Kaukopartiojoukot 1942-1944FINNISH LONG-RANGE RECONNAISSANCE TROOPS
When the Soviets invaded Finland during the Winter Waro 1939, the intelligence department o the Finnish militaryrecognised the need or specialized long-range reconnais-sance patrols to raid and gather intelligence deep behindSoviet lines. Te rst units were ormed and trained insecrecy, initially including three guerrilla detachments, calledHiihtosissit, or skiing guerrillas. However, the troops did notsee much action beore the Winter War ended in 1941.
KAuKOPARTIOjOuKOT 1941 - 1943During the uneasy ollowing the Winter War, the Finnssecretly continued to train and expanded their guerrilla
orce. A new type o patrol, called a Kaukopartiojoukot, orlong-range scout patrol, was ormed to conduct long-rangereconnaissance and guerrilla strikes ar behind the enemylines.
Te troops consisted o physically and mentally t volun-teers, mostly young athletes such as skiers and runners. Temissions that the patrol would undertake required calmnerves under extreme pressure and conditions. Tese skillsmade it easier or patrols to evade Soviet and NKVD (SovietMinistry o the Interior Aairs) troops.
Company-sized patrols would enter into the Soviet Unionthrough the loose Karellian ront lines on oot or by skiing.Once inside enemy lines they would establish a base o opera-tions, leaving a small unit to guard the HQ and the patrolsradio. Meanwhile, the company would break up into platoons
or squads to conduct their mission. Tese small patrols weretypically only about a platoon o troops (30-50 soldiers).
Only a ew company- and battalion-sized patrols weredeployed. Tese were ormed to conduct certain high proleoperations, such as striking well-guarded supply centres, cutting the Murmansk railway or disabling the Stalin Canal.Te patrol was occasionally reinorced or these missions
with guerrilla, Jkri(light inantry), and engineer troopsrom the regular army.
A Kaukopartiojoukot predominantly conducted reconnais-sance missions, however they were also authorised to launchraids on the enemy. ypical raids targeted small convoys,Soviet ocers, supply trains, and airelds. Tey also placedmines on important roads and railways and tapped into theSoviet communication lines to gather intelligence, whichthey immediately radioed back to HQ or analysis.
Te Soviet guard units pursued the patrols as best they could.Sometimes they would catch up with the Finnish raiders, butmore oten than not the sly Kaukopartiojoukot managed toslip away to saety thanks to superior training and a remark-able radio network. Te patrol oten knew more about theSoviets than the Soviets knew o themselves!
OTHERLONG-RANGE PATROL uNITSOther units, such as the Sissi (guerrilla) and Jkri(light inantry) conducted similar operations as theKaukopartiojoukot, but otherwise had little in common with

the long-range patrols. Tese units operated much closer tothe enemy lines and were under the command o the localarmy corps, division or regiment. Tey undertook more tra-ditional scouting and patrolling missions.
THE KAuKOPARTIOjOuKOT BATTALION
In July 1943 all o the various Kaukopartiojoukot patrolswere grouped together into Erillinen Pataljoona 4(SeparateBattalion 4). Te ull strength o the battalion was 678 menand 76 women. Tere was even an Estonian volunteer patrol
within Separate Battalion 4 that conducted missions in theirSoviet-controlled homeland.
In 1943, the battalion sent over 50 patrols behind the lines.Te missions were doubled in 1944. Te battalion sueredminimal casualties thanks to ecient radios and the intel-ligence gathered was very important and critical to Finnishmilitary, especially in the summer 1944 during the Sovietoensive.
Ater the Continuation War, Separate Battalion 4 wasdeployed against the Germans in the Lapland War beore it
was nally disbanded in November 1944.
A KAuKOPARTIOjOuKOT COmPANyOn paper the typical Kaukopartiojoukot Company at ullstrength consisted o 156 men and 15 women, but in realitythe companies never had enough personnel.
Te company was organized with three Kivrijoukkue(rife)platoons each with our Kivriryhm (rife squads) or a
total o 35 troops.
Each company also had aRadioasema(radio station) platoonwith 11 soldiers detached rom the Radioasemacompany. Tesewere in constant contact with the battalion headquarters.
Finally, each company had aHuoltojoukkue(supply) platoonwhich handled the companys logistical needs. Te 33 troops othe platoon were also expected to ght should they be needed.
SPECIAL EquIPmENTTe Kaukopartiojoukot had access to some truly innovativetechnology to help them conduct their operations. For
example, they used a chemical liquid that conused dogssense o smell so they could evade Soviet patrols. Specialsnow track mines were used to deploy small mineelds as
well as improvised explosives. Tey also acquired a number

