New Website!! Our new website is live!

Please be sure to check it out: www.indianheightsumc.org

The new site is pretty awesome and includes these features and more: useable/visible from all sizes of technology….including

cell phones, laptops, desktops and tablets A new Pastor’s Blog so Butch can reach out to us, and

to people beyond our doors via the Internet A “member’s only” spot that provides a place to put

our new member directory, minutes from various committees, etc. The password is available from Suzette in the Church Office of Ed Haffner (there is also a piece of paper in your church mailbox with the password on it).

A new calendar format. Note that all church events will be on this calendar - if you notice something missing, please let Suzette in the office know.

Wednesday Nights at Indian Heights We started a mid-week worship service in September. The service is about 30 minutes long and offers a time for prayer and reflection. These are weekly and end by 7pm so you can make it to choir or wherever you are headed next!! Rehearsals for our adult choir are Wednesdays, at 7pm. All are welcome - the only thing you need to bring is your love of sharing music as we worship God. See Cheri White with questions about music and worship!

Sunday Sermons are Online!! Beginning this September, Sunday sermons are being recorded and put up on our Youtube portal! You can access them via our new website and via our Facebook. The goal is for a link to the latest sermon to be posted on our Facebook and website on Mondays. A special thank you to Ed Haffner for his help in securing a recording device and setting this all up!!

Creative Cooking Group The Creative Cooking group will meet on Friday, October 7 at 11:30am. Please RSVP to Diane Muth. The group will gather at church. Mary Jane Hobbs, Marilyn Gaulding and Cheri White are hosting!

All Hands Workday Please reserve the morning of Saturday. October 15, in your busy schedules for an opportunity to provide some sweat equity for your church. The Trustees have scheduled their annual Fall workday for that morning and it will involve the usual general cleaning, organizing and sprucing up interior spaces. Emphasis this year will be on exterior cleanup, trimming and removal of volunteer growth around the church and parsonage. Bring the appropriate tools of choice – cleaning or yard work. We will start around 8:30 AM and will quit not later than noon. Tasks will be posted in advance so you may own a project and complete it at a time more convenient for you. Many hands make for quick work and early finish. It is always a time for fellowship, good work and – John’s donuts

AED Training An AED training will be at church on Saturday, October 22, from 9am-noon. Many of you expressed an interest in this and hopefully all of you can attend this training. The Memorial Committee is covering the $25 fee per participant. This training will equip you to use the AED at Indian Heights in response to emergencies. Please RSVP to Suzette in the Church Office; see Pastor Butch with questions.

It’s Not Worship Without Music... Music touches our hearts in indescribable ways, deepening the worship experience. On that note, submit your favorite hymn requests to Cheri White and she will do her best to work them in soon during an upcoming Sunday worship. There is a box up on the table outside the Sanctuary for this, or you can email Cheri your ideas.

All Saints Sunday All Saints Sunday is November 6 and we will ring a bell in memory of our members who have passed away since last year’s service. If you have lost a loved one and would like his/her name read during this service, please submit names and your relationship to this person to Suzette in the Church Office by Monday, October 31.

Book Club Our Book Club is reading “The Hiding Place” by Corrie Ten Boom. The group will meet at Betty Burum’s home at 1:30pm on Wednesday, October 12 to discuss this memorable story.

Experiencing the Joy of Generosity!

In a couple of weeks, we will begin a three-week

stewardship emphasis titled Experiencing the Joy of Generosity. This will be an exciting and beneficial three weeks of sermon messages and lay presentations. We believe this program will be a blessing to those who already are experiencing the joy of being generous with the gifts God has given to them, and we hope and pray that this effort will help many more experience the joy that comes from giving faithfully and generously.

When we give to God through giving to our church and others, we experience one of the true joys of being Christians. Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). God doesn’t need our gifts, but he asks us to give them. God accepts and uses them and gives us joy in sharing them. As we respond to God’s love for us by giving back to him part of what he’s given to us, he reacts by giving us even more. “Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you” (Luke 6:38). Although we don’t give so that we will receive God’s blessings, God’s Word promises us that, when we give faithfully and willingly, we will receive an abundance of spiritual blessings and, for some, material blessings as well.

Have you ever wondered why you are left with such a joyful feeling when you are able to give a gift to your church

or to help a person in need? The answer to that question may be rooted in us as Christians who are being recreated in the image of God. To be made in God’s image means we are made to be like him whose nature is to give. Giving helps us feel fulfilled as we reflect God’s nature. Although the image of God was lost by sin, as those converted by faith in Jesus, we “have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator” (Colossians 3:10). Our Creator empowers us to give joyfully to our church and others according to his will. With this attitude of joyful gratitude, God keeps us close to him, and others see his image through us.

Our pursuit for fulfillment and joy culminates in the discovery that we receive those things when, by God’s grace, we respond with eagerness to God’s directive to give. Like David, we exclaim, “But who [are we]…that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we give you” (1 Chronicles 29; 14).

We hope and pray that the emphasis Experiencing the Joy of Generosity will be a blessing to you and your family!

Please continue to be in prayer throughout the length of this special prayer event, whether during a worship service, organized prayer vigil, with your family and friends, or in private prayer time. With our presidential election on November 8, and the many issues our nation - and world - faces, we are turning our needs and concerns to God for His ultimate guidance and protection.

All are welcome to pray with us at Indian Heights United Methodist Church. 10211 Nall Avenue in Overland Park, Kansas, 66207

May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you! May the nations be glad and rejoice; for you judge the peoples with fairness, you guide the nations upon the earth.

Psalms 67:4-5

Give praise to God every day. Don’t be afraid to tell others about the many blessings you have received, and share your faith when the opportunity arises. “No one who lights a lamp hides it away or places it [under a bushel basket], but on a lampstand so that those who enter might see the light.” (Luke 11:33)

Happy 50th to Indian Heights UMC!!

We are celebrating 50 years in 2017!

The Administrative Council has been charged with the 50th Anniversary Celebration of our church and a Task Force has been set up

since there is much to do to make this a truly awesome event! We will be celebrating our 50th on April 2, 2017. We need help as we compile an invitation list to include all Indian Heights Charter Members, former pastors, etc. If you have address, phone number or emails for people you feel should be invited, please provide this info. to Betty Burum or Carol Grantham.

First Sunday Pounding Please bring non-perishable items the first Sunday of each month for Cross-Lines Community food pantry. The first Sunday of the month is called “pounding” Sunday since we often bring in pounds of food. It is also the Sunday we traditionally celebrate Holy Communion.

Did You Know Indian Heights Has a

Spanish Ministry?? Alice Brown has started a Spanish ministry at Indian Heights. It is called “Heaven for All Nations” and gathers on Wednesdays (9:30am-noon) and Saturdays (4-7pm), as well as for other events in between. The group meets to pray, worship, have a Bible Study and socialize in a Christian

environment. There are young children attending as well as adults at this time; all are welcome (Alice is fluent in English and Spanish). We are searching for Spanish Bibles and Christian literature - if you know where we can get some at a good price, please contact Suzette in the Church Office.
