The headline above is not just a title for this article but is our new name!

Reconstructing Judaism is the new name for Reconstructionist Judaism’s central organization, formerly known as the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College & Jewish Reconstructionist Communities. "We are committed to 'doing’ Jewish. With our new name, we are defining ourselves by what we do, and not just what we believe or how we feel,” says Rabbi Deborah Waxman, Ph.D., president of Reconstructing Judaism. "We all have to be accountable for the Judaism of today, and we need to build it together so that it inspires people in every generation. We’re thrilled and privileged to undertake Reconstructing Judaism for our time.”

The new logo illustrates leaves sprouting from the ground and growing into the world, reflecting the Reconstructionist balance between groundedness in Jewish tradition and a focus on Jewish growth and reinvention. The phrase that accompanies the graphic—"Deeply Rooted, Boldly Relevant"—reinforces the Reconstructionist connection to Jewish tradition and texts, while emphasizing the need to reconstruct Judaism continually in a way that is relevant for today's and tomorrow’s Jewish communities, refreshing Judaism and allowing it to thrive. "'Relevant’ is an imperative, not a descriptor,” says Waxman.

This announcement marks the start of a banner year for Reconstructing

Judaism. The college will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. June marks the opening of Havaya Arts, the first Reconstructionist summer camp located on the West Coast.

When Havaya Arts opens this summer, it will be the only Jewish overnight camp in North America focused exclusively on camper-driven, original art. It will be a place where vibrant Jewish communal life enhances art which, in turn, enhances Jewish life and identity.

Located less than two hours east of KI, campers will learn from working artists who are expert at providing a truly youth-centered experience. During each two-week session, campers will choose from one of four core disciplines: visual art, dance, theater and music. Electives will allow young artists to continue working in their core discipline or to explore another field. With access to various studios and outdoor spaces at our University of Redlands home, we’ll have all the tools and inspiration possible right at our fingertips. Please help me reach the young people who will benefit from and help define what Havaya Arts will contribute to the Jewish creative future.

With a deep Reconstructionist ethos and connection that

impact everything from arts studios to the creation of a one-of-a-kind Shabbat experience, campers and staff will work together to create this joyful, welcoming, and progressive Jewish community where young artists are inspired to grow. There are a limited number of $500 scholarships available from KI/Havaya Arts, and any camper who has never attended a Jewish sleep away camp will receive $700 from the Foundation for Jewish Camp. Please feel free to get in touch with me with any questions or for more information.

I hope you will join me in celebrating a new name and new logo which better express the sacred vision of the Jewish present and future we are boldly creating and crafting together. KI is recognized as a leader and as an important part of this restated mission. We need you to help us make it a rooted and relevant reality.

from our PRESIDENT

How can we explain why KI is so special, so relevant to our lives today? What are KI’s values? What is our soul?

In search of answers to these important questions, I recently re-read KI’s Vision 2020 Strategic Plan. It was written last year after an exhaustive process that involved participation by our Board, past Board members, our staff, and scores of congregants. I’d like to share part of it with you since it expresses who we are and what we’re about better than I ever could:

Our Mission

Kehillat Israel is an inclusive Jewish community, which honors diverse religious and spiritual backgrounds. Grounded in Jewish cultural and religious tradition, and guided by the core Reconstructionist principle to value both the wisdom of the past and the need for evolving belief and practice, KI seeks through prayer, learning and Tikkun Olam to create a sacred space in which its members of all ages may find meaning, purpose and joy.

BERT KLEINMAN [email protected]

WHAT DO WE STAND FOR?

New staff welcomeRobert Kutaj Director of Finance

I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of the Kehillat Israel family. Born and raised in the Chicago area, my wife and daughter and I relocated to Valencia 30 years ago after I accepted a job offer from CIGNA Hospital. I finished my formal education with an MBA at Pepperdine after a B.S. in Accounting from

Indiana University. I have never felt more at home in a job than I do here at KI. I look forward to using all of my financial experience in non-profits to assist with the continued growth of KI.

