The project aimed to provide a central base for the school’s growing group of sixth form students. We were also asked to provide these older students with a more visible identity to the rest of the community both inside and outside the school. The school’s site is very tight, with no sports field, so temporary buildings had to be taken down to make way for the new sixth form building – but it added significantly to the capacity of the school. Some 50 additional places were made available following completion of the project. The new facilities at Kendrick include a new library, study room and common room, classrooms, meeting rooms and an office. The new building itself is located at the front of the site to generate interest among the wider community. The constrained nature of the site meant a prefabricated cross laminate timber structure was most suitable. These highly sustainable and cost-effective materials ensured the building received a BREEAM (sustainability) rating of ‘very good’. The exterior render finish was influenced by the rendered buildings in the adjacent conservation area, to ensure the new building would fit in with its surroundings. The school is delighted with the building and new rooms are in continuous use. The building’s presence on the street raises the profile of the school in the surrounding community – especially the large windows which show the school in operation, giving new life to the street. Overall we are extremely happy with our new 6th form block; it is large, impressive and makes a positive statement about the school. The students enjoy its airy, light and spacious design. The Library is super and has been additionally enhanced with students across all years working together. The terrace on the top floor was an inspirational piece of design which has given the 6th form students an even greater sense of privilege and status! Headteacher, Kendrick Sixth Form Key Benefits • Additional accommodation for an expanding school population. • Prefabricated cross laminated timber panel contraction used for speed and sustainability. • Shorter build program saved money. • Stainless steel rain screen cladding to give a smart robus finish.
