Greetings Kemp Mill Families,
Message from Dr. James
Can you believe it? May is here. Flowers and trees are blooming. Our students continue to grow as they are challenged academically. Thank you for making sure that your son/daughter is in school on-time, everyday …. well-rested and prepared to actively participate in the teaching and learning process. The PARCC assessment (Partner for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers will be administered to students beginning May 2, 2017. Students will continue to be assessed throughout May. Please encourage your third, fourth, and/or fifth grader to take his/her time on each section of PARCC.
We look forward to great month here at Kemp Mill. Together we can!!

¿Puede creerlo? Mayo está aquí. Las flores y los árboles están floreciendo. Nuestros estudiantes continúan creciendo a medida que son retados académicamente. Gracias por asegurarse de que su hijo(a) esté en la escuela a tiempo, todos los días.... bien descansado y preparado para participar activamente en el proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje. La evaluación de PARCC será administrada a los estudiantes a partir del 2 de Mayo, 2017. Los estudiantes continuarán evaluándose durante el mes de Mayo. Por favor anime a sus hijos del tercer, cuarto y/o quinto grado a que tomen su tiempo en cada sección de PARCC. Esperamos que sea un gran mes aquí en Kemp Mill. ¡¡Juntos podemos!!

WHAT WILL STUDENTS
3rd In math we are working on solving
two step word problems. We are
using the known information to
solve for the unknown. We are also
creating our own word problems to
solve with partners. We will be
reviewing time and learning about
elapsed time.
In writing we are researching for
our pros and cons project. We are
examining the good and the bad of
a topic and creating an opinion
based on the facts that we find. Ask
us to tell you about the topic that we
are researching and what the pros
and cons are for our topic!
In science we are exploring living
and nonliving things. We are
exploring our school environment
and looking at ways to prove that
something is alive. We will also be
looking at renewable and
nonrenewable resources.

The focus for this month in reading will be evaluating information
in a variety of informational text and determine which claims or
facts to trust. Students will also explore the problem-solution text
structure, write informational poetry, and investigate scientific
vocabulary. In writing, they will use the writing process and the
inquiry approach when writing informative and opinion pieces. In
math, students will use place value strategies to multiply and
divide decimals. In science, students will learn about plant and

Our kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders will be learning how to strike with body parts and short-
handled implements by practicing volleyball, tennis, paddleball, and soccer skills. Our 3rd, 4th,
and 5th graders will be learning how to strike short and long handled implements by practicing
forehand and backhand strokes in tennis, badminton, hockey, along with baseball and la-
crosse. Students will also start designing summer exercise programs so they can continue to lead
an active and healthy lifestyle during the summer months.

In Reading, students will continue to read literary texts and poetry. Students will be able to ask and
answer questions related to characters, setting, plot, vocabulary, how words and phrases help to sup-
ply rhythm and meaning, central message/ moral, and how images help to clarify
their understanding of the text.
In Writing, students will be writing different types of poetry about a topic, and provide details using
images and descriptive words (adjectives, sensory words, thoughts and feelings).
In Math, students will be adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers within 1000; using strategies
for composing and decomposing a ten and a hundred.
In Science, the students will continue to discuss the basic needs of plants and animals, plant
and animal lifecycles, as well as conducting moon observations over time.
In Social Studies, students will discuss the contributions of school, community, and government
leaders, democratic beliefs and attitudes represented by the contributions of people recognized by
holidays, and will learn information about the past from informational texts and biographies, includ-
ing American leaders, innovators, and heroes.

