Angus Robson was born in Katherine and, despite now residing in Darwin, said his experiences in the region had had an impact on his mu- sical development. “I think it’s probably influenced me a bit,” he said. “One of the songs I’m singing [on Thursday night[ is about growing up in Darwin but I think it’s relevant to the Territory as a whole and my life in Katherine as well.” After leaving Katherine in 1999, Robson returned after high school to work briefly at both Clyde Fenton Pri- mary School and Katherine High School. The 22-year-old singer-songwriter will be performing as part of the Tel- stra Road to Discovery and he said he hoped competition would provide a platform from which to launch his ca- reer behind the microphone. “I guess I’m hoping to try and take my music a little more serious and this is hopefully a step in the right di- rection,” he explained. “Generally, I just sort of jam and play around.” THE RIGHT NOTES: Former Katherine resident Angus Robson will perform at the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets on Thursday as part of the Telstra Road to Discovery competition. EPBC 2010/5747 Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Flying Operations of F-35A (Joint Strike Fighter) aircraft The Australian Government has approved the acquisition of 72 F-35A Lightning II aircraft to replace the current fleet of F/A-18A/B Hornet aircraft to meet Australia’s future air combat needs. The F-35A aircraft will be based at RAAF Base Williamtown (near Newcastle, NSW) and RAAF Base Tindal (near Katherine, NT), and will conduct a variety of training activities and exercises at other locations around Australia. The first F-35A aircraft will arrive in Australia in late 2018, with all 72 aircraft in Australia by 2022. Closure of Public Comment Period The Department of Defence released the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on 21 July 2014 and invited comments from the community. The Draft EIS is available for download from www.f35evolution.com. The public comment period closes at 6pm (AEST) on Friday 19 September 2014. Late submissions will not be accepted. Round two applications for the Multicultural Affairs Sponsorship Program opened this week and Multicultural Affairs Minister Peter Styles said the program aimed to assist communities with innovative projects. “There are many creative con- cepts promoting multicultural di- versity in the Northern Territory and the Territory government proudly celebrates the rich culture our nation knows us for,” he said. Projects will be assessed on how well they meet criteria including as- sisting the community’s knowledge and appreciation of different cul- tures, providing links throughout the NT and fostering opportunities for multicultural communities to maintain, develop and express their cultural and linguistic diversity.
