Prof. Dr. Heinz-Walter GroßeSAFRI-Chairman

The Sub-Saharan Africa Initiative of German Business (SAFRI) is proud to host the third edition of the German-African Business Sum-mit (GABS) 2019 in Accra. The thriving capital city of Ghana pro-vides a perfect setting for deepening business partnerships between Sub-Saharan Africa and Germany. We are very grateful to our Gha-naian partners and friends for their cooperation and hospitality.

Since the last GABS in Nairobi 2017, Sub-Saharan African countries are again dominating the list of the world's fastest-growing econo-mies. Political and economic integration is also progressing as Afri-ca’s commitment to the Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA) shows. The German Government on the other side develops a wide range of policies to support business driven partnerships for sustainable development and continues to put Africa high on the agenda in Ger-many, the European Union and within the G20 context.

To develop Africa's markets now is an imperative for growth-ori-ented German companies. Our businesses are doing so by building long-term relationships aiming at economic diversification and value addition. To achieve this, we offer reliable partnerships, not only for investing in technology, but even more so for developing people – to grow together.

With the German-African Business Summit, SAFRI, a joint initiative of the German-African Business Association (Afrika-Verein), the As-sociation of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK), the Federation of German Industries (BDI) and the German Feder-ation of Wholesale and Foreign Trade (BGA), offers a platform for decision-makers from business and politics from Sub-Saharan Africa and Germany to exchange views and experiences, explore business opportunities and to establish or deepen personal contacts. I do hope that by doing so we build robust and successful African-German business relations for joint success.

After launching the German-African Business Summit (GABS) in Ber-lin in 2015, the African debut in Nairobi in 2017 was an outstanding success. I therefore applaud our partners from the Sub-Saharan Af-rica Initiative of German Business for their excellent choice of Accra as the venue for the third edition of the GABS.

The German government and German businesses share the convic-tion that our future prosperity critically depends on the sustainable development of our neighboring continent. We are therefore equally committed to building and maintaining mutually beneficial relation-ships with our African partners on the basis of mutual confidence.

Since we introduced our proposal for a Marshall Plan with Africa at the GABS 2017 in Nairobi, global crises have not diminished. Yet, amidst growing uncertainty at the global level, many African coun-tries have shown reassuring reform zeal and impressive sustained growth. Our esteemed host country and reform partner Ghana, for example, is persistently pushing forward its "Ghana beyond Aid" agenda, promoting domestic resource mobilization and private sec-tor development, and fighting corruption. Ghana ranked amongst the three most dynamic African economies in 2017 at a growth rate of 8.5 percent.

The German government will contribute significantly to fostering business partnerships between Germany and African partner coun-tries. We have therefore created an investment fund of one billion euros to mitigate the risks for German companies that invest in Africa and help African small and medium-sized enterprises to grow.

I am convinced that the GABS 2019 will be an outstanding opportu-nity to jointly develop solutions for existing challenges and establish sustainable business ties for the years to come.

Dr. Gerd Müller Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development

This is now the third German-African Business Summit. This is the second time the Summit is taking place in Africa. All of this means that the Sub-Saharan Africa Initiative of German Business really has created an outstanding tradition. I would like to thank both the Initiative and the associations supporting it – the German-African Business Association, the Federation of German Industries, the Fed-eration of German Wholesale, Foreign Trade and Services, and the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce. My thanks also go to the many companies that have contributed to the success of this event in many different ways. This also goes for our Ghanaian partners who are providing us with their wonderful hos-pitality. The success of this summit would not be possible without the impressive level of dedication and outstanding cooperation of all who have been involved.

Sub-Saharan Africa is undergoing rapid change and offers diverse opportunities for companies. Many economies in Sub-Saharan Afri-ca are growing dynamically. And indeed many countries are working hard to diversify their economies. In this process of transformation, German companies make for outstanding partners. They offer long-term involvement in the country and invest not only in technologies, but also in the local communities. The Federal Government seeks to provide targeted support for this work and has announced the launch of a package of development investment. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy has installed a Task Force which is de-veloping an Africa Business Network. The goal is to use a range of innovative support instruments to help companies.

