1 Setting Preferences

To customize the Kodak dental imaging 3D module software and the tools, use the Preferences window.

Setting Preferences

To set preferences, follow these steps:

1 In the Kodak Dental Imaging Software 3D module window, click the Edit Preferences button, which is shaped like a gear, in the lower-right section of the window.

The Preferences window is displayed.

2 In the Application section of the window, select an application mode and click Apply:

Easy—Displays an abbreviated set of tools and settings.

Advanced—Displays all of the tools available in the 3D module.

Note: You can switch between application modes at any time.

3 To customize how the software uses your video card memory, click the 3D View button.

If your computer has less than 4GB of RAM or 1GB of video RAM, move the slider to the left, increasing the performance; you might need to adjust this setting to increase the speed of the program.

If your computer has 4GB of RAM or 1GB of video RAM, move the slider all the way to the right, increasing the quality without decreasing the speed of the program. If your computer meets the minimum requirements of the video card, select Shading to display the best rendering of the 3D image.

Click Apply.

Note: Select Shading when you create a screenshot.

4 To specify the color of the background of the 3D scene and the color of the marker and adjustment bars of the cut plane windows, click the Colors button.

Select the colors from the drop-down lists and click Apply.

5 To change the display of measurements, click the Units button.

Select millimeter or inch and click Apply.

6 To specify printing options for the tabs and views in the software, click the Templates button.

Select the print templates for each tab and view from the drop-down lists and click Apply.

The Template for orthogonal slicing preference determines where the 3D scene will be displayed on the Orthogonal Slicing tab. You can choose between upper-left, upper-right (default), lower-right, and lower-left. Make your change to this selection and then click Apply.

If the 3D scene does not change to the new position immediately, exit and reopen the 3D module.

7 To activate the Reformatting tool and to set spacing preferences, click the MPR button.

To rotate or reconstruct an acquired volume, activate the Reformatting tool and click Apply. If only one workstation is used to send volumes to referring practices, enable this setting on that workstation.

For images made on a Kodak 9000 system, select K9000; for images made on a Kodak 9500 system, select K9500; for other images, select Other.

To set the default spacing between slices on split views in the MPR windows, select the spacing from the drop-down list and click Apply. If split views are displayed in the windows when you change this setting, you must restart the software.

8 To control the orientation of the 3D scene and the MPR views, click the View Orientation button.

These indicators are displayed on the screen:

A—Anterior P— Posterior L—Left R—Right H—Head / View from above F—Foot / View from below

Select a view, click Apply and OK, and then check the results. Continue to adjust the settings and check the results.

9 To designate the location of screenshots, click the Export button.

If you use the same folder for all screenshots, select Same folder for all screenshots. This is useful if you use screenshots with other programs, such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, or Microsoft PowerPoint. Click Apply.

The Orthogonal Slicing tab contains the following views of a Kodak 3D volume:

Use the following procedures when working on the Orthogonal Slicing tab:

To adjust slices in a cut plane window, use the handlebar that corresponds with the colored triangle located in the upper-right corner of the window.

To move through the slices quickly, click and drag the handlebar.

To align all planes to a single point quickly, select an area on the plane and press down on the mouse wheel.

Tools in the Orthogonal Slicing Tab Windows

Tools for working in the Orthogonal Slicing tab windows are located in the upper-left corner of each of the cut planes.

When you select the 1x1 setting, the following toolbar is displayed:

You can use these tools on the 1x1 toolbar:

Maximize/Minimize Window buttons — Click to maximize the cut plane window; click again to restore the window to normal size.

Open in New Window button – Click to open a cut plane inside a new window. You can drag the new window to another monitor.

Split View button – Click to change the view from 1x1 to 3x3, 5x5, 1x3, 3x1, 1x5, or 5x1.

Slice Spacing button – Inactive when split view is set to 1x1.

Set Integration button – Active for 1x1 view only. Click to increase or decrease the cut plane slice thickness.

When you select 3x3 or other split pane views, the following toolbar is displayed:

You can use these tools on the 3x3 and other split pane toolbars:

Maximize/Minimize Window buttons — Click to maximize the cut plane window; click again to restore the window to normal size.

