Buy vs Build in House

• WCF chose to “build” or “tweak” to allow access to existing programs/systems through iPad

– Lower Cost

– Smaller Learning Curve

– Data Security

– Multiple ways to access data needed (email and files)


The Challenge: Security vs Productivity

• The concern of WCF IT: Insecure data on a mobile device.

• The solutions:

– Contain data in secure environment on mobile device (Good Apps)

– Provide secure access to WCF systems by multi‐factor authentication (VMware Horizon View and Microsoft Multi‐factor Authentication)

SUMS: “Safety/Underwriting Management System”

• Lotus Notes App designed and maintained in house

• Advantages: App is constantly evolving to meet needs/wants – cutting edge stuff can be added as we go. (Examples: WCF ErgoTools, Safety Culture Assessment Online, S&H Injury Analysis, Severe Injury/Fatality Potential Analysis, etc.)

• Disadvantages: Lotus Notes – Lifespan?

VMWare Horizon View• Virtual Windows 7 (soon to be Windows 10) Desktop

• Provides secure connection and access to WCF systems and programs

• Advantages: Security and ability to access existing systems and programs.

• Disadvantage: unavailable where cell coverage is not available, multifactor authentication makes it less convenient.

Good Apps

• Good– Secure – data on device is within the Good “container”

– Immediate access to files, email, etc.

– Ability to edit and save office documents and view most files.

• Not so Good– Office apps available for Good are not as “good” as Keynote, Numbers, Pages.

Observations

• Some use the iPad to be more productive – some don’t

• Good apps are Good and Bad!

• This approach skipped development time, but still required setup and testing by IT and a select number of field consultants and managers

• Learning curve for iPad and Good Apps, but not so much for virtual desktop.

We have been using the iPads since April 2014

Our IT is testing the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 and is planning to upgrade laptops to Surface Pro 4 with Windows 10!

We’ll see how that goes!