Our Values

As a community, our core values are grounded in the 3,000-year-old constantly evolving Jewish tradition. We believe that:

• We are all made in the image of the Divine and must treat each other with respect regardless of our differences.

• Since we are part of the broader human family, we must be guided by our responsibilities to each other, our community, our country and people all over the world.

• Jewish civilization, spirituality and observance should draw on Jewish tradition and must evolve to be meaningful in our lives today.

• A strong commitment to our children and their Jewish education is essential to a vibrant Jewish future.

• We are stewards of the earth and must nurture and protect it.

• There are many ways to live life “Jewishly,” not just one way.

• Learning and spiritual development are vital continuing imperatives, which both challenge and enrich our lives. In their pursuit, our tradition values exploration and questioning.

• A loving, inclusive Jewish community embraces and engages Jews from a wide variety of religious and secular backgrounds and beliefs as well as interfaith and non-traditional families.

• No one should be turned away solely on the basis of ability to pay.

• Excellence in leadership, finance and resource management are essential to a sustainable and vibrant future.

May we work together as a diverse, welcoming community to further these important values.

MATT DAVIDSON Executive [email protected]

from our EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I am so excited that at long last our Reconstructionist movement has created a summer camp here in

Southern California! Located on the campus of University of Redlands, Havaya Arts offers an amazing opportunity for your budding musician, dancer, fine artist or theatrical performer to hone their chops with arts professionals and camp counselors rooted in our Jewish tradition. I wish I was still a 4th-9th grader so I could take advantage and attend! Some of the most indelible moments of my childhood that are forever etched in my mind and the collective memory of my family are from my time in summer theater camp.

In its inaugural year, there are multiple scholarships available to you, specifically, as KI congregants, so parents, please take advantage! Grandparents, let your children know about this amazing opportunity for their kids! Here’s some more background on the camp: Founded in 2002, Camp Havaya (formerly known as Camp JRF) has become known as one of the premier non-profit Jewish overnight camps in the country. Continuing the Reconstructionist movement’s history of innovation, Havaya Arts is the first camp of its kind in North America.

Through the Foundation for Jewish Camp Specialty Camps Incubator, with the support of the Jim Joseph Foundation and the AVI CHAI Foundation, the movement is so excited to bring our creative and engaging programs to campers and families here on the West Coast.

As a Reconstructionist community open to all, Havaya Arts encourages each camper to explore our traditions and today’s world to discover what being Jewish means to you – and we believe art is an incredible vehicle through which you can do this searching and self-discovery.

At Havaya Arts, campers learn from working artists. Our arts faculty are expert at teaching to a variety of levels, providing a truly youth- centered experience. Campers choose from one of four core disciplines during each of our two-week sessions. Electives allow young artists to continue working in their core discipline or to explore another field. With access to various studios and outdoor spaces, all the tools and inspiration possible are right at our fingertips. Whether you go deeply

into a chosen art form or you try something for the first time, you’ll grow as an intentional artist and amazing human being.

Our campers come from all kinds of backgrounds—and each has a different story to tell. We have interfaith families; campers and staff of all sexual orientations and gender identities, as well as those from LGBTQ families; people of color; individuals with special needs; and families from all socio-economic situations.

Throughout the week, we provide a variety of opportunities (including

prayer, meditation and yoga) for connecting to something bigger than ourselves. And, together, we craft a unique Shabbat experience that is the perfect end to a week full of creation. Throughout all of this, our campers approach Jewish life on their own terms and, because it’s personal, the connection you make to Judaism is lasting.

To learn more or register, go to havayaarts.org.

preschool program: astronomy, construction, fairytales, culinary arts, water play and beach life, and sports and team games. Our track for graduates will incorporate all of these themes, as well as continued literacy and number practice, so that all of the hard work that the children have put in to prepare for kindergarten is not forgotten during summer vacation. The themes that we have chosen for the summer will create experiences that allow children to explore through dramatic play, science, the arts, experimentation, and social interaction.

