Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities Mission Statement

“Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities is a nonprofit, membership-based organization, dedicated to the advancement of the arts and humanities. We strive for quality programs by nurturing creative ideas, fostering community participation, facilitating professional excellence in member offerings, and ensuring inclusive access for residents of Broomfield and surrounding communities.”

Back by popular demand, the Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities (BCAH) “Holiday Photos with Santa” event will return to the historic Brunner Farmhouse on November 30 from 11-2 p.m.! While this a holiday fundraising event for BCAH that allows you to give and get back, it is also a wonderful, low key event for children, grandchildren, groups and businesses to take photos with (or without) Santa inside of the farmhouse. Your exclusive pre-reserved time slot allows you to avoid long lines and wait times and gives you ample time with the big guy. Santa Gerry will be eager to listen to everyone’s Christmas wishes and smile big for your holiday photo. Plans for this event include front porch activities, like holiday music, crafts to keep the children’s creativity flowing, and hot chocolate to keep you warm while you wait for your photo time. Reserve your spot for your family or group photo at the historic Brunner Farmhouse for $25. There are only 50 slots available. To sign-up for a time slot, you can visit http://www.SignupGenius.com/ and search for “Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities,” call 303-460-6800, or send an email to [email protected]. After your reservation, you can order photos and other items through http://www.CaseWorks.SmugMug.com. Reserve your slot today!

Reviews from families who attended last year’s event:

Loved the Photos with Santa event. No line, liked that we could reserve a time slot. — Arrin Ulane Wanerus

We absolutely loved the Santa event put on by the Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities! What a great organization in our community! — Alice Hanson

Broomfield Civic Chorus Events

BCAH and The Tau Zero Foundation partnered to bring the first free Science+Art event to fulfill BCAH’s goal of adding science programming to its list of outreach events and children’s activities. Attendees had the opportunity to look through high-powered, large telescopes at the moon and Jupiter and its moons, which were provided by Michael Nothem, a student astronomer from CU’s Fiske Planetarium and Rhonda Stevenson of the Tau Zero Foundation. Michael also brought meteorites from the planetarium’s collection. The feature portion of this event was the live broadcast from two respected science and space science experts, Janet Irving from Janet’s Planet and Terry Hancock from the Grand Mesa Observatory. Janet is a renowned speaker and science expert who presents engaging videos geared towards children and youth, and speaks at conferences and schools across the country. For this event, Janet delivered an educational presentation on female astronauts and discussed who might be the female astronauts chosen to walk on the moon. Terry is a famous astrophotographer and astronomer, whose work is focused on deep space objects. Terry took real-time snapshots of the moon (see photo at right) and spoke to the great work they are doing at the observatory. Broomfield Art Guild artists staged Plein Air painting sessions of the moon rise. The Gizmo Dojo displays makerspace creations. Children crafted moon rocks out of clay and entered drawings for fun, science-related prizes. Some children also played soccer on the lawn. One mother remarked that this event was perfect for her family as one daughter loved the telescopes and the other stood in awe of the painting process. Attendees inquired about when the next event would be held. Please consider donating any amount to this program so that we may continue to expand innovative Science+Art programming. You can donate online at http://www.ArtsinBroomfield.org or send a check along with the donation form (p. 15) to BCAH, PO Box 681, Broomfield, CO 80038. Thank you for making these programs accessible for all, because creativity and exploration should be a part of everyone’s lives.

In October, the Renny Fagan and Michele Majeune Family Fund provided a scholarship for BCAH’s Executive Director, Keri Dillingham, to attend the 2019 Colorado Nonprofit Conference in Denver. It was a two-day event of workshops, speaker events, and luncheons with a roundtable talk between Renny Fagan, CEO of the Colorado Nonprofit Association, and Dr. James R. Doty, MD, and author of “Into the Magic Shop; A Neurosurgeon's Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart.” Education-based scholarships are important to the professional growth of BCAH’s leadership. Learning from industry professionals allows BCAH’s leaders to implement new strategies that benefit the operation and management of BCAH and its programming. Thank you, Renny Fagan and Michele Majeune Family Fund, for your generosity and support!

Broomfield Spellbinders to Participate in "Telebration"

"Telebration" is a worldwide celebration of storytelling. This international event occurs annually in November. Thousands of storytellers and listeners gather on every continent, except Antarctica, to celebrate the joys of storytelling. As part of this event, Broomfield Spellbinders will tell stories at Mountain View Elementary School in Broomfield on November 21. Every class from preschool through fifth grade will hear a story told by a Spellbinder on that day. Spellbinders’ mission is to enhance literacy, encourage character development, and build intergenerational community through the art of oral story telling. Spellbinder volunteers TELL (do not read) many kinds of stories from folktales to legends to fairy tales. They receive training and support in their local chapter. Most Spellbinders tell regularly in a specific classroom. The teachers say the Spellbinders program enhances students' imagination, creativity, and visualization, as well as their listening skills and ability to pay attention. For a better understanding of Spellbinders, visit http://www.Spellbinders.org/Broomfield. Interested in becoming a Spellbinder? Please contact Kay Landers by sending an email to [email protected].

