Before assembling vacuum cleaner, checkthe PACKING LIST (page 2). Use this listto verify that you have received all thecomponents of your new Kenmorevacuum cleaner.

Insert telescoping wand into PowerMate®

until the wand button snaps into place. Anoticeable “click” should be heard.

To remove: Press wand quick releasepedal and pull telescoping wand out ofPowerMate®.

HANDLE

Insert handle into telescoping wand untillock button snaps in place. Be sure hose isnot twisted.

To remove: Press handle quick releasebutton and pull up on handle.

To store: Disconnect hose fromtelescoping wand and canister to preventstress on hose during storage. Store hosein a loosely coiled position so the hosecovering is not stressed.

Align the hose latch tab and notch incanister hood and insert hose intocanister until it snaps in place.

To remove: Press hose latchtab inward andpull out on hose.

Install the crevice tool and dusting brushinto the caddy as shown.

Press the caddy onto the telescopingwand and snap the caddy into place.

1. Pull cord out of canister to desired length.The cord will not rewind until the cordrewind button is pushed.

2. Plug the polarized power cord into a 120Volt outlet located ne���������r.

NOTE: To reduce the risk of electric shock,this vacuum cleaner has a polarized plug;one blade is wider than the other. This plug"��������������#ed outlet only one way. If������� ����������������������t, re-v�������������$������� ��������t, contact�������ed electrician to install the properoutlet. Do not change the plug in any way.

To rewind: Unplug the vacuum cleaner. Holdthe plug while rewinding to prevent damageor injury from the moving cord. Push cordrewind button.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

CAUTIONMoving parts! To reduce the risk of personal injury, DONOT touch the agitator when vacuum cleaner is on.Contacting the agitator while it is rotating can cut,bruise or cause other injuries. Always turn � andunplug from electrical outlet before servicing.

Use caution when operating near children.

• DO NOT use outlets above counters.Damage from cord to items in sur-rounding area could occur.

• When any abnormality/failure occurs,stop using the product immediatelyand disconnect the power plug.

3. Lower handle from upright position bypressing on the handle release pedal.

4. Select a pile height setting by pressingthe small pedal on the rear of thePowerMate®. The pile height setting showson the indicator.

SUGGESTED PILE HEIGHT SETTINGS:For best deep down cleaning, use the XLO setting. However, you may need to raise theheight to make some jobs easier, such as scatter rugs and some deep pile carpets, and to prevent the vacuum cleaner fromshutting o�. Suggested settings are:HI – Shag, deep pile, super-soft or ultra-plush carpets, and scatter rugs.MED – Medium to deep pile.LO – Low to medium pile.XLO – The preferred setting for many carpets ������������� ���������������������

Attention: Refer to your carpet manufacturers cleaning recommendations. Some more delicate carpets may requirethat they be vacuumed with the PowerMate®agitator ���� ���������%��������� �������

VACUUMING TIPS

Suggested sweeping pattern.

For best cleaning action, the PowerMate®

should be pushed straight away from youand pulled straight back. At the end ofeach pull stroke, the direction of thePowerMate® should be changed to point intothe next section to be cleaned. This patternshould be continued across the carpet withslow, gliding motions.

NOTE: Fast,jerky strokesdo not providecompletecleaning.

The hose swivelallows the hose toturn without movingthe canister. This ishelpful for cleaningin small areas.

Check hose for twisting before pullingcanister.

THERMAL PROTECTOR

This vacuum cleaner has a thermalprotector which automatically trips toprotect the vacuum cleaner fromoverheating. If a clog prevents the normal�ow of air to the motor, the thermalprote�������������������automatically. This allows the motor tocool in order to prevent possible damageto the vacuum cleaner.

To correct problem: Turn the vacuumcleaner�����'���#!�*��he power cordfrom the outlet to allow the vacuumcleaner to cool and the thermal protectorto reset. Check for and remove clogs, ifnecessary. Also check and replace anyclogged �lters. Wait approximate!���+ty(50) minutes and plug the vacuumcleaner in and turn back on to see if themotor protector has reset.

MOTOR PROTECTOR

This vacuum cleaneralso has a motorprotector by-passvalve which preventsmotor overheatingand damage. Thevalve opens toprovide cooling airwhen a clog prevents�����������ow to thevacuum cleaner suction motor. You willnotice a change of sound as air rushesthrough the valve opening.

