ESIDENT'S MESSAGE Perhaps few colleges have "grown up" as suddenly as has Indiana Techn i
cal College. One day OUr faculty and st udent body occupied approximately 40,000 square feet in a downtown building , part of which was a converted mortuary. The next day the students and faculty held classes on a campus of twenty-two buildings occupying more than twenty acres! (Those of you who were here in the summer of 1957 know that the transition, while not quite as dramatic as that, was almost as sudden!)
The root growth of Tech since its inception in 1930 made possible this sudden fruition. Fertile seed has been planted in well-tilled soil. Each of us,faculty member and student has worked vigorously and God has blessed our efforts!
On our new campus evidence of growth is all about us. The new Dana Science Building gives testimony of continuous growth and expansion. Through the years, buildings will be added to help meet the ever-increasing responsibilities which confront institutions of higher learning. Brick, mortar and modern buildings, however, do not make a college. The essence of a college is a competent faculty , teaching curious and since re students. We, the faculty and Administration of Indiana Technical College, pledge to you, the students , our best efforts.
ARCHIE T. KEENE, President
Mr. Dana speaks at Cornerstone Laying Ceremony.
The cornerstone for the new Dana Science Building on the Ind iana Technical College campus is placed in position by Charles A. Dana, President of Dana Corp. as Archie T. Keene, Presiden t of the college, and other dignitaries look on.
At My open house or homecoming, a reception center for registration and guides for tours of the premises are essential e lem.ents. Above shows the reception center and some guests r.egistering . Above , Miss Neuman , secretary at Tec h, passes ou t litera ture pertaining to the fe stivities to Mr. and Mrs. K. N. Campbell of Mead J ohnson a nd Co. while Daniel Noble of Motoro la and J o hn Mee of Indiana Un iversity look on .

It was Cha rles A. Dana, who as Founder and Pres

When the offer of the new bui lding was made, Mr,
Dana "challenged " the college and the commun ity
to raise an additiona l $600,000 to purchase equip
ment for the new building and to remodel and reno
vate the existing bu ildings on Tech 's campus. This
cha llenge was met through the ded icated services of
committee members who worked lo ng and diligently
in behalf of the Tech Advancement Program . We
know that in sa luting Mr. Dana , he would be the first
to point out th at without the gene ros ity of local and
area firms, foundations, friend s and alumni, thi s mo

The life of every man is a diary in wh ich he writes
one story but means to write another; and hi s hum
blest moment is when he compares the volume as it
is, to what he vowed to make it. (S ir James Barrie) .
Yearbooks have little sig nifica nce other than so u
ven ir proportion when first rece ived . Their value to
the individual increa ses as time passes.
The picture story which unfolds as the pages are
turn ed, depicts the events whi ch took place while you
attended Tech. Th ese events wi ll probably be made
more memorable for those who participated in some
of the school activities .
Participation is the spice of existence let the
life yo u look back upon be a zestfu lone.

AERONAUTICAL
ENGINEERING Aero nautical Engineering ha s made momento us
strides in the 54 years sin ce the firstflight of heavier
than -air ma chines. Since the Wright Brothers first
airplane t o t oday 's superso nic fighters, the airc rnft
industry ha s seen many changes. T oday 's aircraft de
signers a nd bui lders wo rk a s a team . In dividual en
g ineers concentrate their effo rt on smal l phases of
the overall project, resulting in a complicated but
efficient design. More and more scie ntific knowledge
is necessary t o keep pace with today's advanced
aircraft. The impo rtan ce of basic knowledge in t he
field s of mathematics, ph ysics , and mechanics is be
co ming mo re apparent. The Aero nautical Engineer
ing Department at Indiana Tec hnical College strives
to have the student well prepared in the basic
sc ien ces befo re the advan ced aeronautical topics
are undertaken. A graduate with a B.S. degree in
Aeronauti ca l En gineering may enter many pha se s of
the a ero nauti cal field. The ever increa sing adva nces
in the fi eld of ae ronau ti cs , suc h a s the earth sa tell ite
pro ject, wi ll continue to o ffer a challange to the
engineers of the present a nd future.

