KEITH JARRETT, CHAKA KHAN AND EARTH, WIND & FIRE AMONG THE HEADLINERS FOR THE TD TORONTO JAZZ FESTIVAL THIS SUMMER
Toronto – Wednesday, April 23, 2014 ~ Unveiled earlier today as part of the 28th anniversary lineup, two of music’s best will headline the TD Toronto Jazz Festival. Regarded as one of the most vital forces in jazz, Keith Jarrett will perform in a rare solo performance on Wednesday, June 25 at Roy Thomson Hall while R&B vocalist Chaka Khan kicks off the festivities on Thursday, June 19 at the Sony Centre. They join previously announced Earth, Wind & Fire (Tuesday, June 24) as part of the Legends of Music series. Chaka Khan – Thursday, June 19 Sony Centre On opening night, the 10-‐time Grammy Award winner, known for hits such as “I’m Every Woman”, “I Feel For You”, “Sweet Thing” and “Through The Fire”, will perform a collection of her greatest hits at the Sony Centre. With a rich musical legacy that has spanned across the genres, from R&B to gospel to soul and jazz, Chaka Khan has influenced a generation of artists with accolades that include 22 albums released; 10 #1 Billboard Magazine charted songs; certified gold and platinum albums; and has been the recipient of more than a dozen awards recognizing her contribution to music. The daughter of renowned blues guitarist Johnny Copeland, Shemekia Copeland will open. Copeland is highly regarded as a force to be reckoned with in blues and considered the heir to the rich tradition of soul-‐drenched divas like Ruth Brown and Etta James. PLAY AT NATHAN PHILLIPS SQUARE THIS SUMMER Toronto – Wednesday, April 23, 2014 ~ Unveiled earlier today, the lineup for the 28th edition of the TD Toronto Jazz Festival will feature nine nights of programming at Nathan Phillips Square, the hub of the Festival, when it kicks off summer, running from June 19 – June 28. Performers set to hit the Toronto Star stage include David Clayton-‐Thomas, Lettuce, John Scofield, Bobby McFerrin, Stanley Clarke, Galactic, Dianne Reeves, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and more. All shows begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at all Ticketmaster outlets or by calling 1.855.985.5000. The festivities get underway on Friday, June 20 when the Festival co-‐hosts the official opening of WorldPride 2014 with a FREE performance by Grammy Award winner Melissa Etheridge. Canadian R&B songstress Deborah Cox will open. David Clayton-‐Thomas – Saturday, June 21 The voice is legendary and is one of the most recognizable in music, selling to date over 40 million records. As the former frontman for Blood Sweat & Tears, Clayton-‐Thomas returns to the Festival performing a career-‐spanning medley of hits that has made him a national treasure. Oakland Stroke, performing a variety of Tower of Power hits, opens.
Kenny Wayne Shepherd / Robert Randolph & The Family Band – Sunday, June 22 Acclaimed blues guitarist-‐singer, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, has built an enviable resume two decades into a recording career that began when he was 16. One of the most talented and distinctive guitarists of his generation, Shepherd has sold millions of albums worldwide and continues to create genre-‐defining blues-‐infused rock n’ roll. The Family Band, led by pedal steel virtuoso, Robert Randolph take blues-‐rock and give it a raucous dose of funk and soul. Robert Randolph & The Family Band opens. This performance is presented by Mill Street.
Galactic / Big Sam’s Funky Nation – Monday, June 23 Galactic delivers precise, tight funk, making playing look easy. Chief purveyors of contemporary New Orleans jazz-‐funk, this popular jam band has an eclectic influence – jazz, rap, electronica, jam-‐band music and bounce (a local take on hip-‐hop) -‐ honed over years of performing live. The driving force of urban funk, Big Sam’s Funky Nation is notorious for starting a relentless “Noladelic Powerfunk” party in every city they play. Entertaining audiences with their high voltage energy level, BSFN will open for Galactic.
Dianne Reeves – Tuesday, June 24 One of the pre-‐eminent jazz vocalists in the world, Dianne Reeves returns to the spotlight with her first studio album in five years. Join us for an evening of vocal enchantment by a woman who has been described as “the vocal heir of Sarah Vaughan, whose voice could also travel anywhere…sheer gorgeousness” (The New York Times). Brandi Disterheft Quartet opens.
