Letter From The PublisherI recently came across something online that I thought I should share with our readers. It is especially fitting for this time of year.

Does the Bible say anything about making New Year’s resolutions?

The Bible doesn’t mention making resolutions at the beginning of a new year -- but it does urge us to examine our lives regularly, and to seek God’s help to become better persons every day. The Bible says, “Let us examine

our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord” (Lamentations 3:40).

Did you ever ask yourself why you found it so hard to keep the resolutions you used to make? One reason may have been that they weren’t realistic, or you had no clear plan for reaching them. Many New Year’s resolutions, I’m afraid, are little more than a “wish list” -- a series of things we’d like to change about our lives, but little more. They also may be very self-centered, with little thought about whether or not they are God’s will.

Another reason, however, why we fail to keep our resolutions is because we seek to reach them in our own strength instead of with God’s help. But we are spiritually and morally weak, and we will never be the people God wants us to be unless we turn to Him for the help we need. The psalmist wrote, “My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:2).

As we begin this new year, pause right now and ask God to show you what He wants to do in your life during this coming year. Resolve to grow closer to Christ every day, and with the help of His Holy Spirit to “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness” (1 Timothy 6:11).

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the staff of Katy Christian Magazine and please always remember to Keep Christ in Christmas!

We love to hear from our readers, especially around Christmas time. One story, in particular, impressed us so much that we had to share.

Chris Koehn describes a family tradition that came to life when her children were young, helping her put the “holy” back in “holidays” once and for all. Amid television commercials, wish lists, house lights and wrapping paper she had became worried that the true meaning of Christmas was being diluted. The challenge was how best to teach her little girl and boy the authentic Christmas message.

Even preschoolers can be adversely affected by commercialism, as she discovered one December.

“What is Christmas about?” she asked her little ones, curious about their knowledge of this sacred season. “It’s about presents and Santa!” her kiddos responded, adding “And baby Jesus,” as an after thought. It was

the after thought that got her thinking. “I wanted our main focus to be on Jesus’ birth - God’s wonderful gift to us,”

says Koehn. “Obviously I needed to ramp up my instruction on the true meaning of Christmas.

Her solution was brilliant. “We give gifts to one another at Christmas for three reasons,” she told her brood. “Number one, God loved us so much that he gave us Jesus, the perfect gift. Num-ber two, the Wise Men gave baby Jesus presents, and we exchange gifts just like them. And number three, Christmas is Jesus’ birthday party and

we celebrate it with presents.” Her son and daughter were all ears, soaking up

the message. The idea of Christmas as a birthday party made sense to them both.

The time came to bake Santa some cookies for Christmas Eve. However, her children had her own

plans. They wanted to make birthday cake, instead. She was floored at their suggestion! Of course! Why hadn’t she thought of that sooner? Koehn promised to bake birthday cake instead of cookies from that year forward - what better way to honor Christ’s birth than to share birthday cake? “We can leave a slice out for Santa,” the kids exclaimed, excited at the prospect.

Santa must have loved that cake very much, because he left a thank you note for the kids on Christmas morning:

Dear Carly and Hohlt,I’m so glad you shared a slice of Jesus’ birthday cake with me! Thank you so

much! I’m so glad that you know the true meaning of Christmas! Love, Santa

P. S. My real name is Saint Nick and I am Jesus Christ’s ambassador. Notice the “Christ” in “Christmas” - Jesus Christ IS Christmas!

During that special Christmas came a simple but meaningful Christmas tradition. Although her kids are now much older, to this day Koehn and her family leave birthday cake out for Santa. It’s a tradition worth shar-ing!

Katy Christian Magazine wishes you a very merry Christmas, sends you much love, and hopes you enjoy a delicious slice of birthday cake Christmas morning!

Birthday Cake for Christmas!

I hope 2012 is off to a great start for you. I’d like to ask you to join me in making it a goal to do a little extra this year. Whether that is a little extra work with your church, volunteering at your local school, joining a rotary club or assisting at a local nursing home, please consider these opportunities to give back to your community. Then, go to www.JudgeJLSmith.com and let us know what you’re doing.