BAG meets on the second Tuesday of the month at the Broomfield Senior Center. Guys and Dolls Comes to the Broomfield Auditorium

BackStory Theatre Presents Guys and Dolls November 22 & 23 | 7 p.m. November 24 | 2 p.m. Broomfield Auditorium: 3 Community Park Rd. Tickets: http://www.BackStoryTheatre.org/tickets Tickets through November 4: $16 for adults, $10 for seniors/children (plus processing fees) Tickets after November 4: $20 for adults, $13 for seniors/children (plus processing fees) Youth actors from BackStory Theatre will take center stage this November in the 1950's classic, Guys and Dolls. In this iconic story of unlikely love in New York City, Guys and Dolls tells of con-man Nathan Detroit's efforts to fund his illegal, but notorious, crap game. Nathan bets high-rolling gambler Sky Masterson that he can't take the "doll" of Nathan's choosing on a date to Havana. When Nathan chooses uptight Evangelist Sergeant Sarah Brown, Sky thinks he's been duped, but he's in for even more of a surprise when he falls in love with her! Voted best musical in 1950, Guys and Dolls features some of Frank Loesser's most memorable tunes, including classic "Luck Be a Lady." By opening night, the cast, who are youth actors aged 8-18, will have practiced hundreds of hours in preparation for this show. On Friday, BackStory Theatre will once again offer a free performance to almost 300 students and chaperones from Broomfield schools. According to Executive Director, Mary Wilkie, “It’s important to us that our live theatre programs are accessible to everyone in our community. This has always been a critical part of BackStory’s mission.” This free program would not be possible without financial backing from Broomfield’s Health and Human Services, Broomfield Community Foundation, the Science & Cultural Facilities District and 100 Women Who Care in Broomfield, as well as corporate sponsorships from companies like Zayo and Blinds Couture. With BackStory Theatre’s long history of providing theatre education for young people in Broomfield, this and other fully staged productions not only provide an opportunity for youth to showcase their hard work and accomplishments, but performances also provide affordable and high-quality live theatre opportunities right here in Broomfield. BackStory Theatre is a Broomfield-based 501(c)(3) organization, which, through its BackStory Theatre Academy, BackStory Youth Theatre, and BackStory Youth Leadership Program, provides affordable theatre education and performance opportunities to local children, adults, and families. Building from the belief that performing arts should be an integral part of every thriving community, BackStory Theatre strives to make performing arts programs accessible to all members of our community. Experience, adaptive needs, identity, and economic ability should never be a barrier to experiencing the power and joy of theatre! For questions about this production or BackStory Theatre, call 720-263-0836 or send an email to [email protected].

Christmas on Screen and Stage

Eco Art Creators (EAC) creates unique and beautiful art using disposables. The possibilities are infinite. Each disposable can be used like the traditional art medium for creating: 2D or 3D art, crafts, fashions, realistic, abstract, or Renewable art, etc. The disposables are transformed into a great benefit to the environment because it lessens pollution, maintains and expands the beauty of our Dear Mother Earth. We have used many different disposable items to create beautiful art and we are only scraping the surface. We teach classes on the subject, which stimulates our creativity, which is the most valuable attribute that we have as human beings. Featured at right is a picture of a renewable art created with disposables. The title of this piece is "The Base” (size: 11 x 5 sq.ft). It was created with the following disposables: carpet, popsicle sticks, wrapping paper and cardboard. Currently, EAC is displaying a renewable art piece using popsicle sticks at the Westminster Library. EAC exhibits art from disposables in several locations around Broomfield, including libraries, banks, restaurants, City Hall, BCAH, and the 1stBank Center. EAC has a pending possibility for a permanent spot in the Broomfield Recreation and Senior Center, which is under renovation. Also, EAC is in contact with the City & County of Broomfield about the inclusion of art in the Broomfield Civic Center development and proposed use by EAC. For more information, visit http://www.EcoArtCreators.org, send an email to Aura Liesveld at [email protected], or call Aura at 303-465-3675.

