Susan is from Tamarac and most recently worked at Parkland Golf and Country Club as the Banquet Manager. She has managed events of every size and states that she strives to insure that she exceeds expectations with every

customer. Susan is familiar with Five Star Senior Living through her husband, who is the Executive Chef at our sister property in Coral Springs. We are excited to have her join our team and look forward to her ideas and changes to the dining experience.

by Five Star Resident, Phyllis Singer Nathanael West is mainly known for four

novels which were published post-mortem: The Day of the Locust, Miss Lonelyhearts, Dream Life of Balso Snell and A Cool Million. He was also an important screenwriter. In Hollywood, West occupied cubicles at RKO and Republic and generated “B” picture screenplays. He was colleagues with F. Scott Fitzgerald and met famous humorist S.J. Perelman while studying at Brown University.

While at a Hollywood party, West met Eileen McKenney. She was working as a secretary in the publicity department for Disney. She was the model for the book and Broadway musical that was later made into the movie My Sister Eileen. Written from the perspective of Eileen’s sister, Ruth, this book/musical/movie chronicled the adventures of two sisters who moved from Ohio to New York and lived in the West Village. West and McKenney were politically involved and later

married in April 1940. West wrote four notable screenplays: Five

Came Back (1939), Men Against the Sky (1940), Let’s Make Music, also titled Malvina Swings It, (1940) and Stranger on the Third Floor co-authored with Boris Ingster. His novel Miss Lonelyhearts was not made into a film until 1972.

West liked to hunt, so he and his wife took a belated honeymoon to El Centro, California, in late 1940. He was notorious for being a terrible driver and ran a stop sign resulting in a fatal accident. As this occurred in such a remote location, West expired while waiting for the ambulance. Eileen died on the way to the hospital. Thus the world lost a brilliant writer and possibly a superb screenwriter. To quote the character Joe from A Cool Million, “Things happen and you can’t help ‘em.”

Election Updates Primary Election Day is August 18th

The Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, August 18th. By now, you should have received your ballot by mail. Please complete it. The postage is pre-paid to return your ballot. Contact the Lifestyle Team if you have questions or need assistance. You can also call the Broward County Supervisor of Elections office at 954-357-7050.

Plantation City Council Nick Sortal is among those who are seeking re-

election to the Plantation City Council. Sortal is the councilmember who visited us last August and enrolled several residents as volunteers with the Broward School Board. That led to our regular Monday van shuttle to Mirror Lake Elementary School, where we were able to help teachers and students at the school.

Nick has also increased communication with city residents overall, posting regular updates about Plantation on Facebook and NextDoor. He also has visited about 10 neighborhood associations, providing a list and flip chart of “10 Topics in Plantation” that are fodder for a civil, constructive discussion.

The Plantation race this November has open council seats in Group 3, 4 and 5. All voters pick candidates in all the races, and the city races are non-partisan, meaning the candidates run on their own, without a party affiliation.
