Certification UPDATE Spring 092

FROM THE PRESIDENT

A Busy Year for Everyone!I hope everyone is having an enjoyable summer. It’s a great time to spend time with friends and family. I hope it is not too oppressively hot where you are.

This has been the most active year in the 35 year history of BONENT. Since the passage of the new Medicare regulations that, among other things, require that all current patient care technologists be nationally certified by April 2010 and that all newly trained patient care technologists be nationally certified within 18 months of starting in dialysis, things have been busy.

Only BONENT Has CBT Exams!Starting in October 2008, the BONENT exam became the only national certification exam that was available by computer based testing (CBT). CBT allows candidates to take the BONENT exam at any of hundreds of testing centers throughout the country and internationally. On the BONENT website (www.BONENT.org), there are instructions on how to apply to take a BONENT exam by CBT and a link to the list of available testing centers. The testing company that BONENT uses for our exams is adding new testing centers almost daily. So, if there is not a CBT center near you, let us know and hopefully there will be soon.

There are also a record number of pencil/paper exam (PPE) sites being set up. The BONENT website has a frequently updated list of sites as they are approved.

Nursing Exam Length & Time Reduced In order to make the switch to include the option of CBT, the certified hemodialysis nurse (CHN) exam has been shortened to 150 questions and 3 hours to match the other 2 BONENT exams. This will not impact the quality of the CHN exam.

If you or your dialysis clinic needs to schedule an exam site, the host form application can be printed from the BONENT website. We require that at least 5 candidates sign up for the paper/pencil exam or the site and/or date will need to be rescheduled.

We Need You to Join a CommitteeBONENT is always in need of help from certified members. Most of our committees could use more members that have even 1 or 2 hours per month to help get the work of BONENT done. We are presently looking for individuals interested in writing new questions for any of the BONENT exams. We need members to help staff the BONENT booth at regional and national conventions. We are expanding our roster of regional representatives. To qualify you need to be a certified BONENT member in good standing, be willing to host 2-3 exams per year and promote BONENT in your area. If you are interested, contact the committee chair for which ever committee you want to join. They are all listed on the BONENT website.

In closing, BONENT is a volunteer non-profit organization that is only as strong as its membership. We need as many certified members as possible actively involved in the work of BONENT, especially over the next 12 months while we get all PCT’s certified. Remember it takes the support of the membership to keep BONENT as the premier certifying organiza-tion in Nephrology. Thanks for being part of this great organization.

Certification UPDATE Spring 09Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology 3

BOARD MEMBER PROFILE INTERVIEW

How long have you been the BONENT Executive Director? I took over as Executive Director in February 2006, the same time that the BONENT office moved to Washington DC.

Do you have a background in dialysis? My background is in association management and marketing. I have been Executive Director of four other healthcare associations. I have had a long career providing expertise in advertising, mar-keting and publishing to many companies and association clients.

How many staff do you oversee? There are five other people who work on BONENT activities – three involved in membership, certification and recertification, one in accounting and one designer for the web site and marketing materials.

What are your main responsibilities? My main task is to ensure that the BONENT Executive Office and

related activities run smoothly. This includes setting up exams (around the world), processing applications, testing and mailing membership packets to newly certified members.

Just as important as the process above, is ensuring that all staff provide a friendly, service atmosphere when BONENT members and exam applicants contact our office. I am also the main contact from the office with the Board of Directors. They meet twice a year and discuss many operational issues. It is my role to see that any new measures adopted by the board are implemented efficiently into the daily office procedures.

What are the most important changes at BONENT in your tenure? Looking back over my three and a half years, I am very proud of turning the BONENT web site into one that provides all the information for the exam process and recertification. And, watch this summer for new web features allowing online fee payment and personal data updates (see page 1 article).

We also enhanced the BONENT image with improved marketing materials – brochure, flyers, candidate handbook and newsletter. In October 2008, we implemented Computer Based Testing (CBT), which has been extremely popular with our applicants.
