Please help us kick off KBIA’s 103rd season! During Week 1, no membership fee is required to register for classes.

The Kennebunk Beach Improvement Association will soon be back on the beach for our 103rd season of summer sun and fun. In our 2013 Registration Guide you will find our listing of the recreational adventures and enrichment activities we offer to children of all ages at our picturesque waterfront property.

Classes are open to KBIA members, and membership is open to the public. Membership also includes many fun family events, including twice-daily free-swim sessions for enrolled campers, Wednesday night campfire beach barbecue followed by movie nights, as well as family sailing and kayaking on weekends.

Whether your family has spent summers here for years, or you are checking us out for the first time, we encourage everyone to experience summer here at KBIA — the way summer should be!

Swinging good timesThis year we have regrouped our golf classes to better suit different abilities.• Beginner Golf, offered for an hour each day, will offer off-course instruction in put-ting, chipping, and other shots. • Girls-only Golf, a one-hour course, is offered to girls who are more comfortable in a gender-specific class.• Advanced Golf, spanning 1.5 hours, will feature smaller class sizes and more time on the course.

Jump into new swim classOur new Junior Lifeguarding class, a one-hour daily course, will introduce young swimmers to the skills and knowledge that are crucial to running a safe pool. Class is instructional only (does not earn certifica-tion) and will prepare students to take a Red Cross class when they are old enough.

team up in the poolMuch like our Sailing and Tennis Teams, KBIA’s new Swim team will compete against area swimmers. One-hour daily instruction will also help swimmers refine their strokes and help keep them in shape!

Local artistic inspirationUp in the art loft, this year we will offer a new class called Maine Artists. Each week students will study a different local artist, learning his or her background and influ-ences as they relate to Southern Maine and our community. The students will experiment with the media and influential styles of each artist.

It’s hammer timeWe have expanded our Woodworking options as well this year. We will have two options for older kids:• Boat Building students will work col-lectively and collaboratively to construct a boat for KBIA. In Model Building, kids will build their own model boat to take home at the end of the week.

Go for the gustoInspired by our Sand Creations class for younger children, Sand Castle Building this year will be for older kids who want to cre-ate HUGE structures at the beach.

Go on an adventure!KBIA Adventures is a program that keeps children ages 5 and older actively engaged in between their KBIA classes. In addition to providing fun activities, the staff is responsible

for dropping off and picking up children from their classes. The staff is also responsible for keeping Adventures kids properly hydrated and protected from the sun.

Weekly enrollment in KBIA Adventures is available for full or half days. Daily arrangements are available with permission of the Program Administrator at a cost of $35 for a full day or $24 for half days. Enrollment is limited.

In order to participate you must register and pay for the following:

Minimum Class Sign-up / Half Days: 3 classes Minimum Class Sign-up / Full Days: 4 classes

Weekly Rates for 5 days: Full Days 8 AM to 4 PM $150 Half Days 8 AM to noon $95 Half Days Noon to 4 PM $95

For your child’s safety, supervisors can only release your child to adults designated by you in writing on the 2013 Contact Information & Release Form. IDs for pick-up are required. Lunch, snacks and plenty of water must be provided; we cannot offer refrigeration. Late fees are charged at a rate of $10 for each 15 minutes or fraction thereof.

Bundle up the kids! Bundled Class Schedule for Ages 4-10 Back by popular demand, classes are bundled together to give children a three-hour (or, with tennis, four-hour) period of KBIA programming with staff supervision included between classes.

We have continued to offer a Tennis option to the morning and afternoon bundles. We have additional court times at Edgcomb, and have two tennis classes for kids ages 4 to 10.

morning bundle, plus tennis: If your child takes the 12:30 to 1 PM tennis class as part of the bundle, parents should drop off their child at 9 AM at KBIA and pick their child up at Edgcomb at 1 PM. KBIA staff will supervise your child changing clothes, eating lunch, and walking them to Edgcomb in time for their lesson.

Afternoon bundle, plus tennis: If your child takes the 12 to 12:30 PM tennis class as part of the bundle, parents should drop off their child at 12 PM, dressed in tennis whites, at Edgcomb and pick their child up at KBIA at 4 PM. KBIA staff will supervise children changing clothes, eating lunch, and walking them to KBIA after their tennis lesson.

Bundled schedules for Weeks 1-8: Morning bundle classes offer a choice of swimming or reading; the afternoon bundle class only offers swimming. Swim class includes a half-hour swim lesson and a half-hour of supervised time to change clothes and play. Indicate your preference for either Swimming or Reading on the Registration Form.

We also offer bundled classes for ages 4 to 10 every week in the afternoon. Swimming is split into two groups, by age and ability, but the other classes in this bundle will be multi-aged.

Reminder: Classes are limited to 12 children per age group for each bundled time period, so register early! All bundled classes are still available for individual sign-ups. KBIA cannot provide supervision outside of class time for children unless they are enrolled in a bundle class or Adventures. We have made every effort to minimize class conflicts with bundle schedules.

our youngest stars Starfish for ages 4 and 5 is a weekly morning drop-off program designed for preschool age children. The program meets daily from 8:30 to 11:30 AM. A Starfish morning includes a 30-minute swim lesson, story time, nature time and a craft project. The Starfish program is staffed at a 4-to-1 ratio to ensure appropriate supervision of children at all times.

