en un césped, de manera que si escapasde uno no significa que estésnecesariamente seguro;

¡No quierohibernar
entre paredes, entre salones! ¡Quiero

soy Lord Byron soy Percy Shelley soy

rojo sobre su corazón. Por eso vivimosmil años;
gran mar azul, tan brillante, tan profundo y tan distinto a nosotros;
y vamos a caminar
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
19/110
vamos a caminar
Te conozco esta noche
como si nunca hubiese conocido
un libro de piedras blancas
ni una estantería de crujidos anaranjados
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
20/110
vamos a caminar
hacia el río
(hasta eso puedo hacer
esta noche) donde
si te besara por favor
recuerda que sin zapatos
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
21/110
eres tan hermosa como
un paraguas que abierto es naranja
y blanco tal vez nunca

8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
26/110
¿No tenés historia
de modo que si te escapás del primero nonecesariamente estás a salvo;
esos dobles ocultos, o a veces parecidos.
buscá a Tristram Shandy, a ver

o alguien
temporariamente perturbado
con la cabeza "flotando" de algún modo
alejándose de sus asuntos más
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
37/110
íntimos y profundos hacia
cosas más "irreales"...
Un momento serio para la isla
es cuando los árboles
empiezan a darle sombra, y
sabemos
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
41/110
si alguna vez vamos a volver a estar
cerca. Serio el reconocimiento
de la probabilidad
de que así sea, aunque el tiempo
se estire terriblemente
en el medio...