Lettuce / Dirty Dozen Brass Band – Wednesday, June 25 Lettuce, a seven-‐piece Brooklyn-‐based juggernaut, are the modern day rulers of old school funk. Taking a bottom-‐heavy, horn-‐driven approach to funk that draws influence from James Brown, Parliament Funkadelic, Tower of Power and other soulful touchstones, Lettuce has rightly solidified its place near the top of the modern jam / funk heap. Synonymous with genre-‐bending romps and high-‐octane performances, Dirty Dozen Brass Band is “the group that thrust New Orleans brass bands into the modern age” (NPR). Thirty-‐five years later, they are still jaw-‐dropping, eye-‐popping, thigh-‐slapping and nerve-‐rattling good. This performance is presented by The Grid.
John Scofield Uberjam Band / Dave Holland, Kevin Eubanks, Craig Taborn, Eric Harland -‐ PRISM – Thursday, June 26 John Scofield returns to the Festival with one of the most defining bands of his career, Uberjam. Confirming his reputation as a peerless jazz guitarist, while making groove and jam-‐oriented music at the highest level, Scofield will be reunited with the legendary band – Andy Hess (bass), Avi Bortnick (guitar) and Tony Mason (drums). Featuring an all-‐star quartet, bassist and Grammy Award winner Dave Holland’s latest ground breaking project, PRISM, is groove-‐oriented with a visceral edge. Reminiscent of his work with Miles Davis in the 70s, this jazz supergroup is an explosive outlet for Holland at his unbridled best. This performance is sponsored by JAZZ.FM91.
Bobby McFerrin -‐ spirityouall – Friday, June 27 For decades Bobby McFerrin has broken all the rules, blurring the distinction between pop music and fine art, exploring unchartered vocal territory and inspiring a whole new generation of acapella singers and the beatbox movement. In his latest project, McFerrin re-‐imgines Americana with beloved spirituals and original songs, raising the roof with joyful grooves. Soul Nannies opens. Stanley Clarke / Mehliana featuring Brad Mehldau & Mark Guiliana – Saturday, June 28 A true pioneer in jazz, four-‐time Grammy winner Stanley Clarke is quite possibly the most celebrated acoustic and electric bassist in the world. The living legend will be joined by two rising stars – drummer Mike Mitchell and keyboard player, Beka Gochiasvili from the Republic of Georgia. A brand new collaboration between two of the world’s most refreshing instrumentalists humanizing live electronic music with improvisation and deft ability, Mehliana pairs together world-‐renowned pianist Brad Mehldau and acclaimed percussionist Mark Guiliana. Mehliana takes in free improve, forays into drum’n’bass and a nod back to the dance-‐funk spirit of the early 70s. This performance is presented by hmv.

Gregory Porter – Friday, June 20 Gregory Porter, the newly crowned king of vocal jazz, has quickly risen to acclaim since his debut in 2010. With a righteous baritone and a voice that can embrace or exhort, caress or confront, Porter’s soulful scatting and warm musicality is reminiscent of Nat King Cole and Donny Hathaway. With one foot in soul and the other firmly planted in jazz, Porter flows with a sense of timelessness that reflects the giants of blues, gospel and soul. Roy Hargrove Quintet – Friday, June 27 Labelled a young lion during the late 80s and early 90s, Roy Hargrove has now firmly established himself to be one of America’s premier trumpeters. Always one to flex his musical chops, Hargrove has experimented throughout his career with a vast array of group configurations and recordings -‐ from the hip-‐hop / jazz collective RH Factor to the Cuban based band Crisol to standards and straight ahead jazz with The Roy Hargrove Quintet. Bill Frisell -‐ GUITAR IN THE SPACE AGE! – Saturday, June 28 One of the most sought-‐after guitar voices in contemporary music, Bill Frisell pays homage to the music of American electric guitarists of the 1950s and 1960s. Joined by Greg Leisz, Tony Scherr and Kenny Wollesen, this performance promises a rare look into Frisell’s formative influences. He comes together with rising star Julian Lage on their latest project, paying homage to the syntax of jazz while pushing the music into remarkable new territories. Featuring compositions by both players, along with a healthy amount of spontaneous improvisation, this will be a night of two extraordinary virtuoso guitarists in an intimate setting. Joey DeFrancesco Trio – Wednesday, June 25 Organ giant Joey DeFrancesco is single-‐handedly responsible for revitalizing the Hammond B3 organ sound and its place in modern jazz, leading over two dozen sessions and providing his fiery, soulful sound to recording and tours with names such as Miles Davis, Jimmy Smith, Ray Charles, John McLaughlin and David Sanborn. Toronto – Wednesday, April 23, 2014 ~ Canada’s finest