INTRODUCTIONThe SU-16 is a semi-automatic rifle chamberedfor the .223 Remington (5.56mm) cartridge. The SU-16 rifle will accept most standard M-16type magazines. The forend can be unfolded toform a bi-pod for more accurate shooting. Thestock has storage space for two 10 round Kel-Tec magazines or one 20 or 30 round maga-zine. By rotating the stock down and forward, the SU-16 rifle can be reduced to a size of27x7.5 inches (680x190mm) to facilitatestorage.

CONSTRUCTIONThe receiver, stock, and forend are made of animpact resistant glass reinforced Zytel. Thereceiver has an aluminum insert molded intothe front to accept the barrel and the serialnumber.

The barrel has a fully adjustable front sight.

The stock houses the firing mechanism andhas storage for two 10 round magazines. It isended with a soft rubber butt plate.

The firing mechanism is of conventional singleaction type. It has a push bolt safety that blocksthe trigger.

FunctioningAt the start of this cycle the weapon isassumed already loaded, full magazineinserted, hammer cocked, the safety disen-gaged and ready to fire.

When The SU-16 rifle’s trigger is pulled, thetrigger block rotates lifting up the rear of thesear. This causes the sear to rotate on its axisdisengaging the sear from the hammer. Thehammer rotates forward to strike the firing pin, which in turn hits the cartridge primer ignitingthe powder charge.

Page 6: KELTEC CNC INDUSTRIES INC - textfiles.compdf.textfiles.com/manuals/FIREARMS/keltec_su16.pdfthe trigger. Functioning At the start of this cycle the weapon is assumed already loaded,

The hot expanding powder gases drive thebullet forward through the barrel. After about.0007 seconds the bullet passes the gas port inthe barrel and some of the powder gases enterthe gas head and press on the piston. Thepressure builds on the piston, which pushes onthe piston rod and the bolt carrier causing thebolt carrier to move backwards, unlocking thebolt from the barrel extension. After the boltcarrier moves about 0.41inches (10.5mm) thebolt is fully unlocked from the barrel extensionand the bolt and empty case continue to movebackwards with the bolt carrier.

On it’s way backwards, the bolt carrier cocksthe hammer and the empty case ejects. Thebolt carrier is gradually slowed down andstopped by the recoil spring. The recoil springthen drives the bolt carrier forward. The topcartridge in the magazine is picked up by thebolt and pushed into the barrel. The bolt stopsmoving once the round is fully inserted in to thechamber but the bolt carrier continues to moveforward until it rests on the barrel extension, thecam path and cam pin cause the bolt to twistand lock with the barrel extension.

Page 7: KELTEC CNC INDUSTRIES INC - textfiles.compdf.textfiles.com/manuals/FIREARMS/keltec_su16.pdfthe trigger. Functioning At the start of this cycle the weapon is assumed already loaded,

The hammer is now resting on the sear which ispushing back onto the rear of the trigger block. As the trigger is released the trigger blockrotates, lowering the rear of the trigger block

which allows the sear to move backwards andrest on the top of the rear of the trigger block. The SU-16 rifle is now ready for the next shot.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

The normal storage condition of the SU-16 rifleis unloaded with the stock folded underneaththe barrel.

Folding and unfolding the rifleTo unfold the rifle remove the assembly pinfrom its spring locked hole in the receiver. Thestock is simply latched onto the barrel withfriction and can be unfolded by simply pulling itapart from the barrel. Fully extend the stockand line up the assembly pin holes. Press inthe assembly pin until it is flush with the outsideof the stock

To fold the rifle simply press out the assemblypin with a small tool or the tip of a cartridge, fold the stock under the barrel, and replace theassembly pin into the spring locked hole in thereceiver.

Extending and folding the bi-podTo extend the bi-pod grip the 2 locking tabs oneach side of the forend with your thumb andmiddle finger. Pull them back until the bi-pod

unlatches and then release the bi-pod. Rotatethe bi-pod forward until it is fully extended. Ifonly one half of the bi-pod opens, squeeze itclosed and try again, being sure to use only twofingers to unlatch the bipod.