Come sail away!KBIA offers sailing options for all ages. We have listed sailing classes in this Registration guide with the following age restrictions; however, please speak with us if you have any questions about what class is right for your child. Stand up and paddle Building on its popularity last summer, we have expanded our schedule for Stand Up Paddle Boarding classes this summer for ages 9 and older. In the protected cove, participants will learn the basics of this popular sport that combines a surfboard and a long paddle.

Adult swim time The pool will again be open to adults for a morning lap swim. Hours will be 7 to 8 AM Monday through Friday, and open to members at a weekly or summer rate.

Counselor in training (CIt) The CIT program for ages 13 to 14 emphasizes on-the-job training, supervised instruction, and lessons in CPR and First Aid. CIT classes will be divided between 13- and 14 year-olds. New this year, we will offer a combined 13/14-year-old afternoon CIT class for those who have a schedule conflict with the morning classes. Each CIT will be assigned 12 or more flexible hours of service activities per week. CITs are required to register for the CIT class, as well as complete a CIT application (available online at www.kbia.net). CITs must enroll in at least two consecutive weeks, but are encouraged to take as many weeks as possible.

on the court Choose from the following tennis options:

Membership

We welcome everyone to join! In order to be eligible to register for KBIA classes for Weeks 2-8, you must be a KBIA member and pay the annual membership fee. One membership is required per family, which is defined as one or more generations living in the same household, with members of the younger generation being direct descendants of the older generation. Non-members are welcome to sign up for classes for Week 1 without paying a membership fee. For information, please review the enclosed Membership Form.

Class Registration & Participation

Classes fill quickly! KBIA processes memberships and class registrations as they’re received. All required forms must be complete to be processed. Returning all your required forms promptly will help you secure the classes and schedule you selected. Please return required forms by USPS first-class mail; do not leave required forms in the KBIA mailbox. Office registration, priority/overnight delivery and mail requiring a signature receipt are only accepted on-site during office hours beginning June 17, 2013.

Class & Safety Requirements

In order to attend classes, each child must be the specified age for their age group by June 15, 2013. Unless a child is enrolled in Adventures or the Bundled Class schedule, KBIA does not provide supervision of children outside of scheduled class time. KBIA has an open-campus policy. KBIA faculty and staff are not responsible for the supervision or accountability of children when they are not attending KBIA classes. KBIA assumes responsibilities for children once they arrive at class and for the duration of the class. At drop-off, parents or guardians can indicate to the class instructor the individual who is responsible for picking up the child or if the child is allowed to leave independently. Children arriving to class independently will be allowed to leave class independently.

non-discrimination Policy

KBIA is committed to supporting the goal of equal opportunity and does not discriminate based on race, color, sex, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, religion, age, ancestry or national origin, status as a veteran, status as a whistleblower, or any other status protected by law in the hiring of counselors and staff or in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarships, and other camp-administered programs.

Parent visits

KBIA has a beautiful campus, and we encourage you to enjoy the unique surroundings. Tables, chairs, and umbrellas are for your use. However, if you would like to visit your child’s “classroom,” please contact the instructor or Executive Director to set up a convenient day and time. Sometimes parents drop in unannounced to chat with a teacher. While such practice may seem harmless and even friendly, it is often disruptive to the classroom routine. Under no circumstance should a teacher leave a class to have more than a cursory exchange, and under no circumstance should a parent initiate any kind of lengthy, intense, or negative interaction with a teacher, counselor, or counselor-in-training (“CIT”) who is working with a class. Other than to drop off or pick up a child, please refrain from entering the docks, swimming pool, Adventures Tent, Smith House or classrooms in the Strong Cottage when camp is in session.

Conduct and values

We expect campers to show respect for and consideration of the feelings and welfare of others. Rules and discipline start with the premise, and with the firm belief, that self-esteem is the foundation that nurtures both respect for others and personal honesty. Trust is the cornerstone of our community. KBIA expects every member of its community, child and adult, to demonstrate concern for others. Therefore, we share and practice the following standards:

• We respect the dignity and individual needs of other human beings. No one, neither adult nor child, has the right to mistreat another person. This includes name calling, ethnic, racial or gender-based slurs, bullying and inappropriate teasing;

• When we make decisions about personal and camp matters, we accept the consequences for those decisions;

• We respect KBIA’s property and the property of others; and

• We strive to serve and contribute to the welfare of the camp, the Cove, Mother’s Beach and the Kennebunk Beach community.

Behavior and discipline

KBIA is located next to the ocean, and many of our classes are on the water. Safety is of the utmost concern and we expect members of the KBIA community (campers, counselors, staff, and parents) to abide by the following principles: care for self, care for others and care for one’s environment. We demonstrate these principles through the qualities of honesty, self-control, and responsibility.

