The formats to go about answering my social studies source based ~ the

format for different types of sbq questions? Do we just infer? How about

    purposes?

Generally provenance is low level and purpose is often the highest level. since they will

take the highest level achieved, write those high level ones. but if you are not confidentthen also talk about content if not if ur purpose is a misinterpretation then no marks.

"What is the message of the cartoon?" just write the main message (not the sub

message) and then write a purpose statement (with audience and outcome)

"How different are these two sources?" dont bother to talk abt provenance waste ur

time only just write about a bit of content, then go to tone and purpose. must

    support with source evidence.

"How far can you believe that..." its a reliability qn. do a CR + a purpose.

"How useful is this source as evidence that..." is a usefulness qn. Do typicality, CR,

    reliablity/purpose.

If they ask "Can you accept this source...." or "Does this source prove that..." you

have to answer with Yes (and) No. If you dont say yes or no then its a zero mark

because you never answer the question.

    Inference

    - 2 inferences supported with evidence

Inference with purpose- 2 inferences supported with evidence (Preferred two but usually one is still okay)- Purpose of the source [Action verb + Target Audience + Message + Intended

    impact]

    Comparison

    - Provenance [S or D]

    - Content [S and D]

    - Tone [S and/or D]

    - Purpose [S or D]

    *Difference in viewpoint (if have)

    Reliability

    - Provenance

    - Content -> Unreliable -> Bias/Propaganda? Purpose [Action verb + Target Audience+ Message + Intended impact]

    - Cross reference*Enhanced reliability (if have)

    Usefulness

    -Provenance

-Content -> Useful because it supports the question.-> Not useful because limitations - Lack of info.

    -Cross reference

*Unreliable but useful (Very important, if have)

    Testing Assertion

-State which sources support the question.

    -> Content with supported evidences

    - State which sources do not support the question.

    -> Content with supported evidences

    - Cross reference to contextual knowledge/ other sources

-> Show that a not useful/useful source is actually useful/not useful.

    Surprised?

    - Content -> Use logic or background info to determine if there are any reasons why you

should be surprised by the source.

    - Cross reference -> Does other sources contradict? If so, you are surprised.

-> Does other sources support? If so, you are not surprised.

Does A shows that B is right?

    - Cross reference ofA and B. Inference of source B with evidence. Inference of source A

with evidence. Supports? Show that it's right. Contradicts? Does not show it's right.- Cross reference ofB (the base source) with other sources. Inference of source B with

evidence. Inference of other sources with evidence. Supports? Show that it's right.

Contradicts? Does not show it's right.

    - Purpose of source A. Does it have a purpose? A motive to alter the facts? Or

maybe a reason why it wants to say it? If it has a purpose or an ulterior motive, itmost likely isn't genuine and hence DOES NOT SHOW that A is right.

Unreliable but useful is often the highest skill for usefulness question unless it's reliable

because if it is reliable there's no need for further explanation why it is useful is because

it is s usually common-sensically it will be useful. It is only when unreliable that people

will start to ponder over its usefulness.

You see.. Most sources that are unreliable are regarded as not useful but sources that are

reliable are usually regarded as useful.

However for usefulness question, an unreliable source may still be useful. Firstly, a

propaganda source may be useful in telling us that the government enforces propaganda

so as to influence the people's mind, etc. Secondly, if it is biased source, it still is usefulbecause all the more it shows people's opinion on that person or a dictator or whatever.

For example if it's biased with a strong opposition towards..

Let's say Hitler.. It shows that the people do not really like him nor support him stuff likethat.

From the above, you could have easily figured out that all sources are easily useful,

whether reliable or not, it's up to you to find out how it can be useful to you.

regards to provenance: Why is it important to note these PROVENANCE details? Whatis PROVENANCE ? Cast light on:

o Who is the creator /

    o author of the source?

    o When was the source

    o produced?

    o Where was the source

    o produced?

o Whom was it created for?

the target audience; explain purpose how long after the event was it produced; affectsreliability the authors relationship with the person/event s/he is describing; explain why

describe the PURPOSE of a source?

