JVS Staffers Receive Highest Honors from Arc of Oakland County

Two JVS staff members were honored in April for their dedication and service to the community with 2018 Dove Awards from the Arc of Oakland County. Leah Rosenbaum, JVS president and CEO, received the Janet and Paul MacCormack Lifetime Achievement Award. Lydia Gray, direc-tor of Rehabilitation Services, received the Presi-dent’s Award.

“This recognition is well deserved for the mean-ingful work that both Leah and Lydia have contrib-uted not only to the agency but also to the lives of the many people we serve,” said Paul Blatt, JVS executive vice president and COO.

During her tenure at JVS, Rosenbaum has been instrumental in creating innovative programs that have led the field nationally in rehabilitation ser-vices, workforce development and senior day ser-vices, keeping JVS Detroit on the cutting edge of social service programming.

Gray is a leader in advocating for community-based employment for people with significant disabilities. She was a pioneer in the use of work trials as a bet-ter tool than paper and pencil testing to determine readiness for employment. She has also been in-strumental in developing transition programs for high school students with disabilities.

Local Filmmaker Includes Brown Center in New DocumentaryLocal filmmaker Keith Famie tells how his dad died of Alzheimer’s disease. As he watched his father’s memory slip away, he vowed to do what he could to help other families facing the same fate. Once a celebrity chef, Famie currently produces documentaries that explore difficult personal and social issues. His next film fulfills the promise he made during his father’s journey with dementia.

“Those on the Front Lines of Alzheimer’s and Dementia” will be released through Detroit PBS. The film introduces people on the front lines – neuroscientists, clinicians, doctors, care partners and people living with dementia – and explores cutting-edge research, disease-modifying treatments, care approaches and preventive strategies.

Some of the filming was done in the JVS Dorothy and Peter Brown Adult Day Program, where staff members are trained to focus on the unique abilities that remain intact throughout the progression of dementia and to find ways to connect and interact. The Brown Program, offered by JVS in Southfield and Jewish Senior Life in West Bloomfield, also provides support and training for care partners.

“Those on the Front Lines of Alzheimer’s and Dementia” will premiere on June 3at the Royal Oak Music Theatre with a community celebration and an opportunity to support the Brown Center.

Remembering Albert AscherAlbert Ascher served as the executive director of JVS for nearly 20 years until 1991. He was a passionate and strong leader among his peers of vocational service executives from across the country. Truly ahead of his time, Mr. Ascher helped to create the backbone of ser-vices that made it possible for people who were chronically underserved to overcome chal-lenges and find their paths to personal success.

“Al’s ethics, commitment and professionalism were at the core of his leadership,” said Leah Rosenbaum, JVS presi-dent and CEO. “He advocated for people needing a voice and he created forward-looking services that continue today – strengthening our Jewish community and the community at large.”

Mr. Ascher will be greatly missed, but never forgotten for the lasting impact he had on the agency, the Jewish communal service field and metropolitan Detroit.

Mark Reuss, executive vice president of Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain, General Motors Company, will headline the 21st annual Strictly Business Networking and Awards Luncheon, which raises funds for unemployed workers. Serving as hon-orary chair and keynote speaker, Reuss will welcome an anticipated crowd of 700 business and community leaders to the luncheon at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 14, at the MGM Grand in Detroit.

Reuss leads the design, engineering, safety, quality, research and development, advanced vehicle technol-ogy and program management of General Motors cars, trucks and crossovers around the world.

From 2009-2013, Reuss was president of General Mo-tors North America, responsible for GM’s performance, manufacturing, portfolio and dealer network. Under his watch, GM’s North America region produced consis-tent profits and improved margins during a product re-naissance featuring a slate of award-winning vehicles. A mechanical engineer, Reuss began his GM career as a student intern in 1983. He has held numerous engi-neering and management positions, including chief en-gineer of GM’s large luxury vehicles and manufacturing body shop tooling launches.

“Mark Reuss was born and raised in metro Detroit and has shown a deep commitment to revitalizing the re-gion,” said Beth Gotthelf, Strictly Business co-chair. “He’s a top executive in a remarkable company that was founded in metropolitan Detroit and still remains head-quartered here. We’re thrilled he will share his insight with us at Strictly Business.”

In addition to Reuss’ speech, event-goers will also hear from recipients of the 2018 JVS Business Leadership and Rising Entrepreneur awards and will meet individu-als whose lives have been transformed by the work of JVS.n

WDIV-TV anchor Karen Drew introduces a feature on caregiver sup-port filmed at the JVS Dorothy and Peter Brown Jewish Community Adult Day Program.

The Dorothy and Peter Brown Jewish Community Adult Day Program was featured in a WDIV-TV segment on the importance of caregiver respite, especially during holiday times.