Billy Simpson was a -year old kid struggling through his rst year of high school. With his grades, college was out of the question. Now, Bill is a bright young man who is excelling in his junior year at a major university and looks forward to a lifetime of opportunities and success.

Andrea Kohler started out excited about school, but by the time she began third grade, she was discouraged, doubting herself and beginning to withdraw. Today, Andy is enjoying fourth grade, getting fantastic grades, and showing renewed self-con dence.

What made the di erence for these two and thousands of others just like them? e power of brain training.

“Brain training is a system of highly targeted exercises used to change your brain’s capacity to think and learn,” says David Midki , owner and director of the new LearningRx Brain Training center in Cinco

Ranch. “Brain Training succeeds where tutoring and other programs have failed. Science has proven that brain training can strengthen learning and reading skills and increase iq.”

Rather than tutoring or academics, LearningRx focuses on improving cognitive skills—the foundation for all learning. Strengthening cognitive skills such as Processing Speed, Working Memory, Auditory Processing, Visual Processing, Logic & Reasoning and Long-Term Memory will naturally produce faster and easier learning. In at least of students, common learning struggles are directly connected to speci c weak brain skills.

“As an educator, I can say that LearningRx is much di erent than tutoring. is program focuses on core cognitive skills that enable kids to learn more e ciently. LearningRx o ers e ective, a ordable programs that help students of all ages perform better across the board. With LearningRx, I have a unique opportunity to help them boost their con dence in life and learning. What more could I ask for?”

Not only business partners, Dr. Brett and Dr. Ryann are brothers in a family-oriented Katy Proud business — Grand Vision Center. They

were raised with three additional brothers by hard working, middle class parents and appreciate their roots. Both are gradu-ates of University of Houston - College of Optometry, graduating just one year apart from each other.

Their interest in eye care began early on when their father exposed them to optics and the optical industry. This inspiration led them to careers in therapeutic optometry. They are also optometric glaucoma specialists and provide compre-hensive eye care to adults and children.

Dr. Brett is a family man and will be celebrating a 25th wedding an-niversary. He and his wife, Fatima, have three children. Their oldest,

Brittany, is a college student and chip off the old block. She plans to follow in her dad’s footsteps and apply at the University of Houston - College of Optometry after completing her undergraduate studies. She’s been helping at Grand Vision since the age of 16. Son Shane is a senior at Faith West Academy and enjoys sports. He, too, works at Grand Vision and is interested in the family business. Brooke, the youngest, has other plans and is an artist, like her mother.

Dr. Ryann is married to wife, Nikki, an esthetician. He appreciates the sacrifices made by his parents as they raised a large family. The expense of undergraduate and optometric schools was significant and through grants and scholarships he and his brother completed their educations. For this reason, since 2006 Grand Vision has been proud to partner with Katy ISD schools and provide graduating students the “Always Focusing on Katy” Scholarship. Four $1,000 scholar-ships are awarded to deserving Katy ISD students who meet the requirements and submit completed applications.

The “Always Focusing on Katy” scholarship program is in effect to students graduating in the current calendar year. Interestingly, the GPA requirement starts at 2.5 with a maximum GPA of 3.5. “We felt it important for the scholarship requirements to be reasonable so more students are able to qualify. We know some individuals are late bloomers and hope our scholarship can help nurture their academic growth,” says Dr. Brett. After all, through commitment, dedication and generous grants, he graduated Cumme Laude from the Univer-

sity of Houston – College of Optometry.

Being Katy Proud, Grand Vision Center has partnered with Katy ISD and the YMCA since 2002 to provide eye care and eyewear needs to students whose parents are unable to afford services. Since they began the effort, Grand Vision Center has provided a clearer future to over 800 students and continues to do so every day. Stu-dents qualifying for the reduced or free lunch program at school also qualify for “Glasses for Katy Kids” program. Additional information is available at local Katy ISD school nurse’s offices.

