Problems, tasks and approaches in the field of drug design and development
Actual problems of drug development in Russia
• The lack of organizations capable of carrying out a full cycle of drug development -early discovery, preclinical, and clinical stages.
• Problems of financing. The reluctance of local pharmaceutical business to support venture projects, especially their clinical stages.
• High dependence on import supplies for all key products and technologies, including drugs for the treatment of socially significant diseases (cancer, diabetes, atherosclerosis, infectious diseases, etc.), under growing press of sanctions.
• Insufficient collaboration between the existing research centers.• Less than 2% of the 400 pre-clinical drug development projects financed by the
governmental budget have entered clinical phase.
Scientific and Educational Center of Pharmaceutics, KFU
Modern R&D center working in the field of drug design and development. Established in 2011-2014 in the framework of the targeted governmental program “Pharma-2020” (budget $30 mln). The total reconstructed area is 4,900 m2, including 2,730 m2 – R&D and educational facilities, and 2,170 m2 - pilot production facility.More than 150 items of equipment (total cost >$10 mln) for synthesis, screening and biological research of drug candidates.More than 100 employees, highly qualified specialists in the field of chemistry, biology, medicine and veterinary medicine. Since 2016, the Department of Medicinal Chemistry of KFU has opened a Master's Degree in medicinal chemistry.

Key tasks• A good pool of innovative projects has been created. Some of them are of a unique, breakthrough nature. It is necessary to turn them into real marketed drugs.
• The key task is to attract investments for the clinical phase of research.
• Integration efforts are needed (e.g., Association of Preclinical Research Centers).
• It is necessary to attract foreign investors (mainly the BRICS+T countries).
• State assistance is required to address actual organizational, legal, financial and other issues.
