BRPN is the Dutch Platform and vivid meeting place for both organizations and individuals to share their common interest in business rules and exchange views and practical experiences. In this tradition Kathy Long showed us how to keep things simple with business rules and business processes, using her field experience and her collaboration with Ron Ross, Roger Burtlon and Ellen Gottesdiener. Both Kathy Long and the BRPN were welcomed by Peter Kalmijn, chairman of the Business Rules Community of Atos Origin. Process and Rules: Keeping it Simple Starting with an interactive warm-up involving the audience, Kathy Long smoothly proceeded to provide insight how to identify process components in an effective and quick way, using the Input Guide Output Enabler (IGOE) process model. This model was immediately recognized by the audience and Kathy pointed out that it is essential to recognize the specific role the guides play in this model: they determine why, how and when something happens in the process. Kathy showed us that contrast to operational business rules, guides are based on intentions. They reside inside the mind of policy makers and are subject to change. Guides As examples of process guides, Kathy presented both assumed and explicit policies, interpreted laws and regulations (compliance), but also criteria for completeness and acceptance. Following this perspective guides define the purpose of the process and provide the knowledge how to take the decisions inside the process. Performance targets and performance criteria are a special kind of guides, because they can be used as feedback loops and can help you to discover process measurement criteria and performance indicators. Reducing Clutter Kathy confronted us how easy we all fall into the trap of disclosing too much detail and complexity and therefore losing the customer in the process. The blank face of a customer was recognized with humor by the audience. But how can we keep the balance in a practical way? To solve this issue, Kathy showed us practical ways to incorporate rules into process analysis and to analyze the guides of the process. She also pointed out potential problems, such as multiple decisions based on one rule, bottom-up misalignment of rules to processes, and provides tips to avoid these problems.
