What is a Sample ? Is there a Standard Operating Procedure
(SOP) or Protocol for Sampling? When is an SOP needed for on farm
sampling ? “Nontraditional” sampling Sampling for Drug Residue Testing Why is sample collection part of Drug
Residue testing … ???? What is emphasized and why
Overview

SOP: A set of fixed instructions or steps for carrying out usually routine operations
Protocol: Rules of conduct, behavior in certain situation.
Your sampling procedure often can be unique to your operation.
Certain types of sampling require a posted SOP / Protocol.
Standard Operating Procedure

“Direct load” Milk directly from cow to truck. “Indirect Loading” Milk to a bulk tank then to a
parked truck. Plant Wall Tank or Silo with plunger type sampling
device in side wall or door A “QMI” device and septum in the door of a milk
tank or truck. A sampler septum on back of a milk truck Robotic milker “AMI” Generally any Nontraditional method
• Note: Traditional Bulk Tank sampling does not require a posted SOP.
When is a SOP Required

Nontraditional sampling involves any situation that isn’t commonly done.
Why discuss our view of Nontraditional ?
Sampling we’ll consider Nontraditional.• Milk Cans• Totes of milk• Bag in a box• Partial drop offs from a Bulk Truck• Partial pick-ups of milk in other than a bulk tank truck• Frozen milk• Your examples

• Discuss the equipment you’ll use, your record keeping and sample handling plan with your DPS
Take the written and practical exams.
Sampling for Drug Residue Testing
10
What you plan on testing; sheep - bulk tank?
What will effect your sample and subsequently your test results• Agitation & Temperature• Contamination
Dirty dipper hands or vials, improper technique etc • Post sampling, sample handling• Handling in the laboratory
NF done first• Immediate – Without delay – Prior to
As with entire Drug Residue Testing program
What to Emphasize in Sampling
11
The collection procedure• Consistency is key; set yourself up to be successful
Documentation• Doing certified work in an accredited lab, if you can’t
read it … it didn’t happen• Start well, provide adequate space so paper work is
easily accessed and thereby easy to use. Again Set Up For Success
Sample equipment• Clean dipper … rinse-wash-rinse store to dry• Sample containers in clean covered container • Sanitizer and test equipment
What to Emphasize in Sampling
14
Entire program is based on proper sampling• You don’t test your milk … you test your sample
Set up for success by having an easily understood plan and space to work.
Dedicate space so it is simple to keep records, take samples, test sample, maintain records etc.
Good preparation saves you the only thing you can’t buy … ?
This is not difficult, it’s just a procedure.