To fold up the bi-pod rotate the bi-pod back untilthe locking holes are aligned with the lockingtabs. Squeeze the bi-pod together until bothhalves snap into place. Be careful not to getany part of your hand in between the two halveswhen you snap it shut.

SafetyTo achieve operator safety, combined with easeof handling, the SU-16 rifle’s manual safety, when applied, positively blocks the trigger fromrotating the sear. The safety can be applied atany time, whether the hammer is cocked or not.Only when the red paint on the safety is fullyobscured is the safety engaged.

Obviously the safest condition of the rifle isfolded and unloaded. Also considering

Page 9: KELTEC CNC INDUSTRIES INC - textfiles.compdf.textfiles.com/manuals/FIREARMS/keltec_su16.pdfthe trigger. Functioning At the start of this cycle the weapon is assumed already loaded,

unauthorized operation, other modes of storingor carrying will gradually improve readiness atthe cost of safety.

MalfunctioningProper function of your SU-16 rifle is directlyrelated to maintenance and care, and to theammunition you use. Some of the morecommon types of malfunctions which mayoccur are as follows:

Misfire: A failure to fire or unusual sound uponfiring is always a signal to cease firing andimmediately examine the bore of the firearm. Itis not sufficient to just pull the operating handleback and examine the chamber. You mustremove the magazine, clear the chamber, lockthe bolt open and inspect the bore visually -and with a rod if necessary - to be certain it iscompletely clear of any obstruction. Failure todetect and remove a bore obstruction can resultin serious injury or death to the shooter andbystanders, and damage to the firearm.

WARNING: DO NOT ATTEMPT TOREMOVE A LODGED BULLET OR ANYOTHER OBSTRUCTION BY USING ABLANK CARTRIDGE, OR A CARTRIDGEWITH THE BULLET REMOVED, OR BYANY MEANS OTHER THAN THE USEOF THE PROPER SIZE CLEANING ROD(WITHOUT A TIP OR BRUSH) ANDREASONABLE FORCE APPLIED TOTHE ROD. BE CERTAIN ALL LOOSEPOWDER HAS BEEN REMOVED FROMTHE BORE AND ACTION BEFOREINTRODUCING THE ROD INTO THEBORE.

Failure to Feed: This occurs when a cartridgehas been fed from a magazine but not fullychambered. If this occurs, keep the firearmpointed in a safe direction, remove thatcartridge, operate the bolt manually andcontinue shooting. If necessary, change themagazine. The most common causes are dirt

Page 10: KELTEC CNC INDUSTRIES INC - textfiles.compdf.textfiles.com/manuals/FIREARMS/keltec_su16.pdfthe trigger. Functioning At the start of this cycle the weapon is assumed already loaded,

or foreign objects impeding the magazinefollower. Improperly crimped cartridges areanother cause.

Failure to Eject or Extract: A fired case is notfully extracted from the chamber or ejectedfrom the rifle. Again, keep the firearm pointed ina safe direction, clear the gun by operating thebolt, remove the case and continue. If neces-sary, change the magazine. The most commoncauses are a damaged extractor, ejector orammunition. Improperly loaded or sizedcartridges can cause this also. If any of theabove problems are not solved by cleaning orby use of other brands of ammunition, stopfiring, unload and return the SU-16 rifle to ourservice department.

FiringWith the muzzle pointed in a safe direction andyour finger outside the trigger guard, take aimat a safe target, disengage the safety andsqueeze the trigger until a round is fired.

Release the trigger and you are ready to fireanother round. Upon firing, the bolt movesrearward extracting and ejecting the fired roundand returns to the forward position feedinganother round automatically while doing so.This sequence can be repeated until the lastround has been fired. The SU-16 has anautomatic bolt stop so after the last round isfired the bolt will lock open. Remove the emptymagazine by pressing the magazine catchlocated on the right side of the receiver andpulling out the empty magazine. To continueshooting simply insert a full magazine into themagazine well, firmly push it up until it locks, pull back and release the operating handle torelease the bolt stop and feed the next round, the rifle is now ready to fire.