Open in New Window button – Click to open a cut plane inside a new window. You can drag the new window to another monitor.

Adjusting an Image on the Orthogonal Slicing Tab

Some of the adjustment tools vary, depending on the preference setting: Easy or Advanced. Using the Advanced setting, you can use the following tools to adjust an image on the Orthogonal Slicing tab.

MPR Adjustments

To view the brightness and contrast sliders, click the MPR Adjustments button:

You can make the following MPR adjustments:

To adjust the brightness level, use the Sun slider.

To adjust the contrast level, use the Moon slider.

To reset both sliders to 50%, click the Curved arrow button.

Mouse Settings

To change the mouse settings, click the Mouse Settings button:

The following mouse settings are available:

To use the mouse wheel to move through cut plane slices, select Slide. Place the cursor in a cut plane and roll the wheel.

To use the mouse wheel to enlarge or shrink cut plane views, select Zoom. Place the cursor in a cut plane and roll the wheel to the appropriate size. To center an area of interest in an enlarged cut plane, click and drag using the right mouse button.

To enable the left mouse button to adjust the brightness and contrast, select MPR. Click and drag the left mouse button up or down to adjust the contrast and left or right to adjust the brightness.

To disable the use of the left mouse button to adjust the brightness and contrast, select None.

To view the 3D adjustment tools, click the 3D Adjustments button:

To change the noise reduction level, use the Gradient Threshold Adjustment slider:

To view the palette controls for 3D view, click the Eye button:

The palette controls are displayed in the bottom of the 3D window. To adjust the color/density ranges, place the cursor on a triangle and click and drag the triangle to the range you want. The left side of the color palette scale represents lower density structures, and the right side represents higher density structures.

To visualize the orientation and location on a patient’s anatomy when viewing cut plane slices, use the Planes tools.

You can use the following Planes tools:

3D Scene Planes with Edges Only

3D Scene Planes with Display MPR—Use this setting with a low degree of opacity.

3D Scene Planes with Display Colored Planes

Crop—Active on Oblique Slicing tab only.

Using the Curved Slicing Tab

The Curved Slicing tab enables you to examine the anatomy in depth. Before using the Curved Slicing tab for the first time, ensure that your axial slice displays the mandibular or maxillary arch.

The Curved Slicing tab contains the following views of a Kodak 3D volume:

 

Axial plane – use this 

view to draw curve 

Pseudo pan view – this view appears after a curve 

is drawn onto axial plane. 

3D View 

Trans‐axial or cross‐section view – This view is 

created by a 90° cut through the curve drawn onto 

the axial plane.

Adjusting an Image on the Curved Slicing Tab

Use the following tools to adjust and measure an image on the Curved Slicing tab:

Use the following tools to adjust the image:

Selection tool

Measurement tools—Draw a straight line or an angle. The drop-down menu enables you to lock the tools for multiple measurements.

Manually create an arch tool—Manually draw a curve onto the axial plane to create pseudo pan and trans-axial views.

Nerve Canal tool—Trace a nerve.

Implant tool—Place an implant and access the implant library.

Creating a Pseudo-Pan Image

On the Curved Slicing tab, you can create a pseudo-pan image.

To create a pseudo-pan image, follow these steps:

1 On the Orthogonal Slicing tab, adjust the axial slice to display the crowns of the teeth.

2 Click the Curved Slicing tab, and click the Manually create an arch button.

3 Click on the areas of interest to set control points. Double-click to set the last control point.

The pseudo-panoramic image is displayed at the voxel setting at which the volume was acquired.

4 To present the pseudo-pan view as a traditional panoramic x-ray, set the integration to ~10 or ~15 mm.

5 Use the white arrow indicators on either side of the pseudo-pan image to control the height of the trans-axial (coronal oblique) view. The trans-axial (coronal oblique) image location is indicated by the blue line.

6 To set the trans-axial (coronal oblique) view to the area of interest and the angle of interest, use the blue indicator. The outside dots move the line left or right. The inside dots control the angle.

The location of the trans-axial (coronal oblique) slice is also visible on the axial slice and on the 3D scene.

