THE LAMPLIGHTER Newsletter of the
SPRING CITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
JULY 2013
Malaria is a life-threatening parasitic disease
transmitted by mosquitoes. It was once thought that
the disease came from fetid marshes, hence the name
mal•aria (bad air).
In 1880, scientists discovered the real cause of
malaria: a one-cell parasite called plasmodium. Later
they discovered that the parasite is transmitted from
person to person through the bite of a female
Anopheles mosquito, which requires blood to nurture
her eggs.
At our Annual Conference, we celebrated reaching
our goal of 1 million dollars to help eradicate
Malaria in Africa. As a matter of fact, we raised 1.13
million dollars, which means we will have to
opportunity to save 113 thousand lives.
Bonnie Bowman (Spring City Care and Rehab, #205) Mary Curtis (Spring City Care and Rehab. #411) Rosena Elliott (Spring City Care and Rehab, #427) Eddie Garrison (Life Care Center of Rhea County, # 224) Virginia Hale (195 Deer Ridge Dr., A6, Dayton, TN 37321) Ruth Huskins (Golden Years, 301 Keith Dr., S.C.) Fred Mullins (Spring City Care and Rehab, #209) June Pitman (c/o Terri P. Depp, 2516 Gray Hendrix Road, Knoxville, TN 37931) Kathleen Reece (Spring City Care and Rehab, # 613) Elsie Robbins (Life Care Center of Rhea County, #209) Hiley Brady Smith (Horizon Healthcare, 811 Keylon St., Manchester, TN 37355)
Our Conference voted to keep Imagine No More
Malaria throughout this year. This means we can raise
more funds to save lives.
It is truly incredible to know that $10.00 will save a
life. That ten dollar bill will buy a net and provide
information on how to use it properly.
You may ask why a net? The female Anopheles
mosquito only comes out at night, so the net that is
properly used prevents the mosquito from biting the
individual.
Our goal as a church is to eradicate malaria completely
by the year 2015. Because of faithful people all around
the world, the United Methodist Church is living
forward with this vision.
Thank you for all you have done and continue to do.
Just as 1st Corinthians 13:8 says: Love never ends.
The world will know we are Christians by our love.
Shalom,
Pastor Dale

MDO SUMMER SESSION Fifteen children began their first day of the MDO summer session at 8:30 a.m., on Tuesday, June 4. Teachers are Sharon
Baker, Christy Latshaw, and MDO Director, Denisea Johnson. The photos below show how much fun the children have playing with various toys. Little Ava Wilson is busily painting a pretty picture, and Norah Gilliam and friends are pretending to cook on the toy kitchen set. The kids are sure to look forward to each day they attend MDO this summer.
Barbara Hardy’s grandson, Hunter McClendon, received a baseball scholarship to play baseball for Tennessee Wesleyan College (TWC) for 2013 - 14. Present for Hunter’s signing, seated left to right: Kippy VanDeusen (Hunter’s mother), Hunter, and Gary VanDeusen, Standing left to right: Pastor Dale, Hunter Scoons, proud grandmother, Barbara Hardy, RCHS Asst. Dear Church family,
Mike and I want to thank our church family for helping us get Mike’s insulin pump. We thank you for your love and caring. Please keep praying for Mike until everything is adjusted and running smoothly. God is good!
Thanks again.

Letty Shock and Michael Shock
Lauren Wilson became the bride of Ryan Lisa on Saturday, June 15, 2013, at 5 p.m., at the First Baptist Church of Knoxville, TN. Pastor Dale officiated, and several church members attended the lovely ceremony and reception, which followed at the Depot. Congratulations Lauren and Ryan!
What a special day Father’s Day was, Sunday, June 16, 2013. The Hand Chime Choir performed “Fairest Lord Jesus,” “Jesus Loves Me,” and “Bound for Glory,” under the direction of Judy Ezell. A special visit from the Puppet Team, Jasmine, and Bobby thrilled everyone, especially the children. Pastor Dale delivered a wonderful sermon entitled, Daddies Do Matter, which was very appropriate for Father’s Day.
John Hanson and helpers presented special tokens to each father present. Our church was blessed to have every pew filled.
2013 MDO GRADUATION Lots of proud parents, grandparents, other family members, and friends attended the MDO graduation on Thursday, May 23, at 1:30 p.m., in the sanctuary. Following the graduation ceremony, refreshments and fellowship were enjoyed in the Fellowship Hall.
At last! The new organ arrived on Monday, June 3, to the delight of everyone, but especially to organist, Bryan Massengale. Three technicians from Allen Organs worked diligently to make sure the organ was set up correctly. Kay Hesselbach and John Hanson were on hand to watch the installation of the new organ, and the removal of the loaner organ.
Thank you to everyone who helped our church donate 30 Health Kits to the Cleveland District for the 2013 Hands on Mission Project for Liberia. A special thank you, too, to John Hanson for purchasing supplies for most of the kits, and the Sunday evening Bible Study group for assembling the kits before their class began on Sunday, May 26. Thank you, too, Reed Chapel UMC, for your Health Kits, which John delivered with all the others to First UMC, Cleveland, on Tuesday, June 4. May God bless all of you who gave so generously!

Welcome to Our Church Family! Pastor Dale stands
with Naomi and
Don Hinely at the
morning worship
service on Sunday,
May 26, 2013, when
the Hinelys became
new members of
our church family on
Profession of Faith.
Welcome, Don and
Naomi! We are
blessed to have you
join with us in our
service for the Lord
Jesus Christ.
Pastor Dale is shown above with the Prayer Shawl Ministry Team as he offers a prayer of blessing on the beautiful prayer shawls displayed at the morning worship service on Sunday, June 9.
The Prayer Shawl Team meets in the library at alternate times on Mondays except during the summer when they meet only on the first Monday of each month at 10 a.m.
Recipients have often remarked how comforting the prayer shawls are and how they felt the love and prayers of the ones who knitted the shawls and hats.
Pastor Dale leads the congregation in a prayer of thankfulness for new members, Don and Naomi Hinely