UnloadingTo unload the SU-16 rifle engage the safety, push in the magazine catch, remove themagazine, and pull the operating handle fully

Page 11: KELTEC CNC INDUSTRIES INC - textfiles.compdf.textfiles.com/manuals/FIREARMS/keltec_su16.pdfthe trigger. Functioning At the start of this cycle the weapon is assumed already loaded,

back to eject the round in the chamber. Do notobstruct the ejector port and keep fingers awayfrom trigger and muzzle. With the operatinghandle fully pulled back push up on the boltstop and slowly release the operating handle, the bolt should stay open. Visually inspect thechamber to make sure it is empty. Pull back onthe operating handle to release the bolt stopand release the operating handle to close thechamber. Push the remaining cartridges in themagazine forward and out.

LoadingTo load, fill the magazine by pressing acartridge downward on the magazine follower(or downward on the previously loadedcartridge). Continue loading until you haveloaded the number of cartridges you wish toload, up to the magazine capacity of 10 rounds.Do not attempt to load your magazine withmore than the specified number of rounds.Doing so can damage the magazine and can

cause a feeding malfunction. Before inserting aloaded magazine always tap the back of themagazine against a hard surface two or threetimes in order to properly seat all the cartridgesto the rear of the magazine.

With the rifle’s safety engaged, hold the rifle inone hand with the muzzle pointing in a safedirection and with your finger off the trigger andoutside the trigger guard. Insert the loadedmagazine into the grip until it is locked in place.Check to assure that the magazine is secure.Pull the operating handle back and release. This strips a round from the magazine andseats it in the barrel chamber.

Page 13: KELTEC CNC INDUSTRIES INC - textfiles.compdf.textfiles.com/manuals/FIREARMS/keltec_su16.pdfthe trigger. Functioning At the start of this cycle the weapon is assumed already loaded,

If you wish to restore the magazine in your rifleto full capacity, press the magazine catch andremove the magazine to load the missinground. Remember to keep the safety engagedand your rifle pointed in a safe direction underall conditions and always keep your finger offthe trigger and outside the trigger guard untilready to fire.

DISASSEMBLY

NOTE: Disassembly can be performed withonly a cartridge but a few simple tools such asa small punch and small pliers can make thingsmuch easier. A Phillips head screw driver is notnecessary for general maintenance and none of

the screws on the rifle should ever need to beremoved for general maintenance.

Rifle disassemblyUnload your SU-16 rifle and cycle the operatinghandle to be sure that there is no round in thechamber. Make sure the bolt is in the forwardposition and the safety is engaged.

CAUTION: some accessories that aremounted to the picatinny rail on the top ofthe receiver may interfere with the disas-sembly of the SU-16 rifle. It is advisable toremove any scopes or other devicesmounted to the rail before proceeding withdisassembly.

Page 14: KELTEC CNC INDUSTRIES INC - textfiles.compdf.textfiles.com/manuals/FIREARMS/keltec_su16.pdfthe trigger. Functioning At the start of this cycle the weapon is assumed already loaded,

With a cartridge or other pointed object pushout and remove the assembly pin. Fold thestock down and forward and press it onto thebarrel. Unlatch the bipod. Grip the recoil springtube, pull it towards the muzzle and twist it ¼turn so that the locking tab points towards thetop of the rifle, it should slide into the receiverabout ¼ inch as you release the recoil springtube. Slowly pull back on the operating handle, the recoil spring tube should also move backand there should not be any spring pressurefelt. Pull the handle all the way back and push itdown into the operating handle removal cutoutin the receiver. The operating handle should

now be able to be pulled straight out of the boltcarrier. After the operating handle is removedthe bolt carrier assembly can now be guidedout of the bottom of the receiver by holding ontothe recoil spring tube.

Bolt carrier disassembly:To remove the bolt, cam pin and firing pinsimply press out the firing pin pin from the rightside with a small tool or a cartridge. Removethe firing pin from the back of the bolt carrier, you may need to tap the bolt carrier or movethe bolt in and out to get the firing pin to fall outenough to grip it. With the firing pin removedthe cam pin can now be pulled out and with thecam pin out the bolt can be removed from thefront of the carrier.

