Because of the success Casa Xara and Casa Molino have had as weekend rentals, the lovely property now has Casa del Bosque, a little cabin fit for four, leading out to a beautiful porch where you can watch the sunset go down in the Tecpan hills.

The house sits atop a small hill with a beautiful garden with colorful flowers and peach trees. Just behind the cabin, you have two hike trails that you can easily walk in less than an hour but if you feel like vegging out the house is equipped with satellite TV. At night you can come out and seat in the grass and watch all the dazzling stars while you zip a glass of wine or your favorite drink. The house also is equipped with a little kitchen where you can cook your own meals.

The trails harbor dozens of bird species, and of course the main character being that beautiful blue feathered specimen called Xara or blue jay.

La casa se encuentra sobre una pequeña

colina con un hermoso jardín con flores

y árboles de durazno. Justo detrás de

la cabaña, tendrán dos senderos para

hacer caminatas que se pueden recorrer

fácilmente en menos de una hora, pero

si se sienten con ganas de descansar,

la casa está equipada con televisión

vía satélite. Por la noche pueden salir

y sentarse sobre la grama y observar

todas las estrellas deslumbrantes mientras

toman una copa de vino o su bebida

favorita. La casa también está equipada

con una pequeña cocina donde podrán

cocinar sus propias comidas.

Los senderos albergan a decenas de

especies de aves, y por supuesto al

personaje principal, el hermoso pájaro

de plumas azules llamado Xara o

arrendajo azul.

Encontrar un restaurante espectacular siempre es de

esos descubrimientos que provocan mariposas en el

estómago. Si ustedes se consideran como un “Foodie”,

tendrán que tener una lista de restaurantes a probar

antes de morir, y entre esos deben incluir algunos

con las famosas estrellas Michelin…pero también

los restaurantitos familiares, que siguen vibrando

con energía positiva y comida espectacular por su

trayectoria de muchas décadas en existencia. Así es

Cardinali, el perfecto restaurante italiano ubicado

en el centro histórico de Xela, que solo al entrar y

observar las paredes, las botellas de vino colgadas

que se han acumulado por más de 100 años, nos

hace imaginar cuanta gente ha pasado a dejar su

pedacito de corazón y sus aventuras.

Finding an amazing restaurant is one of those discoveries that make me so nervous, I can’t believe that this amazing food is within my reach. If you consider yourself a “Foodie”, for sure you’ve got the list of the best restaurants in the world worth trying, you even plan your trips around the restaurant reservations, and some must have a Michelin Star… but the magic of food is finding those little places, usually family business, where the energy is so alive and the food is way to far above your expectations. That’s the way I felt at Cardinali, the perfect Italian style restaurant located in downtown Xela… just from the door you can see it in the walls, the empty bottles of wine hanging beside amazing pictures of touristic Italy, stating the history of the place, more than a 100 years, that makes us think of all the people who have dined inside and left a little piece of their heart and adventures in the walls.

Just the first bite of your amazing plate, and you feel passion of a “Nonna” who put her heart and soul to create the best recipes, the only way an Italian woman know to share some love with anyone visiting their sacred kitchen. Have a bite of some spectacular gnocchi, that perfect flavor you wont be able to share, but non the less the neighbor will steal some bites, where the pizza can be so cheesy, you’ll only want more cheese on it, and the pastas, fish and meat, everything tastes like an explosion of flavors in your tasty mouth!!! And remember, the “selfie” of your group will be so amazing, because the place is a delight not only culinary but cultural as well. It wont matter if your group is divided by gender, because the stories you’ll create are the kind of stories you’ll want to write and share and save in your memory, just like any good meal shared with a bunch of new friends that only adventure knows how to unite.

The mood is unique, and the best thing is that even if there is no light in the city, the waitress will be there with a smile and a menu, waiting for you. And being in Xela, you’ll have to drink a Cabro, the best local beer. If you are cold, ask for any soup with a bunch of cheese inside, because even if you get up your chair with a couple more pounds, your heart will be happy and wanting to come back. Volcanoes are those majestic sacred places that take us a little closer to the clouds. If you ever decide to hike the Santa María volcano, located outside Xela City in Quetzaltenango, I can assure you that you wont regret this incredible experience.

Los volcanes son esas montañas sagradas que nos acercan un poco a las nubes sin estar soñando. Si se les ocurre escalar el Volcán Santa María, que queda en las afueras de Xela, en Quetzaltenango, les aseguro que no se arrepentirán de esta increíble experiencia.

