FROM THE RECTORY

Dear All

Last month I paid tribute to our community for the work carried out at St.Mary's Erpingham. Although it wasn't at that time finished, I waxed lyrical about how it was looking, because I could imagine how it was going to look in its finished state. However, even I, an eternal optimist, could not have imagined just how marvellous it would look on completion. It is truly amazing! Well done all who made this possible.

We have had some lovely and well attended services during May which gladdens my heart. It is good to witness the Adventurers getting their badges and taking their promise. I am so proud of them and those who lead them, especially Mick Monk.

I still labour on as the Keeping in Touch temporary Editor which I said I would do this until Easter, but still no-one has offered to step into my shoes. If you would like a confidential chat about it, then get in touch. Remember it is a Church Magazine for the Community and whoever it is will need to be computer literate and have at least a working knowledge of the church.

There are a number of special events in June and the week following raising money for the Churches. On Wednesday 15th. June we have the "Happy and Glorious" Concert at Erpingham to celebrate the Queen's 90th. Birthday, the Mannington Garden Party on June 18th.will be raising money for the replacement of the stolen lead roof at Thwaite, the VE Plus One event on Friday evening 24th.June for the Erpingham Church Fabric fund (plus a charity auction for Help the Heroes),and the Erpingham Fete on July 2nd for church funds. But let's remember, these events are principally a great opportunity to have a great time. Get your tickets NOW and come along and enjoy yourself.

Meanwhile, my very best to you all.

FRIENDS of THWAITE COMMON

This is early days to find out who would be interested in becoming a ‘friend’ of Thwaite Common.

The aim would be to work with the Thwaite Common Management Committee in the

conservation of Thwaite Common for wildlife (flora and fauna) and public enjoyment.

This could involve, for example, liaison between the local community and the Management Committee as well as practical conservation work, as approved and directed by them. If enough people were interested, a proper constitution would then need to be drawn up.

Membership would be open to residents of Alby-with-Thwaite and Erpingham-with-

Calthorpe parishes.

Scarrowbeck Adventurers June 2016 Millie Bacon. 15th. April 2016When I found out we were going to do shooting I was really excited, but when it was the night we had to shoot and I got really scared. Then it got to my go I was shaking, but we got six goes each meaning I got a bit of time to get used to it. I got four 5s and two 6s. This makes 32 my score overall, I got the highest score and I was really happy about this. I really enjoyed shooting and I'd love to do it all over again.Millie Bacon Aged 12 We are planning our outdoor survival training and this will start soon, current members will be advised by letter and or email of planned dates. You will see elsewhere that July 3rd will see our second investiture service, this time at Erpingham Mick Monk Chief Instructor.

Erpingham with Calthorpe WI.

Almost halfway through our year and many of us are spending rather more time out in the garden than anywhere else as the weather at last, begins to pick up.A reason to pause for thought was a talk at our last meeting from a representative of ‘Admiral Nurses’, a charity who provide support to individuals and families of people with dementia. A very useful organisation particularly in a community such as North Norfolk. The information was useful and her manner reassuring. A collection and a raffle and a sale resulted in a generous donation to a good cause. We are doing our best to stave off our own decline with involvement in matters of interest, (another craft competition requiring some imagination in progress) and healthy exercise, walks and 10 pin bowling, visits to a number of interesting venues forthcoming, and for one member at least a lot of digging and garden titivating. Our June garden meeting will be a members only event in the garden of a true plants woman, also a WI member who will throw open her garden gate on what we so hope will be a sunny evening, for the regular meeting.Back to the village hall in July when yet again we invite interested women from our area, not just the village, to drop in and enjoy our company on the 4th Wednesday of the month as usual.

Thank You Beanie Knitters We had a huge response to the request for knitters and this meant we had enough hats to cover the heads of our current members on their investiture in Aldborough Church on 1st May.PLUS we have enough for future members. THANK YOU ONE AND ALL

Aldborough Farmers Market & Sunday Cafe | Sunday 5 June, 9:30-12As many of you know, the Aldborough Farmers Market has fluctuated on a monthly basis for the past few years. Despite us trying different ways to advertise and trying to attract new stall holders, we're unable to keep new stalls for long, due to the low numbers that attend. Whilst we have our very loyal core stall holders, if we can't get more support for the market, we'll be forced to close. For a village like Aldborough, we're so fortunate to be able to hold a monthly event such as this, and with a lovely community feel, it's always a great way for people in the village to get together and have a coffee, without having to go too far! It's also a vital fundraising line for Stepping Stones which as a charity-run pre-school, has to raise over £5,000 a year to keep going.So... we really want to continue, but to do so, we need your support. There are several ways you can help us:As many of you know, the Aldborough Farmers Market has fluctuated on a monthly basis for the past few years. Dementia and Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST)Memory loss, difficulties in thinking or problem solving or difficulties communicating can be a sensitive and often worrying experience for people living with Dementia, and for their carers. At the Aylsham Care Trust (ACT), our focus is on creating a stimulating and caring environment for our clients and their carers. Our trained staff and volunteers use Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) for people living with mild to moderate Dementia. This therapy, developed at University College London, has proven to have a positive impact on people’s levels of cognition, communication and quality of life.We run small, person centred groups which are structured on a set of ‘Key Principles’ and stimulating. We also have a Conversation Group for those waiting to join one of our CST groups which is more relaxed, giving people an opportunity to meet others. There is also a weekly Activity Group.Once a month we have a Carers Group and we have recently started an Outreach Support Service aimed at giving carers time to do something else.If you would like further information and a more detailed leaflet, please contact Sarah Purdy

Alby ChurchAs part of the conditions of gaining the Heritage Lottery Grant to restore the church we

need to carry forward heritage ideas to ensure the continued use of the church for community as well as worship. We have several ideas planned which will be advertised

as they occur but we are mindful to establish an Annual Jazz Festival. Is there anyone with necessary knowledge who would volunteer to help set up such an

event starting in 2017? Please give Fr.Paul a ring on 01263 761110 to discuss. [email protected].

ERPINGHAM CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOL and NORTHREPPS COMMUNITY SCHOOLinto

BLUE SKY FEDERATION As readers will know there has been a big question mark about small rural schools and their viability. In order to address this, small schools have been encouraged to join together in a Federation with one Head Teacher and one Governing Body. This is what Erpingham and Northrepps School have done. Simon East of Erpingham School is due to retire and so Angie Hamilton, the head at Northrepps will become the head of both schools.Together, it is hoped to celebrate the unique qualities and characteristics that each school brings to the federation. It is believed they will be stronger together, broadening and enriching opportunities for all. The ethos, values, heritage and status of both schools will be respected and preserved, embracing a vibrant future. Erpingham School will continue to embrace the Christian ethosHelen Burrell, Foundation Governor.
