Picture on Cover: Córdoba Synagogue is a historic edifice in the Jewish Quarter of Córdoba, Spain built in 1315. After the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, the building was devoted to various functions including a Hydrophobic hospital, a chapel for shoemakers, and a nursery school. It was declared a National Monument in 1885. Since then it has undergone several phases of the restoration including that of Felix Hernandez in 1929 and one started in 1977 for the reopening of the building in 1985 to celebrate the 850tH anniversary of birth of Maimonides.

Pictured Left: the tomb of Esther and Mordechai is located in Hamadan, Iran. Believed by some to house the remains of the biblical Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai, it is the most important pilgrimage site for Jews in the country. Iran is also the birthplace to some members of our Kehilat Chovevei tzion Family. Source: Wikipedia.

Letter from the Rabbi

ויעשו כולםאגודה אחת

From very early on we are taught the importance of being open to new experiences. Whether it’s being introduced to our first green vegetables or taking on a musical instrument, new experiences are the bedrock of intellectual, social and physical development. Sadly, as we get older we become more stagnant and tend to shy away from new opportunities. The routine and everyday is perhaps most dangerous when it comes to Avodat Hashem. In Elul the refrain which reverberates on our lips is “Al Tashlicheinu le’eit Ziknah,” do not cast us off into old age. The Maggid of Mezerich commented that old age doesn’t refer to years or wrinkles but rather stubbornness and unwillingness to grow and expand our horizons.

This year please consider each of our shul’s wonderful offerings not as an opportunity to find your own niche and comfort zone, but rather as a chance to expand your mind beyond that which you are accustomed. So choose a new class, something you’ve never before studied, participate in our social programs and try and meet new people. Check out the Sephardic minyan or hashkama minyan one Shabbat, dare to throw in an extra melody into your

prayers, volunteer to get involved in our Neshei or to tell a story one morning to our youth groups. If you’ve never been into music don’t be afraid to imbibe the soul penetrating songs of Yosef Kardunor.

A few highlights to take note of: With an election year ahead of us, KCT is proud to be offering a special program on Religion and politics.

Additionally, this previous year has been quite difficult for our kehila with the passing of our Sephardic founder and teacher, Reb Chaim Kohanchi z”l. We have reprinted an article of his from his sefer “Ner Chaim” in this brochure as a tribute to his indelible contributions to our kehila. His impact continues to be felt each day as the Sephardic minyan continues to grow and offer more Torah opportunities than ever before. On that note, we are pleased to welcome our Sephardic Rabbinic Intern, Rabbi Mosheh Aziz. There will be a number of opportunities throughout the year to interact and learn with him.

Our diverse cadre of classes and programs are here tohelp us grow, and connect to each other, to become an אגודה אחת, but that is only possible if we dare to look beyond our own routine. Please join me and together let us expand the walls of this glorious community which we have, with the help of God, built.

Fondly,Rabbi Shaanan Gelman

Letter from Assistant Rabbi

symposium ofgenerationsRabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik once referred to his shiur as a “symposium of generations.” He described how through teaching, he felt as though he was introducing his students to the Rambam, Rashi, Rabbi Akiva Eiger, and all of the other great Talmudic scholars throughout our history. In the Rav’s classroom generations that lived centuries apart were able to debate, challenge and, ultimately, inspire one another.

At KCT we strive to create and cultivate a “symposium of generations” as well. Through the countless hours of Torah study that take place within our four walls and beyond we attach ourselves to our mesorah, as well as inspire the next generation of Klal Yisrael to do the same.

To see a member of our early morning Daf Yomi grapple with a difficult Tosafot or someone become inspired by a Shabbos drasha is to join the “symposium.” And to see a parent and child bonding over Torah at Veshinantam is to know that this gift that has been entrusted to us, will surely be passed on to our children.

So join the Daf, or pick a shiur; set up a chavrutah or bring your children to learn. I invite you all to come and be part of KCT’s “symposium of generations!”

Rabbi Etan Ehrenfeld

Rabbi Mosheh Aziz is a third-year Semikha student and Maybaum Fellow at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary. He currently serves as an assistant rabbi for the Mashadi Jewish Community in Great Neck, NY. Rabbi Aziz recieved Yoreh-Yoreh Semikha from Rabbi Eliyahu Ben-Haim in 2012. He holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Wurzweiler School of Social Work and and a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Yeshiva University, where he graduated summa cum laude.

