When his medical insurance cut his access to metha- done, Gerry turned to selling drugs to fund his addiction. “I went to treatment nine times but I couldn’t stay sober on the streets.” “Selling got me busted for the first time in my life. I ended up with some jail time and about 19 hours of community service. I had been to Ministry with Community before but choosing to do my community service there really pulled me in. I did my 19 required hours and knew I wanted to stay on as a volunteer.” “Keeping busy at MwC and surrounding myself with the people there who were clean and living a positive life helped me work on sobriety. I started taking care of myself and going to anger management, InterAct and my doctor’s appointments. Now I’ve been clean since March 9, 2015.” When asked what services at MwC helped the most, Gerry says, “The people. The Social Workers, the staff, the volunteers and especially Prudence McCabe (a long-time, regular volunteer). She’s one of my favorites. I thought she was a staff member at first because she knew so much and helped so much. The meals, showers, laundry, even just the TV room or playing cards- just having a place to go was really good.” Now that Gerry has had nearly a year of sobriety, his capacity to give back has grown immensely. Every day at 3:00pm at Ministry with Community you can hear a vacuum cleaner start up. The familiar whirring sound indicates that Gerry has begun his self- chosen cleaning duties. These duties include thoroughly vacuum- ing the carpeted areas behind the front desk, the locker room, the back hallway and the TV room. Trash is taken out, mugs are picked up and returned to the kitchen, broken things are fixed, smiles and hellos are given. It should also be noted that he is often wheeling his oxygen tank behind him while he completes these tasks. “My reward is the ‘thank you’ I get.” A ‘thank you’ doesn’t seem like enough. We are truly grateful for all the ways that Gerry gives back to Ministry with Community. Gerry getting ready to start vacuuming behind the front desk.

Keeping Busy Staying Clean

March 2016

e mission of Ministry with Community is to empower people to make positive life changes.

“Something was telling me that I wasn’t going to make it through another winter.”

Gerry had spent the previous few years living on the streets and sleeping under bridges and highway overpasses and struggling with addiction. As another Michigan Winter approached, he knew he needed to change.

Gerry had stayed away from alcohol for nearly 20 years but was still working with a doctor to quit opioids. When his medical insurance cut his access to metha-done, Gerry turned to selling drugs to fund his addiction. “I went to treatment nine times but I couldn’t stay sober on the streets.”

“Selling got me busted for the first time in my life. I ended up with some jail time and about 19 hours of community service. I had been to Ministry with Community before but choosing to do my community service there really pulled me in. I did my 19 required hours and knew I wanted to stay

on as a volunteer.”

“Keeping busy at MwC and surrounding myself with the people there who were clean and living a positive life helped me work on sobriety. I started taking care of myself and going to anger management, InterAct and my doctor’s appointments. Now I’ve been clean since March 9, 2015.”

When asked what services at MwC

helped the most, Gerry says, “The people. The Social Workers, the staff, the volunteers and especially Prudence McCabe (a long-time, regular volunteer). She’s one of my favorites. I thought she was a staff member at first because she knew so much and helped so much. The meals, showers, laundry, even just the TV room or playing cards- just having a place to go was really good.”

Now that Gerry has had nearly a year of sobriety, his capacity to give back has grown immensely. Every day at 3:00pm at Ministry with Community you can hear a vacuum cleaner start up. The familiar whirring sound indicates that Gerry has begun his self-chosen cleaning duties. These duties include thoroughly vacuum-ing the carpeted areas behind the front desk, the locker room, the back hallway and the TV room. Trash is taken out, mugs are picked up and returned to the kitchen, broken things are fixed, smiles and hellos are given. It should also be noted that he is often wheeling his oxygen tank behind him while he completes these tasks.

“My reward is the ‘thank you’ I get.”

A ‘thank you’ doesn’t seem like enough. We are truly grateful for all the ways that Gerry gives back to Ministry with Community.

New Building UpdateIf you haven’t been by 500 N. Edwards Street lately – don’t delay!

The progress on our new building is remarkable. Miller Davis is

keeping everything on schedule and the mild winter has been a

terrific help. We love hearing the enthusiastic feedback we’re

getting from members, volunteers, and donors who are keeping a

close eye on the construction.

We anticipate that we will be up and running in the new 25,000

square foot facility by mid-summer. Please keep your ears open in

the coming months for more information on Grand Opening

celebrations. We are excited to share our new home with the

extraordinarily generous community that has made it possible.

Together we will have a safe, respectful, and uplifting space to

rebuild lives!

Walt Goodrich awaiting his next appointment.

Sponsor-a-Meal

Walt Goodrich has an impressive history of helping others. His professional accomplishments include thirty years of private Psychotherapy practice, social work and supervision of other therapists. His volunteer background lists experience with YMCA, The American Cancer Society, Senior Olympics, West Michigan Cancer Center and now, Ministry with Community.

Walt became familiar with MwC through his work with other not-for-profits in the area but it was an article in Encore magazine featuring our organization that prompted him to contact us to learn more.

We were on the lookout for skilled volunteers when Walt contacted our Program Director, Christine Wine. Walt was willing to help in any way but after their first meeting, Christine felt that Walt would be a great fit to volunteer with our social work team.

Walt now meets with members one-on-one for counseling and mentoring. It’s a great use of his skills but it’s also a huge benefit to our members. “It’s free and confidential,” Walt says. “They can come in and I can see them without the red tape or cost often associated with a private practice. It’s a casual setting where they can feel comfortable to talk about whatever is on their mind.”

Christine says, “It’s a pleasure to work with him. He is a great fit for us. He is open, friendly and welcoming with our members.” And we all agree that he is a great addition to the MwC family.

If you have a special skill that could translate to a volunteer opportunity, please contact our Volunteer and Development Coordinator, Ali Kole at 269.343.6073 x15 or at [email protected].

Sam’s Bike ProgramMinistry with Community is currently accepting donations of bikes that are in good working order. Chefs battling it out on stage.2015 Winner Scott Ward of 1858 Timeless Catering.

Yes, it’s been 10 years since John Korycki and Judy Sarkozy first put their minds and hearts together to create the fun yet profound Chefs Against Hunger. As the premier chef event in the area, this fast-paced competition puts local chefs head-to-head in creating a 3-course meal within 45 minutes, using whatever might be in the “cupboard” at Ministry with Community that day, without knowing these ingredients until the moment they step out on the floor. Past years’ “secret ingredients” have included beet flakes, habanero peppers, and cereal! With rollicking blow by blow commentary provided by Judy, camaraderie among the chefs and local celebrity sous chefs, it is a unique opportunity to learn about MwC's food program and the 130,000 meals we serve each year.

Chefs Against Hunger exists to bring a higher awareness of the challenge of food access in the area, and the role MwC plays in helping to alleviate it. Within our community there are still many people struggling to know where their next meal will come from, often having to make painful decisions of food vs. paying rent or other life needs.

We have worked hard over the past several years to build a broader spectrum of menus for our meals at MwC – to include more fresh local produce, vegetarian and vegan options, lower fat/higher taste meals that not only satisfy hunger, but may also evoke memories of more comforting times, all served with love and respect. Besides the need for creative budgeting, this can only happen through a strong union of donations of food by wonderful local stores and restaurants, our Sponsor-a-Meal program, our corps of beloved volunteers, and ongoing financial support.

Please join us on Tuesday, March 22nd from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Cityscape Events Center for this fierce but friendly competition to raise awareness of fair access to food!