From corrective lenses through detecting and treating more serious eye conditions, Grand Vision provides personalized eye care includ-ing: comprehensive eye exams, eye care for infants and children, treatment of ocular diseases, diabetic eye care, emergency eye care, treatment of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), treatment of eye injuries, on-site retina specialist consultation/services, low vision aid for the visually impaired, contact lenses and eyeglasses (see our Opti-cal Shop section), online contact lens ordering, and online appoint-ment scheduling.

When someone you love dies, even when you have strong faith and confidence that your loved one is at peace and experiencing joy in the presence of the Lord, your grief can be intense. The mortal part of you can deeply miss the conversations, smiles, hugs, and opportuni-ties to give and receive love from the one who is gone.

The Christmas season is a time when many Christians celebrate Je-sus’ birth and rejoice in his gift of Life by giving gifts. We put special effort into thinking of those nearest and dearest, considering plans to be together and thoughtful gifts. We also enjoy being remembered. The emphasis on family times underscores the absence of loved ones.

About Grief

If you are grieving, you may be wondering, “What’s normal?” or

“How do I cope?” If you are reading this article because you are grieving a recent loss you may be experiencing a multitude of feel-ings, or you may be in shock and feel numb. Just a few “normal” early grief experiences include difficulty with memory, learning, and planning, insomnia, appetite changes, sudden, unexpected, over-whelming, knee- buckling feelings of sorrow, anger, and helplessness. These moments become fewer as time goes on. If your loved one died after a long, painful illness, you may feel relieved that his or her suf-fering is over.

These feelings are as normal and natural as the feeling of pain when you touch a hot stove. In time, with faith, perseverance, and abid-ing love, you will grow stronger because of this pain, just as a weight lifter builds strength with heavier weights.

You might be feeling survivor’s guilt. “Why didn’t I die, instead of him or her?” is one example. A number of combat veterans experi-ence this painful feeling. If this is your grief, ask yourself, “If I had died instead, would I want my brothers in arms to feel the way I do? What would I want for them?”

new this holiday season. Families some-times break out of the normal holiday rou-tine to take a trip, or offer service to those less fortunate. Of course, hearts remain heavy, but new memories and moments of laughter, love, and joy are possible. Here are some additional ideas for coping dur-ing the holidays: • Accept the pain in your heart and remember the shortest verse in the Bible, “Jesus wept.” John 11:35• Create a “memory space” in your home, with mementos and encouraging scrip-tures, such as - The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18 - He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Psalm 147:3 - Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10 - I am able do all things through Christ who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13 - Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Matthew 5:4• Have a specific plan for activities on the days you think will be the most difficult

• Create a special ornament, wreath, Christmas tree, or flower ar-rangement in memory of your loved one• Have a “talking circle” time, from the Native American tradition, to share stories about your loved one with others• Take care of yourself…exercise and eat well • Reach out to others who are alone

Ministry Tips

Most people do not know what to say or do when a friend or loved one is grieving. My first recommendation is to pray for the opportu-nity and words to encourage and support someone who is grieving. Second, become familiar with the short list of Do’s and Don’ts below. These simple recommendations are the result of years of feedback from those who grieve.

Do— • Speak of the deceased• Ask how they are doing • Ask what is the hardest part of the day• Ask how they learned of the death • Invite them to your home• Listen and “reflect back” their thoughts• Check on them on birthdays, anniversaries (including the death date), and, during the first 2 years, check in at least monthly• If a parent dies with young children, offer practical help to assist with caring for the children and the household • Send cards in the mail • Be aware of your own experiences with grief and loss, and recognize when these feelings are “triggered” by another’s loss • Recognize that loving care does not mean taking on another’s pain…. it does not reduce the other’s pain• If someone is suicidal, get help for them immediately

Don’t—• Say you know how they feel—you do not know• Tell them how they should feel• Tell your own grief story to them during the early months of grief • Tell them what they should do regarding the deceased’s personal items• Say that the loved one is better off in heaven or try to explain away their pain

Final Thoughts

The loss of a loved one is painful at any time. The holidays sometimes increase the sense of loss and pain. This is a time to be deliberate, to be thoughtful, and to “love your neighbor as yourself ”, remember-ing the “as yourself ” part, too. Be as compassionate toward yourself during this time as you would be toward your neighbor. When your pain blocks out all the light of hope, please give others the oppor-tunity to hold the light for you. Reach out for help before you are overwhelmed with grief. Your church family, pastor, friends, family members, and others may be there for you. If you need more assis-tance, contact a therapist with expertise in grief counseling.