La caminata tiene una distancia aproximadamente de unos 5.5 kilómetros, en un sendero en la primera parte que parece un antiguo camino de carros. Después de caminar alrededor de 2 kilómetros, van a

llegar a la meseta, el área perfecta para tomar un descanso, pues es la última para poder sentarse a tomar una refacción y beber algo de agua. Después de esta parada, seguirán adentrándose por el sendero, y aquí se darán cuenta que la vegetación cambia bastante mientras siguen ascendiendo. Solo puedo describirlo como un bosque húmedo dónde tendrán la suerte de escuchar a los pájaros cantar.

El camino en el bosque sigue por aproximadamente 2.5 kilómetros, y luego el sendero se convierte en una escalera natural formada por piedras que los obligará a respirar profundo y empezar a silbar Stairway to Heaven de Led Zeppelin. En este pedazo hay menos árboles, ¡pero la vista que tendrán de las nubes sobre la ciudad es espectacular!.


place where you can sit on the grass and grab a snack and zip some water. Following the snack, you will get back on the trail, and observe how the vegetation changes meanwhile you keep hiking in it. I can only describe it as a humid forest where you could see and hear all kind of birds.

The forest trail goes up about 2.5 more kilometers, and then it changes again to a trail made by natural rocks, that looks almost like a ladder that will make you take a deep breath, and hum Stairway to Heaven (Led Zeppelin) while you climb up. There are fewer trees up there, but the view above the clouds over the city is amazing.

Cuando lleguen a la cima la vista panorámica de 360 grados que tendrán es realmente espectacular. De un lado tendrán el valle donde esta la gran ciudad de Xela; al otro lado está México y los dos volcanes más altos de Guatemala, el Tajumulco y el Tacaná. Y si se voltean al otro lado observarán el famoso “cinturón de fuego” que incluye la vista a los volcanes Zunil, Santo Tomás, Pakisis, San Pedro, Tolimán, Atitlán, Acatenango, Fuego y Agua. Y para ponerle una guinda al pastel, si voltean al último cuadrante podrán distinguir al volcán Santiaguito que al día de hoy sigue activo, y probablemente lo observarán con una gran nube gris de gases volcánicos.

When you arrive to the top of the volcano, the 360-degree panoramic picture is really amazing (take the picture). To one side you have the Xela Valley; to the other towards Mexico you can spot the two highest volcanoes in Guatemala called Tajumulco and Tacaná. And if you look to the other

side you can watch the called “fire chain”, that goes from Zunil, Santo Tomas, Pakisis, San Pedro, Tolimán, Atitlán, Acatenango, Fuego and Agua volcanoes. And to put a cherry on a top, to the other end you can spot the active Santiaguito volcano with a long grey cloud of volcanic gases.

Si deciden quedarse a acampar, el

mejor lugar para armar campamento

es en medio de las paredes de roca,

que protegen un poco de los vientos

de la noche. Al terminar de armar el

campamento, se pueden sentar en la

lomita cerca de las carpas y ver caer

el atardecer sobre una cama de nubes

densas. Por la noche la temperatura

tiende a bajar a menos de cero grados,

así que deberán de llevar la ropa

adecuada para el frío y si tienen a quién

robarle un abrazo, mejor.

Si tienen suerte, podrán observar el cielo

como un lienzo de estrellas, y cuando

se levanten de madrugada a ver el

amanecer, es probable que vayan a

tener uno de esos momentos que lo dejan

a uno sin palabras, cuando sientan

la magia de los colores que emana la

primera línea de luz en el horizonte.

Después de apreciar el amanecer, no

podrán dejar de tomar fotografías,

porque querrán asegurarse que

¡cubrieron todo! Por que estoy seguro

que van a querer compartirlas en las

redes sociales, volverlas virales y darle

envidia a todos los amigos. No puedo

explicar ni describir con más palabras el

sentimiento de esta experiencia, pero les

comparto las fotos para que tengan una

If you decide to stay at night, you should as soon as you reach the top, made camp between some rock walls that cover a little from the winds during the night. After getting the tents ready, you can seat by the hill and watch the sunset through a thick bed of white clouds. In the night, the temperature drops and it gets below zero, so you should be prepared with cold equipment and someone to hug.

If you are lucky, the night can turn out to a canvas of stars in the sky, and when you wake up to see the sunrise, you can have a breath taking experience, with the magic of the colors from the first line of light in the horizon.

After appreciating the sunrise, you wont stop taking a lot of pictures, because you want to make sure you have it all covered! Be sure to share them on social media, people will get jealous. I can’t explain or describe the feeling, but I’ll share the pictures… Get to know Guate!