One of the newest branches of engineer
ing, Chemical Engineering, ha s advanced
rapid y. Practically all indust ry in some stage
of processing, development, or manufactur
ing, must depend upon men with a knowledge
of chemistry. Today t here are highly spec ial
ized and diversified field s such as Gas , Metal
lurgical, Ceram ics, and Petroleum. Because
of its being the basic technology underlying
the development and operation of virtually
all industry , Chemical Engineering will realize
even greater growth in the years t o come.

Chemistry is one of the fundamental
sciences, im portant both in that it underlies
all phases of modern living and in its own
ri ght as a field of employment for the sev-

Its scope includes everything from process
control and analysis to the "g lamor" fields
of nuclear science and rad ioactive tracer
technique, biochemical research, and or

ENGINEERING
The development in th e various branches
of engineering ha s created new problems in
the desi gn and construction of bu ilding s,
highwa ys, airports , and other structures. The
Civ il Eng ineer is meeting the demands of our
present age with new methods and ideas.
Even though Civil Engineering is the oldest
of the fie lds of engineering , it con tinues to

DEPARTMENT Engineering Drawing is a desc ripti ve
g ra phica language used by eng ineers and designers throughout the world to express, deve lop, and reco rd their ideas and information . Men of industry have indicated that Engineeri ng Drawing is not onl y important, but a bso lutely necessary . Students need a tho rough g rounding in the fundamen tals of science and communication , and should be trained ear ly in the eng inee rin g approach for the solution of p roblem s. They must have traini ng in space visualization; they must develop th e ir powers of analysis and synthesis; they must be g iven experience in crea ti ve think ing at the start of their college work; and their abilities to develop and record ideas mu st be consta ntly challenged .

If, as has been said , "this is the atomic
age." the n this is the age of physics. Nuclear
weapons and machines are products of the
physics laboratory . Each new day find s the
physicists of our nation ever widening hori-
zons of man 's knowledge. Therefore, Indiana
Technical College meets the need for train
ing in physics by offerin g basic and advanced
courses designed t o prepare a st udent
either for direct participatio n in industry, or
for a scientific career of the more traditional
type.

With a fine aggregation of seasoned veteran s and agg ress ive newcomers, the 1957 -1958 basketball team coached by Murray Mendenhall Jr. , started with a bang. The Warriors won theirfirst three qames by impress ive margins . Bli ss wa s the first team to hand Tech a defeat but the Warriors avenged this later in the sea son .
During the season, two teams Anderso n and Oakland City won both ends of the home-andhome en counters. Tech fa ired even better by taking both games from Concordia , Tri-State, Hunting ton and Lawrence Tech . The Warriors ma intained possession of the " Bu lging Bo iler" by virtue of the victories over T ri-State. The team split with Detroit
Rudy, taking a hookshot
Tech, Bliss and Vincennes, eac h winning one of the games. In the various single game enco unters, Tech won three out of five.
It was a very succe ssful year for the Orange and Black. One of the highlights o f the season was when Tech scored the ir highest total number of points for a single game. This was against Lawrence Tech in the la st game of the sea son at the ho me co urt. Final score wa s I 12-82. Previous high wa s I I I points against Bliss in 1955.
Only si x games were really close, scorewise, and were decided with only a difference of four points or less .
Congratulations are in order to this fine team which represented ITC with not only some good basketball playing but fine team spirit and sportsmanship .

This year Tech was able to complete the largest ba seball schedule in the hi story of the school. The dry weather thi s spring enabled the Warrio rs to play all 18 of their scheduled games of wh ich they won 8 and lost 10. As over half of the team was composed of " rookies" , Coach Mendenhall is looking forward to th e fu ture.
In the hitting department, centerfielder, Bob Wentz, finished the season batting an impressive .402 average with pitcher-outfielder, Ray Rowle s, following very close behind with a .396 average. Rowles was, also, the leading pitcher of the team with a 5-2 record.
Only two players were lost due to graduation and they are Roger Whittig and Larry LaCotti .

FENCING
Te ch Fencing Club at practice under the supervision of Coach Wahl.

