Letter from the Rabbi
SHANATOVA!Recent events in Israel have taught us that the Jewish
nations greatest strength is her unity. This past year we
witnessed the unprecedented power of collective Jewish
prayer, as Jews of all stripes poured out their hearts at the
Kotel. Our brethren throughout the diaspora joined rank
in solidarity, dedicating their tefillot and tzedaka in support
of our holy soldiers and the citizens of the Jewish State.
It was in that critical hour that we were privileged to see
Am Yisrael in its finest and most noble form. Even locally
there was a palpable sense of mission and moral clarity,
as petty differences were brushed aside making room for
that which was most central. This years mission must be to
continue achieving heights in achdut, even in the aftermathof the crisis.
In truth, achdut is not just a social ideal but it is also an
essential element in developing a relationship with the
Torah. Our sacred Torah was given to us only as we stood
all-together at the base of Mt. Sinai. Henceforth, unity
became the necessary precondition for kabalat haTorah.
We are only able to teach, learn, and grow spiritually if we
do so as a whole.
We are only able to teach, learn, and grow spiritually ifwe do so as a whole.Rav Kook teaches us that Torah which is not inclusive of the
klal, the entirety of Am Yisrael, is incomplete.
As such, we dedicate this year of Torah study to the klal. Torah
study this year at our shul must and will transcend the individ-
ual. Pray with a tzibur. Grow with a tzibur. Dont just attend a
shiur, bring a friend, consider partaking in our chavrusa pro-
gram, make new friends at our Beer Torah Oneg or Meet and
Eat Luncheon.
In reviewing this issue of KCTs educational offerings, I trust
you will discover your rightful place at the foot of the mountain
alongside your friends at KCT - KIsh Echad Blev Echad.
Byedidut,
Rabbi Shaanan Gelman

Letter from Assistant Rabbi
JOIN THEFAMILY
Shalom UBracha,
You hold in your hand a guide, not just to the program-
ming for 5775, but to what unites KCT as a community
and, more so, as a family.
Like any family, ours begins with our children. Since mov-
ing into our new facility we have seen tremendous growth
in our youth programming, both in the number of children
participating, as well as the quantity and quality of the
programs themselves.
Our family enjoys a good time, and that is why our calen-
dar is filled with fun and social outings, from our annual
Shul Dinner to the 5K Run, and all five movies in between.
Finally, at the heart and soul of our family is our value for
Torah learning and Torah living. Not a day passes without
Torah being studied in our shul. On Thursday nights our
...at the heart and soul of ourfamily is our value for Torahlearning and Torah living.
Beit Midrash is filled with the sound of teens and adults study-
ing along with members of the YU Torah Mitzion Kollel. On
Shabbat afternoon we offer a Bar Mitzvah class, a Gemarah
Cavurah and a Womens Parsha Shiur. And if you flip through
these pages you will find that this isnt even half of learning op-
portunities that KCT offers.
This year find three or four (or more) offerings in this guide
that you like. Circle them. Write them on your calendar. Set a
reminder in your phone. Come and become part of the family.
Wishing you a wonderful year,
Rabbi Etan Ehrenfeld

Rav Abraham Isaac Kook (18651935)was one of the most influentialand con-
troversialrabbis of the twentieth century.A visionary writer and outstanding rabbinicleader, Kook was a philosopher, mystic, poet,
jurist, communal leader, and veritable saint. The first chief rabbi of Jewish Palestine andthe founding theologian of religious Zionism,he struggled to understand and shape hisrevolutionary times. His life and writingsresonate with the defining tensions of Jewishlife and thought.
A powerfully original thinker, Rav Kook com-bined strict traditionalism and an embraceof modernity, Orthodoxy and tolerance, piety and audacity, scholasticism and ecstasy, and passionate nationalism with profound
universalism. Though little known in theEnglish-speaking world, his life and teachingsare essential to understanding current Israelipolitics, contemporary Jewish spirituality, andmodern Jewish thought. This biography, thefirst in English in more than half a century, offers a rich and insightful portrait of theman and his complex legacy. Yehudah Mirskyclears away widespread misunderstandingsof Kooks ideas and provides fresh insightsinto his personality and worldview. Mirskydemonstrates how Kooks richly erudite,
dazzlingly poetic writings convey a breathtak-
ing vision in which the old will become new,and the new will become holy.
Yehudah Mirsky is Associate Professor of thePractice of Near Eastern and Judaic Stud-ies and the Schusterman Center for IsraelStudies at Brandeis University. He served inthe U.S. State Departments human rightsbureau, lived in Israel for the past decade, and has contributed to the New Republic, theEconomist, and many other publications.
We are honored to have Yehuda Mirsky asone of our visiting scholars. He will spend aShabbat with us at KCT on May 8-9, 2015.

