This warranty is for one year from the date of purchase, and includes only private householdvacuum cleaner use. During the warranty year, when this vacuum cleaner is operated andmaintained according to the owner's manual instructions, Sears will repair any defects inmaterial or workmanship free of charge.

This warranty excludes vacuum bags, belts, light bulbs, and filters, which are expendable partsand become worn during normal use.

Do not use the cleaner to pick up sharphard objects, small toys, pins, paperclips, etc. They may damage the cleaneror dust bag.

Do not pick up anything that is burning orsmoking, such as cigarettes, matches, orhot ashes.

Do not use cleaner to pick up flammableor combustible liquids (gasoline, cleaningfluids, perfumes, etc.), or use in areaswhere they may be present. The fumesfrom these substances can create a firehazard or explosion.

Remove the screw located just below thetop edge of the back of the vacuum

Position the handle as shown in the illustra-tion below.

Slide the handle into the opening at the topof the vacuum.

Begin to tighten the screw with your fingersIt may be necessary to adjust the handleslightly.

CORD ASSEMBLYMake sure the quick release upper cordhook is in the upright position. Remove thewire tie from the power cord.

Lock the cord intoplace by forcing itinto the lockingnotch on the bodyof the quickrelease upper cordhook as shown.This helps keepthe power cord outfrom under the Powervacuum cleaneragitator.

Wrap the power cord around the upper andlower cord hooks and lock the power cordplug onto the power cord.

HOW TO START1. Turn the

2. Release the power cord plug from thepower cord and pull the cord off the quickrelease upper cord hook. Check to be surethe power cord is still locked into the lock inthe quick release upper cord hook.

3. Check to see if the cleaner has baginstalled. See DUST BAG CHANGING.

Note: To reduce the risk of electric shock,this vacuum cleaner has a polarized plug,one blade is wider than the

other. This plug will fit in a polarized outletonly one way. If the plug does not fit fully inthe outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does notfit, contact a qualified technician to installthe proper outlet. Do not change the plug inany way.

4. Plug the polarized power cord into a 120Volt outlet located near the floor.

To start the vacuum cleaner, slide theOn/Off switch from the OFF position to theON position. To stop the vacuum cleaner,slide the On/Off switch to the OFF position.

Note: This switch operates the suctionmotor only. For the agitator to rotate, theagitator On/Off selector must be in the ONposition and the handle must be releasedfrom the upright position.

To select a pile height setting:Turn off cleaner. Select a pile height settingby tilting the cleaner back until front wheelsare lifted slightly off the floor.

Slide the adjustment lever to the correct set-ling.

There are four (4) pile height settings on thevacuum. Use the LOW setting for most car-pets and bare floor cleaning (with agitatorOFF), and the HIGH setting for very longpile carpets like shag carpet, scatter rugs,etc. Use the other settings as needed forcarpet heights in-between.

OFF Position: Step on the back half of thepedal to turn off the agitator for use on barefloors.

In the OFF position, the agitator does notrotate. This setting should be used forcleaning hardwood and tile floors.

Note: The light will remain on when vacu-uming with the agitator in the OFF Position,provided the vacuum is not fully upright.

ON Position: Step on the front half of thepedal to turn on the agitator for use on car-peting,

In the ON position, the agitator will turn.When carpets are being cleaned the selec-tor should be in this position.

Attention: Refer to your carpet manufactur-ers cleaning recommendations. Some moredelicate carpets may require that they bevacuumed with the agitator turned off, toprevent carpet damage.

TO USE ATTACHMENTS:Remove the lower end of the stretch hosefrom the cleaner by grasping the hose col-lar, twisting and pulling straight out. Theattachments can now be added to the hose.

Note: The agitator will not rotate if the hosehas been removed from the nozzle.

When using attachments for cleaningdraperies, small rugs with low pile and otherdelicate items, twist the suction control slideto the open position. This lever is located onthe telescoping wand, close to the hose.

This will reduce suction for ease of cleaning.