To remove the piston head, recoil spring tube,

spring tube so that the locking tab pointstowards the top of the bolt carrier. Check theoperation of the recoil spring by lightly pullingon the recoil spring tube to compress thespring.

To install the bolt, cam pin, firing pin, and firingpin pin insert the bolt into the front of the boltcarrier. Twist the bolt so that the extractor is onthe right side of the carrier and the cam pinhole in the bolt lines up with the cam pin slot inthe bolt carrier. Insert the cam pin into the holein the bolt, be sure that the tab on the cam pinis pointing straight out the left side of the boltcarrier. Insert the firing pin into the back of thebolt carrier, if it does not go in all the way thecam pin or the bolt may not be insertedcorrectly. Push the bolt assembly into thecarrier as far as it will go and then insert the

firing pin pin into the bolt carrier from the leftside. DO NOT FORCE THE FIRING PIN PIN. Ifit does not go in easily check that the firing pinis installed correctly. Check the operation of thebolt and firing pin to be sure that they movefreely.

Rifle assemblyWith the rifle stock folded and the bipodunlatched rest the rifle on its left side. Take thebolt carrier assembly, pull the bolt out as far asit will go and twist the recoil spring tube so thatthe lock tab is at the top of the bolt carrier.Insert the carrier from the rear of the receiver,be sure not to twist the bolt tube or push in thebolt as you insert it. Align the operating hole inthe carrier with the cut-out in the receiver andinsert the operating handle. Push the carrier upslightly so that the operating handle aligns withthe slot for it and the recoil spring tube isparallel with the barrel of the rifle.

WARNING: if the recoil spring tube is notparallel with the barrel of the rifle the boltcarrier assembly is not installed correctly.Remove the carrier assembly and install itagain paying close attention to the align-ment of the lock tab on the recoil springtube as you insert the carrier and also besure that the bolt itself is always in theforward most position as you insert thecarrier assembly into the receiver.

Check that the forend lock ring is alignedcorrectly and push the operating handle all theway forward, be sure that the piston head linesup and goes into the gas head. Grip the recoilspring tube, pull it forward and twist it ¼ turn sothat the locking tab on the recoil spring tubegoes into the receptacle on the left side of thereceiver. Pull the operating handle back andforth to check that it moves freely, if it does nottake out the bolt carrier and check to make sure

everything is installed correctly and nothing isdamaged. Close the bipod and unfold thestock. Insert the assembly pin into the hole andpress it in until it is flush with the outside of thestock.

Changing the safety operation direction:The safety button on the SU-16 rifle can bereversed so that the safety can be engaged byeither pressing on the right side, or the left sideof the safety button, depending on yourpreferences. You will need a few tools to flipthe safety button including a Philips head screwdriver, a small flat head screw driver or otherthin tool for prying, and a small paper clip.Bend the paper clip out so that it has a smallhook on one end and a handle shape on theother as shown in the figure below.

Unload your SU-16 rifle and cycle the operatinghandle to be sure that there is no round in thechamber. Make sure the bolt is in the forward

Page 18: KELTEC CNC INDUSTRIES INC - textfiles.compdf.textfiles.com/manuals/FIREARMS/keltec_su16.pdfthe trigger. Functioning At the start of this cycle the weapon is assumed already loaded,

position and the safety is engaged. Put the rifleon one of its sides and loosen the four screwson the sock that are closest to the muzzle endof the rifle as shown in the figure. Do not loosenscrews that are screwed into the receiver. Flipthe rifle over and loosen the four screws thatwere in the same position as the previous fouryou just loosened. Hold the rifle so that it isupside down and resting on it’s top, you mayneed to remove the sight and any otheraccessories that are mounted to the picatinnyrail. Push your small screwdriver or prying tool

into the gap in the bottom rear of the triggerguard so that there is enough of a gap to getyour paper clip tool in between the two stockhalves at the back of the base of the triggerguard. You may need another prying tool tohelp enlarge the gap. Put your paper clip hookinto the gap you just pried open starting fromthe butt end and move the hook towards thetrigger, you should be able to hook onto theback of the trigger spring. Lift up on your toolto raise the trigger spring. While holding thespring up push out the safety, flip it around, andput it back. Release the pressure on the triggerspring and remove the paper clip hook. Checkto be sure that the safety moves back and forthcorrectly. Remove the pry tool from the triggerguard. Tighten all the screws that you loosenedon both sides of the stock. Check the operationof the safety before loading the rifle.