Excellent. . . . Neither current Israeli politicsnor contemporary Jewish spirituality can beaccurately understood without addressingRabbi Kooks legacy. The book brings toEnglish readers the life story of Rabbi Kook, along with an explanation of his religious
philosophy, in language as clear as any-thing I have ever read about Rabbi Kooksthought.Canadian Jewish News
While some books offer a good read, andothers encapsulate groundbreaking scholar-ship, Yehudah Mirskys Rav Kook: Mystic ina Time of Revolution manages to do both.
Jewish Week
Yehudah Mirskys superb new biography ofthe great 20th century Jewish philosopherand mystic is a huge achievement. He givesa gripping, panoramic narrative of the arc ofRav Kooks life, from childhood in a smallWhite Russian village to becoming the firstChief Rabbi of Mandate Palestine, against avividly rendered backdrop of the tumultu-ous history of Kooks times.Julian Sinclair,

It is No Dream: the Life of Theodor Herzl (2012)
November 15, 2014 VVV
It Is No Dream: The Life of Theodor Herzl, ex-
plores the life and times of Theodor Herzl, father of
the modern state of Israel. Narrated by Academy
Award-winner, Sir Ben Kingsley and starring Acad-
emy Award-winner Christoph Waltz as the voice
of Theodor Herzl. The lm examines how Herzl, a
well-known journalist and playwright, an assimilated,Budapest-born Jew, horried by the Dreyfus trial in
Paris and the anti-Semitism he saw spreading across
Europe, took upon himself the task of attempting to
create a Jewish homeland in Palestine against all odds.
Over the span of eight years, Herzl organized and led
a worldwide political movement that within fty years
led to the establishment of the state of Israel. The lm
follows Herzl as he meets with Kings, Prime Minis-
ters, Ambassadors, a Sultan, a Pope and government
ministers from Constantinople to St. Petersburg, from
Paris to Berlin, from Vienna to Vilna in his quest to
build a Jewish nation.
Winston Churchill: Walking With Destiny(2010)
December 20, 2014VVV1/2
Winston Churchill: Walking With Destiny, focuses on
the years 1940 and 1941, when the Swastika ew
over continental Europe. Only England with her back
to the wall, under Winston Churchill, remained de-
ant.
Walking With Destinyhighlights Churchills years in
the political wilderness, his early opposition to Adolf
Hitler and Nazism, and his support for Jews under
threat by the Nazi regime. As historian John Lukacs
explains, Churchill may not have won the War in
1940, but without him, the War most certainly would
have been lost.
Sir Martin Gilbert, historical consultant for the lm
and Churchills ofcial biographer, adds that had
Churchills warnings about Nazi Germanys racial poli-
cies towards Jews been heeded in the early 1930s,
the Holocaust may never have occurred.
The lm examines why Winston Churchills legacy
continues to be relevant in the 21st Century and
explores why his leadership remains inspirational to
current day political leaders and diplomats.
Lonely Man of Faith(2006)
February 21, 2015VVVV
Lonely Man of Faithis a new documentary lm on
the life and legacy of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik,
the intellectual leader of Modern Orthodox Juda-
ism in 20th Century America. Throughout his life, in
Europe, New York and Boston, he struggled to forge
a path between Jewish tradition and the modern age,
an ordeal that frequently resulted in loneliness. His
impact was tremendous but his legacy was fairly
complicated.
Against the Tide(2009)
April 25, 2015VVV1/2
The Story of America during the Holocaust
Against the Tide is a compelling lm that documents
what happened in the United States during the
Holocaust, highlighting how a young activist, Peter
Bergson, challenged Washington and the establish-
ment Jewish organizations to demand that the rescue
of Europes Jews become a top priority for AmericanJews. Through a never before seen 1977 interview,
Bergson gives a rst-hand account of what occurred.