“Respite is necessary for caregivers, particularly those (caring for loved ones) with memory impairment,” said reporter Paula Tutman. “It is critical that they get some rest from caregiving. They’re able to recharge, regroup and rethink so they can be the best for their loved ones.”

WDIV shared tips from the Brown Center to help care partners and their loved ones enjoy holiday time, including the following:

• SET LIMITS. It’s okay to say no to a gathering if it will be too stressful for your loved one with dementia or for you. Decide which holiday traditions are most important and focus on those that you most enjoy.

• ASK FOR HELP. If you are having company in your own home, be sure to have someone to help care for or visit with your loved while you are in the kitchen or entertaining guests. Friends and family often want to help; let someone do your dishes or laundry if they offer.

The unemployment rate is at its lowest in 17 years. It’s all good, right? Well, partly. If I called your HR department and offered an experienced worker who has an understanding of your industry, a man-agement and project leadership background, and immediate availability — would you hire the person?

We’re told daily that Metro Detroit is experiencing the low-est unemployment rate in 17 years. But those numbers only tell part of the story. We’re also hearing that companies in Detroit and across the country are having a difficult time finding enough qualified people to fill available positions. They are overlooking a valuable segment of the workforce who’s ready to work now.

Last year alone, employment specialists at JVS assisted more than 2,500 job seekers. Many of them are long-term unem-ployed (job seekers who have been actively looking for work for over six months), and they are not only ready to work NOW, they have been ready.

Our experience mirrors national statistics that show a clear correlation between age and long-term unemployment. Half of the job seekers we serve are long-term unemployed people over age 50 with more than 20 years’ experience.

Many mature workers have been left on the sidelines because employers assume that hiring younger people is cheaper. But is it really? Post-recession, mature workers may be in a position to make salary concessions if it means becoming a valued member of a team and being able to contribute to a company’s success. A large percentage of these mature long-term unemployed have taken classes, like those offered through JVS, or volunteered with nonprofits to keep relevant while they’ve been unemployed. Often requiring less training than their younger counterparts, they are ready to be produc-tive on Day One.

“Employers can gain tremendous benefit from the ‘boomer work ethic,’ ” says Karen Gutman, JVS director of career ser-vices. “This is a group of people who, because of their stage in life, generally experience less down time due to family and personal commitments. They no longer have child-rearing responsibilities, they’re loyal (read: less turnover) and they show up to work on time.”

We, as a community, need to shift our views on “how old is too old” to remain engaged, productive and valued in the workplace. Let’s not automatically write off mature workers or place them in the “department store greeter” box. Hire them. Let them show you what they can do.

LEAH ROSENBAUM, President and CEO of JVS

OP-ED PUBLISHED IN THE DETROIT NEWS, MARCH 7, 2018

Don’t discount the value of older workers

To Friends of JVS and to Our Community:

As 2017 drew to a close, one out of every five unemployed people in Michigan had been out of work six months or longer, according to the Bureau of Labor Market Informa-tion. By sharp comparison, back in 2000, only one in 20 out-of-work individuals were considered long-term unemployed.

Further, there’s a clear correlation between age and long-term unemployment. A 2015 AARP Public Policy Institute report showed that a stunning 45 percent of unemployed workers over the age of 55 are long-term unemployed.

Even though unemployment rates are at their lowest in many years, the lower rates don’t reflect the reality that older job seekers are still facing: continued unemployment, underem-ployment and discrimination in the job market.

Many of these individuals have been looking for work since the Great Recession. While some simply gave up (and are no longer counted in unemployment figures), others have gone back to school, taken classes or volunteered with nonprofits to keep themselves relevant until opportunities come.

For older workers in particular, we offer specialized career ser-vices to help them overcome barriers to employment. With the generous support of our community, JVS is committed to helping all job seekers reach their full potential.

Peggy loves her new smile, and she is thrilled about showing it off.

A very special team provided extensive dental treatment to restore Peggy’s smile and her confidence after many years of extraction-only dentistry under Medicaid.

Over a nine-month period, Peggy sought treatment through the Dental Co-Teacher Project, a collaboration of JVS Tri-County Dental Health, Community Living Servic-es, Inc., and the University of Detroit Mer-cy. The project values people with special needs as “co-teachers” who contribute to the experiences and clinical education of student dentists at Detroit Mercy.

“The Co-Teacher Project is increasing dental students’ competence and comfort in treating adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” said Karen Trompeter, director, JVS Tri-County Dental Health. “If students graduate confident in their abilities, it will increase access to dental care in the community.”

Before participating in the Co-Teacher Project, Peggy had difficulty eating and was very self-conscious about her missing teeth. During her treatment, Peggy’s teeth were X-rayed, evaluated and cleaned. Dr. Cheri Newman, DDS,

an adjunct faculty member of the school who oversees the dental students in the Co-Teacher Project, thought Peggy would be able to wear partial dentures, so the school asked Medicaid to approve a waiver for partials rather than complete dentures.

