FASHION OF THE 1960’S

- A group promoting peace, love, and protesting war were known as the Hippies. (Jennings)

- The Women’s Liberation Movement in the early 1960’s was led my Eleanor Roosevelt. Which was a movement for equality consiting of protests, and womens liberation groups. (Ember)

- The Civil Rights Movement, a movement for equality, started in 1954 and ended in 1968.

MANY MOVEMENTS

Jackie Kennedy was a fashion Icon for the 1960’s decade. Here are some of the things she wore.

- Jackie loved to wear bright colors such as pink, yellow, red, and ivory. (IBTimes)

- Daywear consisted of sleeveless dresses, Chanel jackets or suits, long white gloves, pearls, and skirts. (IBTimes)

- Casual days consisted of a blouse, high-waisted trousers, turtlenecks, or cashmere sweaters.

- She made the Pillbox hat popular.

There are many important designers of the 1960’s but here are a few that impacted that decade the

most. - Yves Saint Laurent contributed to the Mondrian

Shift dress, safari jacket, pea coat, and le smoking tuxedo. (Kane)

- Givenchy designed the little black dress. (Jennings)

- Andre Courreges created the mini skirt. (Kane)- Ossie Clark made a name by dressing

celebrities. (Kane)

The 1950’s kept everyone bottled up, but in the 1960’s everyone exploded and broke the fashion rules. Styles were

always changing, there seemed to be a new trend every season.

1961- Fashion was all about the costume look.

1962- Focused on sleek and slender shoulders, softly bloused with muffled neckline, and a “natural” outline, which fell in a simple, form- fitting line.

1963- Included knee- high skirts, sleeveless dresses, and lower heels. Furs also became very popular, leopard was the leading fur of them all.

1964- Ruffles, fitted bodices, lace, and pleats were in style. The hair bow also made its way back into the fashion world.

The catch phrase “do your own thing” was put into practice in the late 1960’s.

1965- Women wore low hipster pants and the “poor boy” sweater.

1966- Women wore ties, mannish jackets, shoulder handbags, and gaudy jewelry. Furs were out and gloves were a must.

1967- The skirts got shorter and the boots got taller.

1968- Women shopped at thrift shops for a more “colorful, loud, and expensive look.” Accessories were overdone usually overpowering the outfit.

1969- Women wanted a more slimmer look, so this meant clothes fit tighter. Every was topped with a jacket or longer coat.

- Women today are still inspired to wear colorful pants, shift dress, and the boho- chic look.

- They also continue to wear skirts above the knee with printed stocking, knee- high boots, and leopard print.

- 60’s fashion has inspired women today to be out of the ordinary and have their own unique style.