For many yea rs Fencing was an old world accomplis hment. Now, however, it is different. America with its establi shed reputation of leadership has added fen cing to its lo ng list of sports and has developed man y fen cers who a re equals to the ir European rival s.
Fencing is a game of willpower and spirit; it is a creative game and is an excellent school of individual combat. It demands the highest association of mind and mu scles. It develops strength, re sistance,

q ui ckness and coolness of mind. In fen ci ng there a re periods where two opponents are in contact through the medium of two thin shafts of steel; these are like an antenna down whose length, messages of strength, weakness , anti c ipation, nerves, tension, plan, and counter-plan are broadcast. The element of surprise is vital and a crafty fighter will spend minutes building up premises of fa lse security in hi s opponent's mind.
To begin with a few definitions, there are three standard international weapon s availab le the foil, the Epee, and the sabre . There are differen t in size, shape a nd weight and each has its own set of rules. In a fencing tournament the team has to compete in all three weapons . For many years fencing has been taught at the Indiana Technical College and many fine fencing teams have gone out to compete with leading universi ties such as Chicago University, Notre Dame, Detroit, Iowa State University, Indiana University, etc.
Ed. Note: This copy wa s submitted by Henry E. Wahl, an active member of the C oach' s Association of America and fencing instructor at Indiana Tech.

Thoug h Indiana Tech's Track Team did not fair too we ll, win-wise, the losses incurred were not due to lack of team spirit but ra t her due to la ck of team strength. In many of the individu al events during the season's track activities, Tech had only one entry. Had they had more entrants per individua l event , the sea son's record would surely ha ve been better.
Tech 's T rack Tea m did have, with i n its ranks, some excellent competitors. Ivars Veldre was undefeated in the shot put, di scus throw, and javelin th row in the four meets. Kent J ohn s won the mi ~e run three ti mes, the two-mile , twice, and placed in the othe r meets. Smith won the broad jump three times and placed in the other meet. Rudy Stegelmann placed in the high jump in every meet and Shelton usually placed in the 100 and 200 yard dashes.
Some of the members of the tea m entered into competition at the Litt le State Track meet at DePa uw Unive rsity at Greencastle, In diana . Eve ry college in In d iana is eligib le to enter t his meet except the Big Three I.U., N.D. , and Purdue. Th irteen co lleges participated. Veldre placed third in the

T AC shotput and fifth in the javelin throw. Smith and J ohns both placed sixth in the broad jump and mile run, respectively.
Thoug h there wa s a fairly good turn out for track fo r the first year at Tech, Coa ch Mendenhall hopes to see many more come out the next year.

The win by the Mechanica l Club over the Sigma Phi Delta team climaxed the Intramural Basketball season and resulted in the Mechanical s being the undisputed "C hamps" of the season's play. The final score was 33 -26,
The victors had to playoff a tie situation in t he Western League with the Civils before advancing to the championship t il t against Sigma Phi Delta who were the Eastern Leagues champs,
Sixteen teams participated with each league comprised of eight teams. Much enthusiasm, team play, and good sportsmanship were demonstrated throughout the entire season. This would seem to ind ica te that next year should be even a better one. An interesting side li ght is that for some of those who participated in the games, it was their first encounter with this sport,

The members, a lthough small in number, have pre
sen ed a Chem ical Society which is commendable;
hey have by the ir interes s and activities presented
a good socia l program supplemented with techni
cal sem inars.
The purpose 0 a specific society, such as he
American Chem ical Socie y, is 0 advance he pro-ession it represents; 0 better socia l re la tionsh ips
o persons in con jugate professions and to aid mem
bers in associat ing with one another, thereby learn
ing how 0 deal with people and becoming poten-
ial leaders. I ha s been with these ideas that the society func ioned during the term 1957-1958. Reg
ular b i-weekly meetin gs were he ld throughout the year as were a lso the chemical seminars. The members, hemse lves, organ ized their func ioning body
and socia l committees. Elec ions were held for the various offices . Two fie ld tr ips were sponsored: One

the other, to Eli Lill i and Company which is in In
dianapolis . These excursions were chosen so that students would have the opportunity of seeing the
practical end of chemistry, and also to see how
chemistry funct ioned as an industrial giant. A ban
quet was held during wh ich a notable guest spea ker,
Dr. Micelli from the United States Rubber Company, a lked about his part icular fie ld in chemistry rub
ber and its present applications.
For the extremely socia lly minded , the society he ld a " smoker" at the beginning of each term.
Th is funct ion served as a "get acqua inted " gesture
to introduce the new members to th e socie ty. Both
the new members and the o ld fe lt that this was an
excellent way of meeting one another. The soc iety
hopes that the coming year wi ll bring more members into its fo ld , and it looks to the future with a fee li ng of optimism : More members, more activi
ties, and more accomplishments .