FLOOR BRUSH AND WAND:SOME MODELSSome models have an extra brush and wandfor cleaning bare floors. Twist one end of theadaptor into the floor brush and the otherend into the straight wand. Connect thestraight wand to the telescopic wand andthen to the vacuum hose or extension hose.

When usingthe regular hose or withthe extensionhose attached, thecleaner should be on a solid surfaceon the same level or below the level ofthe user's feet. DO NOT use the hoseswhen the cleaner is above the level ofthe user's feet.

MotorProtector

Note: Do not block motor protector.

Thermal ProtectorThis vacuum has a thermal protector whichautomatically trips to protect the vacuumfrom overheating. If a clog prevents thenormal flow of air to the motor, the thermalprotector turns the motor off automatically toallow the motor to cool in order to preventpossible damage to the vacuum. During thistime the headlight remains on.

To correct problem: If this occurs, turn thevacuum off and unplug the power cord fromthe outlet to allow the vacuum to cool andthe thermal protector to reset. Check forand remove clogs, if necessary, Also checkand replace any clogged filters. Waitapproximately thirty (30) minutes and plugthe vacuum in and turn back on to see if themotor protector has reset. The motorprotector will not reset if the vacuum is notturned off even if the vacuum has cooleddown.

AGITATOR OVERLOADPROTECTOR

The agitator hasbuilt-in protectionagainst motordamage should theagitator jam. If theagitator slows downor stops, the agitatoroverload protectorshuts off the agitator.The suction motorwil) continue to run.

To correct problem: Turn off and unplugvacuum, remove obstruction, then pressreset butlon.To reset: Push in the agitator overloadprotector button.

PERFORMANCE INDICATORSOME MODELS

When the unit is running with normal airflow, the light on the performance indicator isoff. The light comes on whenever the airflowbecomes blocked. If that occurs, check thedisposable dust bag, motor safety filter andother possible c_og _ocations shown inCLOG REMOVAL.

DIRT SENSORSOME MODELS

The electronic dirt sensor is a feature whichwill detect particles as they pass through thevacuum cleaner.

The dirt sensor indicators and sensorsensitivity switch are located on the front ofthe switch cover.

A red light indicates dirt is being picked upby the cleaner. A green light indicates mostof the dirt has been picked up by thecleaner.

OPERATION

As you vacuum, the red indicator light willcome on and stay on as long as the sensordetects a high concentration of particlespassing through the cleaner.

The green light indicates that most of thecleaning is complete.

The sensor switch allows you to select thesensitivity of the dirt sensor. The switch canbe set to HI (+) or LO (-) sensitivity.Set the sensor switch to the HI (+) positionwhen:

Cleaning bare floors. Cleaning carpet with low pile height.

Set the sensor switch to the LO (-) positionwhen:

Cleaning heavily soiled areas. Cleaning carpet with deep pile. Cleaning new carpets.

Even with the sensor switch in the LO (-)position, the dirt sensor will detect carpetfuzz, especially on new carpet, which maycause the red light to remain on longer thanexpected.

TO CLEAN DIRT SENSOR OPTICSThe dirt sensor optics consist of two opticcells located inside the bag holder.Occasionally, it may become necessary toclean the two optic cells to assuremaximum performance. It isrecommended the optic cells be cleaned:

When the red light stays oncontinuously.

When the green light stays oncontinuously.

When dirt or dust adheres to theoptic cells.

Whenever the dust bag is changed.

To clean the sensor, wipe the optic cells witha soft, dry cloth. Never use cleaners orliquids as they can help speed the recoatingof the optic cells and make it necessary toclean them much sooner than normal. Thedirt sensor area can be reached byremoving the dust cover and the dust bag.

Clean exterior using a clean, soft cloth thathas been dipped in a solution of mild liquiddetergent and water, then wrung dry. Wipedry after cleaning.To reduce static electricity and dust build-up, wipe outer surface of cleaner andattachments.

Wash attachments in warm soapy water,rinse and air dry. Do not clean in dishwash-er.

CAUTIONDo not use attachments if they arewet. Attachments used In dirty areas,such as under a refrigerator, shouldnot be used on other sudaces untilthey are washed. They could leavemarks.
