“Beaver six, beaver seven, let’s all go to beaver heaven!” The sound of voices singing, throughout the Nevelle Hotel was one of the great memories that I experienced at the NY District Leadership Conference in Ellenville, NY. Since freshman year, I have been a member of Key Club at Wagner HS but I have never seen such a large group of students who were so dedicated and passionate about serving their community.

I had to admit that I was certainly nervous, but excited about the trip because it was Wagner’s first time going to the leadership conference. I learned much information about leadership, communication, organizational and decision making skills at one of the many seminars that were held. Most importantly, I met other key clubbers who shared their successful ideas with others so that, as a whole, the NY district Key Club could reach the goal decided that year. No other event could compare to the talent show because it was a showcase that proved that even students who helped out in their community were also really gifted people who

same compassion for reaching out to help the community and also the leadership potential each carries

regardless of age, size, gender, and race. Everyone was also friendly, creative, and most importantly, open to share ideas with other key clubs from all corners of the New York District. There were also workshops available throughout the day that gave insights, trainings, recommendations, and sources at the spot. Although there were only five of us, we still worked up a plan so that we could bring as much as possible back to our club. From the workshops I attended, I learned of life beyond Key Club such as Circle-K and Kiwanis, Kiwanis projects such as Kamp Kiwanis, major projects such as Going Green and others. Other than workshops, there were also presentations displayed by other key clubs sharing their unique projects

FIRST PREPARING FOR OUR FUTURE

By: Ms. Hermus As a first year advisor to our Key Club, I had no idea what the magnitude of this experience would be. To see students who thrive off of serving their school and community provides me with a sense of fulfillment far beyond the classroom experience. However, it wasn’t until attending the Annual Leadership Training convention that I understood how deep the principles behind Key Club are and how many opportunities are available to those who are participants. I never saw such excitement in young people for the sake of serving the community, God, and all of those in need. We all learned the power of young minds eager to become leaders and the value of networking to accomplish service goals. As a group we

2008-2009 PRESIDENT EMILY ZHONG

This year, Susan E. Wagner's Key Club, attended the NY District Key Club convention at the Nevele Hotel on the last weekend of March 2009, and I was lucky to be part of the first batch. On Friday March 27, I departed with the club’s young and energetic advisor, Ms. Jennifer Hermus, the promising and hardworking president elect for 2009-2010 Veronica Lai, public relation committee leader Brianna Chung, and dedicated member Grace Zhang. Before going to the convention, I only had two main goals: to support Debora Kim, (the first Lt Governor from our club), and to gather as much knowledge and ideas to help expand SEW Key Club. The convention gave so much that I returned to the club with new ideas, better knowledge about the international aspect of Key Club and its functions, friends, goals, motivation, so much that it is endless. Everyone there share the

for fundraising as well as their successes. On Sunday afternoon, everyone gave hugs and contact information before departure. Although the weekend seemed short, we felt as if we all have been friends for quite some time. It was like a bittersweet scene yet as each of us left we were leaders with fresh ideas to bring back to our own club.

“Whoo! We’re here! We’re here!” We finally arrived at the Nevelle Grande Resort in Ellenville, New York after a 2½ hour bus ride! Being that this year was the first year Wager has had anyone go to this Leadership Training Conference, all of us were extremely excited. The conference lasted about 2 days but it wasn’t JUST 2 days, it was THE 2 days! In those 2 days I was informed of many things I didn’t know existed about key club and I learned that we’re not alone. Everyone there was there to make a difference. They were the people who have their minds set on putting matters into their own hands not alone, but together. I’ve always thought wow, we raise money to help causes but it’s not that much but what I didn’t notice was how key club was international. Even if it’s only that tiny bit, it counts towards that big goal. Many things caught my attention but a big one was the penny war! This “war” was between the divisions so it was a fun yet great way to raise money. The goal of the war is to collect the most money by pennies for

dimes, quarters, or any bill into your container your total will be subtracted by a certain amount of money. The catch is, you can drop whatever you want into whichever divisions container! By the end of our 2 days, everything seemed worth it. Whether it was the multiple number of times we panted from rushing back and forth to change into the many different outfits in each day to our feet forming blisters from wearing heels, it was worth it.

SUPPORTING MEMBER GRACE ZHANG

Attending the 61st annual LTC conference at the Nevelle Grande Resort this year has definitely given me a new approach on the entire outlook of Key Club International. Upon arriving in the Nevelle Grande Resort in Ellenville, I attended the “meet and greet” which introduced me to many Key Clubbers whom I would be spending that weekend with. It was such a great experience to simply meet so many new people who were so different yet

Key Clubs and we shared our ideas, experiences and introduced each other to various events we’ve participated in. Although being an active member of Key Club since my freshmen year, I was never fully aware of how prevalent Key Clubs were globally. I was especially surprised to learn that there are over 250,000 members in the 5,000 clubs in 28 countries overseas providing about 12 million hours of service yearly. Prior to this convention, I had always thought that Key Club was a small organization only within New York. It was really rewarding to know that there are so many other clubs out there similar to ours who want to better their communities and are just as committed to serving their community as we are. Besides the informative seminars held that weekend however, there were also many fun events such as the talent show, penny’s war, and my favorite, the Governor’s ball. This event, the Governor’s ball was a formal dance held on our last night to say farewell to everyone. Of course, we were all upset to leave Ellenville but at the same time, we were more excited to bring back the knowledge we’ve learned there and incorporate