No hay duda de que hay algo de magia en el aire que flota en las hermosas Verapaces, y allí, en medio de una reserva natural, en las colinas ocultas de San Cristóbal Verapaz, está el bello Hotel Panisté. A 15-minute boat ride on the crystalline waters of Peten Itzá lake finds its horizon at a green hillside that overlooks it. As you come up to Bolontiku hotel, you barely notice there is a construction there, just a few bungalows atop the water, as the rest of the hotel is strategically blended into the mountain as to not alter the amazing natural scenery. The moment you walk into the hotel, a completely different type of paradise waits.

Las primeras impresiones cuentan y se aseguraron

que fuera una muy buena. Al llegar los recibirán

en el muelle con toallas húmedas y una bebida

fría para ayudar a refrescarse un poco del calor

de la selva. La primera escena que se ve son

unas escaleras anchas (que recuerdan a las

escaleras de una pirámide) que conducen a

una piscina con fuentes y un amplio vestíbulo.

Sin embargo, aún con alojamiento de primera

línea, tal y como se evidenció desde que están

en el muelle, el ambiente no está diseñado para

ensalzar la construcción humana, si no para

hacer del entorno el personaje principal.

Serán conducidos a las habitaciones en carros

de golf ya que estas se encuentran dispersas

en la montaña en diferentes lugares y alturas,

asomándose por debajo de la densa selva,

evocando la sensación de un sitio arqueológico

que aun no ha sido totalmente descubierto.


First impressions count, and they do make it a good one. You´ll be greeted at the dock with cold towels and a chilled drink to help you cool off some of the jungle heat. The first scene you see is wide stairs (reminiscent of pyramid stairs) that lead to a pool with fountains and then a wide lobby. Still even when you have top of the line lodging, as it was evident when you pulled up to the dock, the ambiance is not designed to elevate human construction, but to make the surroundings the main character.

Golf carts will take you to the rooms, which are scattered on the mountain at different locations and heights, peeking beneath the dense jungle, evoking the feeling of an archeological site that is not yet fully discovered.

Inside the rooms the accommodations are top notch: beds, linens, amenities, the works, main attention must be paid to the indoor-outdoor shower that overlooks the lake –amazing-.

Las habitaciones son de primera clase:

camas, ropa de cama y amenidades, sin

embargo atención especial debe ser puesta

en la ducha interior-exterior con vista al lago,

increíble.

La atención al detalle va por encima de lo

esperado. La comida en el restaurante es

increíble, con un menú lleno de productos

locales presentados de una manera creativa

y contemporánea. Las mesas están siempre

decoradas con flores silvestres locales y

el servicio es impecable. Ellos harán todo

y cualquier cosa para que la estadía sea

agradable, incluso colocar orejas de ratón

sobre las bebidas que se sirven a los más

pequeños.

En el muelle, hay una hermosa sala de estar

y una fogata similar a las utilizados para

hacer ceremonias mayas estratégicamente

colocada delante de un espacio perfecto

para practicar un poco de yoga o

simplemente sentarse y contemplar el agua.

También, podrán sentarse y supervisar a sus

hijos mientras se zambullen en el agua desde

el muelle. Si lo desean, pueden reservar este

espacio para que en él les sirvan la cena.

Hay kayaks y lanchas de pedales disponibles

para los huéspedes sin cargo adicional, y

son una opción perfecta para disfrutar de

las cálidas aguas tranquilas de este hermoso

lago.

del Nahual asignado a su habitación (las

From then on, the attention to detail was above and beyond. The food on the restaurant is amazing, with a menu filled with local produce that is presented in a creative, contemporary manner. The tables are always decorated with local wild flowers, and the service is impeccable. They will do everything and anything to make your stay pleasant, even take the time to place mouse ears on the drinks being served to the younger guests.

In the dock, there is a beautiful lounge area with stretch chairs and a fire pit similar to those used to do Mayan ceremonies purposefully placed in front of a space that is perfect to practice some yoga or just sit there and contemplate the water.

Also, you may sit there and supervise while your kids dive in to the water from the dock. If you like, you may ask to have this space reserved and have dinner here. Kayaks and pedal boats are available to guests free of charge, and are a perfect choice to enjoy the warm calm waters of this beautiful lake.

Bolontiku refers to ¨the nine men of time and destiny¨ in Mayan mythology. While staying there, whichever Nahual room you are placed in (the rooms are named after the Mayan spirits), I guarantee that the concepts of time and destiny will hold a treasured meaning. Get to know Guate!