BCAH is thrilled to welcome The Gizmo Dojo as one of its new member groups! The Gizmo Dojo is a 501(c)3 member-driven makerspace serving Broomfield and the greater North Denver area. Here is a snapshot of the makerspace offered by Mia Sherman of The Gizmo Dojo: “We offer a non-profit community space for makers, tinkerers, thinkers, artists, entrepreneurs, and innovators of all backgrounds and ages. Our mission is to offer a single space filled with the tools you wish you had and the people who have the knowledge and skill to use them. If you can envision it, we want to help you make it happen! We are a fun and welcoming place to come together and bring fantastic creations to life. Some of our meetups have included learning about Arduino, knitting, sewing, 3D printers, Linux, and making chainmaille, as well as attending Maker Faires all over Colorado and visiting with our neighbor makerspaces. Our tools include a laser cutter, CNC router, extensive woodshop and electronics workstations, multiple 3D printers, and a textile area including a sewing machine and two rigid-heddle looms. The communities built around makerspaces are typically filled with makers with many different fields of expertise. That expertise is shared among the members through classes and workshops, as well as through informal hangouts. Makers themselves come in many shapes and sizes, and makers may not even know they are makers until they are given the opportunity to create something! Lots of Makerspaces are home to entrepreneurs who are starting their own businesses creating brand new products. The community will include makers from all ages and capabilities, all sharing the common goal of wanting to have fun and make things.” Visit The Gizmo Dojo on Mondays from 7-9 p.m. or Saturdays from 2-4 p.m. at 7000 W. 117th Ave., Unit A, Broomfield, CO 80020. The Gizmo Dojo also hosts regular groups focusing on specific areas of interest. For more information, visit their Meetup page at http://www.Meetup.com/Broomfield-Makerspace-Meetup-Group/ and visit their website at http://www.TheGizmoDojo.com.

Meetings at the Crescent Grange

Welcome to BCAH’s New Member Group

The Gizmo Dojo

In 1867, Oliver H. Kelley, Department of Agriculture, founded the Grange. The Grange's purpose was to provide farmers with an organization that could assist them with any difficulties that arose. This advocacy enabled farmers to bring their harvest to the nation via the railroad at fair market value. Today in Broomfield, the Crescent Grange sponsors social activities, community service, education, political lobbying, (especially for water rights,) and a community garden, which donates to FISH, a local food pantry in town. Last year, we became a Colorado Historical Landmark. New members fuel the future; partnering is always appreciated. We welcome you to join us for meetings on the fourth Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. Currently, we are in need of becoming ADA compliant; particularly, a ramp and accessible restroom. Donations or in-kind help are welcome. With these services, we will be able to expand our educational goals to all! The Broomfield Crescent Grange (BCG) is located 7901 W. 120th Ave., Broomfield, CO 80020. For more information about the Grange, please contact Karen Juenemann, BCG Treasurer, by calling 303-596-8314.

Once again we gather for one of our most treasured traditions, the annual Colorado Repertory Singers (CRS) holiday concert. Over the past few years, these holiday performances have evolved into concert experiences filled with warmth and music. We invite you to join us as you make your way through the holiday season for an evening of singing and stories that will stir your heart and mind with winter reflections. CRS will perform under the leadership of Artistic Director, Dr. Kyle Fleming. Tickets: adults $15, senior and youth $12, child 10 & under (free) To purchase tickets and for more information, visit http://www.ColoradoRepertorySingers.org. About Colorado Repertory Singers CRS is a Broomfield-based choral organization that provides an excellent concert experience by presenting a diverse repertoire of fine choral works. CRS provides singers of all ages an environment that encourages personal musical growth and fosters a sense of community among its membership. CRS was formed in January 2002 with a vision to create a community choir that would be accessible to all and bring a repertoire of diverse music to the community as a whole. The auditioned members of the chorus share a love of music and a commitment to excellence. Our organization provides education, cultural enlightenment, and entertainment for the public through the presentation of choral music, while also providing our singers continuing access to a full range of vocal works. The choir recognizes the need to bridge generations and afford mentoring opportunities to young singers if a viable heritage of diverse vocal works is to remain available for future generations to enjoy. Presently, the choir consists of approximately 60 singers who come together to inspire and engage audiences through the creation of musical art. Singers are from diverse backgrounds with each one sharing a passion for making music.

BCAH’s Christmas Card Contest

Years ago, BCAH‘s Christmas Card Contest was exclusively open to adult artists. Last year, we revived the contest and those in middle school and high school were eligible to participate. We received over 70 impressive entries from three schools. The winner was chosen by majority vote cast by the BCAH Board of Directors and Executive Director (2019 winning entry featured at right). This year, we have decided to give the elementary school children the chance to have their artwork chosen for the cover of BCAH’s official Christmas card. The deadline to deliver an entry to the Brunner Farmhouse (640 Main St., Broomfield, CO 80020) is November 27 by 2:30 p.m. As part of this contest, all participants are given the opportunity to purchase cards with their artwork on the cover and their name and the name of the piece printed on the back. Orders are placed the same day the entries are received and available for pickup within 3-5 days. You may also drop off an entry early to ensure you have your cards in time to send out for the holidays. An order of 25 cards is $37 and an order of 50 cards is $45. If your child or grandchild would like to enter, please call 303-460-6800 or send an email to [email protected]. To see the entry flyer and order form, visit http://www.ArtsinBroomfield.org and select “Children’s Events” under “Programs.”