The ECC teachers and staff are looking forward to welcoming everyone for a summer of play-based exploration and community-building. We also look forward to summer Shabbat celebrations with grape juice popsicles, challah and music!

In addition to camp, the Parenting Center will help transition new children into KI’s program who are able to attend and who will be starting school in the fall. Jaclyn, our Parenting Center Coordinator, plans to have her Shabbat class, as well as a Summer Fun in the Sun Class. The class will focus on water and sensory play with summer-themed art.

education EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER

As a child I always looked forward to summers filled with warm weather, popsicles, and, most

importantly, summer camp. Camp was an opportunity to focus on enjoying time with friends and exploring my interests. Looking back on those magical summers, I now recognize the developmental importance of camp programming. It was in those programs that I was able to focus on strengthening social skills such as working on a team, negotiating with friends, sharing space, and developing creativity with others during less structured time.

This past summer the Early Childhood Center was abuzz with people trying to ensure our construction would be finished in time for the first day of school, so we were unable to have our usual camp program. With the renovation now beautifully completed, we are prepared to relaunch camp and make it better than ever! This summer, we will have two tracks. One track will be for children who are 18 months through entering Pre-K, and the other track will be for children who are recent graduates of preschool. Both groups will explore our exciting themes which are based on the most popular topics in our

RACHEL LEVINJEC ASSISTANT DIRECTOR,

EXPERIENTIAL [email protected]

In 2006, Professor Michael Zeldin made this declaration while reflecting on a 1998 broadcast of NPR's "This American Life." The segment was called "Notes on

Camp," and program host Ira Glass faced an issue still relevant 20 years later. Glass attempted to “bridge the gap of misunderstanding between camp people and non-camp people,” explaining, "People who love camp say that non-camp people simply don’t understand what’s so amazing about camp.”

I would argue that the magic that is camp can’t really be explained – only experienced. You have to jump into the rituals and customs, meet the energetic and devoted staff members who make camp function, and make friends who speak the same camp language.

In the JEC, we provide our 3rd-7th graders with a taste of this magic. During the first weekend of February, the JEC held our annual retreat at Camp Alonim. We celebrated Shabbat, played human Hungry Hungry Hippos, went on an Olympics-themed scavenger hunt, tie-dyed t-shirts, and much more, while infusing Jewish values (middot) into each activity. The beauty of camp is the way in which campers become immersed in Jewish life, even for a short amount of time, and are offered an array of learning opportunities and modalities from which they can choose. Even one day at camp helps our students form deeper bonds with classmates quickly and create memories that will last a lifetime. If you are interested in sending your child to camp for a whole summer and would like to explore options, please contact us!

“Camp is magic.”

A Hidden Gem: Our KI LibraryThis time we’re highlighting different aspects of Jewish culture and language.

How the Hebrew Language Grew by Edward HorowitzThousands of years ago, Hebrew, in its most ancient form, did not have two or three hundred words. Since then Hebrew has grown to become one of the great modern languages of the world.

This is the story of its growth from a mere handful of words to its present rich state of history. (Call Number: 400 Hor)

Jewish Stories One Generation Tells Another, retold by Peninnah SchramThese stories link the past to the present and preserve an invaluable legacy from generation to generation. (Call Number: 38.2 S)

A Bintel Brief: Sixty Years of Letters from the Lower East Side to the Jewish Daily Forward by Isaac Metzker (Editor) and Harry Golden (Foreword)For more than eighty years the Jewish Daily Forward’s legendary advice column, “A Bintel Brief”

(“a bundle of letters”) dispensed shrewd, practical, and fair-minded advice to its readers. Created in 1906 to help bewildered Eastern European immigrants learn about their new country, the column also gave them a forum for seeking advice and support in the face of problems ranging from wrenching spiritual dilemmas to petty family squabbles to the sometimes hilarious predicaments that result when Old World meets New.

Learn Hebrew! We have books in the 400 Section of the library that will help you learn the Hebrew language both spoken and in synagogue. Come by and learn the languages of Judaism. ourKI.org | KI Quarterly 15