Sierra KempClassification: SeniorFaith West Academy

The first thing you might ask is how she got such a beautiful name. “My mom and dad had their honeymoon in the Sierra Mountains at Lake Tahoe.

They liked the name.” The second thing you might ask is ‘are you a Black Belt?’, since her dad owns and operates one of the largest Karate training facilities (AKA Tae Kwon-Do) in Katy. She responds by stating that she too shy to compete in that type of competition. But when it comes to competition she takes it to the court. Sierra has been playing organized basketball since she was in the third grade. Now the guard for her high school team says of her favorite memories; “Is when we (Lady Eagles Basketball Team) went to State (reaching the Final Four) during my freshman and sophomore years.” “Sierra leads her team to always do better. She is our practice captain. She is the most coachable player I have ever worked with,” stated her high school basketball coach Eddie Bombita.

Sierra is a member of the National Honor Society and holds office with both the Fellowship of Christian Athletics and Mu Alpha Theta chapter.

Sierra’s favorite Bible verse is Philippians 2:3-4 – “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

Carly BeckhamClassification: SeniorFaith West Academy

Go to Baylor after graduation. Get a bachelor’s degree in child education, a master’s in business and a doctorate degree in social work or psychology.

It is her plan. It is God’s plan for her. She wants to work in and eventually own a children’s orphanage. “My mom was raised in a children’s home,’ she told of her inspiration for such a lofty goal, ‘and I have always known that I should be in ministry. I love to work with children and this would be a great way to serve God.”

Carly is a member of NHS, FCA, Mu Alpha Theta, and president of the Class of 2012. She has been in every drama pro-duction since she was in the 7th grade. She is a member of the chapel band, vocals & keyboard, and has written six songs. At Homecoming she was awarded the “Most Representative” girl at FWA. This year she founded a teen girls’ after school Bible Study called “Captivated.” Besides studying the Word, the girls will often prepare meals for the homeless.

Carly’s favorite Bible verse is Proverbs 31:30 - “Charm is decep-tive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.” -

Local Christian Student HighlightsMackenzie KahrhoffClassification: 6th GradeBeckendorff Junior High School

Mackenzie was born in Omaha, Nebraska, but moved to Katy in time to start Kindergarten. She has a strong Christian faith, and often prays in the middle of the day for the Lord to give

her strength. She shares her Christian beliefs with her friends and family members through her compassion for others, willing-ness to lend a hand, and loving spirit. Mackenzie excels in both academics and the arts. She has been in the Gifted/Talented program since kindergarten and has maintained an A average through the more rigorous junior high coursework. She won third place in the Kilpatrick Elementary School spelling bee last year and competed in a Regional Math and Science Competition. Mackenzie is a talented artist, and her artwork was featured in the Katy Livestock and Rodeo Show. She loves reading, hang-ing out with friends, and shopping in her free time. She also has a growing babysitting business that helps her earn spending money. She has many aspirations, including becoming a teacher, pediatrician, lawyer, or chemist someday.

Mackenzie’s favorite Bible verse is John 15:12 - “This is my com-mandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”

We will Ride Ministries is a church designed by bikers, for bikers . . . but you don’t need to ride a motorcycle to attend. It’s a welcoming, eclectic gather-ing of believers who care about their faith walk and the com-

munity. Meet senior pastor and founder Rocky Sum-merfield. He leads the nondenominational congrega-tion and takes the Bible seriously with the mantra, “Live to Read, Read to Live.” As a combat decorated Marine, he was called to ministry in 1997 and in 2002 became an alumnus of Washington Bible College/Capital Bible Seminary. He’s also a life time student of Tai Chi and retains his credentials as an NRA Cer-tified Instructor and Glock Factory Armorer.