3er En matemáticas estamos trabajando en resolver problemas de dos pasos. Estamos utilizando la información conocida para resolver lo desconocido. También estamos creando nuestros propios problemas de palabras para resolver con compañeros. Estaremos revisando el tiempo y aprendiendo sobre el tiempo transcurrido. En escritura estamos investigando para nuestro proyecto de pros y contras. Estamos examinando lo bueno y lo malo de un tema y crearemos una opinión basada en los hechos que encontramos. Preguntándonos que le informemos sobre el tema que estamos investigando y cuáles son los pros y los contras para nuestro tema! En ciencia estamos explorando cosas vivas y no vivas. Estamos explorando nuestro ambiente escolar y buscando maneras de demostrar que algo está vivo. También estaremos estudiando los recursos renovables y no renovables. Srta. Bontems
5to El objetivo de este mes en lectura será la evaluación de la información en una variedad de texto informativo y determinar qué peticiones o hechos a confiar. Los estudiantes también explorarán la estructura del texto problema-solución, escribirán poesía informativa e investigarán el vocabulario científico. En escritura, utilizarán el proceso de la escritura y el acercamiento de la investigación al escribir pedazos informativos y de opinión. En matemáticas, los estudiantes usarán estrategias de valor de lugar para multiplicar y dividir decimales. En ciencias, los estudiantes aprenderán acerca de las células vegetales y animales. Sra. ¡Nuestros estudiantes de Kindergarten, primero y segundo grado estarán aprendiendo a usar instrumentos cortos de juego y como usar partes del cuerpo en deportes como voleibol, tenis, y fútbol. Nuestros estudiantes del 3er, 4to y 5to grado estarán aprendiendo a usar instrumentos cortos y largos practicando golpes de derecha y de revés en tenis, bádminton, hockey, junto con béisbol y lacrosse. Los estudiantes también empezarán a diseñar programas de ejercicios de verano para que puedan continuar llevando un estilo de vida activo y saludable durante los me-ses de verano. Sr. McCarty

En lectura, los estudiantes seguirán leyendo textos literarios y de poesía. Ellos podrán pre-
guntar y responder a preguntas relacionadas con los personajes, la configuración, el trama,
el vocabulario, cómo las palabras y frases ayudan a suministrar el ritmo y el significado,
mensaje central/moral y cómo las imágenes ayudan a aclarar el entendimiento del texto.
En escritura, los estudiantes escribirán diferentes tipos de poesía sobre un tema, y
proporcionarán detalles usando imágenes y palabras descriptivas (adjetivos, palabras sen-
soriales, pensamientos y sentimientos).
En Matemáticas, los estudiantes van a sumar y restar números de 3 dígitos dentro de 1000;
Utilizando estrategias para componer y descomponer unidades de diez y de cien.
En Ciencia, los estudiantes continuarán discutiendo las necesidades básicas de las plantas y
animales, sus ciclos de vida, así como realizando observaciones lunares con el tiempo.
En Estudios Sociales, los estudiantes discutirán las contribuciones de líderes en las escuelas,
la comunidad y el gobierno, las creencias y actitudes democráticas representadas por las
contribuciones de las personas reconocidas por los días festivos y aprenderán información
sobre el pasado a partir de textos informativos y biografías, incluyendo lideres americanos,

Does your family like to have fun? Of course you do. Join us at school Tuesday, May 2nd for a party with the PTA. We’ll have cake, fun, and crafts. Bring the
whole family. We'll also vote on next year's PTA leadership. Don't worry - volunteering doesn't mean attending tons of meetings and helping with every pro-
gram or event. There are even ways to help from home. See you May 2nd at 6:30 in the evening at school!
May 8th through May 12th is Staff Appreciation Week at Kemp Mill. The PTA has organized an event each day to honor and thank the talented people who teach
our kids every day. We can use your help. Can you donate food for the lunch we’re hosting on the 8th? Can you help during the lunch on the 8th or breakfast
on the 11th? Email Angela at [email protected]. Please be sure to remind your child to say, “thank you” at school that week.

Le gusta divertirse? Por supuesto que sí. Reunase con nosotros en la escuela el Martes 2 de Mayo para una fiesta con el PTA. Tendremos paste-
les, diversión y artesanías. Traiga a toda la familia. También elegiremos por los lideres del PTA del próximo año. No se preocupe ser volunta-
riado no significa asistir a un montón de reuniones y ayudar con cada programa o evento. Hay incluso formas de ayudar desde casa. Nos ve-
mos el 2 de Mayo a las 6:30 de la tarde en la escuela!
Del 8 de Mayo al 12 de Mayo se realizará la Semana de Reconocimiento del Personal de Kemp Mill. El PTA ha organizado un evento cada día
para honrar y agradecer a la gente talentosa que enseñan a nuestros niños todos los días. Podemos utilizar su ayuda. ¿Puede donar comida
para el almuerzo que estamos organizando el día 8? ¿Puede ayudar durante el almuerzo el día 8 o el desayuno el día 11? Envíe un correo elec-
trónico a Angela en [email protected]. Por favor asegúrese de recordarle a su hijo que diga "gracias" en la escuela esa semana.
