Raven the Writer

KC Hall’s latest series of paintings were created over the span of 3 months with a deeper focus on his past graffiti work. At one point in his life graffiti was the absolute core of all Hall did artis-tically. However, once introduced to Northwest Coast formline it ignited and informed a new light for Hall. Recently the old light of graffiti was re-lit, and once again became the main source and power and grew into the new heart of his artistic existence. Graffiti, much like the raven, came back around and tried to steal the light entirely again.

Urban Native Youth Association

Urban Native Youth Association (UNYA) was formed in 1988 to address concerns facing Indige-nous youth, at a time when growing numbers of young people began leaving reserves for the city. Thirty years later, young people continue to arrive in Vancouver with few job skills, minimal train-ing or education, and little or no knowledge of where to go for help. UNYA is meeting these needs by providing a wide range of services, resources, and opportunities that support Vancouver’s Indigenous youth to excel. Today, UNYA delivers 20+ programs, with 175+ volunteers, 100 staff, and more than 300 community partners.

Biography

KC Hall was born in Bella Bella, BC, and was raised in East Vancouver. He is the grandson of hereditary Chief Irene (Wakas) Brown. At a very young age, KC always had an interest in illustration. In high school, he developed a passion for handwriting, lettering, and graffiti. After graduation, he began creating work on a larger scale, including paintings and drawings.

While he was enrolled in the Northwest Coast Jewelry Program, KC became inspired by Nisga’a artist Robert Tait and the visual language of Northwest Coast formline. In 2016, KC designed and presented a blanket to Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge while the royals were on a visit to BC. Currently, KC is creating work that can be described an unique and free-spirited. He is successfully combining traditional Northwest coast design elements with his own distinctive style.