The more successful he became in attracting support
from important non-Jewish members of Congress and
Hollywood personalities such as Ben Hecht, Edward
G. Robinson and Paul Muni, the more threatened and
resentful Jewish establishment leaders became. Only
the ultra Orthodox Vaad Hatzala, led by Rabbis Aaron
Kotler and Eliezer Silver worked with him.
Against the Tideaddresses the attitudes of President
Roosevelt and his senior advisors, who used the pre-
text of winning the war against the Nazis to block any
Jewish immigration to the U.S. and juxtaposes the
events in America with heart-wrenching heroic storiesof the doomed Jews of Europe and the leaders of Pol-
ish Jewry who had faith that their powerful brothers
and sisters in the United States would somehow be
able to save them.
Unlikely Heroes(2003)
Tisha Baav, July 26, 2015VVVV
Narrated by Academy Award-winner Sir Ben Kings-
ley, Unlikely Heroeschronicles the yet untold stories
of Jewish resistance and individual heroism through-
out the Nazi Holocaust. The lm utilizes rare lm and
photos discovered in archives across Europe, and
enhanced by weeks of newly lmed sequences in
the locations where many of these stories actuallyoccurred.
For most people, the idea of Jewish resistance or
deance during the Holocaust is limited to the hero-
ism of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising and a few isolated
acts throughout World War II. Contrary to the view of
some that Jews caught in the terror of Hitlers Europe
were passive, Moriah Films latest documentary fea-
ture presents previously unknown stories of extraor-
dinary men and women who exemplied the highest
level of courage and human dignity during the most
desperate days of the Holocaust.
Unlikely Heroeshighlights seven extraordinary people
whose unique and inspiring stories will add a new
chapter to the story of Jewish resistance:
Pinchas Rosenbaum - a rabbis son who saw his
entire family perish and then joined the underground
to rescue Jews.
Willy Perl - an Austrian Jew who, in 1938, deed SS
Second Lieutenant Adolf Eichmann by going over his
head to his superiors in Berlin with a fantastic scheme
to allow Jews to go to Palestine illegally.
Friedl Dicker Brandeis - the artist who shared her

gift with the children of Theresienstadt and taught them to
express their pain through art.
Leon Kahn who, after witnessing his sister and fathers
murder and then almost his entire village by the Nazis entire
village by Lithuanian collaborators, he went on to join the
partisans in the forests of Poland, Russia and Lithuania.
Robert Clary the well-known actor who, following the Nazi
occupation of his native France, was deported to several
concentration camps.
Recha Sternbuch - a devoutly Orthodox Jew, the daughter
of a rabbi, living in neutral Switzerland who led a rescue
effort that brought hundreds of refugees to her small town
and who sheltered thirty people in her own home.
Anna Heilman - Along with one of her sisters and her par-
ents, Anna Heilman was deported to Auschwitz and became
part of a plot to steal gunpowder that eventually led to the
destruction of Birkenaus infamous Crematorium #4.

FOODAshkenazi-style cholent was first mentioned in 1180,in the writings o Rabbi Yitzhak o Vienna. In the shtetls o
Europe, religious neighborhoods in Jerusalem and othercities in Israel beore the advent o electricity and cooking
gas, a pot with the assembled but uncooked ingredients was
brought to the local baker beore sunset on Fridays. Te
baker would put the pot with the cholent mixture in his
oven, which was always kept fired, and amilies would come
by to pick up their cooked cholent on Saturday mornings.
Te same practice was observed in Morocco, where black
pots o shina placed overnight in bakers ovens and then
delivered by bakers assistants to households on Shabbat
morning. Te unique cooking requirements o cholent were
the inspiration or the invention o the slow cooker.