Tuvia Tenenbom

Author of “Catch

the Jew”

Dec. 20, 2015

Sponsored by Amy

and Mark Marshall,

Debbie and David Marmor, Malka and

Aaron Simkovich, Gina

and Art Fridberg

Tenenbom is a theater director,

playwright, author, journalist,

essayist and the founding artistic

director of the Jewish Theater

of New York, the only English-

speaking Jewish theater in New

York City. Tenenbom was called

the “founder of a new form of

Jewish theatre” by the French Le

Monde and a “New Jew” by the

Israeli Maariv. Tenenbom is also

an academic, having university

degrees in mathematics, computer

science, dramatic writing and

literature.

Tenenbom’s book Catch the Jew!,

published by

Gefen Publishing

recounts the

adventures of

Tuvia Tenenbom,

who wanders

around Israel of

our time calling

himself “Tobi the German.” In the

course of numerous interviews

Tuvia extracts information,

sentiments, hidden theories and

delusional visions motivating the

miscellany of peoples forming

the present-day Holy Land. The

Wall Street Journal hailed the

book, writing: “Catch the Jew!

offers one of the more interesting

portraits of Palestinian politics

to have appeared in English,” and

concluding that “no reader of Catch

the Jew! can come away having

failed to learn many new things

about Israelis and Palestinians,

two peoples we talk about so

much but understand so little.” In a

starred review, Publishers Weekly

writes that Tenenbom’s “riveting

tale, chock full of unbelievable

and hilarious encounters, is highly

engaging and emotional, eminently

readable, brutally honest, and likely

the most uncensored and eye-

opening report readers will see.”

“Catch the Jew” was published in

Israel in September 2014 by Sela

Meir publishers and became an

instant best seller in Israel, reaching

the #1 spot on Haaretz, Steimatzky

and Yedioth Ahronot Best Seller

lists, winning major praise by Israeli

critics. Mida called Tenenbom “the

ultimate leftist and humanist who

loves all people, is everything the

left pretends to be but is not,”

while Channel 2 TV named it “the

most important book in the last

five years,” and Haaretz, Israel’s

most prestigious paper, advised

its readers to “read Tenenbom’s

book; we don’t have the luxury

not to know what he’s telling us.”

In Germany the book came out in

November 2014 by the publishing

house of Suhrkamp under the title

“Allein unter Juden” (Alone Among

Jews) and immediately became a

Spiegel Best Seller. Like in Israel

and the USA, the book earned

major endorsements by German

critics. Spiegel Online said: “You

need to have curiosity in you and

a fearlessness of thought to view

the Middle East story differently,

a curiosity and a fearlessness that

Tuvia Tenenbom has,” and Die Welt

called it, “The finest book on the

Middle East saga.”

When Avraham negotiated with Hashem regarding the fate of Sedom and Amorah, he took an interesting approach. Our pasuk seems to say that he had no objection to Hashem killing the wicked, and insisted only that the righteous should be spared. But then he immediately switches his approach:

Perhaps there are fifty righteous people in the city. Will You still wipe it out, and not pardon the place for the sake of those fifty righteous men in its midst?2

Avraham asked if there were fifty righteous people that could save the whole city, not only themselves but everyone, including the wicked. How did he come to this new ap-proach?

Further, when Hashem answered that there were not fifty men, he bargained down until ten. Why did he stop asking at this number? Why not try for one man? And, deeper still, if he had already asked Hashem to differentiate between the righteous and the wicked, saving the one and destroying the other, what differ-ence did it make how many righteous people there were?

The answer lies in the nature of Divine justice, which is always , the punishment fitting the crime. When people kill each other without justice, the says that since someone else is doing his job, and doing it any way he wants, he too will do whatever he wants. Mass destruction descends upon that place, without separation between .3

I will go down and see if they have done according to the outcry that has come to Me.”4

Chazal tell us that this was the cry of Lot’s daughter, who was killed by the people of Se-dom for feeding the hungry and poor. 5 This kind of behavior gave the power to kill indiscriminately.