A child who exhibits inappropriate behavior will discuss the matter with the instructor, and other students if required, and together make a decision about the appropriate consequence. Instructors help students to understand the boundaries of appropriate behavior and we ask parents to support these efforts by reinforcing them at home.

In the case of a serious infraction, or repeated offense, the Executive Director will become involved and contact the parents to set up a meeting. Suspension or even dismissal from the program may be necessary when other solutions are exhausted, or when a child’s behavior creates a dangerous environment or causes an undue disruption to KBIA operations. Such decisions are at the discretion of the Executive Director.

Employment of Counselors

KBIA offers employment to young men and women starting at age 15. Typically, these teenagers have been campers at KBIA and have participated in the CIT program during the previous two summers. The CIT curriculum covers topics such as the basics of employment (being accountable, responsible and diligent), customer service, and safety. Any counselor, whether they have matriculated in the CIT program or are direct new hires, are expected to demonstrate these skills.

If an issue should arise regarding the performance of an employee under the age of 18, the Executive Director will attempt to resolve the issue directly with the employee. The KBIA views these incidents as opportunities to learn and develop. Yet should the problem persist, or is a major problem, the Executive Director will reach out to the parents of employees under the age of 18 to enlist their assistance with the matter. If an employee is over the age of 18, parents will not be contacted.

Educational Accommodations Statement

KBIA is not a special-needs camp and is not equipped to provide individualized educational programs for students with severe physical, cognitive, or mental disabilities. KBIA will make reasonable accommodations for known disabilities to assist the camper in meeting the behavioral performance standards of the program.

2013 REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Membership — everyone is welcome to join!

To register for KBIA classes, you must be a KBIA member. If you haven’t joined or renewed for 2013, please include a complete Membership Form and the annual fee with your registration. A completed Membership Form is also required for Week 1 participants.

Many of our classes are planned around the tide chart, so please read the schedules carefully.

Weather Warning: The weather on the waterfront can change quickly. Be sure your child has sun protection and appropriate clothing for all weather conditions. Some classes have specific physical, dress and equipment requirements. Please read the online class descriptions carefully. If you need assistance meeting class requirements, please contact the KBIA office.

Waiting List: If any of the classes you select are filled, you will be notified and your child will be placed on a waiting list. If the class does not open up, KBIA will issue a refund in the form of your original payment.

Withdrawal: If a student withdraws the week prior to the week of a scheduled class, KBIA will refund 50% of the class charge(s). If a student withdraws more than one week prior to the week of a scheduled class, KBIA will refund the full fee minus a $10 withdrawal fee per class. No refunds are offered after the close of office hours on the Friday before class begins. The Program Administrator must approve all refunds.

Class Cancellation: If KBIA cancels a class due to low enrollment, we will notify you and issue a refund in the form of your original payment.

Weather Cancellations: Many classes are weather-dependent. KBIA’s primary concern is safety. KBIA makes every attempt to provide alternative learning opportunities in the event of bad weather. Any classes that must be cancelled due to unsafe weather conditions are not refundable.

Payment: In order to be processed, all required forms must be accompanied by complete payment of the annual membership

fee and all class fees. Alternate payment plans may be available if needed; please contact the Program Administrator. KBIA accepts checks as well as MasterCard or Visa credit cards. We accept cash payments only during office hours: Monday 8 AM to 5 PM, Tuesday to Friday 9 AM to 12 PM and 1 to 4 PM, beginning June 17, 2013.

Scholarships: KBIA is a not-for-profit organization, and we’re proud to offer scholarships to children of the Kennebunk area who require financial assistance – ensuring everyone can benefit from and enjoy an inspiring, fun-filled summer. For information, contact the Executive Director.

Page 26

We have asked, and our KBIA community has answered ... again and again! Thank you!

We will be installing a new playground this June at Mother’s Beach, thanks to your generosity. In December our Board of Directors approved the measure after raising some $105,000 in donations large and small. The playground, grouped into two age-appropriate clusters of blue and tan equipment, will also maintain swings and benches for all to enjoy.

Also because of your generosity over the last three years, we have replaced the pool (2011), installed a new Adventures tent (2012) and upgraded our waterfront fleet (2012). In strong Cottage, we have also added a new fire escape, secured its foundation, upgraded its electrical system and added a fire-suppression system. Next door at Smith House, we reinforced the structure to ensure our kids are both happy and safe at KBIA!

All gifts, both large and small, have enabled us to make these changes for a better KBIA. There is still a lot of work to be done at KBIA to ensure that it will continue to benefit our children for the next century. Over the fourth and fifth year of our 100th Capital Campaign, we will be completing all of our facilities projects — none of which are as

“exciting” as the pool, boats and playground, but every bit as necessary for KBIA to be all that it can be for our children. We will also be working to restore the endowment and increase the money available for scholarships. To this end, we will be looking to our membership and friends to continue to help support KBIA and to contribute to the ongoing fundraising efforts.

So much has been achieved in the last three years; now we need to push on to the finish line so we can complete our efforts and know that we have helped fortify for future generations this great place that we all love.
