NEW DELHI, Aug 6:
India has not put forth anyinitiative for repatriation of theKohinoor diamond as culturalproperties taken out of the coun-try prior to the independencecannot be claimed on the groundof violation of law, theGovernment said today.
In a written reply to RajyaSabha, Minister of State forCulture Shripad Naik said theCulture Ministry or Archaeolo-gical Survey of India has not putforth any initiative for repatria-tion of the Kohinoor diamond.
The Minister was replying toa question on whether theGovernment had taken any ini-tiative for repatriation ofKohinoor diamond from the ille-gal possession of BritishGovernment through any bilat-
eral mechanism or sought UNintervention or undertook legalsteps in this regard.
“The cultural property takenout prior to India’s independencecannot be claimed on the groundof violation of any law. The issueis not covered under theUNESCO Convention on theMeans of Prohibiting and Preven-ting the Illicit Import, Export andTransfer of Ownership of CulturalProperty (1970),” he added. (PTI)