Avraham knew this rule: when the is granted permission to kill, he does not dif-ferentiate between good and bad people. 6 Therefore he had to ask Hashem to send two mal’achim to Sedom, one to destroy and one to save the good people.

This was the first stage of Avraham’s negotia-tions: he asked that the righteous should not be killed with the wicked, his goal being to achieve distinction, whereby every man would be accountable for his own deeds, rather than mass killing of everybody.

After he achieved this concession from Hash-em, it was now established that the sins of Sedom were not necessarily “public property.” A good man could still be recognized as good and so be exempted from the destruction. Now Avraham started to ask if maybe there were enough righteous people to have an in-fluence on the general public. Could their indi-vidual goodness become a new public norm in time? If it could, he could now ask Hashem to save the whole city in order to give its good people a chance to reform it.

To understand Avraham’s thinking better, let us imagine that someone was told that his leg must be amputated. After some thought, he asked if every part of the leg was so bad that this was necessary. The doctor agreed to check further, and found out that one small area of the upper leg was not as bad as the rest. The patient now asked his next question: was it possible that this area was recover-ing? And based on that, perhaps the whole leg could recover? At first he could not have asked this, but now that a part might be re-covering, it was possible that the whole leg would, too. Avraham followed this same logic

concerning Sedom and Amorah.

He stopped at the number ten because in the time of Noach Hashem had separated nine people (including Og) and saved them in the Ark. This indicated that the nine peoplewere tzaddikim, yet they were not enough to save everyone else. Avraham knew, then, that less than ten would not be enough.

All the same, Hashem saved Lot and his family, and He did this owing to the fact that Avra-ham prayed for Sedom. We can learn from here that no prayers go to waste, even if it seems that we didn’t receive what we asked for. Avraham asked to save the cities, and the next day they were destroyed, but unknown to him Lot and his family were saved.

Nehama Leibowitz (September 3, 1905 – 12 April 1997) was a noted Is-raeli Bible scholar and commentator who rekindled interest in Bible study.

Nehama Leibowitz was born to an Orthodox Jewish family in Riga two years after her elder brother, the philosopher Yeshayahu Leibowitz. The family moved to Berlin in 1919. In 1930, Leibowitz received a doc-torate from the University of Mar-burg for her thesis, techniques in the translations of german-Jewish Biblical translations. That same year 1930, she immigrated to Mandate Palestine. She taught at a religious Zionist teachers’ seminar for the next twenty-five years. In 1957 she be-gan lecturing at Tel Aviv University, and became a full professor eleven years later. She also gave classes at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and other educational institutions around the country. In addition to her writings, Leibowitz commented on

the Torah readings regularly for the Voice of Israel radio station.

In 1942, Leibowitz began mailing out stencils of questions on the weekly Torah reading to anyone who re-quested them. These worksheets, which she called gilyonot (pages) would be sent back to her, and she would personally review them and return them with corrections and comments. They became very popular and in demand by people from all sectors of Israeli society. In 1954, Leibowitz began publishing her “Studies”, which included many of the questions that appeared on her study sheets, along with se-lected traditional commentaries and her own notes on them. Over time, these studies were collected into five books, one for each book of the Torah. The five books were subsequently translated into English by Rabbi Dr. Aryeh (Laibel/Leonard) Newman.

When asked to describe her meth-ods she replied, “I have no derech... I only teach what the commentaries say. Nothing is my own.” She was noted for her modest demeanor coupled with wry wit, and always preferred the title of “teacher” over the more prestigious “professor.” In accordance with her request, morah, “teacher” is the only word inscribed on her tombstone.

She was strict on marking mistakes in Hebrew test papers, and hated the code-switching “Heblish” of some anglophone immigrants.

In 1956, Leibowitz was awarded the Israel Prize in education, for her work in furthering understanding and ap-preciation of the Bible.

In 1983, she was a co-recipient (joint-ly with Ephraim Elimelech Urbach) of the Bialik Prize for Jewish thought.