    12. It is a process of checking the reliability of a specific aspect of a source bycomparing it either

o against what another source says, or

    b) against ones own knowledge For cross-reference to work, it must be clear:o What exactly is being checked i.e. the specific aspect / claim in the

given source that is being checked

o That there is an indication of doubt , hence the need to check the claim

i.e. the reliability of a specific aspect / claim in the source is being tested.

o What exactly it is being checked against i.e. something in another

source, or some specific item of factual knowledge to test the claim

    What is CROSS-REFERENCE ?

    13. What is BACKGROUND INFORMATION ?

    o Information provided in a decontextualised /

o contextualised case study of a SBQ

o Information to introduce / provide more

o information about the case study

o Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom (UK). Northern Ireland

o has 2 groups of people. The majority who controls the Government are

o the Protestants. They are settlers from Britain. The minority are

o Catholics who are the descendants from the local Irish inhabitants. The

o Catholics have always believed that the Protestants government is

o biased against the Catholics and demanded for equal treatment. When

o tensions grew between the Catholics and the Protestants, the British

    o

sent it their troops to maintain peace. However, the British troops wereo seen as biased against the Catholics and the Catholics formed their

o owned armed resistance group called the IRA or Ireland Republican

o Army who demanded for a separation from the UK. Many terrorists

o attacks such as bombings were carried out by the IRA .

    16. Study Source A. Why do you think the cartoonist portrays the IRA in the way hedoes? Explain you answer. (6) Source A An American cartoon about the IRA. Bobby

Sands, a member of the IRA, was the first prisoner to starve himself to death during the

1981 hunger strike. He had demanded special privileges and political status forimprisoned IRA members.

    17. He wants to show the IRA people carrying the coffin of their member. They are

carrying the coffin of Bobby Sands. They are holding guns and saying I was afraid hednever die. L1 Answer Guide: L1 Answer based on provenance / merely describes the

o What can you learn from Source A about?

    22. The IRA is just a bunch of crooks. There isnt a building or a pub that you donthold up for protection money. Youve made this place into a bloody shambles. Youre

not fighting for anybodys freedom. Not mine, not the people of Northern Irelands, not

anybodys. The only thing youre doing is making people hate each other worse than

ever. Maybe thats what you want, isnt it? Because if the Catholics stopped hating theProtestants, where would the IRA be? Source B A c omment on the IRA by Moira Dillon,

a Catholic, who was held hostage by IRA gunmen I believe the armed struggle can be

justified, even though I dont like it. I dont like the fact that Irish men and women haveto resort to force of arms. But I sincerely believe that the armed struggle would cause

embarrassment and ridicule for the British Government throughout the world. This, I

hope would force the British Government at some time in the future to work toward apositive, radical and peaceful solution. Source C A n account given by Martin

McGuinness, Deputy President of Sinn Fein, the political wing of the IRA, in 1990 Qn:

1b Study Source B and C. How different are these sources? Explain your answer. (6) .

    23. Source B tells me that the IRA is a bad organisation. It caused a lot of death anddestruction to Northern Ireland. The source also says that the IRA caused the Catholic

and Protestant to hate each other. Source C tells me that the Deputy President of SinnFein believes that armed struggle is justified. He believes that armed struggle would be

and embarrassment and ridicule for the British. Answer Guide: L1 Difference based on

Ireland into a place of bloody shambles while Source C agrees by stating that Irish men

and women have to resort to force of arms. Both sources are also different in that bothdisagree over the use of violence . Source B states that the IRAs armed struggle is

worthless however, Source C states that armed struggles is justified . This is seen in

Source B where Moira Dillon, a Catholic, says that the armed struggle makes theCatholic and Protestant hate each other while in Source C, the Deputy President feels that

the armed struggle might force the British government to work towards a peaceful

solution to the conflict. C L3

o How far do Sources B and C agree with each other?