SIGHT ADJUSTMENTSight adjustment on the SU-16 rifle depends onthe placement of the rear sight, if the sight isplaced farthest forward on the picatinny rail therifle will have a different sight radius than if thesight is placed farthest rearward on thepicatinny rail. The main data below is given for

Page 19: KELTEC CNC INDUSTRIES INC - textfiles.compdf.textfiles.com/manuals/FIREARMS/keltec_su16.pdfthe trigger. Functioning At the start of this cycle the weapon is assumed already loaded,

when the rear sight is placed on the farthestrearward slot on the picatinny rail, the data inparentheses is for when the rear sight is placedon the farthest forward slot on the picatinny rail.

Use a coin or large screwdriver to adjust thewindage by the two screws on each side of thefront sight block. Before turning a screwclockwise (in) the opposite must be backed outthe same amount. 1/4 of a turn changes thepoint of impact 1.3"(1.6”) at 100 yards or 1.3m.o.a. (1.6 m.o.a.). One full turn is 5.2 m.o.a.(6.4 m.o.a.) By turning the left screw clockwise(in) the sight moves to the right and the point ofimpact to the left.

Before tightening the screws, the post may bepushed up or down to adjust elevation. .007"(.005”) will change the impact 1 m.o.a.

DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN.

MAINTENANCE

Your rifle is a precision instrument and to insurereliable function, it is necessary to follow aroutine maintenance procedure. After firing yourrifle, be sure to unload it following the proce-dure outlined in the section entitled “Unloading”before any cleaning or maintenance procedure.

Routine cleaning, after every shootingsession:Your rifle should be cleaned by brushing thebarrel bore and chamber with a good powder-removing solvent and bore brush. Wipe theareas clean with patches or a swab. Using asmall brush dipped in solvent, remove alldeposits from around the breech of the barrel, and chamber, extractor and adjacent areaswhich have been subjected to the action ofpowder or primer residue. Remove any residueon the frame with light brushing and a solvent. After cleaning the entire gun, use a cloth toapply a light coating of high quality gun oil to allexternal surfaces and wipe clean.

Additional cleaning, after firing 500 rounds:Remove the bolt carrier assembly and fullydisassemble it as stated in the disassemblysection of this manual. Thoroughly Clean withsolvent and a brush the piston head, piston pin, piston rod, recoil spring, recoil spring tube, bolt, cam pin, firing pin, and bolt carrier. Do notclean the firing pin pin, solvents can damagethe O-ring used to hold it in place. Thoroughlydry all parts. Apply a light coat of oil to the firingpin, bolt, cam pin and the surfaces in the bolt

carrier where the bolt, cam pin, and firing pinslide. Apply a light coat of oil on the piston rodand assemble the bolt carrier assembly andrifle as stated in the assembly part of thismanual. Manually cycle the bolt back and forthto check the function of the rifle. If any parts aredamaged or badly worn or the rifle does notwork correctly the rifle should not be fired andshould be returned to Kel-Tec for servicingimmediately.

LUBRICATION WARNING:Firing a rifle with oil, grease, or anyother material even partially obstruct-ing the bore may damage the rifle andinjure the shooter and those nearby.Do not spray or apply lubricantsdirectly on ammunition. If the powdercharge of a cartridge is affected by thelubricant, it may not be ignited, but theenergy from the primer may be suffi-cient to push the bullet into the borewhere it may become lodged. Firing asubsequent bullet into the obstructedbore will damage the rifle and mayinjure the shooter and bystanders. Uselubricants properly. You are respon-sible for the proper care and mainte-nance of your firearm.

WARNING: It is not recommended thatyou disassemble the stock of the SU-16rifle; the hammer spring is constantlyunder tension and can easily injure you

or others. If the need arises to lubricatethe trigger assembly do so through theaccess slot behind and in front of thehammer.