7 To use the multiple slice views, click on the split view and choose a setting that displays the information of interest. The center image is your starting slice as defined by the blue line on the pseudo-pan image.

Use the Set Split Spacing drop-down menu to determine the slice spacing.

Tracing a Nerve Canal

To evaluate the anatomy for an extraction or implant placement, you might need to locate the mandibular nerve. Using the Nerve Canal tool, you can trace the nerve on the pseudo-pan image.

To trace a nerve canal, follow these steps:

1 Click the Activate/de-activate Nerve Canal tool button.

2 Click near the condyles in the center of the nerve canal. Trace towards the chin and click to add control points. Double-click when you have reached the end of the nerve canal.

To trace the nerve on the other side of the jaw, re-activate the tool.

By default, the nerve tracing tool is displayed in orange. To change the color, click the color box beneath the Tools section, select a color, and click OK.

3 To edit the tracing, click and drag individual control points to the correct location. To delete the tracing, click the Trash Can icon beneath the Tools section. To hide or display a tracing, click the Eye button next to the color box.

You can also trace the nerve in the trans-axial (coronal oblique) view. Use the scroll wheel on your mouse to slide between slices and left-click to place a control point as you scroll through. Double-click to end your tracing.

Important: To trace the nerve, use the smallest slice thickness and place each dot so that the nerve is visible. If the nerve is not visible, move the red dots to reveal it.

Using the Oblique Slicing Tab

The Oblique Slicing tab enables you to isolate and examine 360 degrees around an area of interest.

To use the Oblique Slicing tab, follow these steps:

1 On the Oblique Slicing tab, adjust your axial, coronal, and sagittal slices to display your region of interest.

2 Expand the 3D Adjustment tools so that the Planes section is displayed, and click the Display cropping box button. A cube is displayed around the 3D scene, and corresponding selection boxes are displayed in the MPR windows.

3 To adjust the visible 3D area, click and drag the white dots.

5 After you isolate the area of interest, you can rotate the MPR views to see 360 degrees around the area. To rotate a view, click on the inside dot of the corresponding selection tool.

Understanding the Numbers on MPR Views

Each of the cut plane MPR views in the 3D module has a millimeter measurement and a zoom number. When you hold your mouse over regions of interest in an MPR view, a relative density number is also displayed.

Millimeter Measurements

The millimeter measurements enable coordination between multiple practitioners viewing the same volume on different computers.

The position within a 3D volume is represented by a millimeter number at the upper-left of each MPR view. In the axial slice displayed in the following example, 23.20 mm indicates the distance from the bottom of the volume to the selected location. The larger the number, the closer the slice is to the top of the patient’s head.

In the coronal slice displayed in the following example, 36.00 mm indicates the distance from the most anterior point of the volume to the selected location. The larger the number, the closer the slice is to the patient’s posterior regions.

In the coronal slice displayed in the following example, 46.40 indicates the distance from one edge of the volume to the selected location.

Zoom Number

The zoom number, in the lower-left of each MPR view, indicates how closely the representation of the image is to the actual size of the anatomy. It does not affect measurements made on the original 1:1 image slices.

Relative Density

The relative density number, displayed in the lower-right corner when the mouse is held over a portion of the MPR view, can be used to compare density within a volume. Higher numbers indicate areas of higher density.

3 Using the Color Palette Manager

The Kodak 3D module has pre-defined color palettes that can be applied to the 3D scene of a Kodak 9000 or a Kodak 9500 volume.

To work with the palettes, follow these steps:

1 Click the 3D Adjustments button and click the plus sign, which is the Display Palette Manager button, in the Adjustments section of the toolbar. The Palette library for current hardware is displayed.

The Grayscale palette is selected as the default and has been applied to the following 3D scene.

Use the following guidelines when working in a palette:

A colored star next to a palette name indicates that the palette is available on the drop-down menu and can be applied to a volume quickly.

A star with an outline indicates that the palette has been disabled but has not been deleted.

A piece of paper icon indicates a user-created palette. To edit the palette, click the icon.

To remove a palette permanently, use the trash can. System-created palettes cannot be edited or deleted.