PERMANENTEMENTE

Patrizia no quiere
hablar de amor dice que nada más
quiere hacer
el amor pero me habla
de eso casi sin parar.
Es horrible es
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
50/110
lo peor de la vida
dice Patrizia
nada
ni la muerte ni la enfermedad
son tan malos como el amor
siempre estoy enamorada siempre estoy
sufriendo por amor
dice Patrizia. Ya
me acostumbré pero igual sufro
¿sabés lo que le hice
una vez? – hablando
a veces. Pero el amor es horrible. Creí
que eras la persona
ideal para hablar Patrizia porque
te encantan las mujeres y además
sos mujer. Puede ser que tengas razóndijo
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
52/110
Patrizia.
quitado. Patrizia
se ríe. No gracias a dios todavía no mepasó
que me guste una mujer tan joven
¿Por qué? Cuando se tiene mi
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
53/110
edad – joven todavía—ella
tiene treinta y...¿nueve? se está lo
bastante cerca de la gente muy joven
como para saber lo horribles que son
y no se los ama
no se quiere saber
nada con ellos! Oh
uh uuh, dije yo poniendo
y sacando las manos de la mesa
mirate disculpá pero me das risa
sentado en este restaurante
horrible a la una
de la mañana en una
ciudad donde no querés estar
¿y por qué? Por esa mujer.
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
54/110
Es horrible, sí, pero
también es gracioso
ya sé dije. Escuchame tengo
una idea ¿Tenés la dirección? ¿Sabésdónde
vive? Tendrías que ir
y esconderte
en la puerta de la casa
entre los arbustos
después cuando abra
salís
y la encarás. Y vas a ver
si tiene amor
en los ojos o no. Eso no puede
esconderse. Vas a saber no te podésequivocar
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
55/110
funciona a mí siempre
me funcionó. Para mí no va a funcionar. No puedo
Si
esta mujer me hiciera algo así
nada más me caería mal de hecho
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
56/110
la odiaría. A lo mejor querés considerar
dijo Patrizia que esa mujer te hace
esto para probarte. No,
dije. Sé que no. Algo sé. Me siento
un viejo de cien años. Todavía
no se te ve tan mal, dijo Patrizia.
Buscate otra mujer. No puedo. Ya
lo sé dijo Patrizia. Aunque uno siemprepiensa
que es buena idea. Pero
si no podés no podés. Ni
siquiera puedo comer
Patrizia dije.
Perdón dije Patrizia por ser tan
aburrido no puedo parar de hablarPerdoname.
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
57/110
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
58/110
No puedo ir a esconderme Patrizia
Desire for Spring
Calcium days, days when we feed ourbones!
Iron days, which enrich our blood!
Saltwater days, which give us valuableiodine!
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
60/110
When will there be a perfectly ordinaryspring day?
For my heart needs to be fed, not myurine
or my brain, and I wish to leap to Pittsburgh
from Tuskegee, Indiana, if necessary,
spreading like a flower in the spring light, and growing like asilver stair.
Nothing else will satisfy me, not evendeath!
Not even broken life insurance policies, cancer, loss of health,
ruined furniture, prostate disease,headaches, melancholia,
no, not even a ravaging wolf eating upmy flesh!
I want spring, I want to turn like amobile
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
61/110
in a new fresh air! I don't want tohibernate
between walls, between walls! I want tobear
my share of the anguish of beingsuccinctly here!
Not even moths in the spell of the flame
can want it to be warmer so much as Ido!
Not even the pilot slipping into the greatgreen sea
in flames can want less to be turned intoan icicle!
Though admiring the icicle's cunning, how shall I be satisfied
with artificial daisies and roses, and
wax pears? O breeze, my lovely, come in, that Imayn't be stultified!
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
62/110
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
63/110
This is the matter with me and thehammer of my mother and father
Who created me with everything But I lack clam I lack rose
Though I do not lack extreme delicacy ofrose petal
Who is it that I wish to astonish?
In the birdcall I found a reminder of you
But it was thin and brittle and gone inan instant
Has nature set out to be a great
entertainer? Obviously not a great reproducer? Agreat Nothing?
Well I will leave that up to you
I have a knocking woodpecker in myheart and I think I have three souls
One for love one for poetry and one foracting out my insane self
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
64/110
Not insane but boring but perpendicularbut untrue but true
The three rarely sing together take myhand it’s active
The active ingredient in it is a touch
I am Lord Byron I am Percy Shelley Iam Ariosto
I eat the bacon I went down the slide Ihave a thunderstorm in my inside I willnever hate you
But how can this maelstrom beappealing? do you like menageries? my
god
Most people want a man! So here I am
I have a pheasant in my reminders Ihave a goshawk in my clouds
Whatever is it which has led all theseanimals to you?
A resurrection? or maybe aninsurrection? an inspiration?
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
65/110
I have a baby in my landscape and Ihave a wild rat in my secrets from you.
To You
I love you as a sheriff searches for awalnut
That will solve a murder case unsolved for years
Because the murderer left it in the snowbeside a window
Through which he saw her head, connecting with
Her shoulders by a neck, and laid a red
Roof in her heart. For this we live athousand years;
For this we love, and we live because welove, we are not
Inside a bottle, thank goodness! I loveyou as a
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
66/110
Kid searches for a goat; I am crazierthan shirttails
In the wind, when you’re near, a windthat blows from
The big blue sea, so shiny so deep and sounlike us;
I think I am bicycling across an Africa of
green and white fields Always, to be near you, even in my heart
When I’m awake, which swims, and also I believe that you
Are trustworthy as the sidewalk whichleads me to
The place where I again think of you, anew
Harmony of thoughts! I love you as the
sunlight leads the prow Of a ship which sails
From Hartford to Miami, and I love you
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
67/110
Best at dawn, when even before I amawake the sun
Receives me in the questions which youalways pose.
Spring
Let's take a walk
In the city
Till our shoes get wet
(It's been raining All night) and when
We see the traffic
Lights and the moon
Let's take a smile Off the ashcan, let's walk
Into town (I mean
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
68/110
A lemon peel)
Let's make music (I hear the cats
Purply beautiful
Like hallways in summer
Made of snowing rubber Valence piccalilli and diamonds)
Oh see the arch ruby
Of this late March sky
Are you less intelligent Than the pirate of lemons
Let's take a walk
I know you tonight
As I have never known
A book of white stones
Or a bookcase of orange groans
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
69/110
Or symbolism
I think I'm in love
With those imaginary racetracks
Of red traced grey in
The sky and the gimcracks
Of all you know and love
Who once loathed firecrackers
And license plates and
Diamonds but now you love them all
And just for my sake Let's take a walk
Into the river
(I can even do that
Tonight) where If I kiss you please
Remember with your shoes off
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
70/110
You’re so beautiful like
A lifted umbrella orange
And white we may never
Discover the blue over-
Coat maybe never never O blind
With this (love) let’s walk
Into the first
Rivers of morning as you are seen
To be bathed in a light withe light
Come on
PARADISO
There is no way not to be excited
When what you have been disillusionedby raises its head
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
71/110
From its arms and seems to want to talkto you again.
You forget home and family And set off on foot or in your automobile
And go to where you believe this form ofreality
May dwell. Not finding it there, yourefuse
Any further contact
Until you are back again trying to forget
The only thing that moved you (it seems)
and gave what you forever will have But in the form of a disillusion.
Yet often, looking toward the horizon
There—inimical to you? —is thatsomething you have never found
And that, without those who came beforeyou, you could never have imagined.
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
72/110
How could you have thought there wasone person who could make you
Happy and that happiness was not theuneven
Phenomenon you have known it to be?Why do you keep believing in this
Reality so dependent on the time allowed
it That it has less to do with your exile
from the age you are
Than from everything else life promisedthat you could do?
You Were Wearing
You were wearing your Edgar Allan Poe printed cotton blouse.
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