The Prime Ministers: The Pioneers (2013)January 9, 2016 VVV

The Prime Ministers: The Pioneers, is the 13th release by Moriah Films, the Academy A w a r d - w i n n i n g d o c u m e n t a r y

filmmaking division of the Simon Wiesenthal Center. Based on the best- selling book by Ambassador Yehuda Avner, The Prime Ministers: The Pioneers takes the audience inside the offices of Israel’s Prime Ministers through the eyes of an insider, Yehuda Avner, who served as a chief aide, English language note-taker and speech writer to Levi Eshkol, Golda Meir, Yitzhak Rabin, Menachem Begin, and Shimon Peres. The first of two parts, The Prime Ministers: The Pioneers focuses on Ambassador Avner’s years working with Prime Ministers Levi Eshkol and Golda Meir and then US Ambassador Yitzhak Rabin and reveals new details about the Six-Day War, the development of Israel’s close strategic relationship with the United States, the fight against terrorism, the Yom Kippur War and its aftermath. In the spring of 2014, the second film based on Ambassador Avner’s book, The Prime Ministers: Soldiers and Peacemakers, will be released, examining Ambassador Avner’s experiences with Prime Ministers Yitzhak Rabin, Menachem Begin and Shimon Peres as well as his service as Israel’s Ambassador to England. The early efforts at negotiating agreements with Egypt, the raid on Entebbe, Anwar Sadat’s historic visit to Jerusalem, the Camp David Accords, the bombing of Iraq’s nuclear facility, the war in Lebanon, the Oslo Accords and the ongoing struggle to make peace with Israel’s Arab neighbors and the Palestinians are some of the topics covered as The Prime Ministers: Soldiers and Peacemakers builds to its dramatic and emotional conclusion. Weaving a rich tapestry of history and personal testimonies, The Prime Ministers brings some of the most important events of the 20th and 21st centuries to life. Starring the voices of Sandra Bullock as Golda Meir,

The Gatekeepers (2012)March 5, 2016 VVVV

The Gatekeepers is a 2012 documentary film by director Dror Moreh that tells the story of the Israeli internal security service, Shin Bet (known in Hebrew

as ‘Shabak’), from the perspective of six of its former heads.

The film combines in-depth interviews, archival footage, and computer animation to recount the role that the group played in Israel’s security from the Six-Day War to the present. The film was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 85th Academy Awards.

Our Boys (2015) Tisha Ba’av, August 14, 2016

Our Boys is the fourteenth documentary produced by Moriah Films. The film examines the events surrounding the kidnapping and murder of Gil-Ad Shaer, Naftali Fraenkel, and Eyal Yifrach, z”l, by Hamas terrorists in the summer of 2014. The parents of each boy recall their short lives and how this tragedy has impacted upon them. Arab affairs analyst for Israeli TV Ehud Ya’ari and author Yossi Klein Halevi discuss why the kidnapping and murder of the boys galvanized Israel and the Diaspora. The film them examines how the indiscriminate shelling of Israeli cities and towns from Gaza by Hamas, which followed the murders, resulted in the Gaza war. The film also looks at how events during and following the Gaza war have led to the greatest resurgence of anti-Semitism in Europe since the defeat of the Nazis in 1945.

Michael Douglas as Yitzhak Rabin, Leonard Nimoy as Levi Eshkol and Christoph Waltz as Menachem Begin, The Prime Ministers: The Pioneers is written, produced and directed by Academy Award winner Richard Trank and co-written and produced by two-time Academy Award winner Rabbi Marvin Hier. Grammy and Emmy winner Lee Holdridge composed and conducted the films’ original score.

Footnote (2011)February 13, 2016 VVVV

Footnote is the tale of a great rivalry between a father and son. Eliezer and Uriel Shkolnik are both eccentric professors, who have dedicated their lives to their work in Talmudic Studies.

The father, Eliezer, is a stubborn purist who fears the establishment and has never been recognized for his work. Meanwhile his son, Uriel, is an up-and-coming star in the field, who appears to feed on accolades, endlessly seeking recognition.

Then one day, the tables turn. When Eliezer learns that he is to be awarded the Israel Prize, the most valuable honor for scholarship in the country, his vanity and desperate need for validation are exposed. His son, Uriel, is thrilled to see his father’s achievements finally recognized but, in a darkly funny twist, is forced to choose between the advancement of his own career and his father’s. Will he sabotage his father’s glory?

Footnote is the story of insane academic competition, the dichotomy between admiration and envy for a role model, and the very complicated relationship between a father and son.