2 To create a new palette, click the Create palette button. The current 3D scene is displayed.

3 Type a name in the Name field.

4 To re-align the 3D scene, use the four buttons next to the Name field.

5 To add the new palette to the drop down-list, select Favorite.

6 To designate the new palette as the default palette applied to new 3D volumes, select Default.

7 To change the color assigned to the least dense areas, click the color box next to S (for skin). The Color Palette window is displayed. Select the new color and click OK.

8 To control the amount of the 3D scene shown by the color, use the slider next to the density indicator. For the S indicator, this setting should be low, so that skin, air, and other minimally dense areas are not displayed.

You can customize the six density indicators and their presentation levels:

S—Skin – Least dense areas

F—Flesh – Soft tissue

B—Bone – Bone tissue

You can orient a 3D scene so that an area of interest is viewed in relation to a patient’s anatomy.

Perspective Orientation Button

The Perspective Orientation button re-orients the 3D scene to display it from the perspective orientation. The image is displayed so that the anterior, top, and left sides are visible.

You can also re-orient the 3D scene manually. To move the scene, click and drag the Orientation indicator or any part of the 3D screen.

Examples:

To create the following scene, click the Perspective Orientation button and drag the Orientation indicator towards the top of the window.

To create the following scene, click the Axial Orientation button and drag the Orientation indicator to the right.

Hints and Tips

To zoom in, place the mouse over the 3D scene and move the scroll wheel away from you.

To zoom out, place the mouse over the 3D scene and move the scroll wheel towards you.

To reset the 3D scene to the original size, select an orientation button at the top of the 3D scene window.

To adjust the location of the 3D scene while zoomed in or out, right-click the scene and drag it to the new location.

5 Using the Implant Library

Use the implant library to place, edit, and manage implants.

Placing an Implant

To place a new implant, follow these steps:

1 On the Curved Slicing tab, map a pseudo-pan and isolate the correct transaxial (oblique coronal) slice, using the blue control arrows. In the Tools section of the tab, select the Activate/deactivate implant placement tool button.

The Implant Library window is displayed.

2 To search for an implant that meets the needs of the patient, click the Extended Filter button.

4 Select the appropriate implant in the list and click OK. The implant is placed in the transaxial (oblique coronal) slice and is displayed in the pseudo pan image and the axial plane.

To rotate the implant, use the outside dots, and to move the implant in all directions, maintaining its orientation, use the center dot.

To move the implant in the Axial slice, click and drag the center dot.

To view the size of the implant, hold the cursor over the Implant button.

To change the default color of the implant, click the color square next to the Implant button.

To view the original anatomy without the implant, click the Eye button. The implant is hidden but not removed.

To remove the implant, click the Trash Can icon.

If more than one implant is placed in the same volume, they are listed separately on the toolbar.

To remove all implants in a volume, click the top Trash Can icon.

To manually add an implant and customize its appearance, follow these steps:

1 On the Curved Slicing tab, map a pseudo-pan and click the Activate/deactivate implant placement tool button. The Implant Library is displayed.

2 Click Add.

3 Specify the manufacturer, brand, reference, length, apical diameter, and diameter. You can select the body style, connection type, and default color of the implant.

New implants must use measurements that fall into the following ranges:

Length—2.0 mm and 100.0 mm Apical diameter—1.0 mm and 10.0 mm Diameter—1.0 mm and 10.0 mm

Click OK. The Implant Library is displayed and lists the new implant.

4 To mark a new implant as a favorite, click the gold star. To mark a system-provided implant as a favorite, click in the column to the left of the manufacturer name. A gold start is displayed. If you click on Favorite in the Filter section, the implants that have been marked as favorites are displayed.

To display the Kodak dental imaging software 3D module Volume Information window, click the + symbol next to a patient’s name.

The Volume Information window is displayed.