73/110
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
74/110
We waited for a time and then joinedher, only to be served tea in cups paintedwith pictures of Herman Melville
As well as with illustrations from hisbook Moby Dick and from his novella,
Benito Cereno.
Father came in wearing his Dick Tracy
necktie: “How about a drink, everyone? I said, “Let’s go outside a while.” Thenwe went onto the porch and sat on the
Abraham Lincoln swing.
You sat on the eyes, mouth, and beard
part, and I sat on the knees. In the yard across the street we saw asnowman holding a garbage can lidsmashed into a likeness of the mad
English king, George the Third.
Mountain
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
75/110
Nothing's moving I don't see anybody
And I know that it's not a trick
There really is nothing moving there
And there aren't any people. It is thevery utmost top
Where, as is not unusual,
There is snow, lying like the hair on awhite-haired person's head
Combed sideways and backward and forward to cover as much of the top
As possible, for the snow is thinning, it's
September Although a few months from now therewill be a new crop
Probably, though this no one KNOWS(so neither do we)
But every other year it has happened by November
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
76/110
Except for one year that's known about, nineteen twenty-three
When the top was more and moreuncovered until December fifteenth
When finally it snowed and snowed
I love seeing this mountain like a mouse
Attached to the tail of another mouse, and to another and to another
In total mountain silence
There is no way to get up there, and nomeans to stay.
It is uninhabitable. No roads and no possibility
Of roads. You don't have a history
Do you, mountain top? This doesn'tmake you either a mystery
Or a dull person and you're certainly nota truck stop.
No industry can exploit you
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
77/110
No developer can divide you into estatesor lots
No dazzling disquieting woman can tieyour heart in knots.
I could never lead my life on one of thosespots
You leave uncovered up there. No way to
be there But I'm moved.
(sign at a railroad crossing in Kenya)
In a poem, one line may hide anotherline,
As at a crossing, one train may hideanother train.
That is, if you are waiting to cross
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
78/110
The tracks, wait to do it for one momentat
Least after the first train is gone. And sowhen you read
Wait until you have read the next line--
Then it is safe to go on reading.
In a family one sister may concealanother,
So, when you are courting, it's best tohave them all in view
Otherwise in coming to find one youmay love another.
One father or one brother may hide theman,
If you are a woman, whom you havebeen waiting to love.
So always standing in front ofsomething the other
As words stand in front of objects, feelings, and ideas.
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
79/110
One wish may hide another. And one person's reputation may hide
The reputation of another. One dog mayconceal another
On a lawn, so if you escape the first oneyou're not necessarily safe;
One lilac may hide another and then a
lot of lilacs and on the Appia Antica one tomb
May hide a number of other tombs. Inlove, one reproach may hide another,
One small complaint may hide a greatone.
One injustice may hide another--onecolonial may hide another,
One blaring red uniform another, and
another, a whole column. One bath may hide another bath
As when, after bathing, one walks outinto the rain.
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
80/110
One idea may hide another: Life issimple
Hide Life is incredibly complex, as in the prose of Gertrude Stein
One sentence hides another and isanother as well. And in the laboratory
One invention may hide another
invention, One evening may hide another, oneshadow, a nest of shadows.
One dark red, or one blue, or one purple--this is a painting
By someone after Matisse. One waits atthe tracks until they pass,
These hidden doubles or, sometimes, likenesses. One identical twin
May hide the other. And there may beeven more in there! The obstetrician
Gazes at the Valley of the Var. We usedto live there, my wife and I, but
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
81/110
One life hid another life. And now she isgone and I am here.
A vivacious mother hides a gawkydaughter. The daughter hides
Her own vivacious daughter in turn. They are in
A railway station and the daughter is
holding a bag Bigger than her mother's bag andsuccessfully hides it.
In offering to pick up the daughter's bagone finds oneself confronted by
the mother's
And has to carry that one, too. So onehitchhiker
May deliberately hide another and one
cup of coffee Another, too, until one is over-excited.One love may hide another love
or the same love
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
82/110
As when "I love you" suddenly rings false and one discovers
The better love lingering behind, aswhen "I'm full of doubts"
Hides "I'm certain about something andit is that"
And one dream may hide another as is
well known, always, too. In the Garden of Eden
Adam and Eve may hide the real Adamand Eve.
Jerusalem may hide another Jerusalem.
When you come to something, stop to letit pass
So you can see what else is there. Athome, no matter where,
Internal tracks pose dangers, too: onememory
Certainly hides another, that being whatmemory is all about,
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
83/110
The eternal reverse succession ofcontemplated entities. Reading
A Sentimental Journey look around When you have finished, for Tristram
Shandy, to see
If it is standing there, it should be,stronger
And more profound and theretoforehidden as Santa Maria Maggiore
May be hidden by similar churchesinside Rome. One sidewalk
May hide another, as when you're asleepthere, and
One song hide another song; a poundingupstairs
Hide the beating of drums. One friend
may hide another, you sit at the foot of a tree
With one and when you get up to leavethere is another
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
84/110
Whom you'd have preferred to talk to allalong. One teacher,
One doctor, one ecstasy, one illness, onewoman, one man
May hide another. Pause to let the firstone pass.
You think, Now it is safe to cross and you
are hit by the next one. It can be important
To have waited at least a moment to seewhat was already there.
The Boiling Water
A serious moment for the water is
when it boils And though one usually regards it
merely as a convenience
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
85/110
To have the boiling water
available for bath or table
Occasionally there is someone
around who understands
The importance of this moment
for the water—maybe a saint,
Maybe a poet, maybe a crazy
man, or just someone
temporarily disturbed
With his mind 'floating'in a
sense, away from his deepest Personal concerns to more
'unreal' things...
A serious moment for the island is when its trees
Begin to give it shade, and
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
86/110
another is when the ocean
washes
Big heavy things against its side.
One walks around and looks at
the island
But not really at it, at what is on
it, and one thinks,
It must be serious, even, to be this
island, at all, here.
Since it is lying here exposed to
the whole sea. All its Moments might be serious. It is
serious, in such windy weather,
to be a sail
Or an open window, or a feather flying in the street...
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
87/110
Seriousness, how often I have
thought of seriousness
And how little I have understood
it, except this: serious is urgent
And it has to do with change. You
say to the water,
It's not necessary to boil now,
and you turn it off. It stops
Fidgeting. And starts to cool. You
put your hand in it
And say, The water isn't serious any more. It has the potential,
However—that urgency to give
off bubbles, to
Change itself to steam. And the wind,
When it becomes part of a
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
88/110
hurricane, blowing up the
beach
And the sand dunes can't keep it
away.
Fainting is one sign of
seriousness, crying is another.
Shuddering all over is another
one.
A serious moment for the
telephone is when it rings. And a person answers, it is
Angelica, or is it you.
A serious moment for the fly is
when its wings
Are moving, and a serious
moment for the duck
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
89/110
Is when it swims, when it first
touches water, then spreads
Its smile upon the water...
A serious moment for the match
is when it burst into flame...
Serious for me that I met you, and
serious for you
That you met me, and that we do
not know
If we will ever be close to anyone
again. Serious the recognition
of the probability
That we will, although time
stretches terribly in
between...