musicians, performing everything from standards, the music of Broadway to ska, are set to take the stage this summer when the TD Toronto Jazz Festival kicks off from June 19 – June 28, 2014. “This is the top musical event of the summer in Toronto, “said Brian Gervais, Senior Vice President, TD Canada Trust. “At TD, we’re committed to communities across Canada in many ways including supporting festivals such as this one to bring people together through our mutual love of music.” Preview some of the exciting homegrown talent the Festival has to offer with three intimate performances at The HMV Underground (333 Yonge Street) from Monday, June 16 to Wednesday, June 18. Located in the lower level, do not miss musicians such as winner of this year’s Juno Award for Traditional Jazz Album of the Year, the Mike Downes Trio on Monday, June 16. Myriad3, described as modern jazz meets classical meets pop meets Oscar Peterson, performs Tuesday, June 17. Hailed as “Canada’s emerging Latin music Queen”, Eliana Cuevas plays Wednesday, June 18. On Thursday, June 19, at Lula Lounge, the TD Toronto Jazz Festival is pleased to present a special double bill performance with drummer Memo Acevedo and woodwind specialist Jane Bunnett. Acevedo, credited with pioneering the Afro-‐Cuban, Brazilian and Latin Jazz music styles in Canada, returns to the Festival with the Building Bridges Band and special guest Jacquelene Acevedo. Assembling an exciting new sextet that blends hardcore Cuban music with folkloric rhythms and jazz, Bunnett premieres her latest project, Maqueque, featuring the finest young women musicians in Cuba. A Vancouver native and Brooklyn transplant, composer and bandleader Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society is not so secret anymore. Credited with “making big band cool again” (Time Out New York) and “reinventing the jazz big band for the 21st century” (The Guardian), Argue has quickly become one of the most talked about musicians in jazz. With a Grammy and Juno nod for his critically acclaimed debut album, Argue returns to the Festival performing his sophomore release, Brooklyn Babylon, in its entirety on Sunday, June 22 at the Music Gallery. The Hard Rock Café will host two nights of great fun featuring Broadsway and Kelly & The Kellygirls. Joining forces for Broadsway, Julie Michels, Diane Leah and Heather Bambrick will perform on Friday, June 27, exploring everything from Gershwin to Gaga and Sondheim to
Schwartz. On Saturday, June 28, Kelly & The Kellygirls bring their wildly entertaining and unique show to the Jazz Festival. Fronted by Toronto artist and gay icon, R. Kelly Clipperton, the 7-‐piece ensemble melds ska, swing, jazz, reggae and flamenco creating a bold dramatic stage of theatrics when performing live. These performances are presented by Citytv. One of the best-‐loved jazz singers on the entertainment landscape, June Garber is welcomed back to Toronto with a spectacular four-‐night homecoming celebration at The Home Smith Bar. June Garber & Friends will offer an all-‐new show nightly, hosted by Garber and the Russ Little Quartet, featuring a different special guest star each evening in talented tribute to Garber’s return home. On Friday, June 20, Canada’s reigning queen of jazz and blues, Jackie Richardson performs. Blending her Mexican and South African roots with flamenco soul, Amanda Martinez joins the party Saturday, June 21. JAZZ 101 School’s in Session for Summer
Toronto – Wednesday, April 23, 2014 ~ Go beyond the music and explore the educational side of the TD Toronto Jazz Festival’s exciting initiatives including workshops, master classes, postsecondary outreach, mentorship and a number of hands-‐on programs in support of emerging artists and jazz fans of all ages. All sessions are free and open to the public. Jazz for the Teach offers two interactive sessions for teachers by teachers on Sunday, June 22 at the Paintbox Bistro in Regent Park. Led by acclaimed jazz educators and geared toward middle and high school music teachers looking to hone their jazz teaching skills, each session will cover a different aspect of jazz education: vocalist Lisa Martinelli and guitarist Andrew Scott will discuss jazz fundamentals and small combo playing (12 p.m. – 2 p.m.); educator and band leader Paul Read will discuss leading a big band (3 p.m. – 5 p.m.). This event is sponsored by the Ken Page Memorial Trust. The Big Band Slam features four Greater Toronto Area high school big bands in concert at The Rex Jazz & Blues Bar on Thursday, June 26, from 2 to 5 p.m. This afternoon of trumpet blasting, trombone sliding, sax squealing excitement will highlight some of the outstanding music being made by high school students across the city. Saxophonist, composer and conductor Mark Promane serves as this year’s guest