The following information is found in the window:

Name of the patient for whom the volume was acquired

Doctor/practice name, if using Trophy DICOM in a hospital setting

Patient ID, if using Trophy DICOM in a hospital setting

Acquisition date and time

Exposure kV, mA, and time in seconds

Opening a Different Volume

To open a different volume, follow these steps:

1 Click the + symbol and then click the Jaw button. The Welcome window is displayed, with the location of the volume.

2 Select the volume you want to review and click OK. If the volume has been opened previously, an analysis is displayed.

3 To view measurements, implants, and manipulations, highlight the analysis and click OK.

4 To view the volume with no prior measurements, implants, or manipulations, click Create.

Launching the Film Composer

Use the film composer to print a record of a patient’s 3D volume.

Printing Images in a Template

Use the Launch Film Composer button to print the following views of images in a template:

If you are on the Orthogonal Slicing tab, the axial, coronal, sagittal, and 3D scene views are printed.

If you are on the Curved Slicing tab, the axial, curved, trans-axial (coronal oblique), and 3D scenes are printed.

If an individual window is maximized, the window is printed.

The templates provide a 1-to-1 ratio and a “best fit” setting.

The templates also provide a choice of background colors: white or black. If you are using an inkjet or laser printer, use a white background; if you are using a DICOM printer, use a black background.

To modify the templates permanently, use the template editor, which is installed separately from the 3D module software.

Creating a Screenshot of the Current Workspace

When you create a screenshot of the displayed workspace, you create a .tif image, which can be used in other software, such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Outlook. The location of the screenshot depends on the folder you specify when you set preferences. If you will share screenshots in other software programs frequently, create a folder for the screenshots.

Opening the Screenshot Directory

When you click the Open Screenshot Directory button, the designated screenshot folder in Windows Explorer is opened, providing quick access to the screenshot.

Burning a Patient File to Disk

To burn the current patient file to disk, follow these steps:

1 Insert a blank, writeable CD in the CD-ROM drive and click the Burn a Patient File to Disk button. The Copying . . . window is displayed, and then the CD Writing Wizard is displayed.

3 Select the Close the wizard after the files have been written option and click Next. The Adding data to the CD image . . . window is displayed. Typically, the CD is ejected when the wizard is finished.

Generating a Cross-Section

To review or print a series of slices in an area of interest, you can generate a cross-section. To generate a cross-section, follow these steps:

1 Click the Generate a Cross-Section button. The Cross-Section Tool window is displayed, showing three slices.

2 To control the slice thickness and space between the slices, click the button.

3 When you have determined the integration and offset, use the indicator lines to partition the area of interest.

4 Click OK. When the slices are ready for presentation, the Film Composer window is displayed.

5 Choose a template and click Print. The Single View template displays all of the generated cross-sections, and the Four View template displays the starting sections to provide a frame of reference.

6 To display images in the gallery and all MPR and 3D scenes, click the Launch the Film Composer button. Each tab of the 3D module has a default template, and the appropriate template is displayed.

7 To switch between the templates, click the drop-down triangle to the right of the template name and select a template.

8 To view options, hold the mouse over an image. The Options bar is displayed with these options:

Best fit and 1:1 ratio—Click to toggle between these display options.

Image On/Off—Click to display or hide an image in a template.

Overlay On/Off—Click to display or hide a grid indicating the size of an image.

1 In the 3D module, click the Gear icon. The Preferences window is displayed.

2 Click the MPR button and select the type of volume you want to reformat.

4 Open the 3D volume you want to reformat. The Reformatting Tool window is displayed.

5 To correct a patient’s positioning, use the axial, coronal, and sagittal slice indicators. Adjust them with the inner dots until the volume is displayed correctly. Use the outside dots to ensure that the images are symmetrical.

6 Add a name in the Volume Name field and click OK. A new folder is created in the patient’s image folder.

7 Use these buttons to perform the following tasks:

Cancel—Cancels the opening of the 3D volume. You must close and reopen it to reformat it again.

Skip—Closes the Reformatting Tool window and opens the 3D volume.

Reset—Resets the 3D volume to the original images.

8 To crop a 3D volume, select the Crop Box option.

To display only part of the anatomy, adjust the white dots around the three MPR slices.

9 Add a name in the Volume Name field and click OK. A new folder is created in the patient’s image folder.

10 To increase the speed of opening and using the 3D module, select a higher voxel size from the Voxel Size drop-down list.