In short, Reverend Rocky is especially qualified to impact the lives of those who are not ready to enter a traditional church or who feel uncomfortable or unwelcome. “Come as you are,” says Summerfield. “Our church is open to anyone who can identify with jeans, t-shirts and leather. This is a church, not a fashion show or a place to show off the new duds!” Pierced, tattooed up, or just wanting to hear the Word of the Lord in a safe, friendly and fun environment—all are welcomed with open arms at We Will Ride Ministries.

We Will Ride Ministries was formed after Summerfield met a couple members of the Pagans motorcycle club. This group along with the Outlaws, Warlocks, Hells Angels and Bandidos are located predominantly in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New

Mexico and are labeled as outlaw. Yet Summerfield understood them and was able to minister, bond and gel, realizing that this demo-

graphic needed Jesus like anyone else. “I don’t push religion but provide counseling, prayer, hospitalization, etc.,” says Summerfield. “I’ve performed mar-riages for motorcycle riders from others clubs but not yet an outlaw club.” Summer-field has since shep-herded all lifestyles of motorcycle enthu-siasts. “Our “Biker Church” is a place for all to come, whether you ride a bike or not.”

We Will Ride Min-istries is active in the community. Just recently, church members secured a storage unit at U-Haul in Katy to collect donations for victims of the fires. They also take prayer requests on their website. The congregation meets at the Spring Creek HOA Clubhouse lo-cated off 529 at 6722 Spring Creek in Houston and invite seekers to visit. A warm, accepting environment awaits as bikers and non-bikers worship the Lord.

Reverend Summerfield can be reached by phone at 713-480-8227 or by email at [email protected]. The church website is http://bikerchurch.webs.com

As we rapidly approach the beginning of a new year, most of us will take a few moments to reflect on our goals and aspirations for the future. Nearly universal on our checklist is the desire to make sure we’ve done everything in our power to protect our families. We want to

make sure their needs are met in the present, as well as for the long-term. As families wrap presents and visit with friends and relatives this holiday season, estate planning may not be first and foremost on everyone’s mind. However, taking the time now to evaluate your estate plan is a practice in good stewardship and provides a more secure future for your loved ones. It also provides you with valuable peace of mind as you begin 2012.

While you have probably heard that everyone needs a will to direct the disposition of their assets, there are a few documents that are equally, if not more, important. The first of these documents is a “Declaration of Guardian for Minor Children.” As you can discern from its name, this document allows you to designate someone to care for your children should you and your spouse no longer be able,

either due to death or disability. Many clients consider this to be the most important document in their entire estate plan, and we work with them to come to a God-pleasing decision that works for their

family.

There are also several other documents that are important to consider for a complete estate plan. It is vital to note that while a will affects

your assets and family after you pass, some documents also affect you and your quality of life while you are alive, and therefore merit spe-cial attention. The first is a “Statutory Durable Power of Attorney.” A power of attorney enables someone to act for you in the management of your financial matters (such as with a bank account or the sale of a home). One can define the scope of the powers given to their agent and when those powers take affect. As you may have experienced first hand with an aging relative, these documents are very important

as we grow older and are unable to manage all of our own financial affairs.

Related to medical decision-making, there are two important docu-ments that everyone should consider. The first is a “Medical Power of Attorney.” This document allows someone to make medical decisions on your behalf if you are unable to make them yourself. The second document is a known as a “Directive to Physicians” (also sometimes referred to as a Living will), which conveys your end of life medi-cal treatment preferences to your doctors and family. As you can imagine, having these documents in place helps to ease the decision-making process and provides guidance to your loved-ones in what is certain to be a stressful and emotional time.

Finally, a will is an important component to all of our estate plans. First, a will allows you to name fiduciaries, such as an executor to carry out the directions in your will and settle your estate and a trustee to manage any trusts you may create in your will on a more long-term basis. Second, a will allows you to direct how you want your assets distributed upon your passing. Through the creation of a will, you have the opportunity to provide for your family, as well as to make provision for any charitable or religious causes that are near and dear to your heart. Through simple planning, it is possible to avoid unnecessary tax burdens and protect your family from having their inheritance plundered by future creditors. Additionally, with the proper planning in your will, you can provide for individuals in your family that may have special needs without endangering their qualification for government benefits.