The German-African Business Summit will create a broad overview of current developments, long-term trends and specific opportunities and risks within individual markets. The Summit will also provide a fantastic opportunity to keep up existing business contacts and net-work with new partners. Through the activities of its Africa Business Network, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy is working to enable all of these actors to work together closely. I am therefore looking forward to engaging in dialogue with you.

I wish us all a successful summit, interesting talks and, not least, successful projects.

Thomas BareißParliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy

The Africa Code Week event in 2018 exceeded all expectations by empowering 2.3 million young people across 37 countries with digital literacy and coding skills, compared to 1.3 million who were engaged across 35 African countries in the previous year’s event.

Launched in 2015 by SAP’s Corporate Social Responsibility EMEA department, Africa Code Week is an award-winning initiative that takes place in October of each year.

Strong partnerships with the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, 28 African governments, and over 130 implementing partners and 120 ambas-sadors across the continent are the driving force behind the initiative. Their ambitious goal is to build digital literacy and coding skills in communities across the entire continent, thereby driving sus-tainable learning to help bridge the digital and gender skills gap in Africa.

According to Alexandra van der Ploeg, head of Global Corporate Social Responsibility at SAP, “Fostering powerful partnerships with a sharp focus on capacity building is one of the strengths of Africa Code Week and a solid cornerstone, as it strives to support not only United Nations Sustain-able Development Goal 4 (‘ensure inclusive and

equitable quality and edu cation and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all’), but also Sustainable Development Goal 17, which aims to strengthen and ‘revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.’ This fourth occurrence of Africa Code Week saw unprecedented collabora - tion from our public- and private-sector stakeholders, as well as from NGOs, to train more teachers and reach more young people than ever before.”

Africa Code Week is an important program among many other initiatives supported by SAP, applying talent, technology, and strategic partnerships to create a long-term, sustainable impact on society.

By driving innovation for and with its global network of customers, partners, employees, and thought leaders, SAP strives to help the world run better and improve people’s lives.

We help policy-makers to translate their objectives into practice –

to make change work. Cooperation with the private sector is an important mandate from the German Government. We see private companies as important partners in resolving the major issues that will shape our common future. We work with the private sector to promote sustainable economic development worldwide. This will only become reality if the companies involved enjoy commercial success.

SAFRI is a joint initiative and umbrella organization of leading business federations – the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK), the Federation of German Industries (BDI), the Federation of German Wholesale, Foreign Trade and Services (BGA) and the German-African Business Association (AV). SAFRI, through its supporting organizations, bundles the economic concerns of German business active in Sub-Saharan Africa. This concerted approach guarantees an effective representation of business interests towards policy-makers and offers a single platform for discussion with partners within Sub-Saharan Africa. The objective of SAFRI is to intensify cooperation with the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa and to foster mutual trade and investment. SAFRI is therefore strengthening the perception of Africa as a continent of opportunities for German business, supporting the dialogue between German and African business and industry and providing a platform of exchange for German and African partners.

The German-African Business Association (AV) looks back on 80 years of experience as a foreign trade association. A competent team of experts provides a first port of call for anyone in business or politics interested in German-African business relations. The AV represents over 500 German companies and institutions with a business interest in Afri-ca. Through its well-established networks, the association promotes exchange between German and African representatives from all areas of industry.

The Federation of German Industries is the umbrella organisation of German industry and industry-related service providers. It speaks on behalf of 39 sector associations and rep-resents over 100,000 large, medium-sized and small enterprises with more than eight million employees. The BDI ensures that industry speaks with one voice vis-à-vis political institutions at national, European and international level.

The Federation of German Wholesale, Foreign Trade and Services (BGA) is the leading or-ganization for the wholesale, foreign trade and service sector in Germany. As an umbrella organization, the BGA represents 120,000 companies with some 1.6 million employees who generate an annual turnover of 1.8 billion euros. The BGA network combines the know-how of 43 sectoral and 26 regional associations.

The Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) is the umbrella organization for 79 Chambers of Commerce and Industry (IHK). 3.6 million companies are statutory members of the IHKs. The IHKs represent businesses of all sizes and across all industries. The DIHK also coordinates the worldwide network of German Chambers Abroad (AHK) with 140 offices in 92 countries. As the official representatives of German Industry the AHKs are the ideal partner for German companies wishing to expand their international business.
