-Born June 29, 1941 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago-Died November 15, 1998 (age 57) in Conakry, Guinea-Moved to Harlem, New York at age 2

-“Foreigner” in New York led him to be “hip and popular” among his white peers-Only black member in the “Morris Park Dukes” gang-Attended Howard University,majoring in philosophy

Actions He Took to Bring Change

-Joined The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (later became chairman in 1966)-SNCC campaigned to register black voters in the Deep South-Supported non-violence resistance-Founded Lowndes County Freedom Organization in Alabama; it didn’t welcome whites

Actions- “Black Power”“We’ve been saying ‘freedom’ for six years… What we are going to start

saying now is ‘Black Power.’”Black Power: a rallying cry for young, radical activists-Carmichael separated from MLK’s ideas of nonviolence and racial integration-Didn’t think it was fair that whites could be violent, but blacks couldn’t (similar to Malcolm X’s ideas)-Later supported black separatism: Believed blacks could fend for themselves “It is a call for black people in this country to unite, to recognize their heritage, to build a sense of community. It is a call for black people to

define their own goals, to lead their own organizations.”

Actions (cont.)-Joined Black Panthers Party and spoke around the world on black nationalism, black separatism, and pan-Africanism

-Ultimately quit the group and moved to Guinea