A KAuKopArtiojouKot in FlAmes oF WAr
A Kaukopartiojoukot is elded in Flames O War as araiding orce, similar to the SAS and LRDG orces oundin Burning Empires. Te ollowing intelligence brieng willallow players to conduct all o the raid missions ound inthat publication as well as the ones ound on our website:www.FlamesOWar.com.
A Kaukopartiojoukot uses standard Finnish models. Teyought all year around and thus any o your existing Finnishmodels will work perectly. You can also use Soviet gures as
well or those troops you equip with Soviet Uniorms.
ypically, a Kaukopartiojoukotwould ace Soviet securitytroops which diered little rom the standard Strelkovybattalions used by the Soviet Union. Tey also saw action
against the Germans during the Lapland War, making themvalid opponents as well. O course, you can play against anyarmy you like!
Tis brieng can be used in Mid or Late war games, as theequipment and rating o the troops did not change betweenthe eras.
Fielding aKaukopartiojoukot is a perect way to emulate the
daring raids and missions undertaken by these elite troops.Te raids were small, usually consisting o a single platoon
with some support. Tere were also larger missions you canrecreate such as cutting the Murmansk railway. Either way, this brieng gives you everything you need to get out thereand wreak havoc on the Soviet rear areas!
o German smokeless petrol cookers in late 1943 whichhelped keep their camp concealed rom the Soviets.
Perhaps the most valuable piece o equipment in the patrolwas the small lightweight guerrilla telegraph radio called aKyynel, (literally translated as tear owing to its shape) anda simple radio receiver called a p, or stump. Tese in-novative radios kept the patrols in constant contact with HQand gave Finnish intelligence critical inormation in near
real-time.
RAdIOSANd mESSAGE ENCRyPTINGTe rst Kyynel radios were inspired by a German radiodesign which weighed 33 pounds (15kg). Other contempo-rary oreign designs weighted a lot more, usually between 22to 44 pounds (10 to 20kg).
Te Finnish developed the Model M10 in 1942 which wasully stabilized and weighed only 12 pounds (5.6 kg) withbatteries. Tis ingenious Finnish guerrilla radio was the mostadvanced one o its kind in the world.
Te radio would transmit at a requency o 3500 - 5000 kHzand had sending power o up to 0.5 Watts, depending onthe power o batteries. Tis gave the radio a range o up to435 miles (700km) in good weather.
Patrols sent encrypted messages using a simple but eectivecode pattern created exclusively or each patrol, which madeit impossible to solve without a key.
Finnish Radio Intelligence had also decrypted many Sovietcodes, which gave Kaukopartiojoukot patrols plenty o
warning should there be any possible danger in the area.
uNIFORmSANd ARmAmENT
Te patrols wore standard Finnish military uniorms.Sometimes they would use a combination o Finnish andcaptured Soviet uniorms so as to conuse enemy patrols ispotted ar away.
While ocially called rife platoons, each patrol was prima-rily armed with the highly accurate and reliable 9mm M/31SuomiSubmachine-gun. However, at least one man in the
patrol carried a rife or long-range shooting.

CAPTuREd uNIFORmSSome patrols captured Soviet uniorms to conuse theRussian troops as to their identity, oten allowing patrols toslide by the enemy undetected.
A platoon entirely equipped with Captured Uniorms must beidentied beore the enemy can shoot at it or assault it.Tese units start the game unidentied.
I a platoon equipped with Captured Uniorms shoots orlaunches an assault, they are immediately identied by allenemy platoons.
In order to identiy a platoon equipped with CapturedUniorms, an enemy platoon must attempt to shoot at it orselect it as the target or an artillery bombardment. Beorerolling to hit with the shooting platoon, roll a Skill est orthe platoon.
I they pass the Skill est, they identiy the Finnish platoonand shoot at it as normal. Te Finnish unit is now identi-ed to all enemy platoons.
I they ail, they do not identiy the unit, but may shoot atother Finnish units instead.
Aircrat cannot choose an unidentied team as the targeto an air strike.
Enemy reconnaissance teams automatically identiy aplatoon equipped with Captured Uniorms i they arewithin 8/20cm when they attempt to shoot at them.

modelling A KAuKopArtiojouKot
Like many raiding orces, a Kaukopartiojoukot oers a loto opportunity or interesting modelling challenges. Forstarters, your small orce gives you the excuse to spend a littlemore time on them than you would with normal orces. Tis
allows you to add a bit o variety and un to your elite orce.
Te Kaukopartiojoukot uses Captured Uniorms, much likethe German Brandenburgers. Tis means that you eectivelyhave two ranges o gures to choose rom when building yourorce: Finnish and Soviet (and even some German). For myorce Ive gone with a Late-war patrol to use the interestingbattleworn gure ranges (SU802 Battle Hardened StrelkovyPlatoon). Te battleworn look adds to the rugged sel-su-cient Finnish ethos that surrounds the Kaukopartiojoukot.
Te Huoltojoukkue (maintenance) Platoon is a great oppor-tunity in and o itsel. For me it was important to be able toidentiy the teams in this platoon or when they get attachedout to the Combat Platoons.
Using a ew Soviet and Finnish gures and some Germancasualties (GE822 German Casualties), I was able to puttogether a pair o medical teams or my LkintryhmSquad. I then pooled all o my troops waving hands and en-couraging men orward onto two bases or my KuljetusryhmSquad. Tese two points will make it easy or me to spot thespecial teams once they have been attached out.
In the end, its your orce, so have un with painting andmodelling beore rushing your troops into battle!