To correct problem: Empty the dust cup andclean the primar�������� ��r�<��r. Checkfor and remove clogs, and empty dust cup ifnecessary. See REMOVING CLOGS (page 16).

NOTE: Do not block motor protector.NOTE: The motor protector may open whenusing attachments or when cleaning newcarpet due to reduce'����<ow caused bythe attachments themselves or by newcarpet.

2. To clean exterior, or to reduce static elec-tricity and dust build-up, wipe outer surfacewith a clean, soft cloth that has beendipped in a solution of mild liquid detergentand water, then wrung dry. Wipe dry aftercleaning.

TO CHECK FOR CLOGS:

· Check dust cup and empty if full. SeeEMPTYING DUST CUP (page 17).

· Check pr�<��r, primary ��� andexhaust ��� and clean/replace if dirty.See PRE-FILTER CLEANING (page 18),PRIMARY FILTER CLEANING (page 19)and EXHAUST FILTER CHANGING(page 20).

· Check PowerMate® for any dirt or debrisin the belt path area or in the agitatorarea. Carefully remove any string ordebris located on the agitator or endcaps. See “TO CLEAN AGITATOR” inBELT CHANGING AND AGITATORCLEANING (pages 21-22).

If the vacuum cleaner still has poorsuction, do the following:

1. Connect the hose to the canister andturn vacuum cleaner on. Check the endof the hose for suction. If there is goodsuction on the hose handle, there is noclog in the hose. If the suction is bad,remove any dirt or debris in the hoseand handle.

2. Connect hose handle to wand. Checkthe end of the wand for suction. Ifthere is good suction at the end of thewand, there is no clog in the wand. Ifthe suction is bad, remove any dirt ordebris in the wand.

3. Check PowerMate® swivel. Remove anydirt or debris.

The vacuum cleaner creates suction that picks up dirt. Rapidly moving air carries the dirt tothe dust cup thr������������ow passages. The dust Cup lets the air pass through, while ittraps the dirt.

For best cleaning results, keep the ����ow passage open. Check the starred areas occasionally for clogs. T��������� �������vacuum cleaner from outlet before checking.

TO REMOVE DUST CUP

1. T��������� �������vacuum cleaner.

2. Lift dust cup handle located at the topof the dust cup.

3. Pull the handle up and lift dust cup upand out of the vacuum cleaner.

4. Remove any clogs that might belocated in the suction por����������rtarea.

TO EMPTY DUST CUP

1. Rotate dustcup handle tothe verticalposition.

2. Hold dust cupover a trashcontainer.

3. Press the dustcup latch slightlyoutwards anddownward torelease the door.

The door will swing open and the debriswill fall into the trash container.

4. Shake the dust cup to release anydebris that might hang in the pr�<��r.

5. After the dust cupis empty of debris,������������� ��r.Make sure you heara “click” sound toindicate that thedoor is fully latched.

TO REPLACE DUST CUP

1. Place dust cupback into vacuumcleaner by inserting�������������� tilting back with thedust cup handleraised.

1. Apague y des co necte la aspiradora.

2. Levante el cerrojo del canasto debasura.

3. Saque el contenedor de polvotomando la manija ubicada en la partesuperior del contenedor de Polvo.

4. Saque cualquier obstáculo quepudiera estar ubicado a la entrada desucción o la entrada del �ro.

PARA VACIAR EL CONTENEDORDE POLVO

1. Gire el mangodel contenedorde basura a laposición vertical.

2. Coloque elcontenedor debasura sobre unrecipiente de basura.

3. Presione elpestillo delcontenedor debasuraligeramente haciaafuera y haciaabajo para liberarla puerta.

La puerta se abrirá y la basura caerá enel recipiente de basura.

4. Sacuda el contenedor del polvo parasoltar cualquier desecho que puedacolgar en el pr�<�ro.

5. Después de vaciar elcontenedor de polvo,cierre la puerta�����������]�egúresede oír un “clic” estoindica que la puertaesta completamentecerrada.

1. Coloque laPowerMate®con laparte inferior haciaarriba.

3. Coloque la PowerMate®en la posiciónvertical. Apriete el pedal del mango deliberación y baje la articulación giratoria.Levante los pestillos laterales y traseros.

5. Levante el agitador y quite la correagastada.