Peggy was happy because she didn’t want to lose any more teeth. Today, Peggy loves being active and looking good. She works part time shredding paper and sells candles through her micro-enterprise. She also enjoys making jewelry, and at

each dental appointment, she models her latest bracelets and necklaces for all to admire.

For too many adults with developmen-tal disabilities, a healthy smile is elusive. While people with disabilities often receive Medicaid dental benefits, the program doesn’t pay for all dental services, and Medicaid payments often fall short of the costs. That means it can be hard to find a dentist willing and able to do the work. In Michigan, coverage includes basic dental care, such as cleanings, fill-ings, extractions and dentures. Specialty care, such as root canals and crowns that might help save a person’s teeth, are not covered.

The JVS Tri-County Dental Health pro-gram helps connect people who have Medicaid–and those without insurance–with dental professionals who are will-ing to provide care. If you’d like to help others like Peggy, visit www.jvsdet.org/GiveDental-Health. n

“The love of my life was gone. He was our joy.”In 2006, Paula Perelman faced the dev-astating loss of her husband, Shelly. Looking for a fresh start, Paula began a new corporate sales job. Soon after, the Great Recession hit. She lost the job and everything else — all of her savings and her house.

“It was nearly impossible to find work because everyone was getting laid off in 2008,” said Paula. “Competition for jobs was extremely high.”

Buoyed by friends’ encouragement, Paula began conducting courses in meditation and journaling, a practice she and Shelly had shared. She found that focusing her energies on building a new business was therapeutic.

“My business provided what I needed,” she said. “But, years later, when I was feeling stronger, I wanted to get back into the corporate world.”

Paula hit one obstacle after another in an unsuccessful job search. Then grandchildren came along, creating an opportunity to help her family by caring for them. When the children reached school age, Paula needed to find work.

This time around, she was in her late 50s, and the job search seemed even more daunting than before. Paula was on the internet day and night trying to find work. She considered going back to school. She thought about moving up north for a fresh start.

“I felt like I didn’t have what the world wanted today,” she said. “Then I found JVS. It was an answer to my prayers.”

Paula flourished in the JVS Women to Work program. Through a process of uncovering marketable skills, updating her resume and practicing interviewing skills, her confidence rebounded.

“You learn a lot about yourself,” she said. “It all gets lost in the shuffle of feeling you’re not worthy. JVS took all of that angst—all of that illusion—and wiped it away.”

Determined and empowered, Paula started anew. She accepted a position at Lowe’s as a customer service associ-ate and “plant waterer” utilizing her agri-culture degree and connecting with her love of gardening.

“I put my pride and ego out of the way so I could get my foot in the door,” she said. “I loved it. I had morning hours and was happy every day. I couldn’t quite support myself, but I was confident that it would take me somewhere.”

It did.

Paula was soon promoted to a position in home design, and she was able to transfer to Marquette.

“Going through Women to Work remind-ed me of my power, my experience, my abilities and who I am,” she said.

JVS honored Paula’s accomplish-ments with the 2018 JVS Women to Work Award at the recent Trade Secrets event. n

JVS took all of that angst — all of that illusion — and wiped it away.”

This year’s “Comfy, Cozy Cares” theme celebrated the homespun warmth of a caring community. We received a vast array of donated products and gift certificates from local businesses and items contributed by the JVS staff, including food, artwork, household items and jewelry. Donated items were placed in a raffle or silent auction. In total, the Cares Campaign raised over $35,000. Our thanks go to the Cares Committee for organizing all of the fundraising events and to the individuals and companies below who donated items:

Cares CampaignJVS thanks all who supported the JVS Cares Campaign, an annual staff fundraiser to support JVS, the Jewish Federation of Metro-politan Detroit and United Way for Southeastern Michigan.

I first became involved with JVS through a friend who was on the JVS Board of Trustees. Through my involvement with a local fitness studio, Fuse45, I

helped expand a fitness training program for individuals with dis-abilities (FuseForce). This initiative brought me to JVS.

I had always been aware of some of the programs and services pro-vided by JVS, but had no idea of the magnitude or scope of what JVS offers. Being passionate about physical fitness and its positive ef-fects on people’s lives, I wanted to bring group fitness opportunities to people with disabilities. JVS has been a great partner in helping with the success of FuseForce.

When I was first introduced to JVS, I took a tour of the facility and was blown away by what I saw. JVS touches lives in so many ways. From helping people with

disabilities have a better quality of life to providing a dignified and safe place for seniors who are experiencing dementia to helping job seekers become self-sufficient – JVS makes a difference. That is why I choose to support JVS.

I encourage anyone who wants to make a difference in the quality of people’s lives to give a gift of support to JVS. I have personally seen the positive impact of my gifts and how JVS helps to make people feel better about themselves while providing them with the tools to deal successfully with life challenges. n