artist, performing with each ensemble. This event is sponsored by the Ken Page Memorial Trust. The Youth Jazz Showcase showcases some of the outstanding young jazz talent from at home and abroad. On Saturday, June 28, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., four bands will take to the Toronto Star Stage at Nathan Phillips Square: The JAZZ.FM91 Youth Big Band; the National Youth Jazz Combo (Canada); the Anthony Fung Quintet (Berklee College, Boston); and from Sapporo, Japan, the Yoshihiro Murakawa Quartet, winners of the 2013 Sapporo City Jazz Park competition. This event is sponsored by the Ken Page Memorial Trust. The Artistic Director’s Guide to Jazz seeks to go “beyond the bio,” providing an in-‐depth personal look at some of the artists performing in the 2014 TD Toronto Jazz Festival. In regular online posts, Artistic Director Josh Grossman details what makes an artist great through personal anecdotes, video clips and more. This year we are also pleased to be partnering with Regent Radio to present the Artistic Director’s Guide to Jazz On The Air! In four sessions to be aired on Regent Radio, Josh chats with a local musician about some of the artists performing at this year’s Festival. The TDJ News Corps is an initiative geared toward postsecondary students who are interested in writing about jazz. Successful applicants to the TDJ News Corps program are given full media
accreditation for the Festival, granting them unprecedented access and allowing them to attend and review concerts, interview artists and experience the Festival from behind the scenes. In addition, TDJ News Corps members are assigned a mentor – an experienced music journalist. Groove & Graffiti is a two-‐day workshop for local area high schools where students are taught the history, relevance and unique expressions of graffiti used within the proper context. Now in its 11th year, Groove & Graffiti creatively combines the inspirational side of art and the inspirational (and improvisational) side of jazz. Generously sponsored by TD, this program is led by top local aerosol artists Elicser and Mediah, who offer educational and instructional components while giving students the opportunity to create their own canvases. Hiromi: The Trio Project – Tuesday, June 24 Known for her technique and high-‐energy performances, this Japanese-‐born pianist pushes musicianship to unprecedented levels of complexity and sophistication. An utterly original improviser and composer who turns each piece into a thrilling ride, Hiromi is one of jazz piano’s most brazenly virtuosic players capable of playing stride with blinding speed and deadly accuracy. Buika – Wednesday, June 25 Voted one of the best “50 Great Voices” by NPR and hailed as Flamenco Queen, Latin Grammy Award-‐winning jazz and flamenco vocalist Buika is blessed with a remarkable voice; raw and smoky but with a tenderness that hits right at the heart. Toronto – One of funk’s most legendary and influential bands, Earth, Wind & Fire, will headline the TD Toronto Jazz Festival this summer. From its modest beginnings with only three official venues, the Toronto Jazz Festival has grown in 28 years to become one of the country’s largest music festivals attracting over 500,000 people annually to more than 40 venues, clubs and stages all across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). With a rich tradition of presenting the young lions, the jazz greats and tomorrow’s rising stars, the Festival has woven its way into the very fabric of Toronto and become the sound of the city. Since its inception, the Festival has hosted over 29,000 artists, contributed more than $500 million to the local economy, welcomed 9.5 million people, and presented over 3,000 free public concerts. Responsible for the TD Toronto Jazz Festival, Patrick Taylor serves as Executive Producer and CEO of Toronto Downtown Jazz. Taylor was most recently recognized for his contributions to jazz with a Lifetime Achievement Award from Festival and Events Ontario and named a 2014 Jazz Hero by the Jazz Journalists Association. A graduate of the University of Toronto Jazz program, Josh Grossman brings invaluable experience to his role as Artistic Director of the TD Toronto Jazz Festival. He was Artistic Director for four years with the Markham Jazz Festival; he is the founding Artistic Director and conductor of the Toronto Jazz Orchestra, now entering its 16th year. Grossman has also served as Performance Manager for the Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School and Manager for the High Park Choirs; he has also served as Administrator for Continuum Contemporary Music, a role he continues today, since 2007. Grossman can be seen performing regularly with his Toronto Jazz Orchestra (conductor) and on trumpet with the Chris Hunt Tentet.
