking full advantage of the situation. The real winners, however, are those who

are coming through the ranks of the Christian Life boys basket-ball program.

“The whole father-son thing is re-ally special,” summed up Nick. “It doesn’t come around too often.”