Something many people are not aware of is how the disposition of certain types of assets will not be controlled by their wills. There are many different important types of assets that are considered “non-probate assets,” and that pass to your named beneficiaries based on contractual designations instead of under the terms of your will. For example, a life insurance policy you own on your own life will generally not pass according to the terms of your will. Instead, the proceeds from the policy will pass to the beneficiaries you desig-nated with the life insurance company. The same applies to many retirement accounts, as well. Because for many of us these types of “non-probate assets” comprise the bulk of our estates, it is important to assess them frequently and determine whether the beneficiary designations made with the individual companies coordinate with the rest of your estate planning objectives.

These are but a few of the numerous important items you should consider as you contemplate your estate planning goals for the new year. From the need for sophisticated tax planning to business succes-sion planning, everyone has a unique set of issues and concerns when determining the best path for their family. The holiday season is here! During this time of year, many of us place ourselves under a lot of pressure to prepare the best meals, give the greatest gifts, and have the house decorated perfectly. Not to mention, your waistline can re-ally take a hit, and who wants to start the New

Year with an extra five pounds? We’ll venture to say – no one. But if you have a sweet tooth, we’re here to help.

In addition, high levels of stress can suppress your immune system and adrenal glands, which can result in illness, extreme fatigue and feelings of depression during a time of year that is supposed to be filled with joy. While you are making your list and checking it twice, be sure that your health is at the top. Here are some things to keep in mind:

Address your adrenal fatigue

Adrenal fatigue, often referred to as chronic fatigue, is a condition in which the adrenal glands through chronic emotional or physical stress are unable to meet the body’s demands for cortisol production. The adrenal glands are key players to how your body responds to stress. If you are experiencing extreme fatigue after a full night’s rest, anxiety or panic attacks, headaches, low libido or depression you may be suffering

from adrenal fatigue. The best approach to treating this is not by in-creasing the number of pumpkin spice lattes you drink, but by supple-menting with bioidentical cortisol. A great resource for learning more about cortisol is Dr. Broda Barnes’ book, “Safe Uses of Cortisol.” If you don’t address your adrenal fatigue now, it is only going to get worse.

Nutritional supplements to help alleviate stress • Vitamin B Complex: All B-vitamins are needed and work together

throughout the adrenal cascade (1-2 capsules daily with food)

• Magnesium: Essential for enzyme production in the adrenal cascade (400mg-800mg/day)

• Vitamin C: Most important! Vitamin C is used all along the adre-nal cascade and acts as an antioxidant within the adrenal cortex itself (2000mg – 4000mg/day with food).

• GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid): An amino acid produced in the brain. (500-1000mg taken at bedtime).

• Phosphatidyl Serine (PS): Studies show supplemental PS has been shown to improve mood and blunt the release of cortisol in response to physical stress (100mg taken around 6pm reportedly helps pre-vent waking do to a cortisol surge)

Avoid the holiday binge

Yeast overgrowth in the body can cause a host of symptoms including headaches, gas, bloating, fatigue, and skin rashes. Yeast thrives on sugar, therefore sweets, pastas and breads – some our most favorite things to eat during the holidays – will exacerbate the yeast in the colon as well as the uncomfortable symptoms mentioned above. Although we rec-ommend a yeast-free eating plan year round, we know it’s not always ideal during the holidays. To avoid feeling remorseful when January 1

rolls around, try these tips to stay as close to a yeast-free eating plan as possible:

• Bring a healthy dish to your holiday parties like deviled eggs, a vegetable tray, shrimp cocktail or a deli tray.

• Make healthy sides to go along with your holiday meals like bean salad, sautéed spinach, fresh salad, mashed sweet potatoes or roasted eggplant.

• Research healthy treats that contain all-natural sweeteners like Stevia. You can still have that satisfying taste without the added

sugar or high fructose corn syrup.

A few personal favorites include the following: yeast-free almond pound cake, pumpkin cheesecake, high-protein pumpkin muffins. For extra brownie points, try serving with yeast-free hot chocolate.

For more healthful cooking ideas, and to get the complete yeast-free recipes of the desserts listed above, please visit the vitamin blog at: http://www.physicianspreference.com/blog.asp.

