Only one day after the first waves, satellite lines set up by TSF at a coordination center and a local hospital in Hambontota in southeast Sri Lanka

High-speed connection set up by TSF at a telecoms unit within the UN coordination center in Banda Aceh

Public phone booths with satellite phones set up by BSNL in Andaman and Car Nicobar islands

Similar equipment sent for deployment in far-flung areas

3 teams with 7 Inmarsat terminals headed for Kamrota, Katchal, Terassa, and Champin Island

“To be honest with you, if it wasn’t for Inmarsat’s equipment, I don’t think we would

have made it back home. We could have been imprisoned until now, or even shot dead

because the moment Basra fell, there was no control over the soldiers and in the chaos we

would likely have been shot on the spot. Inmarsat’s GAN was the only solution for us at

the time because it was our only way to contact base,” said Ali Safa, Engineer, Al Arabiya

Tsunami warning centers

Tsunami Warning Center detects tsunami activity and issues alert

Alert is broadcast, free of charge, and instantly to all Tsunami Watch Centers and ships around the region. Broadcast takes places via Inmarsat-C or mini-C satellite terminals

Tsunami Watch Centers take necessary measures for evacuations
