Favorite Umpire Memory“Umpiring in the 2016 senior softball World Series , and I was told at the start of last semi final game, which I was not umpiring, that I would be on the field for the champi-onship game at first base. Florida, my home state, was playing in that semi final game. And yes I knew if Florida won I would not be able to be on the field for the championship game. So I sat there as a spectator cheering Florida on all the way. YES that’s right, cheering for Florida to win and they did just that. They were on there way to the Champi-onship game all smiles and full of dreams. Again I’m a spectator cheering and watch-ing Florida playing for World Series Championship and thinking how it would feel to be on that feild Umpiring a championship World Series. Well Florida won, These girls are sitting on top of the world full of laughter, smiles and memories . After all it’s not all about me...............it’s about these young girls and these memories that will carry them a lifetime.”

Unknown to me at the time our District UIC was in the stands doing an evaluation. After the game he did an honest critique and then wrote me a note that said simply “you’re going to be an outstanding Umpire.” I still carry that note in my bag. I’ve always used it as a reminder we always need to strive to improve and that being positive with your fellow Umpires is how we grow the family.”

Favorite Umpire Memory“Aside from the left fielder for Virginia laying herself out to snag a line drive fly ball to win the 2017 Senior Girls Southeast Region Championship - perhaps one of the best defen-sive plays I have ever witnessed - there was an incident this year that was quite notable. Major baseball game. Coach, are all of your kids equipped and ready to play per Little League rules and regulations? I get the obligatory “yes”. First Batter comes to the plate. TIME! please take your necklace off. I deliver it to the third base coach. Second batter comes to the plate. TIME! Please take your bracelet off. I deliver it to the third base coach. Third base coach yells at the dugout as I take my position behind the plate: “any-one else have any jewelry on?” A little voice replies: “I have a belly button ring.” TIME? Umpire is on his knees laughing until he’s in tears.”

Favorite Umpire Memory“My favorite umpire memory would be in the 2013 Jr. Baseball Southeast Regional. Florida was playing in an elimination game and was in the first base dugout. They were in their final at bat and were down by 1 with a runner at 3rd and two outs. The batter hit the ball hard on the ground to the shortstop, this batter runner for FL was really fast, the shortstop gets his glove on the ball and knocks the ball down and bobbles the ball, he then gathered the ball and throws a rocket to 1st for a bang/bang play! OUT!! I sold it so hard I almost passed out!! I then realized that they had been eliminated and an explo-sion happened in the 1st base dugout as FL was thinking he beat the throw. I stood there for a second or two and Doug Durling (another umpire that was working 3rd) hollered at me “Jason, Let’s GO!!” Doug was trying to get me away from the explosion and off the field on the 3rd base side. Doug described the seen as it would appear in the movies as the building is on fire, explodes, and the guy comes walking out all cool and collected! The guy walking out was me although I still don’t know how “cool and collected” I was! I’ll never forget that moment though and it was still one of the biggest calls I’ve ever made!”

Favorite Umpire Memory“One of my favorites: Mothers Day weekend 2018 I was in Norfolk Va. at the Jake Hardi-son Memorial Challenger Jamboree as an umpire. During the second game of the day as the teams switched sides a young man who had been in right field with his helper bud-dy passed by me and he stopped, came back to me and handed me one of their game balls. I told him thanks but he needed to take it up with him. He said no and for me to keep it because I had come to their event. I still Have it. I have many favorites but that one I will not forget.”