Variations On A Theme By William
Carlos Williams
1
I chopped down the house that you hadbeen saving to live in next summer.
I am sorry, but it was morning, and Ihad nothing to do
and its wooden beams were so inviting.
2
We laughed at the hollyhocks together
and then I sprayed them with lye.
Forgive me. I simply do not know what Iam doing.
3
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
91/110
I gave away the money that you hadbeen saving to live on for the
next ten years. The man who asked for it was shabby
and the firm March wind on the porchwas so juicy and cold.
4
Last evening we went dancing and Ibroke your leg.
Forgive me. I was clumsy and
I wanted you here in the wards, where Iam the doctor!
To Various Persons Talked To All
At Once
You have helped hold me together.
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
92/110
I'd like you to be still.
Stop talking or doing anything else for a
minute. No. Please. For three minutes, maybe five minutes.
Tell me which walk to take over the hill.
Is there a bridge there? Will I wantcompany?
Tell me about the old people who builtthe bridge.
What is "the Japanese economy"?
Where did you hide the doctor's bills? How much I admire you!
Can you help me to take this off?
May I help you to
take that off? Are you finished with this item?
Who is the car salesman?
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
93/110
The canopy we had made for the dog.
I need some endless embracing.
The ocean's not really very far.
Did you come west in this weather?
I've been sitting at home with my shoesoff.
You're wearing a cross! That bench, look! Under it are some
puppies!
Could I have just one little shot of Scotch?
I suppose I wanted to impress you.
It's snowing.
The Revlon Man has come from acrossthe sea.
This racket is annoying. We didn't want the baby to come herebecause of the hawk.
What are you reading?
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
94/110
In what style would you like thehumidity to explain?
I care, but not much. You can smoke acigar.
Genuineness isn't a word I'd ever use.
Say, what a short skirt! Do you have acamera?
The moon is a shellfish.
I can't talk to most people. They eat mealive.
Who are you, anyway?
I want to look at you all day long, because you are mine.
Might you crave a little visit to the Pizza Hut?
Thank you for telling me your sign.
I'm filled with joy by this sun!
The turtle is advancing but the lobsterstays behind. Silence has won the game!
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
95/110
Well, just damn you and thethermometer!
I don't want to ask the doctor. I didn't know what you meant when yousaid that to me.
It's getting cold, but I am feeling awfullylazy.
If you want to we can go over there
Where there's a little more light.