When you attend a Cypress Republic Band performance, you don’t have to

worry about questionable lyrics. CRB is value-driven, conservative and was formed through faith and family connections. “We are simply a group of musicians who love performing and playing great music,” says Darrell Wehlmann, back up vocalist and guitar player. “So much of the entertain-ment crowd is way left of center and not shy about letting you know it. Not CRB. We are normal . . . although we realize that is totally subjective. But, we think we’re normal.”

In fact, CRB was initially a “Dad Band,” performing at backyard gath-

erings and for their daughters’ graduations. The five members include Wehlmann, vocalist and guitar player Brock Miller, lead vocalist Paul

Bailey, drummer Steve Thomson and back up vocalist and bass player Erich Schoennagel. They know each other through church, scouts, their kids’ schools, or the gym. In fact, Miller and Schoennagel are brothers-in-law.

The band members attend St. John Lutheran Church and Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church. All live in the Copperfield, Cypress and Hockley area and like to joke about changing the band’s name to “FLAC” – Four Lutherans and A Catholic. “That pretty well sums us up,” quips Wehlmann, who makes no excuses for the band’s Christian approach. “We are not ashamed of our faith or sharing it, so we work in Christian songs during our sets and close every show with “Until the Whole World Hears” by Casting Crowns. We just love the lyrics.” It might seem strange to play Christian music at midnight as people party and drink, but the band does just that. “What better place and time to sing about salvation through Jesus Christ?” asks Wehlmann.

The band plays selections that run the gamut from ZZ Top to Roy Orbison. They also have friends and fans in high places. Senator Dan Patrick performs with them from time-to-time, as does former Gover-nor Mike Huckabee. “Very early on Paul, a Harris County Republican Party Precinct Chairman, volunteered to help Dan Patrick with his race for the Texas Senate,” says Wehlmann. “Through him we met Mike Huckabee. Too bad he isn’t running for President again – other-wise we might be playing at an inauguration. Wouldn’t that be nice?”

The band is definitely attracting media attention and is featured on the October cover of Cy-Fair Lifestyles & Homes Magazine. They are also receiving mentions for their October 1 opening for Earl Thomas Con-ley at the Waller County Fairgrounds. Their charitable work includes a “Battle of the Dad Bands” at Goode Co. BBQ – “Hope, Help, Heal” – on October 9. This event is close to their hearts, organized by Cop-perfield resident Jenny Tyler to support treatment research for children afflicted with neurological diseases. The big-hearted band members also manage to volunteer at church, on their kids’ teams, and in their neighborhoods.

As their fame spreads they find themselves performing all over the greater Houston area as well as some out-of-town gigs. But balancing full-time jobs, family and rehearsals is a juggling act. They at times turn down opportunities when needed on the home front. “Family comes first,” says Wehlmann. “We have priorities and manage to make it all work, although it takes some effort to merge our individual calendars.”

As Wehlmann likes to say, “God, family, country and conservative val-ues. All-in-all, pretty simple.” Visit their website, song list and upcom-ing events at www.crbband.com. From there fans can sign up for the band’s Plugged-In Newsletter.

Tree House Academy is a private Katy preschool and childcare center, committed to teaching our children Christian values, while educating and nurturing. We teach

A Beka curriculum, and have low ratios. We opened in November 2004 and many of our teachers have been here since day one! Several staff has been teaching for 30+ years, and many have obtained their CDA’s. All are thor-oughly screened, and trained.

Our school is currently enrolling children 6 weeks to 12 years old for full time or part time programs. We provide nutritionally balanced breakfasts, lunches, and snacks. We transport school-aged children to and from local schools

south of I-10, and offer Summer Camp. We are located off South Mason Road, and are nestled safely in the beautiful Estates of Chesterfield community. Our center has 3 large playgrounds that are age appropriate. Unique to our center is our indoor playground! It is a great place for the children to play, and escape bad weather. We also boast a gymnasium, where we offer dance class, sports, and soccer classes-all available at your request.

Please contact us today to inquire about our competitive rates, and schedule a tour!
