    JOY IN JAYHAWK NATION

To all of you late-merging mo-torists, just in time for orange-bar-

rel season, take heart in the factthat someone is sticking up foryou.

That would be Linus L. Baker, who was ticketed last year after he

merged near the front of a line ofcars in a construction zone in Over-land Park. He fought that citationand won, but hes not stopping

there: Now he wants his victory toapply to others who he thinks wereunfairly ticketed and fined.

In a lawsuit seeking class-actionstatus, the Stilwell lawyer is chal-

lenging the way Overland Park ap-plied its no-passing zones ordi-nance in highway constructionzones, asking that the city bebanned from enforcing the law onhighways.

Not only that, he wants the city to

reimburse thousands of dollars infines and fees paid by possibly hun-dreds of drivers prosecuted under

These cars were merging recently on Kansas 7 at State Avenue in Wyandotte County. But seemingly

ever-present construction zones raise questions of law and et iquette regarding how to merge.

Merge zone? Be politezone? A twilight zone? Those late-merging drivers infuriate some of us, but seehow one motorist fought a ticket in the season of barrels.

    Mario Chalmers nailed an im-

The Kansas City schoolboard has decided the time isripe to sell its downtown head-quarters building next to theSprint Center.

The district apparently hasat least one suitor: the city.

The block could be con-verted into a City Hall annexwith a 500-plus space under-ground parking garage forSprint Center suite holders. Ifvoters approve, the city couldadd a light-rail station.

There is no reason itcouldnt be all of those things,Kansas City Mayor MarkFunkhouser said Monday. Ithas potential. There is lots toconsider and lots to explore. We have to give it serious andcareful consideration.

Al Mauro, former schoolboard president, had urged thedistrict to sell the building at