o Do you think the speaker in Source B would agree with the views in

    Source C?

o Lets look at an example

    27. Source E An extract taken from an article, Inside the IRA, 1994 So far, the IRAhas talked a convincing game, persuading us to believe they want peace. Yet their

terrorist actions suggest that they do not want peace. Their justification for continuing

their war against the British is oppression, inequality and injustice. I believe the armedstruggle can be justified, even though I dont like it. I dont like the fact that Irish men

and women have to resort to force of arms. But I sincerely believe that the armed struggle

would cause embarrassment and ridicule for the British Government throughout theworld. This, I hope would force the British Government at some time in the future to

work toward a positive, radical and peaceful solution. Source C A n account given by

Martin McGuinness, Deputy President of Sinn Fein, the political wing of the IRA, in1990 Study Source C and E. How far does Source C support Source E? Explain your

    answer. (6) .

    28. Source C supports Source E to a certain extent . Source C states that Irish menand women have to resort to force of arms and this implies that there has been violence

in Northern Ireland. This is supported by Source E which states that the IRA has involved

in terrorist actions On the other hand, Source C states that the IRA activities were meant

to force British government to discuss peace . However, Source E strongly feels that theIRA is not sincere in wanting peace because they are still involve in terrorist activities.

    POSSIBLE ANSWER

    29. Qn: 1c Study Source D. Does the source prove that the IRA has the support of the

Catholics in Northern Ireland ? Explain your answer. (6) . Source D An IRA memberwith Catholic children

    30. Yes , the source proves that the Catholic support the IRA as the photograph showsme that there are many children playing around an IRA member . The children are not

afraid as they are smiling and seem very happy to be with the IRA member. Answer

    32. The source does prove that the Catholic support the IRA but only to a certain

extent. The photograph maybe staged by the IRA to show that they have the support of

the Catholic. The children maybe also be asked to pose with the IRA member to showthat the IRA is very popular. C Answer Guide: L1 Agrees based on source content (1) L2

    33. No , Source D does not prove that the Catholics support the IRA. The photograph

shows that the Catholic children are playing happily with the IRA member who is armed.

However, I know that not all Catholics support the IRA . This can been seen from SourceB , a Catholic, Moira Dillon, comments that the IRA is not supporting anybodys

freedom and that it has worsened the relationships among the people . Her feelings

towards the IRA prove to me that the IRA is not supported by all Catholics. D AnswerGuide: L1 Agrees based on source content (1) L2 Disagrees based on typicality (2) L3

    Agrees but raises doubts (3-4) L4 Agrees/Disagrees based on cross-reference (6) L4

    34. Other ways questions on checking reliability can be asked ..

    o Study Sources C and D.

o The two source differ in their views of the behaviour of the British army

in Northern Ireland. Does it mean that one of them is wrong? Explain your answer.

    o Study Source B.

o How reliable is Source B for showing that the Catholics in NorthernIreland were hostile towards the British Army ? Explain your answer.

    35. Ways to do cross reference:

    o Step 1

o Read the question carefully. The clue to what you need to look at will

be in the question. Focus on that.

    o Step 2

o Pick out any statement or point from the text which you can disagree or

    agree with

    o Step 3

o Discuss the statement or point you have picked out earlier with the

points / statements in other sources / the background information

    36. Lets try it : We are fortunate that the IRA is helping us in this conflict. Who dowe have to stand by us against the British government , the Protestants and the British

army? Only the IRA. Our lives have been more secure, our property protected and the

IRA is interested in making peace with the British government. Source F A view of a

Catholic who is very happy with the IRA Study Source F. Does the source prove that the

IRA has the support of the Catholics in Northern Ireland ? Explain your answer. (6) . No ,the source only proves that the Catholic support the IRA to a certain extent. Source F

states that because of the IRA presence 'our lives have been more secure, and ourproperty protected . However, I know that this is not totally true as Source B states that

the IRA has made Northern Ireland into a bloody shambles.