Talking to Patrizia
Patrizia doesn't want to
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
100/110
Talk about love she
Says she just
Wants to make
Love but she talks
About it almost endlessly to me.
It is horrible it Is the worst thing in life
Says Patrizia
Nothing
Not death not sickness Is as bad as love
I am always
In love I am always
Suffering from love
Says Patrizia. Now
I am used to it
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
101/110
But I am suffering all the same
Do you know what I did to her Once?--speaking
Of her girlfriend--I kicked her out
I literally kicked her she was down onthe floor and I
Gave her the colpi di piedi the
Kicks of my foot. She slided out.
She did this
To me promised to go on a trip
I am all waiting prepared
Suitcases and tickets
She comes and says her other friend
finds out she Can't go she guessed about it. I KICKEDher out
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
102/110
Oh we are still together
Sometimes. But love is horrible. I
thought You might be the best
Person to talk to Patrizia since you
Love women and are a woman
Yourself. You may be right Patrizia
Said. But this woman who abandons
You I think you should
Disappear. Though maybe with thiswoman
Disappearing won't work.
I think not disappear.
It's too bad I don't know her
If I knew her if I could see her
Just for ten minutes--I'm afraid
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
103/110
If you saw her you might take
Her away from me. Patrizia
Laughs. No it hasn't happened to me
Thank God to like such young women yet
Why? When you are my
Age--still young--she Is thirty . . . nine? you are close enough
To people very young to
Know how horrible they are
And you don't love them
You don't want to have anything
To do with them! Oh
Uh huh, I said putting
My hands down on the table and then off
Look at you excuse me but I have tolaugh
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
104/110
At you sitting in this horrible
Restaurant at one o'clock In the morning in a
City you don't want to be
In and why? For this woman.
It is horrible I know but Also funny
I know I said. Listen I have
An idea. Do you know her address? Youknow where
She lives? You should go there
Go and hide there
Outside her house
In the bushes
Then when she comes out
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
105/110
You jump out
You confront her. You will see
If there is love
In her eyes or not. It can't
Be hidden. You will know It can't bemistaken
This works This has always worked
For me. It won't work for me. I can't
Go and hide there It is true
Patrizia says when there is loveeverything
Works when there isn't nothing does. Love
Is a god These Freudian things I don'tbelieve at all
This god you have to do what
He wants you to you are
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
106/110
Angry but all you really want
Is to get her back. Then--revenge! If
This woman did something like this tome
I would simply dislike her in fact
I would hate her You may want toconsider
Patrizia said that this woman is
Doing this test to you. No, I
Said. I know she's not. I know
something. I feel A hundred years old. Yet
You don't look so bad, Patrizia said.
Find another woman. I can't. I Know Patrizia said. But one alwaysthinks it
Is a good idea. But
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
107/110
If you can't you can't. I
Can't even eat
This food Patrizia I said.
I'm sorry I said Patrizia to be so
Boring I can't stop talking Forgive
Me. It doesn't bore me at all Patrizia says It's my favorite subject
It isn't every day one sees somebody
In such a state you can help him bytalking to stay alive
You know, Patrizia says if she
Does this thing to you now
She will do it again
And again so you'd better be ready
Maybe you can get the advantage
By saying she is right you
8/19/2019 Kenneth Koch
108/110
Don't love her Good bye You leave
However if you want her You should go into the bushes
And surprise her when they see you
It always makes a difference
I can't go hide there Patrizia
That's insane. I went but not
Hiding and not confronting.
Patrizia: What did she say? I said
The same things. Patrizia said
Did you see love in her eyes? I said
No. I didn't. I saw
Something else. In Florence it's rainy
Her (relatively) short hair and
Her eyes along the Arno

The last time I'll ever see her again
As the one I am seeing again
When seeing again still has somemeaning.
It's finished Patrizia's saying
For now but don't worry
I think you will get her back
But it will be too late. Oh Patrizia I
Let my back and head fall against
The chair Late isn't anything!
