LIFE AS A SLAVE

• Life was very difficult for her• She grew up in a

one-room cabin with her eleven siblings

• At the age of six, she was loaned out to another family where she took care of a newborn baby.• All they fed her

were table scraps

NOTHING STOPPED HER

• At the age of 13, she changed her name from “Araminta” to “Harriet”, after her mother• Not long after, she received a horrible head injury

from being hit by a metal rod• The injury nearly killed young Harriet and caused

her to have dizzy spells and blackouts for the rest of her life

FREEDOM RINGS

• In the fall of 1849, Harriet made the decision to escape to Pennsylvania

THE SCARY RETURN

• Even though she made it to freedom, Harriet decided to return for her friends and family• One group at a time, Harriet guided her family

and several dozen other slaves to freedom by ways of the Underground Railroad• They only traveled by night

• Harriet acquired the nickname “Moses”, because like in the bible, Harriet led the slaves to freedom

FUGITIVE SLAVE ACT

• In 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act was passed.• This read that if slaves were caught in the North,

they had to be returned to their owners in the South.• This now meant that Harriet had to lead everyone

in an escape all the way to Canada

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD

• As a conductor in the Underground Railroad, Harriet proudly proclaimed that she made over 19 trips helping slaves escape
