On Wednesday 4 March, 20 boys from the Junior School performed in our annual Voice and Piano Recital in the concert hall. There was a delightful selection of solo songs by Schubert, Vaughan Williams, Buchanan, Schram, Jenkyns, Marsh and Schumann. There were also two vocal duets, Offen-bach’s famous Barcarolle and ‘I waited for the Lord’ by Mendelssohn. The four solo pianists performed some sophisticated music for their young ages – Handel’s Air and variations ‘The Harmonious Blacksmith’, Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in B flat major from WTC Book 1, Chopin’s Nocturne in E, Op 62 No 2 and Bridge’s The Prince from ‘A Fairy Tale’ H128 3’. We also heard five delightful piano duets – Jesu joy of man’s desiring by Bach (ar-ranged by Duck), Gottes Zeit ist der allerbeste Zeit by Bach (arranged by Kurtag), Chanson de Matin by Elgar (arranged by Cornick), Silent Woods, Op 68 No 5 by Dvorak and the funfilled, energetic Eine Kleine Yiddishe Nachtmusik by Gorb (arranged by Appleby), which ended the concert. This was a most civilised and enjoyable evening with all boys performing with great care and commitment. They also each introduced their pieces with insightful introductions, which added immeasurably to the enjoyment of this repertoire. Bravo to all involved!

Being Eco Friendly:day to day changes

These things are things you could do every day to live a greener life

Buy things packaged with glass rather than plastic e.g. ketchup.

Try place one large order online instead of many smaller orders.

Don’t buy straws and if you must, buy a reusable

one.

Try to fix, reuse or recycle products that you buy instead of

throwing them away.

TURN IT OFF!People talk about this

regularly but how many people do it.

Eat LESS meat. You don’t have to become a vegetarian but cutting

down can make a huge difference.

Use a reusable canvas bag instead of the

plastic ones that stores sell. This reduces the amount of plastic you

are wasting.

Try to waste less water. Don’t let your tap or shower run when not used. Take a shower

over a bath if you can

neWs from the musiC sChoolOn Wednesday Concert Band, Priory Choir, King’s Brass and Guitar Ensemble took centre stage at the Priory morning assembly and provided a rare opportunity for their peers and teachers to hear them perform. On the same evening the Priory Spring Concert took place. Musicians from the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, who have been working with some of our smaller ensembles this term, performed alongside Chamber Orchestra and played a Beethoven piece.Next week there is a Rushmere Soloists’ Recital on Tuesday 11 March at 4.00pm. Parents have been notified if their son is taking part. Finally, ABSRM exams take place from 20 March. Please ensure your son is aware of his exam date and time and has his instrument, mu-sic, accompaniment and school photo card (photo identification is a new ABSRM requirement) with him on the day. Boys should arrive 15 minutes before their exam time for a warm up and this is precious time lost if it is spent hunting music, ac-companiment or even an instrument. Please do help us ensure your son is prepared and in the right frame of mind for his exam.

After the French breakfast, some pupils wrote sentences about the event, using the past tense.

Since 2007, UK households have already saved 5 million tonnes of carbon by cutting down on food waste – that’s like taking 2 million cars of the road.

40% of UK food waste ends up in landfill sites emitting methane.

The volume of EDIBLE food wasted EACH YEAR in the UK – would fill 38 million wheelie bins or 90 Royal Albert Halls.

EVERY DAY 20 million slices of bread are thrown away in UK homes. This could feed breakfast to 10 million people.

If global food waste

were a country, it

would be the third largest emitter of carbon

after China and the US.

Ensemble- A group of musicians playing together, or the cast of a play (particularly if there is no single main role).

From the Latin simul (= “at the same time”) with the prefix in.

Johnny loved playing in the Guitar Ensemble, which was far more fun than the music lessons with a seemingly endless list of scales to learn.
